Sit down in your garden and read this one aloud to yourself. Dannye's voice is both sharp and subtle, laced with the soft, sweet pain of yesterdays that can't be retrieved. And her wry interpretation of the story of Adam and Eve gives fresh perspective to the genesis of tension--sexual and otherwise--between woman and man.

The story of the making of a film
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1996-06-11
When he was young, Michael Powell saw a documentary about the evacuation of Hirta (St. Kilda), he always wanted to make a film about it.

What happens when the people of a lonely, windswept island can no longer survive as a community ? This story examines the hardships of such a life and the decisions they must make, whether to stay where their families have worked & died to establish this hard-working community or to leave and give the next generation a better chance.

This book documents how Powell & his film crew stayed on the Hebridean island of Foula to make this dramatic film.

An excellent introduction to the turbulent period in Britain leading up to the First World War. The author divides his book into themes - constitutional reform, the Irish crisis, the suffragettes, etc - and makes everything much easier to understand than contemporaries must have found it. Solid analysis is combined with an exceptionally clear writing style.

Excellent Compact Biography for Young Readers
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-20
Having been a fan of Edwin Hubble since I first learned of him in high school in the early Fifties and read his classic work, The Realm of the Nebulae, while in college, I have collected everything about him I could find. He died suddenly during my senior year in high school and I was shocked and saddened to learn of it in the January, 1954 issue of Sky & Telescope magazine. I had long hoped a biography would be forthcoming but , except for a few brief ones in a few journals, no full length treatment was produced. I talked to Dr. Charles A. Whitney once about one he was to write which he told me was on hold but it never was completed. The first book with much biographical material was in a novel entitled Hubble Time published in 1987 which was about a fictional granddaughter. There is much biographical material in it about Hubble, however. One of its highlights is the publication of an essay about Hubble by Aldous Huxley which, according to the novel, had never been published. I well recall having read this very essay in the early Fifties! I had tried to find it several times since but could find no reference to it and it has been a great mystery where I read it. So, great was my surprise to find it in Hubble Time.

Finally, in 1989, a biography was published in Russia by two Russian scientists followed by Gale Christiansons excellent biography in 1995, both books long overdue. I also have copies of journals containing many of Hubble's scientific papers, all his books and a copy of his doctoral thesis. Now several volumes for young people have been written of which Mary Virginia Fox' is one. It is an excellent overview of his life and work for young people which can easily be read in one sitting and contains some photographs which I had not previously seen. It is good that such an important American astronomer, whose discoveries have been called "the most significant contributions to cosmology since Copernicus" and of whom Stephen Hawking has said "changed the concept of the universe more profoundly than anyone else", should be made known to a young generation. And Hubble's legacy continues in the profound new findings being produced with the great space telescope that appropriatly bears his name.

I would have loved to have had this excellent little book during my own early years.

A fun way to learn Florida's history

This is a great book for kids who like adventures, or for kids who like to learn history in a fun way. This is the perfect book for homeschoolers. I live on the opposite coast, but learned a lot about Florida's history and geography. It would be really fun for kids who actually live in that area, because they could identify with some of the places, and follow the mystery much more closely. It makes the reader want to visit the places where the events are occurring. I thought the characters were realistic and well-developed. My only negative comment about this book is the type-face that was chosen. I thought that made it more difficult to read. Everyone should read this book!

A horse tale for the younger reader.

For the horse-loving teenage girl or young woman this is an ideal read.
Suitable reading with some sad reality and moral characters to get to know.
The authors love of horses shines through this book. I have been past my teens for several decades and I enjoyed it too as Ive always treasured the beautiful equines.
It contains some events that are tragic but that's the reality of the horse world. These are experiences the young must learn to accept as a part of life.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who shares the feelings for the horse as Mrs. Powell surely does.

What a WONDERFUL book for children of all ages!

I bought this book mainly because I liked the "happy" cover, but it wasn't until I started reading the book that I began to get goose bumps all over me. The author (whose name is Nancy Powell) also illustrated the book as well, so this told me that I was dealing with a true artistic prodigy.

And the story? It's such a beautiful and heart-warming story (with lovely illusrations to match) that I would be doing Ms. Powell a huge disservice to try to describe it here with just a few sentences. So, let's just say that if you liked the Wizard of Oz, you'll LOVE EMMA JEAN'S DREAM, because it follows a similar underlying theme, except for one major difference.

EMMA JEAN'S DREAM is a story about a gorgeous little blonde dog named Emma Jean, who happened to eat so much cat food (because she also lived with several cats as well), that to her profound dismay, she actually turned into a cat one day!

I think that's all I can say without giving the entire book away. But I do want to close my little book review by saying that Emma's solution to her frightening problem is as ingenious as it was entertaining and even captivating. My 7 year old son and 10 year old daughter adore the book as well, because it is head and shoulders above ANY other children's book that I've EVER read. Wonderful job, Ms. Powell, and please know that we're all waiting for the sequel to your incredible masterpiece.

An intelligent, heartfelt guide to Tantra,& the Tao of sex..
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1997-04-28
Powell is looking at sex here with the eye of an engaged anthropologist. He asserts that sexuality is different from culture to culture. He then examines the tradition of courtly and romantic love in the West--and the orgasm-oriented approach of Western sex manuals. With this he contrasts traditions of sacred sexuality in India, China, Polynesia and the United States. Powell, however, offers not so much a fawning acceptance of Tantric and Taoist sexual yoga, as a critique. He then offers his own thoughts on sacred sexuality. Spiritual leader Da Free John, who resides in Fiji, placed this book on the required reading list for his circle of devotees. Originally published in English, the book has been translated in both Japanese (Hosei University Press) and Spanish (Thassalia)

Just went to the local bookstore to find some good books for my mother-in-law who has expressed an interest in family history. After reading through several excellent choices, I finally settled on Everything Family Tree by Kimberly Powell. The layout and format is very easy to follow and the writing is friendly, professional, and easy to understand. It covers every genealogy topic I can think of, including surname origins and DNA testing, plus research in all of the major record types. Not very expensive either, so I ended up buying a second copy for myself. An outstanding book for beginner to intermediate genealogists.
