I-Bots was a fun book to read. It stayed within the boundaries of the Asimov universe. It was an exceptionally action oriented book which sets it apart from other books in the Asimov universe. I found it to be a quick and enjoyable read. I liked it so much, I read it in one night. The book has well developed characters. The plot was well thought out with many exciting twists and turns.

I am new to working with feral cat populations. This book has really educated me about this element of our society. There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding cats in general, and this book helps dispel the rumors. Example: cats are killing off the bird population. In reality, humans do more in killing birds with their cars and disruption of habitat than cats. Another example is that these cats are sick. In reality, when a colony is cared for, their incidence of disease is no more than the pet cat population. There is so much we can do to care for ferals besides mass execution. We would never consider a round up of racoons, wild turkeys, deer or possum and execute them. Why do we think it's okay to do it to cats? This book offers a sensible approach to learning how to live along side these wild animals.

Peggy gave me this book, autographed to my children, in 1996 when we went to the same church. I didnt know then what a big difference this one book would have to us. It actually improved our love of books. Its been my children's favorites ever since and its held up through 3 childrens' handling and reading. The story is colorful, imaginative and everyone loves it! I'm so proud of her books, especially this one, that has continued to warm our hearts even after 4 years of reading it frequently. If you want a book that will endure years of reading and enjoyment, the kind of book that gets passed down in the family.. this is the one to get. You will treasure this one always, like we do. LESSONS FOR THE UNWIRED FUTURE...FROM THE WIRED PAST
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-15
We've come a long, long way since an American by the name of Perry M. Collins first envisioned a world interconnected by an overland telegraph line. That was back in the 1850s, and despite the efforts of over a decade - as well as the commercial might of Western Union - the efforts to make Perry's vision a reality were rendered obsolete by the completion of the Atlantic cable in 1866.

If the nineteenth-century transition from unwired to wired was spectacular in its social, political, and economic consequences, the twentieth-century move from wired back to unwired is proving even more remarkable. Just as a "telegraph army" was deployed by Western Union to take the overland telegraph line up to British Columbia, through modern-day Alaska, and so toward Siberia in order to connect America with Europe via Asiatic Russia, so today a wireless horde is spreading its unplugged message like wildfire in ever-decreasing circles of influence.

John Dwyer's meticulously researched book serves as a trumpet-blast for modern society's undying technical ingenuity and sheer passion for "connexity"... No one who operates in today's digital environment can fail to be fascinated by his tale of how these men surveyed, explored, and operated in dangerous - sometimes even life-threatening -environments to build the line from 1865 to 1867, only to find those risks made unnecessary by history.

Maybe those risking their capital and reputation on wireless technologies du jour like Bluetooth and WAP would do well to heed the lesson in TO WIRE THE WORLD, which is that technical vision alone isn't enough: the history of technology has also to be on your side!

A Pilgrim's Guide

One of my own meaningful pleasures in life is to visit those places that represent some personal or historical improtance in my life. While many such places include train tracks or a large rock in the woods or a particular church in Slovakia, meaningless to others, many others include the public squares of much of modern history. Charles Bridge in Prague is a favorite, as is Westminster Abbey in London. Places of importance for so many saints and sinners and in between. The value of this little book about Lewis is, to people like myself, obvious. Our connection through the page needs to be extended to the place. Lewis, whose writings have inspired our lives with magic and devotion, has also taught many of us the value of the particular. Through the particular we come to the universal. "There are no trees, only this Elm." Put another way, he teaches us the value of place and physicality.

For those American readers who have been to England it is clear that the island is the landscape of dragons and queens. Each page of this book is filled with those little details that tease us a little more and draw us closer. Filled with photos and maps, it contains VERY detailed descriptions of Lewis' old haunts, along with clear maps and suggestions for daytrips or overnighters. Even if you are not planning on going overseas, this book is a really unique addition to your Lewis collection.

You will also enjoy "Jack" by George Sayer if you are interested in Lewis' life. Two fantastic photo collections with descriptive text are "Through Joy and Beyond" by Hooper and "C. S. Lewis: Images of His World" by Kilby. Enjoy!

Ethics in Health Care

Although this is a short book(205 pages) it provides an excellent background for learning about ethics in health care. Using situational narratives, Perry takes the reader through real life situations where ethical standards have been violated resulting in disturbing consequences. At the end of the book, she provides follow-up for each case and describing the tracks left by those violating ethical standards. Perry includes practical advise for how to convene an ethics committee and how to implement ethical standards in health care organizations and professions.
In short, this is a very practical book, and one that should be read by everyone desiring a career in a health related field.

Grimshaw is one of the great larger than life characters of English church history. It appears that he was not the only vicar to have the errant whipped into church attendance. This guide gives a good biography and as with others in this series, a helpful guide to visiting the area where Grimshaw lived and preached. I found it to be a fascinating account of a very human man who lived to see the gospel proclaimed. He had a remarkable ministry transforming a parish church with few attenders into one where thousands would come to hear him preach. The book also has fascinating historic insights into such things as a parish posse pursuing the father who has abandoned the mother of his illegitimate child so that she would not be a burden on the parish and of public church penance for fornicators.

The Treasure of Our Heritage is a delightful story, mostly because it is true. As a decendent of Sam Via (by adoption) it is amazing to see through the eyes of the one who lived it, just what life was like in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is truely a "treasure" to have such a history in ones background. It is also a treasure to have such a close family. No matter what your own personal hiustory, this book is a great read for anyone who values history itself.

Spiritual and Metaphysical Insight - in themes and texts
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 1998-10-15
This book might well have been be re-named 'An Anthology of the Spiritual Life.'

In brilliantly classified excerpts, chosen out of the immense total of man's spiritual heritage, skillfully arranged so as to throw into relief each other's truth -- and their common truth -- as an evocation from their very contrast, the book is creating a synthesis of mutual corroboration.

In the sequence of a spiritual quest, the extensive quotes from the many Christian mystics, from an Islamic genius to a Hebraic comment, from sayings by Tibetan sages to a Taoist message, and by the 'naturist' vision of the Red Indian Master are all presented, all interlocked in a method of cross-references in which an over-all sense of unity is maintained. With its extraordinary index of sources, the book is the nearest thing to a whole religious library compressed between the covers of a single book. Nothing appears to have been left out or be missing.

Awareness is documented throughout all the pages of this book, as keys used at different stages of the Way to unlock the gate of Unitive truth, transcending distinctions of religious form. Its author can bear witness to an ultimate truth: that by living his own form faithfully and intensely a man will live all 'other' forms by implication.

This book gives testimony by those who had opened the 'heart's eye' throughout the spiritual history of mankind. In it, one finds a fertile source of reference and inspiration.

Although the author primarily had in mind the man or woman of serious spiritual intent, it may be of service to historically or academically minded students just as it may come as a manual, handy to equip oneself for meeting with others who are like-minded from all parts of the world, to all advocates of religious understanding at an oecumenical level.

In Switzerland in 1973, shortly after its first publication, I had the opportunity to find and read through this book. My own copy has remained a personal treasure.
