This is a very well-written and semi-ficitionalized memoir of the author's years growing up and working in a 'mom-n'-pop' jewelry store. The characters make it interesting, funny and at times, poignant. The author takes us from his first job search (and his mixed feelings about working) to how he grew into the patterns of life at the store, until he eventually became the store's owner.At the same time, it becomes the story of life in a mid-sized city in America, where personal service and even friendship used to be the standard of the times, until giant discount stores took over the landscape. That short description cannot begin to portray the pleasure you will get from reading this book. C. L. Rossman

This book was terrific. But everything about John is terrific! The pictures were good and the information was too, even though I knew it all already. John is the greatest guy ever and I want to marry him. The end.

A wonderful book, one of the best book about transport architecture, and architecture in general, that I have ever seen. It is an accurate description of the stations of the Jubilee line extension. The pictures are wonderful, the text is fascinating. If you love modern architecture, you will love this book.

Biographies, especially judicial biographies, are typically centered around gossip, amateur psychology, political "message," or numbing minutiae. Dean Jeffries avoids those vices by using the late Justice Lewis Powell as the backdrop for an expert analysis of the gripping issues of Powell's tenure on the Court: the death penalty, privacy rights, poverty law, criminal jurisprudence, race and affirmative action, the First Amendment, etc. He tackles each of them with artful prose and persuasive logic.

By depicting these developments as a panorama rather than a series of close ups, Dean Jeffries offers the educated reader invaluable insights into issues that still dominate our own times. Through the prism of events, we easily come to appreciate the extraordinary skills, energy, and intellect of Justice Powell himself. (We are also drawn to reflect on how hateful the present system of "confirmation by ordeal" truly is.)

This book is perfect as a gift for lawyers and anyone truly interested in understanding the law as the environment in which social policy dwells.

We finally get real details, specific stories, of the narrator.

I wonder if the first books would have been more enjoyable if we had more of a sense of his past, rather than just an observer who happened to know everyone by direct or indirect connection.

The book was in tact but I found out later that some pages in the index were missing. Good book overall.

Amazon com. found this book quickly, it'd been out of stock although. When the book was delivered to me, it was second hand with a signature@"Mrs.xxxx in Bali in 1933." As a person making a private research on the art movement in Bali in 1920th, this book is truely great and gives me a lot of rare info about that time. It's not difficult for anyone having been to Bali, to understand the story.

Every drink described is pictured, the drinks and directions are great. It features mostly newer drinks. Makes you want to have a cocktail party just from reading it. I love it!

A marvellous book of the film that Winston Churchill tried (unsucessfully) to ban - because it showed good Germans during WWII. The book contains original & final versions of the scripts, reasons why Powell & Pressburger wanted to make the film and extracts from Government memos to & from Winston Churchill.
