My son loves this book. It only has five pages but each has a hole they can put their little finger in to slide the piece that makes the bird flap, or the horse run, or the cow chew...etc.Whenever he brings it to me I know I'll have to read it at least 5 times in a row.

An Unknown Philosophical Gem
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-28
Fr. Ralph Powell, O.P., a philosopher and Dominican Friar from Chicago, has written a book filled with quotes from philosophers, historical sketches and brief outlines concerning the problem of epistemological relativism. "Freely Chosen Reality" delivers, point by point, pieces of evidence proving that most philosophers have agreed on one permanent claim. Powell writes, "There is trans-cultural agreement on an experiential basis for philosophy." That upon which the philosophers agree is this: a real-relation is the first object of experience and the extrinsic formal cause of sensation. This agreement is capable of building a person's hope and trust in the conclusions of ethics and logic.

Candid and heart warming

A very candid and heart warming set of writings by married couples, in the forms of personal letters to each other. It's an exercise that probably would benefit most couples, no matter how solid and good their relationship is. I don't personally know a lot about love in the form of marriage, never having been married, but I felt I learned a lot about it reading the book. I think, though, that even if one were married, one could still learn a lot from it. Relationships are as infinite in diversity and variety as humanity, as are the forms of love. But in the end, you find out from reading this book, love is love.

The True Story of a slave girl's struggle for human dignity
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-04-04
This powerful narrative, written by a direct descendant of the princess Yani, draws on stories of incidents taken from the author's family history that were passed from generation to generation until set down here.

For a time, Yani is happy as a slave on Denfield's South Carolina plantation. She becomes the favorite of black and white alike. Denfield's sons instruct her in grammar and deportment. At a festive plantation "slave wedding," she is mated with the giant slave Koba amid much feasting and merriment.

Deep sorrow comes when Yani's slave husband and their daughter, Yola, are sold to other masters. Years pass, and Yani learns nothing of her child's fate. She does not even know that she has a grandchild. Yet why is she so strangely attracted to the slave girl Lucinda, whom she meets in Charleston?

Yani seeks consolation in the music she plays on her African harp, and in her prophetic visions, which reveal that her people will be freed from bondage and find the peace she so deeply desires. Her story, "From the Slave Cabin of Yani," is a moving account of slavery and a woman's hopes for her children and her people.

To those with an interest in the Colorado Plateau(more specifically the Grand Canyon & the Lake Powell area) the name Gary Ladd will be familiar. He one of the finest Large Format landscape photographers in the southwest. What is a little unusual is that he has devoted almost his entire career(30 yrs) to a very specific area: The Grand Canyon & Lake Powell. The tack sharp images are beautiful & are printed on excellent stock. These are not the usual overlooks that many are familiar with.Ladd has done strenuous hikes and spent over 50 days in the Canyon photographing the Colorado & the beautiful side canyons. He has given us photographs of places that very few of us will ever see. There are also excellent essays that Ladd has written. Each photo is captioned with as many as three comments relating to the land, his experience while taking the image, and information about the image.I loved this book and recommend it to anyone who loves the canyons of the southwest and those who would like to see the canyons through the eyes of a master.

Behind the Scenes at Desert Storm!

Review Date: 2004-01-13
This is great drama and living history!

It's a fascinating read on both these guys, beginning separately with chapters on each of them as a lieutenant in Vietnam. After that, it traces their promotions and military careers.

Includes each man's perspective on other issues. The chapter on Gen. Schwarzkopf's "Desert Storm Strategy" is particularly worthwhile.

You can't know recent military history without studying Desert Storm, and you can't know Desert Storm without knowing the men who made it happen! Highly recommended.

A tender look at death and friendship

I work with grief and divorce workshops with children. I go through tons of literature trying to find something pertinent and helpful. This book is incredible. I still can't read it without tearing up a bit and Ive read it to the kids a hundred times. Helps them know they are not alone and that death is not their fault. I highly recommend this book almost as much as Max Lucado's You Are Special.

In-Depth and Entertaining!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1999-08-25
I couldn't put this one down. It's taken from a journal kept by a German sergeant before and throughout his years as a prisoner of war in various camps in the United States. He speaks of his hunger, the work they had to do, his impressions of America and Americans, and his horror at the end of the war when he learned of the concentration camps in Germany. It is so well written that you can feel his longing for home and family, and his loyalty to his comrades, and his anger at not having enough to eat a lot of the time. I've read it, but I'm keeping it to re-read some time in the future.
