Brave look at a controversial subject

A brave and bold look at a topic that is still extremely controversial and whose examination seems wrought with fanatical hatred and misunderstanding. We need to see this aspect of humanity with a more reasonable eye.

This is a fabulous book of beautiful illustrations and endless imagination. The author combines ideas of reality such as cats that fly, a cubed moon, and even a mouth full of toes. The ideas are simply presented in a way that stretches the mind and builds creativity. A must for every reader young and old!

Such wonderful letters! They are so descriptive and interesting that all ages will enjoy this book. It would be great for teachers of the Civil War Era. It has such intersting facts about the day to day life of a soldier in South Carolina.Thank you to the author of the letters and the editors of the book for caring enough to share these wonderful words!

Human behavior is a fascinating subject. This book covers everything - from yawning to dealing with change, from doodles to shyness, from brain construction to hugs. Written in concise chapters, filled with useful, thought-provoking information. One can learn how to cultivate creativity, how to make successful small-talk, how to overcome nasty habits, how to problem-solve, the role of natural light in physical and mental health, plus much more. This is a fascinating, informative read.

This is a great book for the 4-8 year olds. the pictures are peek-a-boo and pop-up so they can see what the animals have eaten, and with a surprise at the end my 5 year old loves and wants it read every night. Excellent to get the little ones interested in reading.

a fascinating collection of essays

Perry Anderson, one of the leading minds of the NEW LEFT REVIEW, has collected here a series of critical engagments on some of the most important intellectuals of our time. Cosmopolitan, internationalist, multilingual, Anderson has provided a series of essays that are breathtaking in their wideness of vision. He begins with a complex essay discussing the fall of the Roman Empire in comparison with G.E.M de Ste Croix's The Class Struggle in the Ancient Greek World. He then provides a compelling explanation for the development of modernism and modernist culture. He examines and intelligently and sympathetically critiques wide-ranging analysis of the development of human society by Lord Runciman and Michael Mann. From examining the Italian liberal Norberto Bobbio, to the Brazillian communitarian of Roberto Unger, and to the czech sociologist Ernest Gellner, he moves on to discuss the nature of witchcraft with Carlo Ginzburg, pluralism and the development of liberty in Isaiah Berlin, and nationalism and national character with Fernand Braudel. Finally he discusses Francis Fukuyama and asks whether Marxism has any meaning after the end of history. He concedes nothing to sentiment, but still provides a clear defence. If there is a weakness in the book, it lies in a perhaps too sympathetic account of German diplomatic historian Andreas Hilgruber, and a surprisingly uncritical citing of Vaclav Havel. But otherwise Anderson consistently shows a profoundity and range of reading that makes the intellectuals of the New Republic and the New Yorker appear insular and narrowminded.

twisted, horrifying, disgusting, revolting, perverted, vomit-inducing, etc.

this is the worst book i've ever read, along with the house on mango street. i had to read this the summer before ninth grade. yes, ninth! i was THIRTEEN and i had to submerge myself in this perverted sick unhealthy (most likely drug-induced) for lack of a better word, BOOK. i was horrified, disgusted, revolted, terrified, and it was NOT a pleasant read. i couldn't even finish it. i stopped after about 100 pages, and akwardly had to tell my mom that i didn't want to finish it. she read it and agrees with me. why this is considered a "CLASSIC" is beyond me. it sounds like alice walker is on crack and wrote down the first twisted, sick, perverted scence she could think of. i would NEVER recommend this book, especially for schools.

I have now read this book twice, once as a high school student and then again for one of my college classes. I love this book. Each time I read it I get something new out of it. I think I is a book that once old enough everyone should give it a shot. The only bad thing is that this is a book that you either love of hate..there is no happy middle. I loved it and will no doubt read it again!

Color purple was a good book to read. Though there were moments when author is taken too much steps to describe the bad life of black people at that time. Full of feelings, emotions and motivations, this book had changed my views in many points. Thanks to it I get new visions of the life people at that time. But still, it seems to me that main hero of the novel Celie is too much absorbed in her own world. Her way of living, sometimes, makes me crazy. I ask myself: "Is she cannot do anything to leave this place?" Of course, she left in the end but most of her life had passed. She lost too much for the time being with MR. The book overall is not bad. I easily read it. There were moments when I felt too bad for Celie.I stopped reading but began again after a while. It was too amazing to stop it after beginning. It has interest format of letters. Every letter represents news and some details. The fact that the book full of short letters makes the reading interesting.
I enjoyed the book and strongly advise to read it.

The Color Purple is about a young girl named Celie who has many hardships in her life. She goes on a spirital journey to help her find herself and a place in the world. She must overcome an abusive relationship and find her own sexuality. This book helped me realize things about human nature and also myself that I never knew were there. The emotion that is protrayed by each character, especially Celie, will leave you speechless. Definitely one of the best books I have ever read.

Alice Walker's The Color Purple is a captivating novel that shows the life of an African American female. The main character, Celie, loses her mother at the age of 14. Her father rapes, abuses, and gets rid of both of her children. Then he sells her off to a man that doesn't love her and never will. This man beats her and the only way she refers to him is by Mr. He deprives her of her sister, Nettie, who was the only person that truly loved her.

Mr.'s mistress, Shug Avery, comes to live with them. She reveals to Celie that she is unique and that she can be her own person. Celie learns what it is like to love someone and what it is like to be loved back. Once Celie realizes that there are things out in the world better for her she decides to leave Mr. He is then faced to realize that Celie is more than just a possession, she is a person. She is now able to call him Albert. In the end of the book Celie gets her sister Nettie back and her two children.

The characters teach each other many values that you can use everyday. This book is great and I think everyone should read it once in their life. It can help any person in the world.
