We really enjoyed this book as we taught our lab how to catch and return a frisbee. The book is fairly concise and has quite a few practical tips to encourage your dog to perform the tricks. The author uses some entertaining examples to illustrate his points. We found it to be a great introduction to learning to play frisbee with our dog.

Bloeme has put together a great book for the beginner and expert alike. He provides insights on ways to teach your dog to play frisbee and perform tricks. He also uses many personal examples from his experiences which help bring things into focus. If your looking to teach your dog frisbee just for fun or perhaps to compete this is a good place to start.

Poetry of the grotesque

This is a very handsome book in which the author and the illustrator have collaborated with remarkable skill. The verse is always amusing but can give a young reader some pleasant shivers. The array of grotesque creatures - gremlins, goblins, basilisks, gargoyles, headless ghosts - is presented most fascinatingly by the very brilliant artist, while the author gives the faintly sinister but always poetic nature of the pictures a frequent dimension of humour. My seven-year-old granddaughter fell immediately in love with the book which I greatly enjoyed reading out to her, but her ten-year-old brother and twelve-year-old sister were just as taken with it. In fact her elder brother and sister could appreciate rather more than she did how witty some of the verse is. Certainly a book I can recommend unreservedly to all lovers of books - young and old.

Jack Prelutsky strikes again. It is a wonderful book of rhyme with gargoyles, werewolves, gremlins, and vanpires populating the universe. The illustrations by Peter Sis' are subtle and whimisical, done in color and black and white. Excellent folklore book and recommended to all ages, from K through the 12th grade level, including parents and teachers. Anyone who enjoys folklore will enjoy this book.

I purchased this book for my almost-three-year old whom adores a gargoyle statue I own. On first reading, the monsters frightened her. However, she quickly picked up on the humor and emotions in the poems. She delights in the poems now and is less afraid of monsters. I would suggest that parents use a lot of goofy humor & voice fluctuations when reading the stories. Young children with a fear of monsters or an undeveloped sense of humor may need to grow into this book. Also, there are only 3 gargoyle poems, the balance are werewolf, vampire, gobblins, and boogeyman poems. This is now my daughter's favorite goodnight book..and no nightmares!

Entertaining, Wonderful Illustrations

This book is a treasure for the child who likes monsters! The poems are funny and give a good spin to being a monster and the illustrations are not overly ghoulish, though probably thought provoking in some instances. I do think though that age 4 is a little to young for this book - it really should be for a child who can distinguish real from fantasy as it introduces topics that might be scary to the child who still thinks monsters COULD be real. It was too much for my 5 year old nephew, the eight year old loved it.

Interested readers should be made aware that if a person does a net search for "Herbert Wilf's Home Page", and then goes to that site, the author has this book (and a number of other things)available for FREE downloading. That might be a great way to preview the book, even if you later decide to spend the money to get a nicely bound traditional copy here.

Generatingfunctionology is, in my opinion, one of the best mathematics books ever written. If you want to read one mathematics book that really makes a difference, this is it! I read the book twice, and I plan to read it again. I went from being rather inept at solving combinatorial problems to being a virtual "master" almost overnight! Wilf's writing style is clear, concise, and even humorous at times. Reading this book is like being blind and then having your eyes opened for the first time. Generating functions are an extremely powerful tool in number theory and combinatorics. Don't pass up this book! You may never become an Euler, but you sure can come close!

Oustanding book; certainly worth buying a hard-copy of

This book is freely available online, but it is so good that it is worth buying a hard-copy of, and it's reasonably priced too. I would advise potential buyers to check it out online; you'll probably find that you like it, and you'll probably buy it after you get tired of staring at your screen or making printouts.

Wilf is an outstanding writer, among the best writers in mathematics; this book is a true pleasure to read. His explanations are lucid and he has a great sense of humor. This book is not particularly advanced, although it is one of those texts that you can keep coming back to; it takes quite some time to exhaust the material in it and I have certainly not come close to doing so. It covers generating functions in the form of ordinary power series, exponential power series, and Dirichlet series, and it touches on a few other types of generating functions as well. There is a chapter on the exponential formula and a chapter which explores a more systematic approach to counting. The last chapter is on analytic methods to study asymptotic approximations to counting functions. The book is well organized; topics flow naturally, and yet it is easy to skip topics and move around freely. The exercises are immensely useful. They start simple, but there are many of them and they become progressively more difficult in a natural way.

This book would be suitable for an undergraduate course in combinatorics, and it also makes a good supplementary text for anyone studying combinatorics or possibly complex analysis at the graduate level. I find this book is excellent for self-study at any level as well. Check it out for yourself!

A wonderful book; sometimes it isn't so much formal as requested for a mathematical exposition of the subject. It does not contain so much about analytic combinatorics (study of G.F. according to complex analysis), and hypergeometric functions. But it remains a good book for everyone who never saw something about this subject. It presents to the reader a great variety of manipulating techniques for combinatorial sequences (and not only); I think it is a must-have (also must-read) for everyone who wants to start working in combinatorics; you must read it at least two times to master all the techniques.
Well, and it is written by H. Wilf...I think this can be a good motivation to read it.

Well-organized cookbook

This is a well-organized cookbook of generating function techniques. The emphasis is on combinatorial methods (breaking down the generating function into simpler, known functions). There is also a chapter on analytic methods (Lagrange reversion, contour integration, analysis of poles). The chapter on exponential generating functions is especially good; these are used when counting items that have "labelled components" in some sense. The book includes solutions of many difficult combinatorial problems by using generating functions.

I think generating functions are an under-appreciated technique. Studying this book is a relatively painless way to learn about generating functions and their applications.

I thought this book was wonderful. It carefully explores many questions that arise from the statement, "God is Love" and gives well-reasoned answers that are faithful to the Magisterium of the Church. This book is very uplifting because it helps you to really see how God is Love, and how God's love works in our lives. Prof. Kreeft helps you to rise above our common way of thinking about love in society and points the way for a deeper way of thinking about love in general and God's love in particular.

I feel this book has deepened my faith in God and my understanding of some of the Church's teachings on God's love. I find Prof. Kreeft to be very readable, and the pages go by quickly. I think this book is a "must-read", definitely for all adult Catholics and probably for all adult Christians. Quite honestly, when I finished this book I wanted to run into the streets and tell the world about it. I felt like I had been let-in on the world's best kept secret and the time had come to let that secret out!

I truly enjoyed this book. It was written in plain language and seemed very personable to me. It is a true story about Alma's life growing up on the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana and how she was deeply influenced by her grandmother Pretty Shield who taught Alma the old ways...she was a grandmother's grandchild. Pretty Shield was pretty smart I think. She had an appreciation for the natural world not seen too much anymore in our modern lives. I found these "old ways" interesting. This has influenced Alma for sure and she is able to reconcile this as well as the hardships of life with her deep Christian beliefs. God Bless you too Alma!

The love and care for Indian children by extended families is probably one of the greatest reasons the Indian people and traditions have survived. We in the "dominate culture" could learn much to change the disintigration of American families by learning more about Native American people.

This beautiful cloth covered book brings Ryokan to life. An extensive biography helps place him firmly in the lineage of zen fools. His poetry is well rendered, cutting to the heart of his enlightenment, his lonely village. Some of the preface seems a bit misplaced and foolish, attempting to address the question of whether he was 'enlightened,' with deep and silly consideration of his views relative the deconstructionist movement. But his skill as calligrapher and poet are well treated: the beauty of his poetry is not random! If you can afford it, the hardcover's worth the extra bucks because of the sweet binding, really a nice book to hold in your hands.

I discovered Ryokan around 20 years ago when I took out "One robe, one bowl" from the library. Since then I've bought that and most of the other English translations that have appeared. I finally gave in and spent the extra bucks to buy this one and have been thoroughly impressed and glad with my purchase. Not only does it contain more of his poetry than the other collections, but it also contains some superb biographical and critical essays. If you want to know more about this wonderful poet and person, this is THE book to get. I would hope every library in America would purchase it as well. Although I'm sure Ryokan would find this rather amusing, I can't help but call this the "Cadillac of Ryokan anthologies." A fantastic book!!

The Method to Ryokan's Great Foolishness

Review Date: 2007-02-13
Something about Ryokan just captures the imagination. An eccentric Zen monk living in a hut in the mountains, dashing off fine poetry and refined calligraphy after making the rounds in the towns below with his begging bowl, playing ball with the kids and sipping sake with the farmers along the way. Living a life free of the many conventions and responsibilities that hem us in, Ryokan seems to speak directly to us with a straightforward, friendly, unpretentious eloquence. Apparently this is a voice we find greatly appealing, and there are a great number of fine books about him and his poetry in English.

Still, of these, "Great Fool: Zen Master Ryokan" really stands out as an excellent scholarly treatment of Ryokan and his art. Special attention is given to the nature of his religious orientation and his place in late Tokugawa literary society. His relationships with sponsors and fellow literati (of both Confucian, Kokugaku, and Buddhist persuasions) are fleshed out through translations of his letters, his role and image in local society exemplified by Kera Yoshishige's firsthand biography (one of the earliest), and his strict Soto Zen religiosity are revealed in several sermonistic essays on Buddhism--these latter especially reveal a very different Ryokan, strident and very critical of the state of institutional Buddhism in his day, erudite in the difficult writings of Dogen and the canonical Mahayana sutras, whose practice of seclusion and begging turn out to be highly unusual in his own context and thus a very intentional manifesto of his firmly-held religious principles. And of course there are the poems, lots and lots of them, both kanshi and waka, all of which have been specially selected with a view to shedding light on many of these same questions--for what they tell us about Ryokan the literatus, Ryokan the local weirdo, Ryokan the Soto Zen monk, and hence Ryokan the man living during late Tokugawa Japan.

The three scholarly essays at the beginning of the book by Haskel and Abe outline these same themes as well as discussing perceptions of Ryokan in modern and contemporary Japan, his role as a kind of household name and folkloric culture hero and the very divergent academic takes on him by his different Japanese interpreters. Much consideration is given too to the evolution of Ryokan studies over time and of the nature and reliability of the sources we use to understand him. All of this makes this book extremely useful, almost indispensable really, for anyone who wants to study Ryokan in-depth, and this more than makes up for the fact that the translations of the poems themselves seem just a tad prosaic sometimes. Highly recommended to anyone interested in late Tokugawa Buddhism and its relation to literature as well as to all diehard Ryokan fans, of course.

Ryokan,a great zen monk who dubbed himself"the great fool" is one of the most revered figures in all Japan. As a wandering begging monk{one robe, a bowl and walking stick} Ryokan celebrates the quotidian, whether a stong pot of tea, sake, playing ball with village children,or the warming embers of a dying fire in the midst of Winter,he makes these images come alive, with vibrancy and suppleness. This volume conatins remembrances of Ryokan from contemporaries, disciples, students and those he met along the way. Along with his Reflections on Buddhism, this volume also contains a very helpfulessay, a poetics of mendicancy by ryuichi abe`,and another essay by ab`,commemorating ryokan. the introductory essay by peter haskel, ryokan of mount kugami puts ryokan in his historical perpective. However, above all, it is the pure airy poetry of the master himself.Cleansing and wonderful...

"Great Fool" is the best English source I've found for Ryokan's poems and life history. When I feel a bit overwhelmed, I always turn to Ryokan and his simple and direct approaches to life.

"Great Fool" starts off with three essays that deal with (among other things) Ryokan's modern popularity and the debate whether Ryokan was an enlightened Zen man. This last topic I found greatly interesting, especially his being coopted by Marxist thinkers who saw in him a failed zennist and bitter poet.

Next is a collection of stories of Ryokan's life and the poems, Kanshi poems written in Chinese and shorter Waka poems written in Japanese. Ryokan shares alot of spirit with Han-shan, or Cold Mountain, except that Ryokan's poetry seems livelier and more personable than Cold Mountain's, though this could be a result of the translations. It also could be the result of Ryokan's constant association with people - indeed, like a Bodhisattva, Ryokan never really left the world. Instead of running from inquirers with shreiks and giggles, Ryokan delightfully pulls a rubber playing ball from his sleeve.

The book ends with a collection of letters and essays written by Ryokan, which give a great insight into his daily life. I especially like how he ends some of his letters:

That's all.
Ryokan

Enjoy! That's all.

This book is a wonderful source of inspirational quotations. Through the words of plain folks and great thinkers, you are continually reminded of the spirit of hope and the advancement of the state of working people. The first chapter, This Working Life, has quotes beginning with the Bible and continuing with voices throughout history and from all over the world. The other 16 chapters are more prominently by Americans and about the labor movement. There is a lot more here than quotations. There are short biographies of labor leaders. Photographs and cartoons illustrate issues like unemployment, global competition, and working conditions. The book is a great reminder of how far the average worker has come in the last 100 years, how the fight for a decent living never ends, and how these issues effect all of us. Union members will find the resource directories helpful in finding many more information sources. Overall, a very well thought out book that's captivating and a good resource.

This book delivers a lot more than a collection of quotations about work and the labor movement. Quotations are divided into 17 chapters that cover work issues in everything from Politics and Union Organizing to professional Sports. There's 19th century drawings, photographs and current cartoons that address the issues covered by the quotations. Visually, the book looks like a labor of love--each page is outlined with quotation graphics, and drawings and photos are handled well. To summarize, this book is a great source for quotations; they're easy to track down through 3 different indexes. But what is surprizing is all the history that's presented through the quotations, citations, author comments, and biographies of labor leaders. It's great fun and a very rewarding book. I savored it a few pages at a time.

An excellent full-spectrum labor quote reference.

This is a labor quotation sourcebook and provides an intriguing survey of issues of work and labor drawn from the experiences of the American labor movement. Writers and speakers will find this packed with quotes organized by topic, from civil rights, economics, politics and the law to the corporate world and unemployment. An excellent reference.

John Bauer's illustrations are splendid, with rich detail reminiscent of early Renaissance art. Olenius' prose is at once magical and informal. My daughter's third grade class fell in love with the book after a reading of just one of these tales. Most American children are not exposed to the tales of other cultures, and these stories of trolls and princesses, brave little boys, green-haired witches, magical plants and talking animals.

A book to be passed on to the next generation

My mother got this book in the early 70's and has since been passed on to me, much to her denial. But since I no longer live with my parents and I have the book with me I think its safe to say its finally mine. This book has the most wonderful collections of fairy tales. This is a book to be loved by all generations, not just children. I have had a love for fairy tales since I was an infant and this book is the only one I have come across that can truly feed my appetite for such tales. The stories are filled with trolls, tomtes, page boys, princess', and magic. They are stories of underdogs becoming hero's, good conquering evil, and love overcomming all obsticals. Whether that love be for family (which it generally is) or the classic man and maiden. The stories are only made richer by the illustrations done by John Bauer. Of course a review can never do this book justice. To find out how truly wonderful it is you'll have to read it for yourself. Welcome to the wild woods of Sweden. Enjoy your stay!

Tales of kinder, gentler evil spirits

When reading the fairy tales of a culture, you not only learn what they thought, but also the climate of their origins. The habitat of the Swedes is quite clear from this collection, where all tales are about trolls and ogres in a forest. What distinguishes these creatures from those in the tales from other locations is that the trolls are not totally evil and must follow a strict code of conduct. For example, even though a troll may want to cook and eat you, once they accept something from you they are forbidden to harm you in any way.
All manner of trolls and other creatures of the forest are described in these tales. In most of them, they are interacting with humans, sometimes passing for humans in their attempts to obtain riches, mates or just to satisfy their curiosity about humans. Oddly enough, the heroes in these tales rarely vanquish their foes by chopping of their heads. Sometimes they defeat them by trickery and other times by kindness. All of the stories have happy endings, occasionally when the captive princess is rescued by the hero in the nick of time. However, even when holding captives against their will, the trolls do not torture their victims, unless you consider troll kindness to be a torture.
I really enjoyed these tales of heroes, heroines and not so bad trolls who have their good points. With almost no killing, maiming or other features found in other fairy tales, this is a collection of stories that any child can read. It was fascinating to me that from the Swedish point of view the trolls of the forest were not evil, just similar creatures with a strict code of ethics who occasionally did bad things. Take away the strict code of ethics part and you have human behavior.

This is one of my favorite book since girlhood. As with most fairy tales, many of these involve the expected kinds of storylines (quest stories, moral tales, etc.), but have the benefit of being less well-known than the ones by Grimm et al. Charming stories told in just the right way. Lots of princesses and trolls, tomten (Scandinavian elves of a sort) and moose. And, of course, John Bauer's haunting artwork is not to be missed.

Winter seems eternal north of the Arctic Circle, and magic blows on the North Wind like snow crystals. Great Swedish Fairy Tales by Holger Lundbergh, John Bauer (Illustrator) bewitches with the charms of trolls, tomtes, courtiers, croft farmers and wide-eyed children. This collection of several truly great Swedish tales is illuminated by John Bauer's dark ink. Bauer paints a world of magic and detail making this a masterpiece beautiful to behold. You'll recognize some of the images as familiar, and some will haunt you with delight. The illustrations grace the pages; the stories grace the imagination.
