Specialist books such as this are few and far between. It is a good thing then, that this book is by no means a let down in any department. It contains concise and factual information about the genus Cypripedium, ranging from cultural details, to taxonomic and nomenclatural discussion, and including information on the distribution and relative rarity of the species the genus encompasses. The photography and art presented within is of fantastic quality, and helps to complete a very thorough and admiral work covering these North American and Pan-European gems. Superlatives abound.

I began reading this book after I had read many of George MacDonald's books that were edited by Michael Phillips. The book does an excellent job of explaining life events that influenced MacDonald's writings and relating those life events to the books George MacDonald wrote during those times. Familiarity with the books has helped me relate more to his life. Having read this book, I have a MUCH better understanding of George MacDonald, his relationships with family members and his faith in God. It makes me appreciate his books even more.

The definitive work.

This is the "must have" edition of George Washington's Rules of Civility. Beautifully bound in leather and richly illustrated by 18th Century period prints, this brief, 128 page, 8.25 by 5.25 inch, handsome work fits easily in your coat pocket or brief case. This attractive book is the perfect gift for every young person and adult alike whether they are a casual leisure reader, a student, or a scholar; no one will be diappointed. This edition will be enjoyed and appreciated at every level of reader interest. Each rule has been written as Washington himself recorded the maxim. The editor's stated intent being to retain the feel of Colonial America. Each rule is numbered consecutively and presented in over-sized type. If the reader chooses to read more deeply he or she will be richly rewarded and discover an excellant example of careful scholarly research. The edtitor has reached back to the very origin of the Rules of Civility in 1595. He makes it possible to trace the development of the Rules of Civility over 300 years thereby placing Washington and Colonial America within its own rich historical context. By presenting each rule with its earlier texts it is possible for the reader to discover the evolution of each rule for him or herself. Under each numbered rule is printed its earlier version as it appeared in previous centuries. Where the rule was printed in French it is recordered here in the original middle French and then carefully translated into English. The work is well documented. I give this edition the highest possible recommendation to all readers.

More than your usual POW Story

I was prompted to buy this book by the fact that I was born in the Bridgend area in 1948 and knew many of the people associated with the Island Farm Camp and the recapture of the escapees. What I got, as an unexpected bonus, was an outstanding over view of the run up to WW2, the fortunes of those who came to the Camp and those who were to come there. Peter Phillips' style of writing makes for an unputdownable book and his extensive research helps gives a hitherto unseen slant on how the War effected the lives ordinary folk, as well as those who had a direct influence on its outcome. A fascinating account of our recent history for which Mr Phillips is to be congratulated.

Great collection of essays by an acclamied master
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-11
A wonderful collection of personal essays from Phillip Lopate, considered a master of the genre. Very engaging stories written in a very accessible style that belies the craft behind them.

The relating of his experience producing "Uncle Vanya" with young schoolchildren completely fascinated me. His stories regarding his family are equally engaging. An essay about a fellow teacher who commits suicide has rarely left my thoughts since I read it two weeks ago.

It seems cliched to say that the stories work on a variety of levels. However, while reading the Uncle Vanya story I found myself fascinated not only with Chekhov's play, but how we underestimate children, how we relate to children, how schools educate children, the empowering nature of theater, etc. The essay is so rich with ideas that it was literally inspiring.

I found myself unable to put the book down. As it got later and later, I would tell myself "just one more".

I'm only sorry that it took me so long to discover him. Thanks to his brother Leonard for having Phillip on his radio show. I've found a shelfmate for my Thurber and Benchley anthologies.

After reading Phillips book I saw my fourteen year old daughter differently. I saw her as she really is and now she is free to show me her best self. I no longer contribute to her need to hide from me. Our trust has skyrocketed and we are having fun again. Don't let anyone convince you that the teens have to be terrible. Just ask Phillip and read his books.
