This is a terrific read, one of my keepers. The heroine is a self-help guru and the hero an actor who plays super-villains in the movies.
When they meet each of them is unraveling in different ways. They plunge in and have great sex right off the bat and they gradually develop a great friendship.
This is a dynamic, fun read... as I said an all-time favorite of mine.
This author has never disappointed me though. Woody Allen once said, "the worse sex I had ever had was pretty good." The same can be said for Susan Elizabeth Phillips' books.

Journey of Healing & Wholeness

This is a book to listen to, feel, ponder--an important
contribution to a growing literature on the discovery and recovery of American Indian identity, culture, spirituality, and traditional knowledge or science. For Phillip H. Duran, a Tiwa Indian, scientist, and Christian, the search for identity and purpose is the central theme of this "difficult introspective journey of self-exploration and internal conflict." In his journey to reclaim his Pueblo identity, Duran speaks candidly about the difficulty of deconstructing old paradigms, shedding conformist ways of thinking, and recovering traditional paradigms in order to reconstruct a wholistic spiritual and integrated scientific worldview. I grew up among the Anishinaabeg and thought I had a pretty good understanding of the history of the European occupation of Turtle Island for the past 500 years. But Duran's insights into the ideology of Manifest Destiny and our government's systematic extermination of the original nations of this land helped me to ask new questions and think beyond my historical, cultural, and spiritual assumptions. His exposure of the American Church's witting and unwitting complicity in this nation's project of cultural and spiritual genocide is honest, fair, and heart-rending. The genocidal policies and practices of our government and churches, often hand in hand, have left a legacy of pain, loss, and grief in many indigenous communities of North America. As I began reading this book, I wondered if this shameful and violent legacy could be overcome. I wondered how the culture could be restored, and where hope could be found. Duran doesn't answer all of these questions, at least not in any complete sense, but he does gather up fragments of history, culture, spirituality, and traditional knowledge, while following the path of his personal story, in a magnificent effort to find the meaning of his own life, the richness of his own culture, the beauty of his own people, the depth of his own spiritual traditions. In making this journey, Duran reclaims the strengths that have sustained the Pueblo and other Native communities of Turtle Island for generations of occupation and oppression. This is an important book about an important journey taken with great pain, unbelievable gentleness and respect, an unsettling humility and humor, and breathgiving faith and hope. Read widely, this personal and courageous journey has the potential to move the church, if not the nation-through repentance, reconciliation, and restorative justice-toward partnership in recovering and celebrating the personal, cultural, spiritual, and national identities of the original inhabitants of North America. I highly recommend this book to those who are beginning to understand the breadth and depth of the wound festering in the heart of the church and in the history of this nation. --Rev. Dr. Bruce D. Martin, Director, United Campus Ministry, Penn State University, University Park, PA

I may be a bit prejiduced because this book was actually found in my grandmothers house, signed by the author. My grandmother had contributed help and info and pics to the author (as had my great grandmother) Both grew up in Bristol, as did my fathers entire family. Bud Phillips really grew to love the area and has truly captured so much history, the good and the bad and the sometimes funny, and color of the region. It (the book) may not interest someone from another area but the thing to remember is every area has a colorful history like Bristol, and after reading this book someone may want to know the history of their area, maybe in the process even spawning some new researchers and authors. Give it a try, as well as his other books......you may be quite pleasantly surprised

Illuminating survey of our opposition to Labour's capitalist policies
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-14
This fascinating survey studies the British people's reaction to the Labour government. It examines key areas of government policy - the redistribution of wealth, pensions, the work-life balance, higher education, home ownership, health, transport, the European Union, and trade unions.

73% of us think that the gap between rich and poor is too large. 90% favour tax and spending policies which reduce this gap, yet the government's policies have widened it. People's top priority for extra spending on benefits is pensions - 41% thought so in 1983, 59% in 2003. Instead, the governments policies are wrecking our pension schemes.

The studies show that more people now use flexible working options, that people strongly supported both vocational and academic education, and that the vast majority aspire to own their own homes, however many obstacles governments and banks put in their way.

In 2004 there was a 10% fall in satisfaction with dental services because it is so hard to find a dentist who does NHS work. Satisfaction with other parts of our NHS held steady, showing how much we dislike the government's privatising our health service.

Network Rail gets twice the public money that British Rail got pre-privatisation. No wonder 96% back improving public transport. It's a pity the survey did not ask people whether they would like the railways to be renationalised.

More and more we oppose the EU, which the government loves. 56% of us would vote against the EU Constitution, 20% would vote for. 57% wanted to reduce the EU's influence, 10% wanted to increase it (compared to 37% and 40% respectively in 1992).

Trade unionists are now far less pro-Labour than they used to be. Given all these findings about what people actually want, it is astounding that anyone still votes for any of the pro-capitalist parties, Labour included, because the parties all oppose what the vast majority of us want.

a place to begin understanding Body Dysmorphic Disorder

If you are reading a review of this book, you must have heard something about Body Dysmorphic Disorder that caught your attention. My young son was finally diagnosed with Body Dysmorphic Disorder when he was 20 years old. He had been suffering for many years and his suffering had led to very dysfunctional behavior including drug abuse, the inability to go to school, to keep a job, or to cooperate with us enough for him to be able to live at home. He had walked away from drug treatment programs that focused first on the drug abuse and not on the underlying anxiety disorder. We had seen and worked with several different therapists during his life. He was always anxious and shy. No one ever asked any of the questions that would have pointed to the diagnosis of Body Dysmorphic Disorder. He even tried to talk to me about his fears that there was something wrong with different body parts and I had no clue what he was trying to tell me and I just reassured him that "everyone is not perfectly proportional" or that "everyone thinks there is something wrong with their body as they are growing up." Once he was diagnosed, the psychiatrist gave him an article about BDD which included this author's name. My son was able to call and talk with her, which helped him begin to feel he was not alone and not crazy. I purchased this book for him and we both read it. It is true, the book does not outline therapy and is not a form of therapy. We were able to find a Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist who specialized in BDD and related disorders. She was helpful, but not the whole answer, either. This is a disorder that causes its sufferers great pain, and its suffering is extremely difficult for other people to understand. My son just turned 21 and he is doing well now. I think this book can be one important part in understanding BDD and searching for your own path to healthy functioning if you or someone you love suffers from BDD.

The publishers' reviews above give you an idea of the plot, but not of the beauty of the writing or the way that it blends together the fantastic, impossible, and purely human to create a book that (I found, at least) lingers with you long after you've finished it. We begin with Rye, suffering from amnesia but more importantly synesthesia, a disorder in which sight, sound, touch and taste all merge and change places in her 'fevers,' leaving her inhabiting a world where the everyday is bizarre-- and then the bizarre starts happening. As Rye and her manipulative, guilt-ridden guardian/lover/betrayer Bardo shift from one world to another, she searches through her own madness and the happenings around her to try to untangle the truth before it's too late for her. In the end, tho', it's Rye and Bardo's humanity that makes this book worth reading, and the simplicity of the emotions with which the story ends. I read a *lot* of scifi/fantasy; I thought this was outstanding when I read it, and a month later I still find myself thinking about it. Definitely an original, and well worth reading.

All too often the Bushmen (otherwise known as the San) have been portrayed in school textbooks and in the minds of the general public as "living fossils" whose ways of life have remained the same throughout the ages. Associate-Professor Smith et al. demolish the myth and present a vivid picture of Bushmen social and economic dynamics down through the ages, as well as the interaction with incoming cultural groupings and the effects thereof. Anyone who is interested in the remarkable history, both past and contemporary, of the Bushmen will find this book an invaluable addition to their library.

A colleague had this book and we all used it on a regular basis because, as engineers, our job requires us to present everything with data. Therefore, we need to understand the statistics behind the data. This book is very easy to read and understand for those of us that have some statistical background but are not experts. It was a great reference for our group. Now that that colleague has left, we needed to get another copy!!
