I bought this to use in my 6th grade reading classroom. It is excellent to use to teach reading skills such as main idea, author's purpose, or summarizing. I put it in a center and students have 10 minutes to use the book for an assignment. Since it is at a lower reading level, students have success in building skills to use in higher level texts.

This book is a good addition to the grade 1-6 classroom library.

A superb biographical resource

The latest title in the simply outstanding "Greenwood Biography Series", Colin Powell: A Biography by Richard Steins is a straightforward narrative of the life and career of one of the most powerful African-Americans to have ever served in the United States military. Intended especially for use in high school and undergraduate research assignments, yet also suitably presentable for non-specialist general readers who simply want to know more about who Colin Powell is and how he came to hold the political authority in the Bush Administration that he does today, Colin Powell: A Biography is a superb biographical resource and strongly recommended for inclusion into school and community library Biography Collections.

As a teacher, I like the way this biography begins with Colin Powell's crowning achievement, becoming the Secretary of State under President George W. Bush. The author then flashes back to Colin Powell's childhood and we get to read how he made it to this very important position in our country.

This is an inspiring story of a son born to immigrant parents who came to the United States seeking a better life. Education was important in his family and Colin Powell entered City College in New York City as an engineering major. It was through trying different courses (ROTC) that Colin Powell found his calling.

There are certain features of this book that I really like. Ms. Shichtman has these side boxes (colored in a deep yellow) that give historical background information of what was happening in the world at different times in Colin Powell's life. With these boxes the reader can then understand the influence of Segregation, the Civil Rights movement, the Vietnam War, etc. had on Mr. Powell's life and his achievements. The author also has green boxes that contain quotes from Colin Powell that help define his life. The photographs were of Mr. Powell at various points of his life and there are also photographs of historical interest. The Chronology of Colin Powell's life at the back of the book gives a nice summary of his life.

I would recommend this book not only for young people studying about famous African Americans, but anyone wanting to learn about famous Americans.

This is a wonderful booklet it lists the essential colors to make all 450 color combinations and even contains pictures of all 450 color combinations! It also lists what colors to use for numerous things ex. various fruits, the seasons, birds, etc. This book saved me time from experimenting with colors. And money from buying alot of unnecessary paints-I just bought the paints listed and use the included grid to make any colors I want.

Excellent Color Source for Anyone

I've been an artist all my life and yet never really tackled watercolors.
So, since colors are the hardest part of watercolor painting, especially greens, I wanted a book that I could just glance at and have a recipe for the color I need. Sometimes you can end up with mud, or a color that clashes with your intention of the color you have in your head.
This book really helps me to just turn a page...pick a color I want and use the right combos to get the tone and hue I need.
It's a great tool. I highly recommend it for a beginner or anyone just wanting a color reference at their fingertips. It's a lot more time saving than making your own.

Judging in good faith

Review Date: 2008-06-19
The American constitution governs everything and everyone in America - or does it? When difficult situations create opportunities for diverse opinions as to whether the act in question was constitutional, the United States Supreme Court, by a majority of five, will determine decide what the answer should be. How does it do so? There are many books and opinions within the Supreme Court, in academia, and among lawyers as well as the public expounding the correct approach the Supreme Court should take in interpreting the constitution. Some like Justice Antonin Scalia are persuaded that formalism and originalism (not quite the same thing - the former sticks to rigid rules that bind judges in every generation, the latter a method of interpretation based on deciphering the intention of the framers of the constitution). Others like Ronald Dworkin eschews conformism to precedents merely for the sake of consistency and discipline. He prefers a more liberal approach based on moral principles (the irony is that many such principles, in fact, become rigid principles). H J Powell offers a different perspective to constitutional interpretation. He believes that difficult constitutional questions often may not have right or wrong answers. What matters in such situations is that the decision maker (he does not confine this noun to jsut the Supreme Court; he includes congress and anyone charged with having to interpret the constitution for whatever purpose) must act in good faith, encompassing honesty and humility. How this is achieved is not entirely clear, but Powell takes the reader through different circumstances in which alternative approaches are tested, and each time, flaws become apparent. The solution, favoured by the author, in such situations requires the decision maker acting fairly and in good faith. Methodology is one thing, but the person who has to choose which method and how to apply it is also important. The reader will nonetheless, be left wondering if this merely swithes the nature of the basic problem. In other words, a Right wing Christian will take one route and a secular liberal the opposite route. Both are likely to be sincere and would likely act in good faith. The problem that remains is that we are still unsure how to determine which is the right route; and thus, good faith may, in the end, be just an act of sweeping dirt under the carpet. The fact that Powell makes us think about these situations, and what might happen when good faith is absent is a compelling reason to read this book.

This is a great book for many reasons: it's a truly useful cookbook, the anecdotes re NY neighborhoods, and the perspective of a Firehouse cook has has seen and prepared it all! A wide variety of foods and cooking styles are included. My favorite is the Gourmet Irish Brisket, which always gets a rave review in my home.
