service throughout the day, throughout the month, throughout the year....100 stories of giving...the notes at the end of each story to jump into service in your community are a link to giving. .My favorite story was Christmas in April---I must admit I cheered for Frances as she conquered the steps--I read later that she and the writer are enthusiastic pen pals...what inspiration. Thank you to the 100 stone soup writers. You gave me a taste of who inspires you.

Stone Soup for the World is a set of 100 stories about compassion and volunteerism. From the intro by Colin Powell to the story of Ms.Larned's young brother, the whole book was a joy to read. I especially loved the Nelson Mandela and Paul Newman stories. This book has stirred me to be a better person and to help others. I recently walked in honor of my aunt who passed away from cancer and raised money doing it. It felt good just as these stories felt good. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to people from 9 to 99.

Wonderful motivations of the "goodness" in the human spirit.

On occasion one of those books comes along that I can't put down. This collection of short (3 - 5 pages each) true stories are of people about whom, after I have read the story, I consistently say, "Why didn't I know that before reading this?" This book is truly an insight into past and current history through the prism of what stirs the heart and spirit.

Jane Powell is THE bungalow author to read. As a remodeler who specializes in 1920's bungalows, it pleases me to no end to read an author who really knows what she is talking about. Every Jane Powell book I have read is like a college course on that aspect of bungalow history, preservation, and renovation. This book is no exception. And she is really funny! Beautiful photos (as usual)by Linda Svendsen.

I enjoy this book and look at pretty regularly. I plan on using some of the details on future construction projects. However, the author is a bit too politically correct for my tastes. She keeps reminding us how "poison" vinyl is. That sort of bothered me. I am sure, given a choice, most people would choose to live a beautiful wooden or stone home rather than a vinyl clad manufactured home or tract home.. however lets be realistic. Those types of home are often what is affordable to the average family. Other than that issue.. I would recommend the book.. it has some great pictures and lots of information about bungalow exterior details.

Excellent reference guide to Craftsman bungalows.

I don't live in a Craftsman bungalow, but I'm adding a number of Craftsman details to my existing NW cabin style house. Over the years I have collected numerous books full of photographs of various bungalows but I have sold all of them now that I have this book. This one book contains information on nearly every exterior detail you are likely to need, and is lavishly illustrated with photographs and drawings. It's an excellent reference for buffs and restorers. I have already pre-ordered the next volume which will cover interiors. Shame I have to wait 6 months!

Together writer Jane Powell and photographer Linda Svendsen create the best bungalow books on the market -- full of information, not just fluff. Whether you are thinking of remodelling your house, changing a few details, or just want to understand the history of your bungalow, this is the book to buy... and really, this book is very cheap compared to the price of a bad remodel.

In my opinion the chapter on avoiding replacement window scams, while energy-retrofitting your house, should be required reading for all homebuyers.

What recommended this book to me was that the authors were pioneers in the concept of the glycemic index. I knew intuitively that this concept mattered, but till recently all I knew was too many carbs were bad. But this is one of the books that corrects that notion to say that what matters is how directly a carbohydrate enters the bloodstream. Too directly means a load on the pancreas, perhaps an overreaction, perhaps hypoglycemia, and over time insulin resistance. The book not only explains that lucidly but then it moves on to explain how a person can revise his diet so that there is a healthy percentage of carbs without these adverse results. I can't say if the book is superior to others, but I can say that it contains useful information expressed in understandable terms.

Excellent book on how to eat
Helpful Votes: 42 out of 42 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-11
This book is an excellent one for understanding how and what to eat. For those of us who may have grown up in families where it was always meat and potatoes until full, with an occasional soggy veg thrown in, this book is great at helping you learn what it means to eat in a healthy way that allows you to be full and lose weight if you need to. It even addresses exercise in ways that most people can do easily at home.

This is the first book on eating (or dieting) that I've really understood because it makes sense. No alarm bells went off in my head about eating this way, no doubt that I could sustain this way of eating for life, and no worrying about how much this was going to cost in specially purchased foods or gym memberships.

The reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is that the recipes are pretty far out there and contain a lot of ingredients not readily available in the average kitchen. Plus, the cooking involved is probably something that would reduce the chance of anyone trying too many of these recipes.

It's entirely possible though to use types of foods that are low GI and imaginatively combine them in ways you're familiar with cooking and eating.

I would strongly recommend this book despite the difficult recipes at the end. The remainder of the book is excellent and will be one which makes sense to anyone who reads it. May we all achieve / maintain our desired weight and be healthier in the process!

His words elucidates you in the Absolute experience and does not hesitate on reviewing anything else other than attaining this state. I simply loved reading this book. I have read it for the second time and yet it seizes to amaze me ever more. His profound subliminal messages carry important meanings which are not hard to comprehend at all. As usual Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj's words are powerful and profound. This book is a great compliment to I AM THAT.
What we have here is Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj giving very direct discources on apperceiving yourself as the Unborn. In this series of Q & A's Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj continually dismantles the concepts of the seekers and brings us back over and over to pointing us to our True Nature.
The talks are very focused and direct. Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj's methodical approach is designed to help you question and discard all the false ideas you have carried around about your mistaken identity and instead seeing your Self beyond body/mind identification. The talks are made to make you question, inquire and go a step beyond even spritual practices. This is a great book for those that are interested in cracking the shell of the false and peering into the Infinite and going past being a "seeker" learning yet more spiritual practices etc., etc., etc. These teachings are very direct pointers into Self-Knowledge of the Absolute reality and understanding what you really are and what was the state you were in prior to consciousness.
These are amongst some of the most concise and direct teachings I've come across in print.
"There is no birth, there is no death, there is no person, it is all just a concept, an illusion!"

Review Date: 2003-08-18
This book was a very satisfying and rewarding experience for me. I would put this on my "must read" list if you have not done so.

This book is an incredible journey about the Episcopal Church and the history of our country through the eyes of a truly great disciple, Bishop Noble Powell.

Hein portrays the life of this Bishop in a wonderfully depicted, and accurate manner. He also reveals the discipleship of Powell and the incredible journeys it takes him on. This book is about "love in action". Bishop Powell takes on the "Great Commission" with great pride and passion his entire life. I loved this book and hope you are fortunate to glimpse into the life of Noble Powell, by David Hein.

An inspiring biography for any Christian

Review Date: 2003-05-06
I loved this book!! To me, someone not raised in the Episcopal church, this book told me so much not only about the twentieth-century history of this important mainline denomination but also about its ethos -- its distinctive approach to spirituality, which combines the mind and the conscience, not just the feelings. Episcopalianism focuses not simply on an emotional conversion experience but, as we see in Powell's life, a rhythm of prayer and praise, repentance and amendment of life, through the liturgical year and the sacraments. This biography is informative on such matters, and yet, what made it a delight to read was feeling the personality of Noble Powell as a constant, comforting presence on every page. The story is beautifully written and told by David Hein, and his choice of material for this book reflects an exquisite sensitivity to the important dimensions of a life lived "in Christ." I felt such admiration when I considered the extraordinary research effort that went into understanding Powell's life and the result produced in this wonderful biography. I hope the author will write more on the history of the Episcopal church.

A first-rate biography

Review Date: 2001-08-19
This is an absolutely top-notch biography of an important (if heretofore little known) American Protestant leader. As Hein convincingly argues, Noble Powell was a representative figure who embodied the essential values of the religious "establishment" in the United States in the mid-twentieth century. I strongly recommend this book both to scholars and to ordinary readers interested in the evolving relationship between mainline Protestantism and American culture from 1920 to 1960.

The Last of the Old-style Bishops

Review Date: 2001-07-25
Who needs to read about an Episcopal bishop who has been dead for 33
years? David Hein of Hood College in Frederick, Maryland persuades
us that anyone interested in the state of Christianity in America
today should know about Noble Cilley Powell, for two reasons: he was a
winsome, self-confident, compassionate leader who presided over a
church which attracted the faith of a generation emerging from the
Depression and World War II; and second, he represented a
turning-point in the role of mainline Protestantism. What Hein calls
"the Episcopal Establishment" had, at its best, a political
and social influence far beyond its numbers. Since his retirement on
Nov. 22, 1963-- the very day Kennedy was shot--the world changed and
so did the churches. In some ways this was a loss, in many ways a
gain, but it must be understood as a major shift. This
well-documented and clearly written biography shows that Noble Powell
represents the best of the old "establishment" and is a
gauge by which to measure what has changed.

More than meets the eye...

This seemingly unassuming book is full of treasures to be discovered. David Hein's biography of Noble Cilley Powell, Episcopal Bishop of the diocese of Maryland from 1943 to 1963, presents so much more than an exact account of the life and works of a well-known and beloved Episcopal bishop. Hein's insightful and clear writing style is very effective at depicting the circumstances of the times in which Bishop Powell lived and how these shaped his character and his actions. The author also has been able to illustrate, through the testimonies of those who knew Bishop Powell at different stages of his life, how his noble and nurturing character influenced others inside and outside the church. But, for me the highest value of this biography is how Hein masterfully brought forth the connecting thread of Bishop Powell's life: a life signaled by love and friendship through Christ's love, or what Powell referred to as "love in action".

This is my favorite Christmas story featuring a dog.The spirit of the season is love and understanding, and that is shown so eloquently as Cora is not left out of the annual pulling of the Christmas tree sleigh in spite of her aging body. She is allowed to have her traditional role, but without the weight of the sleigh on her harness, sparing her from overexertion,or worse---from failure. It is a beautiful lesson in compassion and in the importance of feeling useful and needed, especially as we age. And if you have ever loved an aging dog, this story will bring a tear to your eye. This book is worth seeking out despite its out of print status.

Consie Powell should be commended for this fabulous work. The pages filled with her woodcut illustrations could be framable art, and they truly enhance the compelling story. Cora, the oldest of three Newfoundlands, wants to help with pulling the annual Christmas tree home on a sled, but her people won't let her! They don't understand her attempts to help. This would be a great book to discuss the importance of inclusion and how sometimes people (and dogs) can misunderstand each other. The Newf enthusiast will appreciate the artistic depictions of this noble breed.

This little notebook is an excellent journal for anyone who wants to take notes, keep track of or record the experience of the books they read.

The softcover and spiral-bound notebook offers a place to write down the title of each book, the author, the subject, comments about the book and discussion notes; as well as a place to rate the book read according to a system detailed in the first few pages. There's even a spot for a favorite quote from each book!

I would highly recommend this book diary for book club members as a tool to keep track of a book's plot, important highlights and character analysis to enhance their book club discussions. But, I think it would be just as beneficial to anyone who reads a lot of books and wants to remember certain details about those books.

Another bonus of this adorable book are the reference sections; including, but not limited to, subjects such as Best Coffee Table Book, The Most Useful Book I've Read, I'll Read Anything Written By, etc. These reference sections offer suggestions from other readers and also leave a place to add your own recommendation.

Thinking that writing notes on a piece of paper as I was reading was sufficient, I was hesitant to buy this book, but I'm so glad I did. I was not disappointed!

Step by loving step, the lessons provided have gently guided me to a remembrance of how to create from pure love; allowing God to live and love through me beyond the limitations of ego. These profound communications, so passionately, consistently, and selflessly provided through the Circle of Light, have kept my heart on course as it has opened into unimaginable vistas of beauty and ecstasy. In Say 'Yes' to Love - "God Explains SoulMates" God explains our connection to 'All That Is' as co-creators of divine feminine and divine masculine and reveals that the Millennium is the time for the reconnection of Soulmates. The beautiful and loving messages through Yael and Doug Powell reveal that true soulmate love is our destiny and encourages us to commit to living as soulmates in our hearts and choosing to reach beyond ego which creates separation. The book unveils why humanity has such a deep longing for love and the messages lovingly encourages us to reach for our highest vibrational level to awaken not only ourselves but humanity and the earth.

In "God Unveils SoulMate Love and Sacred Sexuality" God speaks candidly of the need for soulmates to understand 'sacred sexuality' as a divine gift, the greatest gift from which all that exists is created and lovingly encourages us to learn to give ourselves completely to our soulmates as true co-creators. We are the law of Love manifested and the one law of Love is in Giving. Together in sacred union we fully become the cosmic forces of the Divine Feminine and the Divine Masculine, the lock and key that together opens the way to humanity's transformation.

The Say 'Yes' to Love SoulMate Series through Yael and Dough Powell are filled with beautiful messages of God's unconditional love and concern for humanity and the earth. These books are a wonderful read, especially for those who have connected to their soulmate or for anyone interested in the soulmate phenenoma.

Say "Yes" to Love, God Explains SoulMates
Through Yäel and Doug Powell

What distinguishes the books in the Say "Yes" to Love series (see my reviews) is the
purity of the voice of God that shines forth from every page. Say "Yes" to Love, God
Explains SoulMates, is the first of this series on different topics. The books are the result
of Yaël Powell's unusual thirty-year communion with God in which she agreed to be "the
pen in God's hand" during daily meditation. The Messages are of Love and from Love,
and can lead to a spiritual experience of profound beauty.

Say "Yes" to Love, God Explains SoulMates lights the path to new understandings
about what SoulMates are and how to open to yours. We are told that "you have only one
SoulMate, the other half of your grand and glorious eternal being and the other half of the
cell of My [God's] heart which you make up together." Further, your SoulMate is not just
a life partner or someone who will help you grow but you are "two energies that have
been manifested through every level," what God calls a "Love beyond eternal."

The path to the SoulMate is opening the heart (saying "Yes"), according to these uplifting
messages, and focusing one's life toward giving, rather than getting. "It is imperative that
you open your heart, your mind and your spirit to the proof of Love in your life." "When
you truly open your heart, you will see your SoulMate there, right in front of you." "You
will come to find that giving Love is the key to the awakening of humanity."

Say "Yes" to Love, God Explains SoulMates, in this reviewer's opinion, is a glorious
collection of God's Wisdom. See my reviews on other books in this outstanding series,
entitled Say "Yes" to Love, God Unveils SoulMate Love and Sacred Sexuality and
Say "Yes" to Love, God's Guidance to LightWorkers.

I found these books (Say 'Yes' To Love: God Explains SoulMates and Say 'Yes' To Love: God Unveils SoulMate Love and Sacred Sexuality) on Circle of Light's website, www.circleoflight.net. I know that this was no accident. Without having had any conscious awareness of the Twin Soul concept, I had already instinctively known and directly experienced its truth.

Everything presented in these books resonates so deeply in me. I am amazed that I found so much in the content that had already been revealed to me in visions and dreams. It sometimes takes my breath away! It has given so much validity to everything I had already come to believe. Every time I pick up one of the books and open it to a random page, it seems that the passage my eyes fall on is exactly what I needed to read at that moment. The messages have helped me to stay connected and in touch with my 'true self' and full of hope and expectation.

Thank you, Yaël and Doug, for feeling the need to share these messages. They have meant so much to me in my journey. It's kind of like piloting a boat by the stars and one day discovering a secret compartment full of maps that show where all the ports of call are located! It makes it so much easier to get where you want to go.

I highly recommend these books to anyone on a spiritual path of any kind. The Love that flows from these words opens your heart and opens your life. God's light can be felt through every page.

Understanding Soul Mates is Knowing Ourselves

This unprecedented time in the history of Earth is not at all a "New Age"; it is the rediscovery of universal truth, the conscious reconnecting of each soul with every other soul. Within this God-level inseparability, not all souls are created for equal experiencing, however. There are those specifically joined in antiquity whose love-bonding exceeds all others -- they are soul mates.

Yael Powell's powerful reconnection with her soul mate, Doug, is the fabric of her deeply moving story of overcoming emotional devastation and physical pain and debility. And in their rediscovery of each other incarnately, they experience their independent soul missions even as they are consciously inextricably joined with all of life in this universe.

The enabling of this union/reunion is love, the most powerful energy in the cosmos. We can no longer live in the cocoons of deception where we've been for millenia; we must make conscious choices, toward the light or away from it, and choosing to move toward the light is embracing and being embraced by the love within it.

Say Yes to Love isn't in conflict with spiritual faith, but it goes way beyond the confines of religions and their dogmas. Through messages Yael receives from God, this book covers her and Doug's love that transcends mundane sensations and reaches highest soul fulfillment to the benefit of all of Earth. It describes the journey where the rest of us can search for, attract and recognize our soul mates. This journey itself is a wondrous reawakening to what has been ever since the Beginning; it's a return to our former awareness of our essence as part of God, our birthright of love, and the purpose of life.

Thank you, Yael and Doug, for sharing your intimate and universal love story.

Lawrence Powell set out to write a book about the David Duke phenomenon, about how a KKK leader and Nazi could sit in the Louisiana legislature and run for the U.S. Senate as a Republican. But work on the book took him in another direction after he interviewed Anne Levy, a Holocaust survivor who confronted Duke in the state capital. Captivated by Levy's story, Powell has produced a terrifying, poignant and finally a triumphant book about the Holoaust as witnessed through the life of one of its survisors, Anne Levy.

Troubled Memory is a beautifully written and tender account of a personal story that stands as an intimate history of Hitler's final solution. Powell's prose will carry you into the Warsaw and Lodz ghettos and into the vegetable bin where 6-year-old Anne and her sister hid from the SS. This is a book that makes the Holocaust relevant to every reader. It will fill you with horror and wonder, and it will move you to tears.

The Klansman and the little old Holocaust survivor

Troubled Memory is the story of the Skorecki family, which survived the Hoocaust by escaping from the Warsaw Ghetto and going into hiding, intertwined with an accessible history of the Warsaw Ghetto. But is is also the story of Anne Skorecki Levy, 45 years later and transplanted to Louisiana, deciding that she doesn't want Klansman and Holocaust denier David Duke to become the governor of her state. On all three counts - as a tale of survival during the Holocaust, a history of that time and place and the story of little Anne Levy's dogged pursuit of the bigshot politician during his election campaign - the book reads like a taut thriller, a real page-turner from beginning to end.
In its linking of the Holocaust in Poland with the troubled racial history of the American South, Troubled Memory is reminiscent of Styron's Sophie's Choice - except that this is fact, not fiction. It's a compelling, genre-busting book that is not quite like anything you've read, and it leaves you both feeling good and with much to think about.

A Synthesis of the Holocaust

I am a student at Tulane University and have taken a seminar with Dr. Powell on the Holocaust. This book is the last book that he included on the syllabus for the course, and I understand fully how and why he wrote this book. At first I was a bit leery of his inclusion of his own work in the course, but the work is a great synthesis of traditional Holocaust study and how it pertains to American (particularly Southern) culture today.

The first half of the book largely provides a survey through a personal account of the sociopolitical landscape of World War II-era Eastern Europe: the reasons that the Holocaust occurred, bystanders, perpetrators and victims psychological profiles, as well as giving a very readable human interest story of the narrative of this one particular family. The second half picks up where most Holocaust narratives leave off: the post-war years, the family's emigration to America and the challenges that they faced in New Orleans as Holocaust Survivors, and finally, Anne Levy's battle against David Duke and the formation of the Louisiana Coalition against Nazism and Racism. The first half of the book is essential for understanding her drive in the second half of the book, and Dr. Powell does an excellent job in connecting traditional and new scholarship on just how frighteningly close Louisiana came to David Duke's authority and how important it is to be aware of the ideals that the Louisiana Coalition and Anne Levy espouse.

This book is written in a highly readable manner: the diction is not overly dense nor confusing and the personal story allows non-scholars to enjoy the material as much as a student of history or politics would. It is very obvious that Dr. Powell put an immense amount of personal effort and dedication into this account, and his contribution to the historical documentation of the Holocaust and its impact on contemporary society is a testimony to his skill as a historian.

This story chronicles the survival of small Jewish girls who were hidden in an armoire by their desperate parents in the closing days of the Warsaw ghetto. It easily matches the personal resonance and innocent terror of the far more famous Anne Frank Story.

Even after their final liberation as perhaps the only intact nuclear family to survive that infamous ghetto, the Skorecki family was due one more date with history. Survival, it turns out, was the story within the story. Little Anne Skorecki Levi, the little girl who survived by staying silent inside that armoire struck a blow five decades later for Jewish survival by speaking out against Louisiana's Neo-Nazi gubernatorial candidate David Duke, and helping to engineer his electoral defeat.

This account of Anne's travel along the arc from victim to victor is an inspiration and a reminder that each of us can and must preserve our collective memory, however troubling.

I read books on the Holocaust to try to understand the times, the mileu, the horror, and the suffering. After more than 20 books, I realize that I can only scratch the surface. I will, however, never stop reading because of my fear that someday the deniers and the downgraders might get the upper hand.

Thank you to the the author and Anne Skorecki Levy for relating a story that is very, very moving as well as insightful and timely.
