Spare, haunting, elegant

The cover says it all: a sumptious array of beautiful young men being devoured by a creature half-human (the human immuno-virus in the guise of the minotaur). This is the most breathtakingly original poetry, full of humor and heartache, loss and anger and joy. How the author manages to fuse all of this into these small, sonnet-like poems is beyond me. Imagine Kafka, O'Hara, Rimbaud, Rilke, Stein, Spiegelman and Lenny Bruce inhabiting the same bed. It's an orgy of voices, a choir of the most sardonic and most holy kind.

Note that this is the Editio Maior of these works. You will not find an English translation. It is a full edition with a good apparatus criticus, as far as I am able to judge of these things.

A job very well done

Ms. Thomas has done a careful, interesting job of organizing a lot of information in a most readable fashion. I particularly liked her tables about the population growth at the end of the sections and the time line presented inside the front cover. It was interesting to read about some of the names of streets known to us such as McGilvra Boulevard as we had not known anything about the McGilvra family previously.

I also appreciated the last chapter on the various residences that are still about and plan to bring our copy to the neighborhood so that I might be able to spot more of them. Her comments on the various businesses in Madison Park were also very interesting to read.

a terrific book

This is a wonderfully valuable book. Bracingly clear and comprehensive, it is one that any person with Asperger's Syndrome could turn to with confidence and pleasure. More than that, though, it's a book that anyone with any questions at all about sex would find useful. I know that when I was an adolescent with hard-to-ask questions in the 1960s, it would have been a godsend. But as a father of a young man on the autism spectrum, I find the book has a special value to me: it models a way of talking to young people about life that everybody--parents, teachers, doctors, therapists--should emulate. With uncanny intelligence and sensitivity, Sarah Attwood writes in a tone that is respectful, good-humored, reassuring, and utterly frank. This distinctly friendly way of conveying information deserves cloning on a global scale.

A winner!

After reading several "wimpy" westerns, The Malpais Rider was a welcome real western read. Grub-line rider Cam Stallings goes south from Colorado looking for work, his horse is shot and falls on him, and someone takes his Winchester and sixgun and leaves him for dead. Fortunately for him, Stretch B owner Stacy and two Navajos who work for her find him and take him home with them. Turns out Stacy's sister Mala and her Cross Arrow rancher husband are trying to run Stacy off her own ranch. It's both Mala's hatred of her little sister and Mala's husband's desire for the ranch that caused them to run off the Stretch B crew, beat the foreman senseless, and try to kill Stallings when he begins to help Stacy. This relatively short novel packs a thrilling plot, plenty of fist fights and gunplay, and near the end flight to the malpais. Any reader of Louis L'Amour knows what the malpais means - difficulty and death to the unwary and the careless but refuge for those who respect its dangers. The sisters confront each other and both fire their rifles at the same time. Both fall. I won't say who survives but in a good western, good always triumphs over evil. Malpais Rider is one of the best westerns I've read in years of reading westerns. It's really worth your while to locate a copy for yourself.

This was a shower gift specifically for my husband to read to our daughter. She is now a year old and will grab it and hand it to us to read over and over. She loves the furry cover and to grab the tail on the spine. A great book for any father!

Monsters "R" Us
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-10-25
Let's face it: Marvel's Monsters are a cute bunch. They're more entertaining than terrifying. It's like seeing a bunch of mutated soft toys gone wrong. MARVEL MONSTERS is Marvel's affectionate tribute to the characters that helped keep the comic book company alive once upon a time in the 50s and 60s. I had to get this when I picked it up from the shelves - why? Because I realised that the book was filled with both old AND new takes on the Monsters - the Fin Fang Foom; The Original Hulk; the Devil Dinosaur, etc. Most people might think this was just a compilation of old Monster comics. Well, it's a lot more. Stories like Devil Dinosaur's "The Battle That Time Forgot" show that Marvel's team, above all, knows how to have fun with its monsters. Kitschy? Absolutely. This is a must have for anyone who wants to read bedtime monster tales to their loved ones, without scaring them. (PS includes some classic art from Jack Kirby)
