Each poem is a puzzle; the answers make you think for hours

I stumbled across Mrs. Powell's book of poetry two years ago when I was looking for some refreshing poetry. I read a couple of poems in the bookstore and decided to buy this book. The powerfulness of her poetry and her insightfulness didn't hit me until I read through the entire book at home. Her language choice, use of imagery, intelligence and style are unique and refreshing. Her poems are neither vulgar nor profane. These poems will give you hours of quiet reflection or hours of debate with your friends. Do you think you understand what the poem is about? Re-read it again and pay careful attention to the title of the poem or the language used; you'll realize that you probably missed the full meaning of the poem the first time around. I cannot wait for her next book of poetry. Buy this book to find out why!

This book has helped me tremendously. As a solo general surgeon recently out of residency, it is very helpful to have a GI atlas with great radiographs and endoscopic pictures with which to compare my patients' when I have a question.

I suppose I should say, just in case anyone has wandered here looking for a book of camp-fire songs, that the Baden Powell here is not the founder of the Boy Scouts (although named after him): he is Roberto Baden Powell de Aquino (1937-2000), the prolific and virtuosic Brazilian guitarist. In fact, this is not properly a songbook at all, since it comprises only instrumentals.

It is one of three volumes of guitar pieces, Volume 1 being here. Volume 3 is, as I write, not listed here but is listed by Amazon UK. The contents of this volume are:

Babel
Deve ser Amor
Maritima
E de Lei
Tempo feliz
Acalanto das Nonas
Valse Nº 1
Retrato Brasileiro
Chará
Fim de Linha
Ultimo Porto (II)

The transcriptions are painstaking and (as far as I can make out) extremely accurate.

Some of these numbers require percussion or other accompaniment for best effect; others, such as "Acalanto das Nonas" and "Retrato Brasileiro" make extremely effective solos.

These pieces are of course not for beginners -- but if you're familiar with Baden Powell, you already knew that.

Staff notation only.

Sentimentos
Consolação
Canto de Xango
Tema Triste
Petite Valse
O Cego Alderaldo
Só Por Amor
Valsa Sem Nome
Insonia

The transcriptions are painstaking and (as far as I can make out) extremely accurate, except that the key signature for "Valsa Sem Nome" should not be one flat but zero flats, as the fingering makes clear (B on open 2nd string in the first full bar).

Some of these numbers require percussion or other accompaniment for best effect; others make extremely effective solos, the aforementioned waltz particularly so.

These pieces are of course not for beginners -- but if you're familiar with Baden Powell, you already knew that.

Very relevant combination in IT today..
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 14 total.

I work with a lot of school leavers and people outside IT and often have to advise them on how to empower themselves in IT in the right way. Surely SQL and databases are one of the first topics people should understand. HTML was also high on the list. With this book, the author has combined all of them in one making it a very relevant combination for today's beginner. I will recommend this book to school leavers, financial people and people outside IT wanting to empower themselves quickly. Another great advantage of XML and databases is the platform independence. Very well done to the author for combining these topics at the entry level in such an easiliy understandable way!

Enjoy and Savor each story!

I have not had much exposure to short stories, but after reading Behind the Front Door by John Powell Riley I will seek them out. I enjoyed the succinct writing in each story and the twists that Riley offered in many endings. I was amazed by the experiences he has had in his lifetime and was delighted by his storytelling.

This collection takes you on a journey that includes Texas, the French Riveria, Tokyo, Athens, Madrid, Rome and the USS Nashville. His life experiences are extremely interesting and he presents them with an air of humor and sophistication.

The back cover closes with ''Read and enjoy.'' It is my approximation that you will do just that. This is a good read that might cause tinges of jealousy due to his exciting and interesting life experiences. His willingness to share his memories is wonderful. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in reading a well-crafted collection of short stories.

The passing of an era...
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-23
Let me explain that I've known the pricipals in this little book for most of my life, first coming to Saganaga to my father's cabin when I was ten years old. My remembrances of family and friends, and Frank and Bill Powell and Charlotte and Betsy in this wondrous place I will always revere as a great gift of good fortune.

So to hear Betsy's recollections of her life on "Big Sag" is of surpassing interest to me and my family. We've always known her to be feisty and outspoken, but to hear her talk about her life in the wilderness and to tell us about day to day details of which we unaware adds another dimension and deeper appreciation of a time which will soon pass.

I was especially touched by how her admiration and deep love for Frank Powell is obvious on almost every page of her book. Frank was, simply, a beautiful man, quiet, with one of the most heart-warming smiles I have ever seen. He is long gone now, as are Dorothy and Bill Powell, and Charlotte also went to be with the Saints some years ago.

So Betsy's version of history is the last to be recorded, and like all autobiographys is somewhat biased. Those details, however, are not important any more. If you love the BWCAW, the border lakes of Minnesota, or simply a good read about a life away from civilisation, you'll like this book
