A Literary Treasurechest....

Fritz Leiber aptly dubbed H. P. Lovecraft "a literary Copernicus," for his liberating of Weird Literature from the thrall of hackneyed superstition. But Lovecraft clearly spent most of his time not writing fiction, or ghostwriting fiction for others, but rather corresponding with a huge list of faithful correspondents. Many of these correspondents would drop Lovecraft a letter consisting of three paragraphs and receive in reply thirty pages, written single-spaced front and back in a tiny, cramped handwriting! It was in his letters that Lovecraft poured out his personality, his opinions, and his (not always reliable) erudition. The total number of letters he wrote during his lifetime is almost impossible to estimate, and alas only a tiny fraction survive, but that tiny fraction would apparently fill around 20 volumes the size of this one, if published unabridged! If you love Lovecraft, you need to read these letters. I'd recommend beginning with the final volume, containing letters for the last few years up to his death (1937) and then delving into the earlier letters, going back to his amateur press days. It's in these letters that you see the "real" Lovecraft, warts and all... and these letters also somewhat paradoxically contain some of his best writing on any topic or theme.

If you find Lovecraft's fiction rewarding, read his letters

Despite the strangeness of H.P. Lovecraft's imaginative fiction, and his nearly as strange personal life, he was a lucid and engaging letter writer. His observations on matters worldly, personal, and literary illuminate his life and times. Fortunately for us his many correspondents cherished and preserved his letters

Apparently in 1954, the year Frida passed away, Diego Rivera had her dressing room and bathroom at the Casa Azul locked, with the stipulation that it could be opened 50 years later. In 2004 the day came to unlock the room, and discover its contents. This book explores those contents, which included many of Fridas clothes, hair ribbons, medical devices, linens, etc. Its an amazing archeological discovery of sorts. A time capsule that reveals much about the day to day life of what has become one of the most influential women artists in history. Lavish color photographs of her clothing, paired with photos and paintings in which they appear; a treasure for those passionate about the life, art and fashion of Frida Kahlo. Really destined to become a personal favorite.

Simon Girty Review, The Aspen Times Weekly, 7/29/08 by Su Lum

Review Date: 2008-07-30
Phillip Hoffman's book, "Simon Girty Turncoat Hero," is the culmination of 19 years of research into the history of the lesser-known but pivotal Frontier warfare that took place during the Revolutionary War.

Hoffman shows us that the Revolutionary War was not just an East Coast war about taxes on tea and obedience to the king, it was also (perhaps mainly) about the British attempt to control the development of the West by joining with numerous Indian tribes to keep American settlers from streaming into Kentucky and Ohio and on to the West Coast which, of course, they eventually did.

Three prominent figures in the Frontier war were Simon Girty, Alexander McKee and Matthew Eliott, all American agents stationed at Fort Pitt (Pittsburgh) who, after working for the colonists, decided to throw in on the side of the Indians and the British, in part due to the treacherous way the Indians were being treated.

This triple defection was a serious blow to the Americans, since all three men were fluent in the Indian languages (Girty and McKee had both been young captives; Eliott was a trader), very useful as translators and spies for the British.

If the British had won the war, these men would have been hailed as heroes. The Indians, it goes without saying, would have ended up being screwed either way. As it was, the three were branded as traitors and Girty, "Dirty Girty," took the brunt of the colonists' wrath, wrongly blamed for every atrocity. Over a century after these events, my mother remembered being told, "You'd better behave or Simon GIRTY will get you," as if he were the bogeyman personified.

My great-great-great-great grandmother, Margaret Paulee Erskine, was captured by a group of Shawnee Indians in 1779 and lived in Shawnee towns in Ohio until her ransom in 1783.

Margaret's narrative mentioned all of these men (who lived in close proximity and had Indian wives) in positive terms. Simon Girty had assured her she would not be forced to marry or cohabitate; McKee had saved her life. I've been waiting for a book that told the true story and here it is.

"Simon Girty Turncoat Hero" is a scrupulously researched, fascinating account of the events surrounding the Frontier war in general and an exoneration of Simon Girty in particular.

Phillip Hoffman has managed to take a mountain of raw data (battles, treaties made and broken, both sides floundering through the woods with short supplies, runners routinely sent on 100-mile foot-journeys to deliver messages) and turn it into a very readable account of "how the West was lost."

Hoffman's career as a screenwriter served him well in this endeavor. Girty, his friends, members of his family, and the Native Americans they lived and fought for, spring to life on the pages of his book, which, in other hands, might have come across as dry as dust.

Simon Girty, "The Most Hated Man on the Early American Frontier," a man with a large price on his head and a gash in it as well (coshed by an Indian chief during a drunken brawl), emerges as a person both tender and tough, who loved his family and was a champion in the Indian cause to hold onto their land.

It may perhaps be a small choir that Hoffman sings to, but for anyone interested in the history of the Revolutionary War, this book is a must-read.

I have read almost all of the books and articles about Uncle Simon and I must say this book by Phil Hoffman is the most accurate in-depth account of Simon Girty , his life and the Girty family of the 1700s that I have had the plesure to read. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in Early America and its heros. Kenneth E Girty Renfrew, Pennsylvania

Fantastic Simon Primer!

This DVD is the complete set of what had previously been 2 separate vhs tapes. Simon's playing is, of course, incredible. For any drummer interested in Simon's playing this is a must. There are some advanced concepts here, but Simon is extremely good at explaing what is going on in simple language. For those who are more musically literate there were two instruction books based on the videos. The video can be seen as a progression from simpler (well simple for Simon) material to more advanced. Something like 'Cosmos' can be approached at a much easier level than say 'Force Majeure.' The section on Odd Time is great, and if you buy the instructional books, there are play-alongs to all of the material. Also, in terms of sheer performance Simon is always so exciting to watch that even if you don't play drums near that level, you will love the 'Concert' footage.

Author Phillips certainly knows his subject. His material is well researched. No studio hype here. The photos are so crisp and clear, they seem to jump off the page and sit in your lap. For those who grew up during the 30's, 40's and 50's this book is like stepping back to those days. For everyone else, you can see and hear, what you missed. America still needs these kind of heroes. The biographical information on the 25 western stars is brief and accurate. Excellent reference book.

This book is worth the purchase price for the beauty of its photographs alone. What a treat--it's the loveliest orchid reference book I've seen. In situ photos of the Vietnamese slippers abound, as do detailed climate charts and habitat info. Great for the armchair gardener, but a must-have for the Paphiopedilum collector. The only way you'd get a better idea of the growing conditions and habitat of these plants would be if you traveled to Vietnam yourself.

A superb slipper orchid reference book

The book contains about 308 pages composed of: 54 pages on Vietnam flora and habitat, 34 pages on the anatomy, ecology, and distribution of orchids, 178 pages about individual slipper orchid species found in Vietnam (22 species), 20 pages on the conservation, 9 pages on literature referenced, and a 14 page index.

The text is far more extensive than just "slipper orchids" or "Vietnam". Rather it also introduces the flora, habitat, and physical geography of Vietnam, and it covers all slipper orchids of southeast Asia in very complete detail.

The last 2/3rds of the book is a treasure of information about the individual species of Vietnam slippers. It contains lots of field pictures, closeups of the flowers, flower diagrams, and distribution maps. I was impressed with the completeness of the treatment for each orchid. This is a superb slipper orchid reference book.

If you are a Paphiopedilum orchid book enthusiast - times are very good. There are presently three absolutely outstanding slipper orchid books in press: "The Genus Paphiopedilum" by Braem, Baker & Baker, "The Slipper Orchids" by Catherine Cash, and "Slipper Orchids of Vietnam" by Leonid Averyanov, Phillip Cribb, Phan Ke Loc & Nguyen Tien Hiep. Each book sets the highest standard of excellence. We slipper orchid hobbyists are truly blessed to have such talented and passionate writers on this subject. I reference each of these books several times each month. They are great additions to my orchid library.

There is total concensus over 2/3rds of the species in all of the books. But there are major disagreements over much of the rest. Discussions in the text are filled with little daggers about what the other book authors had missed or misinterpreted - it is facinating! Since Slipper Orchids of Vietnam was written after the other two books, Averyanov & Cribb have the last word in the arguement. But I suspect that new books from Braem and Cash are already in the making.

It's a great time to be a slipper orchid enthusiast. You gotta buy this book!

I know the author--he let me read the manuscript and galley. I couldn't believe how good the story was! I sat down one night and read it from beginning to end and I had shivers running down my spine. Most of the actual story is set in a confessional and told in retrospect. The plot development was solid and the way the characters developed gave me chills. This is a twisting story about love lost and the main character's (Alec) inability to let go. In the process, he stumbles onto a way of travelling through time and tries to bury his loss by remaking his life from a certain point on. I'm not going to give any more away but I really loved this book and I can't wait until he publishes the second book in the series.
