This is a terrific introduction to DOS written by an experienced instructor. The overview of what a computer is gives "newbies" descriptions of the basic functions of computing and of computer hardware.

The DOS instructions and exercises are logically laid out and the new learner experiences success immediately. The material covers basic commands, memory configuration, using the DOS Shell and practical exercises such as copying files and backing up your hard drive.

Additionally, commands used in each chapter are listed in "Command Reference" sections that are easy to use and refer to.

I have two copies of this book. One is pulled apart for easy access to the Command References and other sections; the other is entact for use as a reference when I am explaining a basic DOS function to a co-worker. This was one of my first textbooks when I began a computer career. It has remained one of my best references. If you need a quick guide to DOS, a refresher course, or want to teach the basics to someone, I highly recommend this book.

How gay Mormons manage the contradictions in their lives
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2004-10-20
A sociological study of homosexuals and homosexuality within the Mormon church. The book points out that many gay Protestants in conservative denominations can easily switch to a more liberal church and harmonize their faith with their sexual orientation. This is not the case for Mormons. Mormonism has a distinctive theology, and sees itself as the only true church. It is also a very anti-gay organization. Thus, when gay Mormons try to meet their spiritual needs, they find themselves in a terrible bind. The book is an interesting study of ordinary people in an impossible predicament, and an informative portrait of a conservative church that has been forced to confront gay people within its ranks.

While most consider Fisher's Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits to be his classic, I believe this book to be superior. The timing of the book is outstanding. Written at the bottom of the '73-'74 bear market, Fisher makes a case to buy stocks. A quote from the introduction makes this clear. "This book will, I hope, throw light on whether the problems that helped produce the recent bear market have created a condition where stock ownership is just a trap for the unwary or whether, as in every prior major bear market in U.S. history, they have created a magnificent opportunity for those with the ability and the self-discipline to think for themselves and to act independently of the popular emotions of the moment." Fisher goes on to state the many factors which make a great company. Being on Wall Street for 12 years, I have read many investment books, most of which are quite lacking. Along with his work done in 1980, Developing An Investment Philosophy, this is a must read for serious investors, and should be required reading in business schools.

Outstanding Southern recipes with less fat, quicker cooking

I received Ann Byrn's book in 1988 as a gift from Susan Byrn, my coworker and the author's sister. It has been our favorite cookbook for the last decade. We grew up in Arkansas and Louisiana, so updated southern favorites (lower fat, modern processing) are right up our alley. My husband loves to make Red Beans and Rice, the Seafood Gumbo is our special occasion recipe, and I am always asked to bring Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie to family holidays. I've won raves at pot luck meals with Seven-Layer Salad and Southwestern Squash Casserole. I am so pleased to see this book back in print so I can give it to my friends and family. And Susan, if you're out there-- send me email!

Robert Etheridge Townsend, a young writer, recounts his twelve amatory encounters on his path to a conventional life style. Within his tales, he left an account of the behaviors of members of a relict leisure class in which ancestry, snobbery and pride of place were kept alive by infusions of wealth acquired through marriages of convenience.

Life Lessons and Good Entertainment
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-15
This is a story about Competence ("Compy") Ames, a young woman who grew up in Brahamin Boston in the 1920's and 1930s and of her struggle with her parent's divorce, her overbearing mother and her effort to get to college and subsequently - in the early 1940's - to become a doctor in the face of the male-dominated medical profession. Against the back ground of WWII and the shortage of doctors due to the war, the book chronicles the life of a young woman determined to break into the male bastion of surgery and of her romances, including her operating room romance with the Chief of Surgery. The book, which is drawn in part from the author's real life experiences as a woman doctor, is rich in detail and vivdly conveys Compy's difficult childhood and professional and romantic struggles. The book, which is an easy and comfortable read, as well as being good entertainment, is amply sprinkled with life lessons drawn from the author's long and notable life. When you come to the end of the book, you will be eager for more. The author is currently working on a sequel that is due to be published in 2006 or early 2007.

Carl Philips is a wonderful poet and this collection is among his best. His language is precise and yet magical. His understanding of topics such as desire and aging are truly amazing. His poem "The Hustler Speaks of Places" is a beautiful homage to Langston Hughes.

"Counting" is a typically brilliant work by a talented author. The reader should not be discouraged to discover that "Counting" ultimately adds up to nothing at all. After all, what matters here is style, not substance.
