Brightly illustrated with hand painted wood block prints "Amazing Apples" tells young readers everything about apples from A to Z. Easy to understand poems trace an apple orchard through the four seasons of the year, emphasizing the miracle of regrowth and the importance of sunshine and water.
Young readers meet the family that tends the orchard and witness harvesting, the making of cider, and canning of fruit. The slim volume concludes with a brief essay offering further information about apples and suggestions for the use of apples.
Some say apples are our favorite fruit - this may well be one of your youngster's favorite books.

INCREDIBLE TALE OF CONVICT LEASE SYSTEM
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

Review Date: 2008-06-27
The author was a convict work camp supervisor for 14 years. The book is a memoir of his work experiences related to Florida's convict labor lease system. From about 1877 to 1925 contractors paid the state a yearly fee to lease convicts to build railroads, mine phosphate, pick fruit & vegetables, and collect naval stores from the pine forests.
The system was ripe with abuse. Many people were simply kidnapped by the local sheriffs and sent to the work camps. Everyone from the sheriff to the governor got a piece of the fee. The sheriffs preyed on tourists, vagabonds, youths, and local nuisances. The contractors disciplined the convicts with whippings. Children as young as 4 years were sent to the camps.
The state finally abolished the system when a lumber company whipped a sick boy to death. The boy had pneumonia and his death outraged and embarrassed people.
The book is well written and very interesting.

Great history and a flashback to a very different time

Powell writes about his experiences running a (by todays standards) very brutal work camp for leased prisoners. Great reading not only for the details of how these turn of the century camps operated, but about life in early Florida. He describes the problems traveling throughout the state where there are no roads, avoiding lawless counties, being sized up by moonshiners, and attitudes of the locals. I only wish it were a longer book

I received this book as a Christmas present and read it the following week. Since then, I have either recommended it to friends or purchased copies as gifts to friends.
If you are interested in Appalachian history, American history during the depression years, or interested in the current debate in our country about eminent domain, there is something in it for you. These letters and the research that they inspired give a unique perspective of a particular time and place in American history. It helped me to understand better the complex fabric of our whole country.

Well, maybe -everyone- shouldn't own this book, but any self-respecting, rock-banging Anglo Saxonist would do well to have a look. And if you can't spring for the 85 clams they're asking, then have your university library order up a copy.

I first bought this book for my daughter because she was fascinated by my art books but flummoxed by the text. She was enchanted by the book! It gives an insight into many of the great works of the era - including images that she has seen portrayed in pop art of this century, as well as in advertising and other media.
If you have a child who is artistic or is merely interested in the images that make up our world today, this is an excellent grounding in a complex and colourful topic.

This book is by far one of the best books I have ever read. A girlfriend and I saw a newspaper article about this book and author, it turns out she lives in the same small town as us!!! We decided to make it our January book club pick....and WOW!!! I loved it from page 1 to 374!!! I couldn't put it down. The things that "Julie" discovers about herself in this book is empowering for all women. We had the pleasure of having Cathy at our book club meeting, and to discover that she herself had Never been in the situations like Julie, was simply amazing!! You would have thought she had experienced it herself. This is a must read for any reader...I would give it 10 stars on a scale of one to five!!!! I'm anxiously waiting for her next book...
