An intelligent and engaging textbook

Textbooks have, deservedly, a bad reputation. Morris and Powell have written a textbook that is also a pleasure to read. This truly fine book covers the full range of material, but with style and flair. It is also well illustrated and makes very effective use of original source material. And their use of what they call "the Greek problem" -- how to organize social life "withough God or gods to reveal" a pattern -- is extremely effective. There are a number of good overview introductory books out there on the Greeks, but none better. The only drawback is a fairly hefty pricetag.

For the ones who are not familiar with criminal law terms or have doubts about their meaning, this dictionary is extremely useful. You can find accurate explanations which also help you make a distinction between terms that may seem synonymous.

He Touched Me: My Pilgrimage of Prayer

This book chronicles the well-known author's personal pilgrimage of prayer. It details his own deeply personal growth in prayer in the most intimate conversational style. His struggles with faith are shared honestly. Stories and illustrations abound. This book is highly recommended for those who are grappling with faith and prayer and God. Powell ends his little power-packed book with two examples that leave the reader with real hope that anyone can find God through Jesus Christ. I read this book over 20 years ago. It's influence remains a part of my own personal prayer life to this day. Very few books have this lasting of an impact.

My company sent me this book as part of their Wellness Initiative and it's great! I used to use the AMA home health guide, but that was confusing and huge. This one is a great size and very user friendly.

Highly Readable if Dated
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-01-11
This book is dated, it was written in the mid 80s and some things have changed. However, Andrew Powell's writing is so good that one finds it as captivating as a novel. Though at times he seemed to skim the surface a bit more than I'd like, the book was consistent in it's approach from start to finish, and the turns of phrase and colorful adjectives employed by Mr. Powell often made me laugh with rememberances of my own visits to the locations he reported from, and my own experiences with Tibetan people. Overall I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to truly understand the situation in Tibet. Even though the information is somewhat dated, it perfectly captures the thoughts and opinions at the time it was written and provides a very sound overview including history of the Tibetan struggle and dispersion of Tibetans in India.

This book is truly led by the Holy Ghost. It's a must have if you want to learn more about the Holy Spirit and the way He works, or if you just want to have a greater relationship with Him. I especially found it reviving when I felt His fire deminishing within me. It will continually make you passionate to explore your relationship with the Holy Spirit, and keep you reading from page to page. Anyone who reads this book will not want to put it down. From beginning to end this book will truly make you want, need, and have to say HOLY SPIRIT, I HUNGER FOR YOU!

Excellent book... Well written, great sense of humor... Made one feel as if they were living during the time frame of the book. Hollis is such a "normal" person with an every day type of spirit quality. You feel as if you are Hollis' spirit.

Far from Ordinary- A Review for "How Far Is Ordinary?"
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-09
Nancy Powell's "How Far is Ordinary" is far from ordinary. A visual depiction of emotion covering a range including the sadness of mourning and the wistfulness of good intentions as in The Belated Christmas Gift. She brushes against the ravages of cancer as well as captures the sweaty undertones of sexual allure in French Quarter Morning.
Her poem "Time" celebrates the ebb and flow of life. Mesmerizing are such expressions as :"Hot kiss of a steam iron," "field of flags," "bullet shaped buildings," and "velvet sluice of liquid."
Her images of war are sobering and the reader finds enlightenment through a Holocaust survivor's revelation that it was water he missed most.
"How Far is Ordinary" is a virtual dance of words, often a slow dance- captivating and colorful. A wonderful read that causes the reader to slow down and reflect on what is truly meaningful in life. 63 pages. Mindworm Press

Practical and Helpful

This book by Eddie Powell is more practical and helpful than any other I've found. I am a professional life coach who often works with folks in career transition, and this is the book I recommend. It helps orient the reader toward gaining strength of their abilities, finding words that work in both written form and for interviews, and how to finally understand the process of job search is not just mailing the resume.

Readers enjoy a quick resourceful read, while also being able to refer back to this book time and time again. It is also excellent for all ages from high school to retired folks. Thanks Eddie for your good work.
