Peter Cameron writes beautifully, and his characterisation is superb, astonishingly vivid for this promiscuous genre. Do yourself a favour and buy this collection.

Peter Cameron is a superb novelist. If you want proof, read "The Weekend" or his fantasia on love life in New York City called "Leap Year." The short stories collected in "The Half You Don't Know" are the first stories of his that I've read. And now I plan to buy his other two collections. What a wonderful writer. His characters are so full and rich, even when Cameron tells you very little about them. He is especially good with young people like the boy in 'Homework' whose dog, Keds, "got smashed by some kid pushing a shopping cart;" or Julie in 'Fear of Math' who begins a casual affair with her summer school calculus professor in order to pass the course; or Mark in 'What Do People Do All Day' who brags that his monogram is MTV, or Patrick in 'Fast Forward' who agrees to accompany his friend, Alison, to Maine where Patrick will pretend to be her fiance, so that, supposedly, Alison's mother can die happily.

Comparisons are odious, but I have not found so much delight in discovering a writer since I first read the stories and novels of David Leavitt. Cameron and Leavitt are not at all alike in their writing styles but they both do have such a warm, loving compassion for all of their characters, especially the ones who do not know how to solve their problems, but nevertheless, keep trying to find a way out.

I especially treasure a story called 'Slowly' in which a young widow and her late groom's brother try to move on with their lives, to comfort one another and to complete the grieving process.

Cameron always leaves the 'half you don't know' as a mystery. He refuses to fill in all the blanks with his characters. They are our relatives and friends. They are us. We laugh with them and when they are in trouble, as they often are, we empathize greatly with them. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Essential Short Story Writer!!

By far, Peter Cameron is indeed one of the very few talented short story writers in America today. The stories in this volume are written with craft and skill that are quite rare to find nowadays. With regards to gay writing, Cameron is quite distinct as he deals with homosexuality in the most tactfull yet intelligent manner. He doesn't raise eye-brows when he introduces a gay character or a gay plot. It is just natural for him. Excellent!

Although I prefer Peter Cameron's novels (Leap Year, The Weekend, Andorra, The City of Your Final Destination), he first made a name for himself in the mid-1980s with wistful short stories. All but two of the stories in this collection were in his first collection (One Way or Another). The additional stories focus on gay characters with a background of AIDS death and were first published in the_ Yale Review_. "Deparing" is the mbryo of his novel _The Weekend_ and one of three stories in the collection ("Homework" and "Excerpt from Swan Lake" are the other two) that were selected for O. Henry Awards.

Seven of the seventeen stories were first published in the _New Yorker_. Somewhat offbeat children and young adults of both sex experience the oddness of adults and the complicated relations among the adults they observe who are dying or have survived divorce, or are thinking about getting married. Not much happens and (as with many contemporary literary stories) the stories tend tostop rather than be wrapped up. Life and its uncertainties will go on for the somewhat perplexed, somewhat perplexing and never-fulfilled characters.

Almost every story has an observation or dialogue that makes me laugh out loud. My favorites are two stories about young New Yorkers visiting relatives in Maine with a possible marriage partner ("Fast Forward" and "Nuptials and Heathens," the latter with the best absurd line in the book) and one about a young woman who has to pass calculus to begin Columbia MBA program in the fall ("Fear of Math"), though I was not sorry to have read any of the fourteen stories.

Some of Cameron's Finest Stories

The collection includes some of Cameron's finest short stories: "The Secret Dog," "Slowly," "Jump or Dive," and others. The collection also includes the short story he eventually turned into the novel "The Weekend."

Cameron has an eye for details, dialogue and simple and original descriptions that make you say, yeah, that's exactly how it is, how come I never thought of it that way before?

I did find, however, that the stories are best read during separate sittings. Otherwise, the similarity in tone and characterizations begins to wear a little bit thin; and the sweet, poignant, almost hapless characters start to seem kind of passive-aggressive.

My girlfriend at College used to have a big crush on Cameron back when he was wowing the campus with his poetry in the school literary magazine. I was jealous of him then. Now I'm just jealous of his ability to write such great short stories.

I am a beginning fly-tier and this book was of great use. The explanations are easy to understand, the pictures are of high qaulity and easy to follow, and with it being spiral bound it will stay open so you can follow it with ease. I highly recommend this book for anybody who wants to learn how to tie flies.

This is a particularly good book for beginners. I've had mine for a while and refer to it often. Mr. Gathercole breaks the book up in chapters on how to tie the various parts of the fly, body, tails, hackle etc. which I think makes it easier for the beginner to learn rather than simply showing the steps to tying a number of different patterns. This book is the best I've seen for getting started. It shows you how to tie as opposed to just recipies for known patterns.

A must for beginners serious about fly fishing

The combination of Peter's astounding color photography and easy-to-follow lessons has lead to a beginners fly tying book that not only teaches, but inspires further study. Lessons are uniquely organized to lead the student through all necessary aspects of the art while providing a sound basis for some of the most important insect imitations still proving their usefulness today. As the student learns more about the art and applies the teachings of others, he/she will return to Peter's book time and time again for basic understanding and interpretation.

I was an avid fly tier and fisherman over 5 years ago. Recently, I decided to start up again, and spent quite a bit of time looking for a fly tying book I could use to remind me of the basics. I found Peter Gathercole's book to be, far and away, the best. It isn't a book full of recipies, it's a book full of techniques. Some of the techniques he presents are new and unusual, most are traditional. Great photography and clear language lead you through the methods step by step. I am very impressed with this book, and would suggest it to anyone from a complete novice to a more experienced tier. If you already have some experience under your belt, he will give you the little tips that clean up your flies, give them that little extra bugginess or movement, and especially be more durable and longer-lasting. An excellent book.

This book's aim is interesting because physical disorders in psychiatric settings is hard to manage for a psychiatrist trained mainly in a self-standing psychiatric hospital.

Readers can take a general view of that field, or physical disorders in psychiatric settings.

The contents is well-organized, easy to read style even for Japanese learners. I spent 6 months to finish raading it at free moments during my work. Average Japanese doctors may be able to finish reading it even for a shorter period of time.

As a psychiatric intern, this book helps me a great deal as I care for patients with comorbid psychiatric and medical conditions. Organized by signs and symptoms, the handbook makes it easier to quickly develop a differential diagnosis, work up the patient, and provide the appropriate treatment. In addition to the handbook's clear and concise text, its numerous flowcharts are particularly helpful.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who provides care to patients with psychiatric illnesses.

As a first year Psychiatry resident I have found this manual very helpful as a first source when managing patients that also have medical problems. The book consistantly addresses each medical problem in the context of a comorbid psychiatric condition, so that information that is usually glossed over or even excluded in most medical or online texts is easily available and accessible in a single, well organized, concise manual. When any of my patients have a medical issue, I can grab this book and in 5 minutes review psychiatric conditions and medications that may be relevent to the diagnosis and treatment of the problem as well as have an easy to follow algorithm to help with decisions such as sending to the patient to the ER vs following up as an outpatient. I highly recommend this book for other psychiatry residents or anyone who frequently sees patients with comorbid psychiatric conditions.

I read this book when I was in grade school. I am now a mother of four children, the oldest is 9 and the youngest is 9 months. I have been looking for this book for a couple of years off and on so I could read it to my children. I loved reading this book as a child and want to share that experience with my children. I know they will love this story as well, and it will give me a chance to spend some good quality time with them as they learn to love to read. This book started my interest in mystery solving novels. It was very popular in my school and on high demand. I checked out of my school library several times to re-read it when I could. I LOVED IT!!

Excellent book for a parent's child who may be faced with moving to another town or state. The children in the book were hesitant at first about moving to a potential haunted house, but they looked for positive ways to cope with the situation. In one instance, with their father's permission, they thought about building a tree-house out of old wood from the barn. The children in the book also found and picked up clues along the storyline that was originally set up by their father via the children's former next door friends. This makes the story interesting with many thoughts about ghosts because they did not know who or what were writing the clues until the very end of the story.

This was the book that initiated my love for reading.

This was the book that initiated my love for reading. As a fourth grader, I was drawn to the title as well as to its apparent 'novel-like' format relative to the slimmer picture books that were on the lower grade shelves in the school library. For the first time, I found myself being pulled into a storyline, so absorbed by the mystery that unfolds that I couldn't put the book down. (I think that it took me two or three days to finish as a nine-year-old, and I found myself re-reading it until I could recite dialogue: "Home," shouted Jed. "Milk and Cookies," shouted Bill. Liza ran to the front door....) I also remember being impressed by how well the family got along, including the three sibling protagonists.

I highly recommend this book as a starter 'novel' for young children who are prone to becoming avid readers. Follow-up with the more complex Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew mysteries, the Chronicles of Narnia, Robertson's "Henry Reed" series, and M. L'Engles "Time Quartet" (A Wrinkle in Time.)

A beautiful, well written, poignant story about a boy who wants to fly and does not understand why he can't. So, understanding birds the way he does, he wants to fly like a hawk. He decides to sneak off to Santos Mountain and steal a young Red Tail Hawk from of its nest. The boy, Rudy Soto, desires to be the hawk's brother so they can learn to fly together. But he finally realizes at the end of summer after all the other young hawks have learned to fly that the bird is unhappy living in a cage with a string tied around its leg. He realizes the bird will not give up and longs for freedom. The hawk wants to fly. That's all he's ever wanted, just like Rudy.

I won't give away the ending. You'll just have to read it with your children and share with them what this remarkable story has to offer.

Byrd Baylor's books are not just for children. Grownups enjoy them too. They are simple stories about desert life that offer great insight about living and what is truly important way beyond material possessions. This book is about sky and wind and freedom and the beauty that is unique to the desert.

I loved it!

My husband and I purchased this book because we are always searching for good books to read to our nine grandchildren..they have loved the Byrd Baylor books. "Hawk, I am Your Brother" is education and sensitive to being quiet and watching to learn. It is an easy read for all ages of our grandchildren, ages 18 years old to 9 years old. No matter the age they loved being read to, especially by Grandpa. They already watch TV that does nothing for their imagination or originality. We have found the local bookstores thin on Baylor books. :(

Caldecott for line drawings; text for imagination

Review Date: 2005-03-03
My five-year-old son loves to think about flying with hawks and loves to think about having a hawk for a brother. He gets upset with Rudy Soto (the main character of this book) for taking a hawk chick from its nest, but enjoys the end when he sets him free and the hawk and the boy "talk" back and forth to each other. Like Rudy, my son thinks maybe there are some people out there who really do know how to fly...

The Caldecott-winning drawings are simple line drawings that evoke the idea of flight (or being grounded on occassion). The text accents the drawings--

It is
broken
into
many
short
lines,
which
draw the
eye up to
the top of
the pages.

It becomes a single free-verse poem of flight. The combination of the story, the exact words chosen, and the pictures have let to many discussions with my son already and he has only had this book for a couple of weeks. Highly recommended!

Nice gift for kids of all ages, especially those who love nature and animals.

Review Date: 2001-12-24
HAWK I'M YOUR BROTHER is a touching story of how a child learns that there are some things in life which cannot be achieved by enslaving that which holds the knowledge you seek but rather to understand the secret of this special freedom is how you will treat and respect the needs of the wild creature who holds the answers to your quest.. that to be trapped and held against its will is not the best way for the creature to teach what it knows. Each time I read it I understand Rudy's need to keep the hawk and the Hawk's need to be free and how Rudy comes to undertand the simplistic belief that to really be one with any creature it cannot be enslaved, it must be set free. By learning and letting go, Rudy can truly be as the hawk. Free.

This book is an excellent overview of the basic facts associated with brain injury. It clearly presents the nature of brain injury and the aftermath, both immediate and long term. It relates incidents of behavior and ways of coping with the difficulties during the recovery period.

The description of the matter of expectations and a realistic approach to the condition of the brain injured is helpful in dealing with the stress of sometimes confusing, frustrating and sudden change in the injured person and the family.

The kinds of related healthcare professionals and their functions are identified. The book is organized in a way that information is easily accessible; it contains useful and practical tips.

Altogether this is a very helpful guide through what is often a frightening, confusing and unfamiliar process.

Informative must read for the Head Injured and Caregivers.

This book say it all in a most readable way. It could be handed to a recent head injured person who is still confused as a tool to help understand what is happening to them. It should be compulsory reading for every family member and care giver of the head injured . My family and friends have all read it and I must say it transformed their attitude and understanding as to what I was dealing with. It is written in simple but concise language you do not have to have a degree to understand. It uses real life examples which enables one to be able to associate with individual aspects of what is being relayed. Not only does it formulate the problems but gives concise direction as to available solutions and strategies that can be adopted by all parties. I know that this book has been a most valuable tool in my development after my head injury and feel it has great merit. A viable gift to anyone with a head injury or has a head injury in the family.

I am thrilled at the selection available on this site andsuggest browsing through the "related subject" section forlots more books on Brain Injury...thank you Amazon.com! Prior to getting this book, everything I read dealt with MILD TBI...my sister sustained a very severe brain injury in an auto accident 11/7/99. My family ignorantly believed that her behavior post trauma was "real" and not a result of an injury, since my sister was a troubled person prior to the wreck. As we sat in the hospital, I read excerpts from this portable paperback aloud. Finally, my family was able to understand what I meant when I said that my sister was truly a "textbook case" of a brain injured person! Through three case studies involving a child, a young adult male, and a professional woman, the authors describe behaviors, feelings, and possible outcomes. It was comforting to know that my sister's deficits and her own lack of "insight" into her deficits were very common. My heart and prayers go out to all survivors and loved ones of victims of TBI...the road back is so hard that without resources like this book, it is close to impossible to navigate with any kind of serenity.

This book has helped me to better understand situations that a relative is going through from a near-fatal car accident. The different 'stages' and possible recovery difficulties are described in detail in this book: it tells about different patients and how they came through their recovery; it also explains about how their personalities can be affected by brain injury. It is a clearly written and easy to follow book, especially considering the fact that it deals with such a serious subject.

Now I don't need to write my book anymore. It is already written, and probably much better...
Rather than blocking or destroying illness, we can learn from it. Paradoxical, yes. Give a minute of your thoughts to this affirmation. Our body is just showing us the way we were unable to follow in our free consciousness. Learn from your illness, then your illness becomes useless and fades away. Illness represents the last opportunity for evolution. Whatever you do for healing, pay simultaneous attention to the only true healing. Take the challenge!

Originally published in German in 1983, it is in fact the forerunner of many books written in the '90s about the mind/body connection. Deeper and more powerful than the more popular works, it is a perfect gem. When you read about the influence of the mind on our various body systems, you will instantly recognize the symptoms and connecting psychology of your friends, your family, and even yourself. There's more than theory here, too - you'll find questions that will have you re-examining every concept you ever had about illness.

A WHOLE NEW PERSPECTIVE

One man's opinion:
A heady, fantastic read for those who are open to the broader viewpoint. To me, the book says basically that we need to evolve away from hating, disliking, shunning or rejecting certain ideas, people, places, and so on. We need to become whole. Jesus said we should "love one another," and I believe Paul Twitchell said, "Never find fault, never criticize." One reason for this is, as Healing Power points out, things we reject/hate just show up in our lives as illness. They show up so we can confront them - because we must! Life wants us to become whole, loving, enlightened - however you like to put it.
And there's much more here. Highly recommended - along with The Flute of God, another major, more-than-inspiring book.

This collection of true stories is both heart-warming and amazing. I'm already a dog-lover, but now I look at my two canine companions in a different light. Dogs house such potential to impact our lives out of sheer love and devotion.

Oprah would love this book!!PMillions of people already have a strong bond with their canine friends but this book gives prestige and acceptance to our love and devotion.PThe greatest thing this book points out is that LASSIE exists in all breeds and not just collies.PWe've always know they would give "THEIR LIFE" for us but this book verifies it.PThe love of such heros is felt in this book and we can identify their bravery with our own beloved pets

G. Peter Duffy graciously escorts us through his troubled life...his own experience of repeated attempts at sobriety offers us exposure the virtual hopelessness of the chronically addicted; and then he proves it all wrong - his complete account convinces us that no one is hopeless!

The author provides us with an autobiographical personal saga that is truly riveting; but more importantly he has discretely woven his methods of overcoming his seemingly uncompromising afflictions into this narrative - which are simple, practical techniques that are ours for the taking.

Not your typical novel - and not a traditional self-help guide (although as effective); this book is a treasure-trove of valuable solutions for those who have struggled with maintaining sobriety. I also recommend this book to anyone who could benefit from empowerment, self-love, and peace - especially those who have had difficulty with the concept and achievement of the same.

Mesmerizing story - a real page turner! Reads like fiction, and then it hits you, you are reading someone'e real life story - and what a story!

"Hey God, I'm Home" is inspiration to anyone. I have an addict friend I am trying to locate who I am confident would benefit from reading this book.

After reading Mr. Duffy's life story, I am amazed he is on this earth to tell it.

A strong and powerful true story. This book is nothing short of inspirational, a must read not only for those struggling with addiction, but for any one who is has fallen into a dark place and is reaching for the light. G. Peter Duffy offers us, by the power of his example, a road to find the comfortable place within our selves. There is no such thing as an impossible case, especially when it comes to the alcoholic, this truly remarkable story will shake you, rattle you, and calm you with the miracle of hope, faith and determination.

"Hey God I'm Home," is a must read for anyone who has experienced the crisis of addiction, self loathing, loss, abandonment and every other human dilemma that we are prone to. We are born innocent but our indoctrination from the cradle to the grave tells us we are guilty. What is it we are actually guilty of-- is the question G. Peter poses--our own sins or the sins handed down to us? G. Peter Duffy weaves a personal philosophy that is universal. As soon as we forget the sins of our father we can get on with ourselves. "It's about time we gave our thinking some thought...We all live with second hand beliefs..." The author takes us on a journey from his gutter bound existence to a Jacob's Ladder. G. Peter Duffy tells his true story and leaves nothing out. If you don't come out of this reading with a better grip on yourself, well then you didn't read it right. If this man conquered what he truly says he did, well, then there's hope for all of us. A must read for anyone struggling with addiction as well as looking to find their inner source of spirituality. G. Peter Duffy tells it like it is but tells it like no one else ever did.
