This book is a worthy addition to the libarary of anyone who is interested in the art produced by African Americans and artists of the African diaspora. The renowned art historian Richard Powell is an astute and knowledgeable scholar who is able to make the various and wide ranging works come alive. No complicated, unecessary, and verbose "art speak" here, just clear, insightful writing about a subject the author knows intimately. The illustrations are fine, and provide ample and exciting visual evidence to support the written information. You will want to have this book and others by the same author on your bookshelf.

Peter Paris has been acknowledged in Black America Religious Community as one of the most dynamic, energizing, critical, but analytical thinkers of the 20th Century. He used his skills and scholarly approach to examine four of the most influential Black Religious Leaders during the Civil Rights era. He correctly assesses the message of each leader, and proceeds to examine them in light of their impact on a changing society. Persons who read this writing would be introduced to the background of each leader, their family heritage, and the impact of their family life, religious knowledge, and educational impact on their leadrship styles. An excellent, thorough discussion of each personality and how though diverse they were unified in their efforts for the movement.

I love some of the quotes in ths book and they show lots of wisdom. For example the following:
"A man who claims to know what is good for others, is dangerous."
There are many pearls of wisdom in this volume including an interview with Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj and some of his teachings. This may look new age but it is really very much old eastern rooted teachings. Very enlighenting reading experience. I highly recommend this book.

This book takes you from initial thoughts about changing from traditional scheduling, to parent, teacher, and community support for block scheduling, to designing a block schedule that works for your school. The book gives many different possible schedules. (This book does not include information on 4 x 4 block scheduling that some schools are using today). Rationale and research for block scheduling are included. The best parts of the book for me, as a teacher, were how to use the 90 minutes effectively and not simply as two 45-minute classes. There is an extensive list of student involvement activities, help with lesson planning, and several sample lesson plans with grading rubrics. A great resource for someone new to block schedules.

Odd Account of Little Known History

Frequently when we study history we fail to realize how fragile health was in pre technological early American life. Yellow fever worked its manevolence on the average of an outbreak every 10 years back in the 18th century. The plague of 1793 was particularly bad, and here is its chronicle. The writer, John Powell, was a scholar and reasearch director of the Free Library of Philadelphia. With access to the papers of Dr. Benjamin Rush his account is a factual, and thougough study of the great plague. It is fully indexed, illustrated, and annotated; with an interesting editor's preface in addition to the author's preface, and afterwards.

"The Buffalo Soldiers performed with distinction during the post-Civil War opening of the West, and they did so despite routinely being selected for the most dangerous, arduous, and tedious assignments. They were often despised by the very people they protected, for the color of their uniforms (Union blue) and of their faces. Beyond showing enormous bravery in battle with many of the Indian Nation's most adept fighters, they strung telephone lines, guarded railroad crews, built roads, escorted mail parties, and erected forts from the Dakotas to the Rio Grande. The photographs in this book of postcards celebrate the Buffalo Soldiers in portraits, official documentation, and candid shots of army life in the Wild West.

So to hear Betsy's recollections of her life on "Big Sag" is of surpassing interest to me and my family. We've always known her to be feisty and outspoken, but to hear her talk about her life in the wilderness and to tell us about day to day details of which we unaware adds another dimension and deeper appreciation of a time which will soon pass.
I was especially touched by how her admiration and deep love for Frank Powell is obvious on almost every page of her book. Frank was, simply, a beautiful man, quiet, with one of the most heart-warming smiles I have ever seen. He is long gone now, as are Dorothy and Bill Powell, and Charlotte also went to be with the Saints some years ago.
So Betsy's version of history is the last to be recorded, and like all autobiographys is somewhat biased. Those details, however, are not important any more. If you love the BWCAW, the border lakes of Minnesota, or simply a good read about a life away from civilisation, you'll like this book
