I cannot review this item. The incorrect item was ordered and returned to
seller. The return went very smoothly with no snags or complications at all.

I was well pleased with the way transaction was handled, although, I thought
the freight charges were rather high on an item that weighed as little as
this one.

Somehow, Egan talks about things I have also done or thought about, and uses just the right words to describe them...Amazing. Like the others in the series, these are repeats from Road and Track. Even though I have read most of them before, that does not diminish the joy I feel in reading them again (and again!).

This is one cool book by a very witty writer who digs mostly vintage English cars. If you're in to British cars, or any cars for that matter, you should read it. Peter Egan is wonderful.

Another splendid offering from Sir Peter Egan. Once again Egan has delivered a compilation of our favorite columns - this time from Road & Track magazine. Egan has the uncanny knack of capturing the essence of the open road and transforming it into the written word. The book is full of his tales and ancedotes of driving, restoration and racing. A brilliant book and a must for any automotive enthusiast.

Besause they have been written by the same person. Perhaps by friends of the authors or by the publisher (I don't want to blaim the authors because they have may good books published so far and I own most of them). On the other hand these reviews don't change the fact that this is a really good book on MANs with sonet (though it is not the MAN bible). Warmly recommended.

After reading Spell Success in Your Life, I realized that my goals keep changing as I get older. Peter's book helped me organize my goals according to what I want and can achieve NOW and keep those other goals on the horizon (just within my reach). The stories helped bring everything together. Success and failure will always be in our lives and Peter's book helps us feel as though no matter what happens we CAN and WILL achieve our goals and survive the success that comes our way. Peter's book is pure, truthful, inspiring and motivating. Les Brown was right when he said "Pure motivation from start to finish!" I will continue to re-read this book as my goals change, for every goal and dream that is achieved leaves another in its place just waiting...

Full of energy and passion!

Like many people, I never thought that I would read a self-help or motivational book that could actually help me in any way. It so often happens that you see people who have read and then implemented into their lives the techniques outlined in "How to get rich quick" or "How to lose weight fast" books and subsequently don't become any richer or thinner, that you become skeptical of any book that claims it can change your life for the better. I believe that 99% of the self-help books out there fall into this category, and will do absolutely nothing for you. However, one book that would certainly fall into the 1% of books that CAN improve your life is Peter Colwell's, Spell SUCCESS in Your Life. After reading just the first few pages, you can literally FEEL how passionate Peter is about what he is saying, and that he is truly committed to helping anyone become successful in their lives. You also get that sense that Peter realized long ago something that most motivational writers still have not...that everyone's idea of what it means to be "successful" in life is different. He doesn't outline a get rich quick scheme, or give you instructions on how to start your own business, or to own the home of your dreams. Instead, he outlines specific and practical techniques that ANYONE can use in order to become successful at whatever it is they strive for. This book has certainly helped and inspired me, and I would recommend it to everyone, as I can't think of a single person who wouldn't reap at least some benefits in their life from reading it.

Written from the point of view from a person, who has definitely been there and done that, Peter Colwell's "Spell SUCCESS in your life" has made me realize things that were already smack dab in my face. Peter's comforting writing style makes you feel as though you were talking with an old friend.
Used as a goal setting guide or a user manual for a happy life, this book has been by far been my wisest purchase of 2002. I give it two very enthusiastic thumbs up!

Stella In Berlin Pre-War II

Stella is my kind of history. First person who was there, through their own eyes. When I majored in American History I wondered what happened to the Jews who were my age during the war. Thinking that I would not have fallen in the Nazi traps which led to the camps. This book helps explain where the 20 year olds went during the war. The author was in Berlin before the war with many school friends and neighbors. The follow-up with his friends and the stories of their lives during and after the war is amazing. Riveting. I couldn't put it down and would recomment this book to anyone interested in Berlin history during the war.

Mr. Wyden finds the painful truth about a childhood friend.

I do not wish to hurt anyone who has suffered from the holocaust by writing this review, nor do I want dishonor anyone who was destroyed by it. I am only making an observation about what happened to this woman named Stella. Stella was a beautiful blonde girl who reached early maturity during WWII in Berlin. She was Jewish, but with her blue eyes she could easily pass for a gentile. When Hitler started his personal war against Jews, he initiated the most horrible and beastly experience that could happen to human beings. With his henchmen, and their vicious attacks on Jews and other peoples, he pushed people into emotional dungeons, and it is at these dark, these lowest levels, that we discover what we are really capable of doing. In his painful memoir of his experiences of the holocaust, Elie Weisel, shows us in Night, that when the Nazis tossed tiny bits of bread to starving Jews, many of them killed for that one morsel of food, sometimes ending the lives of their loved ones for a chance to put something in their mouths. For me, this book was about survival. No one knows what they are capable of unless they are taken to that horrifying nightmare place of doom, and unless one has been there, there is absolutely no way of knowing what our choices would be. Many would argue that Stella did not get to the extremes that occurred in the death camps. But we do know that she was beaten over and over and over again. And then she was offered a chance to have it all end by being a "catcher" for the Nazis. We know that other Jews committed suicide to avoid the beatings and the offer of becoming a catcher to stay alive. I can only thank God that I have never had to be in such a situation, because I don't know what I would do. How could I know? I do know that I have a very strong instinct to live, and I think that may have been why Stella took the path that she did. I believe, that in making that choice, she did lose her "soul." I think that is the only way that a human being could do what she did. For Stella did not only "catch" Jews for the Nazis, many eyewitnesses said she seemed to enjoy it. I think for anyone to make that "choice" you would have to put your entire being into it in order to perform those horrible crimes. In the end, I think Stella suffered far more than if she had allowed herself to die at the hands of the Nazis. At the age of about 21, she began the life of a person who is hated by virtually everyone she had ever known and anyone she would ever meet. She lives her life constantly attempting to convince herself that she didn't do anything wrong. She lives in total seclusion, with the lights always dim, year after year with no one to love her, no one to hold her, no one to console her. And still she survived into old age. Survival was Stella's strongest urge. It kept her alive to live a lifelong death, the death of her humanity, with the destruction of hundreds, perhaps thousands on her hands. Would I choose survival? In retrospect, had I been a "Stella," I can only pray that I would have had the ability to accept my death at the hands of the Nazis.

A Question of Guilt
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-12
Wyden mixes personal reminiscences about his youthful schoolboy infatuation with schoolmate Stella with a history of the persecution of Jews in Berlin and Stella's ever duplicitous role in it. Ultimately, he portrays a pathetic, lonely and isolated woman who refuses to acknowledge any guilt, real or alledged, or personal responsibility in betraying Jews to the Gestapo.

This book is history and personal anecdote while concurrently begging thought provoking questions about guilt and capitulation. One could easily conclude that had Stella been born in a different place at a different time she would have been a totally ordinary person living out an uneventful life. Sometimes it almost seems that Wyden wants to believe this too. For her part, she claims that even had there been any cooperation with the Gestapo it was to spare the lives of her parents. Is she guilty out of concern for her parents (they ultimately perished) and therefore somewhat forgiven by the "I was just obeying orders" defense so frequently echoed throughout World War II and VietNam; or is she guilty because an ordinary person was born into and negatively impacted by the truly bizarre and cruel world of 1940s Berlin?

Stella is ultimately a disturbing portrait of a truly personal human tragedy; her own and those who suffered for it.

Blond Betrayer

Few can match the infamous Blond Poison, Stella Goldschlag, who stalked the alleys of Berlin seeking former friends, School Classmates and neighbers as as well as total strangers not out of loneliness but in order to betray them and send them to the Gas Chambers to be murdered in her place during the Holocaust. She well deserves her reputation as a Judas to the Jews of Berlin, the men, women and children whom she betrayed by the score to preserve her own life.

This book is basicly her story. Written by a former classmate.

It details much of her early life to the best of the author's knowledge. It then goes on to describe her career as a Griefer, one of the scores of Jews who openly chose to assist the Gestapo finding the Jews in hiding so to deport them to the death camps in exchange for their own survival.

A career in which Stella Goldschlag was one of the Gestapo's best.

One could compare her to the infamous Blond Irma Grese (who is not mentioned in this book) but Wyden shows her life was a far cry from nightmare that of the infamous Blond Beast's. She was not mistreated. Her mother spoiled her. Her father hardly interfered. She certainly had contact with better men in the beginning. A far cry from the horrors of Irma Grese's nightmare life that ultimately exploded with deadly fury upon the inmates of Auschwitz with all the savagery of a mistreated dog.

When one looks at the infamous Blond Poison and her Domestic Partner Rolf Isaacson one finds no reason to sympathise with them at all. They did what they did as a matter of choice. Wyden even reports the infamous Blond Poison enjoyed her work.

This is the story of one woman's choice in Evil.

This book is well worth seeking out, even if it is out of print.

What makes it all the more fascinating is that the author grew up with the subject of the biography. The text seems meandering at first, but the interweaving of his story -- and that of Stella -- comes sharply into focus, as the writer shares his innermost thoughts.

Although he does not make Stella blameless, he does demonstrate empathy for her -- in the end, she lives but has lost her soul. She is an unforgetable character. Striking, too, are the many `supporting' characters Wyden introduces to us, brave and courageous Jews who survived in Berlin through much of the war and, in some cases, all of it. These individual stories are striking, heart-warming, sometimes funny, and always unforgetable. I found the book as engrossing as a fictional thriller, truly a `can't put down' item! Don't miss it!

Although I do believe this book to be essential to the entire Green Knowe collection I can't give it a full five stars. The story has great "bones" but not the same creativity as the other five books. There is also a bit too much lamenting about how things of progress, such as cars ("They droned like cockchafers as they approached, screaming as they went past him as a swift passes, and followed by roars and stinking fumes."), ruined the land and the forest. I kept feeling like more "knowing" conversations were going to take place between Roger and his grandmother and I found myself disappointed. So much potential, but a bit of a let down for me.

I'm a little concerned that the previous five books in the "Green Knowe" series all seem to be back in print whilst "The Stones of Green Knowe", the sixth and final book (an essential part of the collection) has apparently been neglected. If you are tracking down Lucy Boston's fantastic series of books, then don't stop at "A Stranger at Green Knowe" - there is one more book to be read, though it is obviously not as well-known as the others.

"The Stones of Green Knowe" completes Boston's series, and aptly takes us right back to the beginning of Green Knowe: to its original construction in 1120 A.D. The very first of the Green Knowe children is Roger, the grandson of a Norman Earl, who is excited beyond words at the building of a two-storied stone house, complete with windows. Roger's days are spent watching the flocks and exploring the construction site, with as much attention given to historical accuracy and detail as one would expect from Rosemary Sutcliffe. Like all the previous young protagonists, he is surrounded both by semi-mysterious characters sympathetic to his situation (such as the Viking Olaf Olafson, who gifts him with a magical knife, and another kindly grandmother reminiscent of the not-yet-born Grandmother Oldknow), and characters that make his life a little bit more difficult - such as a snobbish mother, not the first one to appear in Boston's books, leading me to believe that the author knew one personally.

Yet despite being surrounded by all this excitement, Roger becomes captivated by the talk of the workers, who mention among themselves two mysterious stones out on the hills: "Surely you've heard of them? Very old, they were. Two of them standing out alone on a grassy hill at twilight, it gave you the jumps to see them." Roger, along with his horse Viking and his dog Watchet, seek them out, and by clearing away some brush, discovers the King and Queen Stones: the source of the magic of Green Knowe.

From there the real adventures begin, as Roger discovers what later generations have yet to do: time travel back and forth to discover the other children of Green Knowe, and the fate of his beloved home. In true Lucy Boston style, there is added in little notes of Roger's discomfort at the environmental destruction of the forest, but it never overshadows what we are really interested in: his meetings with Toby, Alexander and Linnet, with Susan and Jacob, and with Tolly, all living in the same house at different times. Marvelling at the differences they all face, the reader is eventually rewarded with a beautiful scene of all the children gathered together under the beech tree...joined by yet another unexpected child, who gives Roger a special keepsake.

After six books in the series, I was very sad to see its end, as with all great literature, I had grown quite attacted to Green Knowe and its inhabitants. It was a touch of genius to have the final book take place at 'the beginning' as it were, as we finally can understand where St Christopher came from, how Green Knowe got its name, and how the time travelling was made possible in the first place: through the Stones, whose origins remain an eternal mystery. If there was one fault, it was that Ping, Ida and Oskar were completely absent - in the final book, surely it would have been the right time to bring ALL the children together, but it seems Boston wanted to keep only the children of Roger's bloodline in for simplicity's sake.

"The Stones of Green Knowe" is the perfect ending to a stunning series of somewhat unknown books, leaving us with the major theme of the books: the ongoing battle to protect that which is natural and beautiful. I found it extremely fitting that the book ended with one last enigma concerning the fate of the Stones, and what appears to be the end of the time-travelling, for the last sentence of this last book took my breath away in its sadness and potency.

This wonderful book needs to be re-issued!

Years after reading the other Green Knowe books, I found this in a school library. I think it ranks with the best earlier volumes (Children and Treasure, in my opinion) and deserves to be available for the general reader, not just the collector. The images of loss from medieval times to the present are almost too much to bear ...

Odd that some of these are out of print and some aren't, but any public library with a collection dating back to the sixties should have a copy.

Stones is indeed about Roger, son of the Norman lord who built Green Knowe, and the building of Green Knowe. Like all of the series, mysterious and imaginative and full of historical detail.

Like the best books of this type, the series creates a world of which the books merely touch the surface.

Highly recommended.

My 8 year old daughter loves this book. On her first read through she said she only solved 1 or 2 of them herself, but she has since enjoyed reading them aloud to my husband and I to see if she can stump us. I've missed at least one, and we haven't read them all yet.
Based on my daughter's experience, I'd recommend this for ages 7 - 12. (or older, as I said, I got stumped too!)

Really a neat book, not only for kids, but for adults, too. Helps to sharpen thinking skills, while learning a little about the folklore of other countries and cultures.

Marvelous folktales that present a challenge and a smile.

I just ordered several of these books to give as birthday gifts for my 9 year old daughter's friends, but I had to read through it before we gave them away. Now I may need to purchase one for our house! The stories were fun, interesting and challenging, but not so difficult that my daughter couldn't figure some out for herself. I agree with the previous review that it makes one "think outside the box" - and is a fun and valuable asset to any library!

This book consists of folktales, very concisely told, that in some sense are a riddle, a puzzle, a play on words ... These stories are presented as problems to solve.

A major strength of the book is the variety of sources of the tales - Tibetan, Aesop, Armenia, India, Grimm brothers, Ethiopian, Japan; in fact many of the stories could have come from any of a number of cultures. The illustrations add to the interest of the book for its intended audience.

The only weakness is that in only one case does it offer alternative answers. For example, in filling a room perfume works as well as light; if children are reading the book independently, they may not have the confidence to recognize that their answer is a clever as the one given in the text.

The stories are fun - parents and children should enjoy this.

I don't know about the past life recall that this deck is supposedly intended to help with, but for triggering profound insights about CURRENT daily life issues and relationships etc.. this is an eerily accurate pack of cards. The pictures alone are worth the purchase and bring out the meanings and associated astrological symbolism of each card with perfect clarity. I just hope these cards will remain in print and that someone may eventually convince/commission this talented artist Thea Weller to design a tarot deck as well...

A very strange, unique and magical deck for inner wisdom.....

I love this strange, weird and exquisite deck. I have over a 100 Tarot and Oracles and this is the most unusual one I have come across. The artwork is some of the most stunning out there. such little details done with precision and vibrancy. I can only hope the artist one day decides on doing a Tarot deck. The colours are amazing, this is high-quality printing. There are 78 cards and they are are 3x5 and very easy to shuffle and handle. It's a very substantial and top-notch production in every aspect.

It also has many more uses than the creators very limited ideas of how to use these cards. This is one of the few decks that shows the whole spectrum...from very very dark/frightening to blissfully happy....and everything in between. So many of the images come from myths, folktales and fairytales....it's bursting with archetypes. Many cards are so reminiscent of Tarot images (minors and majors). But it's not a Tarot at all and it's uses run the gamut from inner shadow work, persona/mask identification, relationship issues, storytelling, divination, self-growth, inspiration, creative writing prompts, spiritual pathworking/exploration and self-actualization. As you can see this deck's range is broad and many layered. The sky is the limit as to how this deck may be used. The images evoke some very strong reactions and can set your exploration and imagination off in many directions. You will find this is a deck you reach for again and again.

The LWB is wonderful (and very large) if sometimes a bit stilted because of the translation. The author can come across as sort of preachy and know-it all. Like his/her way is the way, the only way to look at the archetype and image/card, sometimes it's almost as if you're being yelled at

Per usual a strange and very different deck has a german only large book. Disappointing! I hear the book has meanings card a day, affirmations and much more, I would love to be able to read it! But the large LWB sets you off on the right direction and is very useful.

If just for the exquisite and sublime art in these cards this deck is worth owning, but it delivers so much more. Get it yourself and awaken the muse within.

The Symbolon deck is a pictorial representation of the twelve astrological archetypes and their relationships, all depicted as persons. Their content is based on hundreds of therapeutic sessions with patients and draws from fairy tales, mythology, religion and common archetypes.

You should consider the symbolon deck as a blueprint of the author's complete therapeutic knowledge.

It can be used to clarify astrological constellations, but the authors developed a set of twelve spreads to be used seperately from astrology. Ingrid Zinnel even defined meanings for them as "card of the day", with self-empowering statements.

The artist did an outstanding job. No other deck has these amount of breathtaking images.

Note that all literature describing the use of this deck is in German only.

Actually, you can tell about a person's life with this deck, as well as many other situations that a diviner would want to know. I have had this deck for years, and what made me search it out on this site is that I recommended it to someone else and I wanted her to recognise the deck! I love it, and it is worth the buy!

I have had this deck for a few years and I still cannot figure it out! It pretty much does it on its own when I sit down to read for others. The images are startling, based on classical archetype. The is very little occult symbolism used other than astrology. This one could take or leave. It is not required to have a lot of information about this subject.

The booklet that comes with the deck is translated from German and is not easy to follow. I tossed it aside and begun to "feel" out each card. There are many images to reflect upon. They range from the silly to dire. In the hands of a serious therapist this could give great insight to many.

It is fun in beginners hands. This is NOT a Tarot deck. This means no books to study. The cards could lead to further study and divination.

A Concerted Approach to the Fight Against Terrorism
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-01-17
After the initial shock caused by the 09/11/2002 terrorist attacks on the United States, the need to better understand the mechanisms of terrorism, and above all the existing tools to fight it, has become more pressing and has been felt throughout the globe. As rarely a day goes by without some media reference to a possible or an actual terrorist attack, awareness of the available international instruments to fight terrorism is the key to understanding current affairs and the world of today. In the book Terrorism and the International Legal Order, Peter J. van Krieken shares with the reader his in-depth knowledge over international legal institutions.

In spite the complexity of the subject, the reader will be guided through some of the major legal instruments - UN and non-UN, international and regional - available in the fight against terrorism with relative ease. The detailed table of contents also offers the reader the possibility of glancing through the whole spectrum quickly and choosing, for example, to learn more precisely about the role of the UN or of some of its bodies (Security Council, General Assembly, ECOSOC, Trusteeship Council, ICJ) in the fight against international terrorism. Before the end of the book, the reader will come to grasp that these present instruments only need to have their effectiveness increased and that, with enhanced cooperation, they can serve as efficient tools in the fight against international terrorism.

Terrorism and the International Legal Order is recommended reading for anyone who wishes to understand more clearly and in a very concrete manner the challenges of today's world in the face of terrorism. It is equally recommended to all of those who remain shocked and unconditionally condemn terrorist acts of any kind. It is also recommended to those who realize that civil liberties cannot exist without safety and that at times concessions on the former must be made. Finally, to those rightly concerned about the balance between civil liberties and security, this book is a serious way of understanding the dangers posed by terrorism and possibly a new way to look at the balancing of both.

In-depth analysis of international law and terrorism

Terrorism and the International Legal Order is an excellent compilation of international law regarding terrorism. The book reviews important UN resolutions passed before and after September 11th, it presents definitions of terrorism throughout recent history in order to determine exactly what terrorism is, and it supplies information on the treatment of the topic by several UN bodies. Further, Van Kieken explores the connection between international terrorism and migration (laws), and refers to several cases while putting them in an international law context. The book also includes most relevant texts of UN conventions, resolutions, etc.
Overall, this book provides a clear and concise insight into the legal aspects regarding (international) terrorism. It is especially recommended to those who have a previous understanding of international law/institutions/relations, without which this volume might prove somewhat challenging to read. Also, it is very useful for students of international law/relations, or anyone attempting to grasp these issues surrounding terrorism.

I find this book to be an excellent addition for those who already have some sort of background or knowledge of international relations and international law etc. It looks into certain aspects of terrorism - examning certain cases. By looking to each organ of the United Nations and its role within combatting terrorism, I find it to be of great use to my studies. The author not only offers facts and documentation - he deeply examines the issues at hand with reference to those facts and documents. By doing so he clarifies somewhat difficult to read UN documents and non-UN documents - explaining them in clear english. Not only did I add to my knowledge of international relations, I learned a lot of new things as well.

Since the tragic events of September 11th, there have been many books written about terrorism and the law but few are as balanced as van Krieken's Terrorism and the International Legal Order. Rather than focusing on the perpetrators or their acts, this book places terrorism in context with the various instruments of law. It is a must read for any student of international relations and/or international law. It is an excellent resource and guide to the relevant United Nations (UN) and non-UN conventions and legal instruments dealing with terrorism

The "red line" of the book is that terrorism is "unjustifiable" regardless of the perpetrators motives, actions or intentions. This, van Krieken points out, was not always the case. The General Assembly, especially in the 1960's during the years of decolonisation and self-determination, dared to sympathize with terrorists. In the General Assembly's Resolution 44/29 it sought to determine "the underlying misery, frustration and despair which cause some people to sacrifice human lives, including their own in an attempt to effect radical changes" (pg. 113). Such thinking, van Krieken argues, has never been legally nor morally correct and is no longer the accepted stance of the United Nations.

The book investigates each of the six arms of the Untied Nations (the General Assembly, Security Council, Secretariat, International Court of Justice, Economic and Social Council and the now defunct Trusteeship Council) and outlines their contribution to the fight against terrorism. Each of the arms has passed significant resolutions and reports and investigated incidences of terrorism which have contributed to the international legal order. Van Krieken, however, is quick to point out that the law is only a tool and not a goal in itself. While the law may view terrorism as illegal, politics may frustrate these laws. For example, the decision to provide the gunmen who seized the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem safe haven in Europe is in direct contrast to the intentions of Security Council Resolution 1373 which states that terrorists should never be allowed safe haven and that the principle of aut dedere aut judicare (prosecute or extradite) should be reinforced.

Remarkably, with all of the legal documents and conventions contained within this book, it is very readable especially for non-lawyers. At the same time, it is also a valuable resource for practitioners and academics. van Krieken is careful to always place terrorism in today's context; the discussion on crossborder issues and terrorism is particularly interesting and one that is usually forgotten. It therefore represents one of those rare marriages of "legalize" and common sense.

Despite over a hundred different definitions and the emotion associated with terrorism, van Krieken is able to tease out the new international legal order and make it tangible. His writing is clear and precise. The footnotes, rather than being a distraction, contribute to the reader's understanding of the thinking behind many of the resolutions and should not be missed. The one weakness of this book, however, is the lack of annotated index; this should be included in any new revisions of the book.

Terrorism is, sadly, not a new concept and one that we read about nearly every day in the newspaper. If you wish to place terrorism within the greater legal context, then this book is a must read.
