The Bible for All Antique Christmas Ornament Lovers!

Review Date: 2003-11-25
The late Phillip Snyder wrote this definitive book on the history of the Christmas tree and antique Christmas ornaments. Phil featured wonderful color photos of rare pieces from his own vast collection, and his book has a very readable and well-written text to accompany them. THE CHRISTMAS TREE BOOK motivated untold hundreds, perhaps thousands of collectors world-wide, to start digging through antique shops and Grandma's attic for those beautiful, gossamer-thin blown glass German ornaments from Victorian days. And it introduced readers to the scarce "Dresden" Christmas ornaments, so rare before this book that most antique dealers never recognized them! Made of pressed cardboard in two halves, they were taken home and painstakingly glued and assembled into animals, carriages and an endless variety of detailed shapes by cottage workers in Dresden, Germany in the 1870-1920 period. Readers are forewarned that Mr. Snyder's book will either bring a nostalgic longing for your own childhood Christmases, or send you scurring to YOUR Grandmother's attic looking for her beautiful, rare Holiday decorations of yesteryear.

I had the pleasure of knowing Phil Snyder and collecting with him for a number of years; all early Christmas ornament buffs are a lot sadder for his early passing. We are certainly thankful for and well-rewarded by this legacy of his scholarly book. In additon, I would personally recommend you read Phil Snyder's second book on early Christmas, DECEMBER 25, also still available through your Amazon network of dealers. The photo he used on the back cover of a feather tree full of Dresdens was my tree!

I could not believe that a whole book of practice exams existed. It truly helped me get a 5 on the AP test. Some of the tests were extremely hard, but the others were basically the same level as the real test. Studying Barron's AP review and this practice exam book will guarantee not just a passing score, but a 4 or 5.

These Practice Exams will really get you ready. My son got college credit for both semesters of Biology. As a Zoology major myself, I was impressed with the brevity yet thoroughness of these exams. They really helped him get ready.

Companion to Clinical Neurology (Medicine)

Bill Pryse-Phillips' masterwork is an absolute treasure for anyone interested in the clinical neurosciences and a must for every personal medical library.
Most anything relative to the clinical neurosciences is referenced and defined making the search for obscure clinical signs or eponyms a cinch.
Great reading, cleverly composed and incredibly useful.

I'm a medical student going into residency in neurology. I have used, and will continue to use this book as a reference every day. The text is alphabetized, so lightning quick, and thorough. You should really try to check this book out...perhaps at a medical school library.

This is a beautifully illustrated, interesting book. Most rulers receive a 1-2 page treatment (although later monarchs have more pages dedicated to them) complete with ancestral charts, timelines, and other helpful additions to the main text. I'm sure this is meant as a coffee table or reference book, but I sat down, read it cover to cover, and then bothered my family and friends with all the facts I'd learned for the next month. A great book.

An Irish Cleric Fighting for Dixie

Review Date: 2000-10-29
The Confederacy's Fighting Chaplain, Father John B. Bannon by Phillip Thomas Tucker, is an excellent biography and Civil War History. The book gives the background of Father Bannon, beginning with his education in Ireland and his service in St. Louis. The conflicts which were tearing St. Louis, as well as the nation, apart are well reflected in the life of Bannon as he was making his decision as to how to respond to the gathering storm. Not limiting his narrative to a mere recitation of facts, Tucker acquaints the reader with the factors working on, and the thoughts going on within Bannon's mind which led him to his conclusion that the Confederacy represented the cause of freedom and Christian civilization in America. The chapters covering Bannon's service as chaplain for the First Missouri Confederate Brigade skillfully blend the details of the chaplain's life with the greater history of the War in general. The final section of the book relates Bannon's unique service as a diplomatic agent on behalf of the Confederacy and his role as personal emissary from President Davis to Pope Pius IX. Davis had asked Bannon to undertake a mission to Ireland to attempt to dissuade Irish from enlisting in the Union Army. It was Bannon's initiative to undertake the overture which almost resulted in recognition of the Confederacy by the Vatican. The unique intertwining of Bannon's roles as chaplain and diplomat within the larger story in which he played a part, make this a very worthwhile addition to the Civil War literature

Excellent overview of neglected problem
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-30
This book has tons of statistics gathered in one place on the impacts of sprawl on older communities, and how shifts in development (including mushrooming house sizes) have put older suburbs and their smaller homes at a disadvantage. This is the best book on outlining the problems faced by older suburbs and why decline is happening. Perhaps the most intriguing finding is that communities with older homes don't necessarily decline, but that homes built between 1940 and 1970 are most vulnerable. Home renovation expenditures are not keeping pace with the rate at which homes depreciate and need major systems replacements. Urbanists should be paying more attention to these neighborhoods, which are often neither the stereotypical exclusionary privileged suburbs, nor are they usually filled with the poorest of the poor (though they may have concentrations of poverty). They face perhaps a more challenging road to recovery than more urban neighborhoods closer to various city amenities-- unless their decline can be addressed sooner rather than later. Current public policies are not structured to tackle these communities, and jurisdictions may be in denial or challenged by a limited tax base and sentiment against raising taxes.

great work

Some think of sprawl as a simple zero sum game: suburbs win, cities lose. But this book explains (with quantitative analysis from numerous regions) that sprawl, like the French Revolution, devours its own children: that older suburbs decline as newer suburbs suck away their elites. That fact is of course common knowledge in the Rust Belt. But Lucy and Phillips add another level of detail, explaining how some places have survived the rising tide of sprawl while others go into meltdown. Suburbs (and city neighborhoods) with historic housing and pedestrian-friendly features have often managed to keep up with the rest of their metro areas, while typical 1950s suburbs are the biggest losers from sprawl because they are stuck with the worst of both worlds: their housing is too small for 21st century tastes, yet they lack the urban amenities that lead to gentrification.

Guide to administering construction contracts
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-01-26
This book was written as a useful guide and reference to help Owner and Contractor personnel, students, and others associated with privately awarded construction contracts to achieve the often elusive goal of completing their contracts successfully (safely, on time, within the budget, meeting design limits, and with no unresolved claims).

The author has worked with Owners and Contractors over the past 50 years in offshore and domestic mining, process, refinery, smelter, petro-chemical, and environmental improvement, reclamation, and remediation facilities in the fields of engineering, operations, maintenance, design, estimating, construction, startup and shakedown, and claims resolution.

Contents are presented in three parts. Part one addresses the identification, selection, production, and assembly of the many elements required to produce bid packages, qualify and select bidders, and award construction contracts. Part two reviews the requirements for a reasonable, fair, practical, logical, and orderly contract administration system based on the sample bid package included in appendix B. Part three presents four case studies of construction project contracts that have difficulties; hopefully readers may use them to recognize and correct potential problem areas in their own contracts before they become claims. Some of the latest advances in information technology that can be used for construction contract management applications are also identified and discussed in part three.

Appendix A, Checklist for Processing from Start to Start-up, by Lester F. Engle, and first published in Mining Engineering magazine in May of 1966, presents an excellent checklist of items that must be considered or accomplished when preparing, writing, and awarding, contracts right through the construction, acceptance, and start-up phases.

Construction Contract Administration Review

Review Date: 2000-01-28
This book will function as an excellent cookbook on industrial construction contract administration. Contract language, field notices, change orders, scheduling, etc. are all covered in great detail with easy to follow fill in the blanks forms. This book is a "must have" for plant managers, plant purchasing agents, plant engineers, and construction company managers and supervisors. It is focused on the latest non-computer based communication systems and will work well in most industrial construction settings.

While not directly geared to commercial, and highway and heavy construction, it has lessons presented that will clearly apply to these other construction situations. This book is well-worth the price.

Like all the books from the Kings, "Contract Killers" is brilliant stuff. British humor at its best. I think this one it's my favorite of all their books. Drop-dead funny, and stuffed with kinds of delicious things. They're presented in a low key throw-away style -- read it carefully or you'll miss them. I won't give any examples here; do yourself a favor and read it for yourself.

Like Mollo, but better. This is one of the four very fine books from the Kings, who write extremely good satire of other authors. I highly recommend all of their books, especially their first, The Kings' Tales.

Being an articulate person, yet not an interior decorator, I found this book most useful. After buying a new home, a budget to fix it was minimal. Yet, I faux painted walls and used furniture in techniques that I would never have believed. The author is very good in verbalizing how to paint with a flair of Rembrandt (and clear photos of each technique). When I applied each technique I truly felt accomlpished. I am not a salesman ,but it true, this book worked for what I was looking for - some artistic assistance!

One of the best books for the do-it-yourself decorator.

This book has it all. The text and photos are clearly presented. The book begins with the proper prepartion steps in decorating a variety of surfaces from furniture, accessories to interiors surfaces- walls, floors, ceilings. If you ever consider painting or decorating your walls, floors or furniture- this is the book for you. Techniques are broken down into easy, intermediate to advanced-- so you can grow with the book. Paint and faux finish techniques from A to Z are covered... sponging, ragging, glazing, marbleizing, woodgraining, gilding, stenciling, tortoiseshell, malachite, trompe l'oeil and more. After reading this book, you can wait to get some brushes wet with paint and transform your home
