I've seen a few of these lovely historic Colonials and the pictures and content stay true to the structures. Lovely collections and old pieces dot the interiors and the gardens and grounds outside inspire as well. I recommend this book for people who are looking to decorate an antique home, or simply want to know about one. Excellent photographs.

This book helped me to eat right. I was a pre-diabetic weighing 235 lbs. Since following this book's guidelines in August, 2007, my blood glucose now is less than a 100, my weight has dropped to 188 pounds, and my trouser size has gone from a 42 to a 36. I highly recommend this book to anyone with heart trouble, diabetes, to anyone wanting to live a health lifestyle.

I'm ordering copies for several friends and family!
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-19
This book is very easy to read in spite of the rather complex subject matter. I especially am enjoying the way the authors explain just WHY metabolic syndrome is something to be worried about, and how different foods are digested differently. Some of it is shocking, which is really helping motivate me to make dietary changes.

Many concrete behavioral suggestions as well, such as "instead of eating whole wheat bread, eat whole *grain* bread," things I hadn't previously even been aware of.

After awhile I might want to get a bigger, more detailed book, but this book is a great place to start.

I ordered it along with a low-GI cookbook. I look forward to making some of those recipes this weekend.

This book covers every aspect of travel in New Zealand. Especially helpful for the first time traveler are the maps of the north and south islands at the beginning of the book which list the pages where information on the major tourist attractions can be found. Powell tells you what he likes and what he doesn't like and alerts you to the typical tourist traps that all serious travelers wish to avoid.

Excellent book on library leadership!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-05
Hernon, Powell, and Young have made a significant contribution to the literature on library leadership. Unfortunately, too few books and journal articles have been published on this important topic. With the field of librarianship facing a time not far away when several of its current leaders will be retiring, this wonderful book depicts the attributes of future library leaders. The book is organized in nine "attention holding" chapters. It is not just based on perceptions about effective leaders, but this volume reflects both quantitative and qualitative research on library leadership. Practicing academic and public librarians provided pithy comments on what is required to be a library leader. This book is a "must buy" for anyone interested in library leadership.

Nomads of the nomads: The Al Murrah Bedouin of the Empty Quarter (Worlds of man)

Informative

If you're enraptured by the romanticism of Bedouins wandering the desert, this book will sober you up with reality. Life in the desert is difficult, exhausting work, and Cole captures that concept well in this adaptation of his PhD thesis.

I give this book five stars because it accomplishes what it intended: to provide a general overview of life in the al-Murrah tribe. The prose is reasonable and his theses are well articulated, though after discussing general factoids at length, the text can get a little dry at times. Just keep in mind that it was written more than 30 years ago and the nomadism detailed no longer exists.

Editor's Review

I was the editor for this book and the series editor for these Small Group Help Guides. I asked Terry to write this book because I knew that no one in the country has his wealth of knowledge and experience on this topic. Not only that, Terry is an excellent writer; this book is easy and fun to read, and will help you become a better Bible study leader.

Terry shows you how to make the climate right for quality discussions of God's Word, he provides you with all the guidelines you'll need for leading those discussions, and he helps you get everyone involved in lively--and life-changing--Bible discussions.

Whether you want to write your own studies or you are using written study guides, you will grow as a leader by reading this book. If you lead a churchwide small group ministry, do like I did and buy a copy for every leader!

Nuclear Deterrence Theory is a very important work for students of strategy. Unfortunately, the book was published near the end of the Cold War when interest in nuclear strategy was waning. Consequently, it is not remembered as the important work that it is.

During in the Cold War, there was a very large debate amongst students of strategy and national security about how to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons. Numerous books were published on topics like brinkmanship, MAD, limited retaliation, and first strikes. In many ways, Nuclear Deterrence Theory is the culmination of this literature and the answer to many of questions posed within it.

In Nuclear Deterrence Theory, Powell uses game theory to address the topics listed above. His analysis shows that there are widespread misconceptions regarding some of these topics. Moreover, the use of game theory provides insights into new dynamics within nuclear strategy. In general, although this may not be his aim, Powell causes the reader to appreciate how much warfare has changed since 1945 and how new ways of looking at strategy are needed.

Some readers might worry that the use of game theory, and the accompanying mathematical formulas, would be drawback to the book. However, Powell's writing is sufficiently explanatory to enforce his points and make the game theoretical analysis clear.
