...then Mr. Pitts would definitely be serving time. The Conscience Market is one intriguingly angry bit of poetry and philosophy, with Pitts occasionally displaying a touch of humorous social commentary ala George Carlin or Bill Hicks, and even sporadic tomes of deep sentiment. If you are a fan of Rush Limbaugh, George Bush, Rumsfeld, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, or Anne Coulter, you might want to avoid this book, as the author unleashes somewhat of a verbal buttwhoopin' on the neo-cons. However, if you have an interest in Nietzsche, Darwin, Sagan, Beethoven, Glenn Gould, Kafka, Coltrane, Rimbaud, William Blake, Christ, etc., all of the above are discussed, debated, or were influential in the writing of The Conscience Market. This is Humanism at its best...

a view of the recent endeavors in physics
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-23
The essays in this book on Schopenhauer(German philosopher) and Einstein, as well as the essay 'Contemporary REsearch on Space and Time" are rather titillating accounts. Mathematical expertise is not necessary to appreciate many of these essays. A very interesting look at the most recent developments in physics, includes an article by David Albert among others. Knowledge of the basics of modern physics is extremely helpful, consult a book like "the quest for unity" or Heisenberg's book on 'physics and philosohy'.

This issue of Scandinavian Fairy Tales is in the classic 60's tradition of reading to and then having young children learn to read to their parents. The stories have a mainstream yet wondeful north European flavor that is enhanced by the classic artwork by Santin. This book was part of my childhood and now it's part of my children's childhood - and I hope it will be part of my grandchildren's childhood. ;)

Cinematic Poetry
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-01-08
Robyn Selman's "Directions to My House" is a journey for the mind. Her poems are cinematic, story-full, and emotional. She moves between the mundane and the profound and makes them spin into a web of meaning while refusing to tell us which aspect has more value. It is a lovely difficult trip, with family, with friends, with nature, on drugs, with men and a belated coming of age in "Lesbos." A skilled poet, she describes the ineffable with brightness and clarity. It is a beautiful book you will return to again and again for further adventures in poetry.

Janis Scalone's book, DISTANT THUNDER: An Integrated Skills Approach to Learning Language Through Literature (Pitt Series in Esl) is compiled in such a way as to make it both informative and entertaining. Not only are the stories and poems Scalone has chosen entertaining and enriching, but the exercises for the students are likewise informative and enlightening, presented in a way that helps them experience the many and varied cultures represented in the literature chosen for inclusion in the text. I found it a delight to read for any audience.

Contemporary poems

Review Date: 2008-08-18
This collection of poems is broken down into three parts. To me those parts are: hope, sorrow and beauty of nature that re-affirms our lives. Two of the poems strucked me from this selection: one was of dying person who appreciates nature, people and beauty all around. The second best is the one about a young girl on her first day of going to school. Poems will definitely be close to female sensitivities as many of the poems reflect on the relationship between woman and man, motherhood and friendship.

A fascinating critique of scholarship on El Salvador
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1999-06-21
This is a fascinating critique of how North American scholars have interpreted revolutionary movements in El Salvador and, by implication, neighboring Central American countries. The "dominant paradigm" is the idea that injustice + reactionary governments = revolution. Why have Latin America scholars lagged behind others in studying revolution in terms of culture, ideology and agency? Grenier's focus on the role of the Salvadoran universities and political-military organizations suggests an answer. The dominant paradigm removes the revolutionary vanguard from scrutiny. Not being a specialist on El Salvador, I hope to see Grenier's approach taken seriously and debated by other Central America scholars.
