Inspiring, I give it two thumbs up for offering a sane point of view about minimizing bully and violence in schools, while staying sensitive to the young people at the same time.

I also went to the Safe School Ambassador website and saw a 4-minute NBC Today Show clip about this program. The clip gives a good summary of the authors' point of view, and you also get to hear some unscripted responses from young people who have been through the program.

Every school administrator should take the time to read this valuable, well-researched guide to the problem and solutions to the issue of mistreatment in schools. The authors have made a strong case for student empowerment, and have given school personnel the practical tools to make their schools safer and more welcoming for everyone.

Changing the Norms

The most important aspect of this book is that the strategies suggested PREVENT mistreatment, thus changing the norms. As a facilitator of adults ordered by court to take anger management classes, I would like to see more of this taking place. That way we are up stream solving the problem rather than downstream picking up the bodies. I have shared much of the information in the book in parenting classes I led. Students found the information extremely useful. To my knowledge several of them did go back to their children's schools and obtained information on how the school was addressing bullying. It's the ripple effect. Take the time to read the book and then make a difference in your community. I'd love to work myself out of a job.

As the parent of a girl who was a mistreated in middle school, I have often wondered what can be done to bring about change for students like my daughter. I know from my own experience, that top down discipline does not provide for a safe school climate. If it did, my many calls to the school about how my daughter was being treated, would have brought about change.
What I have learned from this insightful, compelling book is that by empowering the students, we can build safer schools, from the inside-out, an obvious, and simple solution. Research based and well written, Safe School Ambassadors:Harnessing Student Power, is a must read for Professionals and Parents alike.

An Outstanding and Important Work

I have worked with young people for over 30 years as a theatre educator and drama therapist. The problem of schools being unsafe and uncivil places in which to learn is growing around the globe. In addition to providing a clear overview of the problem, I believe the authors express quite eloquently the key to the solution: youth empowerment. It is through relationship that young people develop their behavioral repertoire and, as is expressed in this book, "Outside-In" approaches that focus on rules, monitoring, and enforcement cannot effectively change the social norms that make it O.K. for students to mistreat each other. Kudos to the authors on creating such a valuable resource.

Mr. Johnston's boook is a fun, fast read which provides an immense amount of helpful advice. It not only provides critical guidance and useful information, but also dishes out a healthy does of encouragement for the aspiring entrepreneur.

I highly recommend this book to ambitious college seniors, MBA students, and middle managers that have become disillusioned with the bureacracy of the Fortune 500.

Phil Johnston has done it again! Nothing surpasses the wisdom and wit of his latest writings. Just when you think he is covering a familiar business topic, he sidesteps into subjects that seemingly come from another orbit! Yet it all ties together in the long run and you feel enlightened at the conclusion. For both the new student of business, and for the soon-to-retire executive, Phil Johnston provides enlightenment and some good old-fashiong horse sense -- sense that even Bucephalus could have learned from in guiding his master.

Leading With Humor

Book Review: Success In Small Business Is a Laughing Matter

The unique characteristic throughout Phil Johnston's Success In Small Business Is A Laughing Matter is that the seriousness of the content is written with a humorous, easy-to-read style illustrated with bizarre "doodles". His book on establishing and successfully managing any small business transcends the usual dry, business as usual, consultant-oriented, how-to manuals. Phil blends common sense strategies with actual examples from his own lucrative career to illustrate effective decision-making.
Another distinguishing aspect of Phil's writing is his emphasis on the principles of character-driven leadership revealing the difference between managing things and leading (motivating) people to find both purpose and meaning in their work. In this regard, Phil's book has useful value for those of us in careers other than business and commerce.
As a retired naval officer and school principal, I found many passages which affirmed many of the leadership behaviors which will also guarantee successful results in both military and education organizations. Regardless of working environment, Phil is adamant that a true leader must have the character and the courage to persevere despite sometime impossible odds or bureaucratic inertia.
All readers will come away with the knowledge that success in
any worthwhile endeavor is based on a positive set of values, an optimistic attitude, a sincere belief in the intrinsic worth of human beings, tenacity with open-mindedness, and understanding the tenets of authentic leadership. The most important of these is leading by personal example in a continuous, consistent manner so as to establish trust, integrity, and credibility among both colleagues and clients regardless of changing situational variables. This constancy of solid character based on strong faith, experience, and a positive set of core values sums up the essence of successful leadership with a sense of humor. Phil reminds us to always take your work and professionalism seriously, but not yourself, remembering that leadership is character in action in service to others.

This book is written by an expert in starting, growing and selling small businesses. Phil Johnston gives helpful advice wrapped in a number of personal anecodotes and practical experiences, with a lot of humor tossed in to make his points. This book is written for the small business owner, particularly one who needs some direction and encouragement starting out or already in business but having difficulty making headway. If you read page 48 and 49, you will certainly see why the author has the credentials to write this book...and why you can't take your current success or failure too seriously but simply press on.

"Phil Johnston's book, SUCCESS IN SMALL BUSINESS IS A LAUGHING MATTER, provides a valuable resource for every pastor, counselor, and religious leader to better understand the mind and challenges facing business leaders today.

His great wealth of knowledge, experience, and uncommon skill with words provide the reader with ways and means of inspiring, leading, and serving today's business community in America.

I believe that my fellow servant leaders will find this book to be invaluable as they glean new information about the world in which their business leaders operate every single day.

This book is heart-breaking. It is an account of incredible suffering and horrific abuse perpetrated against the children of the Albert family. This book is a story of extraordinary courage and endurance in face of astonishingly difficult odds.

The story of the Albert family should be read everywhere. Furthermore, it should be required reading for Catholic bishops and clergy throughout the world. I hope this book gets picked up and read.

I too am a survivor of child sexual abuse and clergy abuse. I am also a Catholic priest. I know well the horrendous legacy of abuse - the crippling trauma from which healing can be so difficult.

The institution of the Catholic Church is - in so many ways - sinful, sick and dysfunctional. The Church needs repentance, conversion, purification and healing.

The terrified voices of abused children over so many years cry out to God in Heaven on account of the evil perpetrated within the Church. God's Church should have been a place of compassion, love and care for those children in society who were most vulnerable - most in need of gentleness, love and nurturing. Far too many, like the Albert children, experienced just the opposite.

Thankfully, however, more and more of those children who suffered, as a result of the evil and criminal behaviour of perverts and sadists in religious garb, are no longer frightened voices. They are becoming strong and demanding voices - demanding truth, justice and redress.

The adults the Albert children have now become deserve profound awe and immense respect. I hope they find peace, gentleness and healing after all the horror they endured when they were children. May God bless them - the True God of Love.

May that monstrous and false god - the fearsome construct of those who abuse their power and position over the defenceless and the vulnerable - be forever de-throned.

Those predators who happened to be priests and religious - along with their conspiring and conniving superiors and bishops - have actually abused and betrayed Christ Himself in the persons of His little ones.

Jesus is very explicit in what He thinks of those who have scandalised "any of these my little ones". (Matthew Ch. 18:5-6 and verses 10-11). How could so many cardinals, archbishops, bishops, priests and religious have behaved so scandalously in the face of innocent suffering?

How could they have so negated the essential message of the Gospel - both clerical abusers and those in positions of authority who sought to cover up their crimes - by they way they behaved towards the victims?

May God forgive them! May God have mercy on their immortal souls, for one day they will all stand before the Judegement Seat of Jesus Christ. And their attorneys will be of no use to them!

Scandals That Have Rocked The Catholic Church

For the past several years there have been several books written about the scandals that have rocked the Catholic Church.

Unto Us A Child is another one of these horrendous stories only this time with a different twist.

New York Times best selling author Donald R. Phillips relates in Unto Us A Child how an entire family of seven children were placed into an orphanage and subjected to unbelievable acts of cruelty at the hands of some of the nuns and priests who were the administrators of this orphanage.

More particularly, it is the story of the Albert children from Kansas, who, when they were very young, were placed under the care of a Catholic run institution because their parents were too poor to feed them or care for them.
While living in the orphanage they were constantly subjected to vicious behaviour on the part of their caretakers.

How can you rationalize the molestation of the Albert boys by an alcoholic priest...?

Where is justice where another priest had a continuous ... relationship with one of the under-aged Albert sisters eventually leading to her impregnation and probably the cause of her suicide years later?

This same priest today is no longer a member of the clergy; however, he is presently living in a Catholic retirement community, and was never brought before the courts for the crime of [being] with a minor.

Ironically, it was this same priest, who with the alcoholic ..., made sure that the scandal was all hushed up and that the child born out of wedlock was put up for adoption.

Phillips was apprised of this inconceivable and painful story when one of the grandchildren of the Albert family, who worked for him, related this tragedy and asked him if he wanted to write about it.

After careful investigating the various facts and interviewing the Albert brothers (two of the sisters were already deceased), Phillips decided to pursue the matter and "tell all."

There will probably be howls of anger after readers have the opportunity to ponder over the gravity of the crimes committed.

The damning evidence meticulously exposed in the book uncovers lies ... and injustice that underline the enormity of the problem that has beset the Catholic Church in recent years.

No doubt, many readers will shake their heads and ask themselves, how could members of the clergy break the sacred rule "do unto others as you would have others do unto you."

A Very Sad Story

I agree completely with the review from New York.

This book was not an easy read. It is very disturbing. I have read (and heard on TV) many stories about abuse in the Catholic church, but never one that includes so many members of one family. Of course, the Catholic church felt there was no truth to these stories (and the priest who determined this is now the Bishop in Dodge City, Kansas). I am not sure how he could come to this conclusion since there was a baby that was born after one priest sexually abused one of the daughters from the age of thirteen (Eventually the priest was defrocked after another paternity issue arose).

The Catholic church must address these issues. They WILL NOT go away. The victims deserve justice.

I can see this book being made into a movie. It is truly the most disturbing story I have yet to hear involving abuse in the Catholic church.

One Family's Story

Unto Us A Child chronicles the lives of one family as impacted by the Catholic Church. Their experiences of sexual abuse caused devastating problems, coupled with the refusal of their diocese to admit the truth behind the Albert family's allegations. Unfortunately, this pattern of denial by the Church has happened countless times throughout the U.S. This story will open many eyes and touch many hearts. Sexual abuse thrives in secrecy. Placing a spotlight on this issue will help society as a whole, because the more educated people are about the long-term effects of sexual abuse, the more involved they will be in finding ways to prevent it. Our son committed suicide several years ago, a few months after revealing that he had been sexually abused by a priest when he was twelve. Families who are telling their stories are enabling other families to protect their children. Each person can strengthen the fight against sexual abuse by giving emotional support to the victims and by insisting on legislation requiring churches to report child sexual abuse. The Albert family is to be commended in their relentless pursuit of truth and justice.

This is such a sad story, but one that needs to be read. To think that the Catholic church is so callous is heart-breaking, but we have read enough of these types of stories recently to know that it is true. The hierarchy within the church are not only callous but are self-righteous and even hateful, in my view. This family suffered so terribly and unnecessarily, each and every one from the parents down to the 9 children and beyond, that it is a heartache.
This book is so well researched and written, it certainly deserves a higher priority in the bookstores! I just happened to come across it on a table of "new books" in my local bookstore; I am saddened that it won't be widely read, because it needs to be. We cannot continue to blindly trust huge establishments, such as the Catholic (or any) Church; and we must fight injustice all the way, as this family did. Unfortunately, outdated laws are preventing the remaining family members from any sort of justice, let alone compensation, but maybe laws will be changed down the line and these people will find the courage and strength (not to mention money and time) to continue their battle. I am ashamed of the Church. I have come to despise it. Please read this book and see what they have done to our children and to it's members who have taken a wrong step when they were minors......

Since then, I was drawn to buy the rest of the Series and so far, I'm the proud owner of seven other books from the series. (France, China, Thailand, Mediterrenean, Italy, Mexico and America Of course)I've tried lots of recipies and they all tourn out to be marvelous delights to a very picky palate. Congratulations on this coulinary home run. My only regret is that I'm limited to family and friends to buy the books, because I haven't been able to find a bookstore here in Colombia that sells the book. So I'm courious to Know if there is some alternate way to adquire them that doesn't imply traveling to the states?

If you enjoy tasting the finest of foods that have been all time traditional favorites and you want to know how to prepare them yourself, this cookbook is for you. This book opens up the doors of cooking and makes you an instant expert. Contains the best chili and fried chicken you can imagine. I create 11 to 13 different pies every holiday and the pies comes from recipes right here. People think I am the best cook around, I wouldn't be without this book. The soups will imspire you to not only learn how to create these soups but come up with inventions of your own. Seriously, this book is a must have for someone that really wants to learn how to cook and needs a great recipe that will inspire them to continue. I have a whole library of cookbooks but this is my favorite one and the one that gave me the encouragement to make cooking my hobby. The chicken frickase is the all time best chicken recipe in the world. Make that and mashed potatoes and corn and you will have any man coming back for more.

Bill Phillips has come out with an informative book that tells you practically everything there is to know about the use and abuse of steroids. He tells you how the body reacts to steroids, is accurate in his drug profiles and discusses possible side effects. The only thing that i dislike about the book is the amounts of steroids in the cycles he describes. I've fooled with steroids for years and although I don't have a 280 lbs physique it's still pretty good. I never in my steroid days had to take the amount of drugs described in this book. I was 235 lbs at my heaviest with 7% bodyfat and neither I or my friends used drugs of that magnitude. I do however recommend it to personal trainers and all coaches and last but not least to those thinking about using any ergogenic drugs. I rate it a 9 out of a possible 10.

This review is for the 1977-1978 editions.

This book is a direct translation into English of all of the Middle Kingdom Coffin Texts. These are the religious writings placed in tombs to aid the dead's entry and existence in the afterlife, although a small number contain mythical stories. For a serious student of Egyptology this is an essential resource. Faulkner is conscientious, providing notes to explain corrupted, doubtful, and untranslatable text.

One thing must be kept in mind: this book is not intended for beginners. There is no commentary for the spells, and little explanation for the many names, allusions, and references, which would have made this work very much longer. If you do not have a broad knowledge of Egyptian mythology, most of this material will be confusing.

Other than a commentary, the only feature which would make this book more complete would be a copy of the main diagram from the Book of Two Ways.

There are not words to praise late Dr. Faulkner for the impressive task he had undetook at translating the 7 volumes of the "editio princeps" of the valuable Ancient Egyptian Coffin Texts, like he had already done with the Pyramid Texts in 1969. Anybody interested in ancient Egyptian religion and funerary literature must own a copy of this edition, whether under this "omnibus edition, 3 vols. in 1", or the extended edition in 3 vols. MOreover, a new reprint of the same is badly in need for it is very difficulto to find it at hand. So that you known: if you have the chance, and you are looking for an authoritative, researched and scholarly translation: THIS IS THE TITLE YOU MUST OWN1

This is an essential book by Faulkner, and very convenient by combining three separate volumes into one in this edition. I've finished the Pyramid Texts, Book of the Dead, and the Mythical Origin of the Egyptian Temple by E.A.E. Reymond, which is a cosmogonical overview of the Edfu temple inscriptions. This much more follows the form of the Pyramid Text writing style, and fills in many gaps about their religion. Any Egyptologist would benefit from the read, which will take a while.

This is a fun and informative book. I bought it for a class on the American Presidency that I will be teaching next year, but my family has been enjoying it now. I put a trivia question up on the whiteboard in our kitchen each day, and we enjoy great discussion about possible answers.

Who knows, if any of us appear on a TV quiz show, it might save the day to know that Richard Nixon ate cottage cheese with catsup, or that Harry Truman considered himself a sissy when he was a child!

It's an extremely interesting and informative book!

This book gives little stories and great knowledge about the presidents. It is really easy to read, but fun. I mean, who really knows that Andrew Jackson married his wife TWICE, and that Thomas Jefferson taught his birds to feed him!!! For anyone who wants to know the little things about who our Commanders in Chief really were, this is a must. Hope you enjoy it! Oh, and be sure to tell your friends just which president had his horses' teeth brushed daily!!

The Louis Phillips book "Ask Me Anyhthing about the Presidents"is a truckload of information about The Presidents. This book talks about Presidents George Washington through Bill Clinton. This book says where The Presidents were born, when they were born, their mother's name, their father's name, when they got married, who they married, when they died, and a sidelight-an interesting fact about each President. There are also pictures of all The Presidents. When You're not reading about one President,You're reading trivia questions about The Presidents&getting answers.Even though the best President book on the market is the Wyatt Blassinggame book "The-Look-It-Up-Book Of Presidents","Ask Me Anything about the Presidents"is the second best.Highly Recommended!

The book is wonderful. Very informative, up-to-date and easy to use. Beautiful illustrations. This really is a MUST HAVE for all collectors of Longaberger baskets. Especially handy to use while bidding for Longabergers on ebay.

I would highly recommend this book. I wish someone had told me about it when I first started bidding on ebay.

This is the book to use to evaluate your Longaberger collection or to help evaluate a basket before you buy. A must for any collector that trades on the secondary market! The book is divided into sections by basket type and includes an index for quick referencing. Take it along to the next basket auction you attend!

I am a Longaberger consultant and have every Bentley's Guide ever published, including an autographed first copy. It is a great help in promoting the value of our products (the fact that they appreciate, not depreciate)! It has been of great help in increasing insurance coverage, not only for myself, but also for customers. I had one customer who lost items in a fire; we used the guide for the replacement value for the insurance company. I now have customers who purchase their own Guide.

Ordered this last week to preview for next year's Faith Formation classes. After I got the book, I quickly emailed all of my student's parents to suggest they purchase the book for summertime reading. The book is wonderful for many reason: information is correct and the finding Jesus and other items is very fun for children!

My kids really enjoyed these books! Highly would recommend. Especially if your children enjoy Where's Waldo books. A nice way to bring God into their lives while having fun!

Great family activity book that offers new discovery and opportunities for discussion with every reading. Thoughtfully researched and written with beautiful illustrations. This is one of the treasures that your child will save to share with their own children.

I bought this for my daughter's 3rd birthday and we all love it. It is like an "I Spy" book, with biblical themes. At the beginning they show 10 items that will show up in each scene (e.g. a cross, a dove, angels, etc.). Then with each scene there are specific things to look for, with explanations in simple language. In the back are parent pages with suggestions for supplemental activities, such as reading a specific passage of Scripture, etc. This is a book that we will turn to many times, and we can do different things with it each time, and as she grows. We will get the other books in this series.
