this is a remarkable anthology filled with truth, inspiration and wisdom for children and adults alike. EXCELLENT testimonies regarding the mutually beneficial healing powers of volunteer work.
it is my philosophy that what we love to do, instructs us as to what we are here to do, and what suffering we endure, instructs us on who we are here to help once we've healed. this can be seen over and over again within the 45 short narratives of people who have transcended their personal tragedies by helping others through similar pains.
the concept and goal of this book: to successfully match readers with services/volunteer work most compatible with their personality, strengths/weaknesses, and passions, is a noble one. i was especially pleased to read, "this book provides no pecking order to the available causes to serve, because there shouldn't be any"
and gail johnston stays true to her words by showcasing the value of a wide variety of volunteer experiences from passing out pencils, to building homes, to providing medical care, to singing, random acts of kindness (prepaying a stranger's cab fare), to the actual founding of non-profit organizations.
no act of service is too small and all acts of service result in the benefits described at the beginning of the book: "...mysterious, spiritual belssings that can't be seen or measured but that surely enhance our well-being and quality of life"
like the author, i too am a survivor of eating disorders, and like the author also, i found that my healing and return to happiness and health is in large part thanks to the willingness and ability to move away from mass media influenced micro-self-consciousness and toward the much more important things in life: reaching out and helping others.
3/4 of the way through this book, my comment to my children was this: "we share the planet with some truly amazing people." -and i am most proud and grateful to have my own volunteer testimony and the tri valley haven in livermore, included in the social cause diet.
the world owes gail johnston a big thank you! for the time, work, effort and accomplishment of this most inspiring anthology. i'm sure the humanitarian benefits will manifest quickly and multiply for years to come.
it's "pay it foward" in action not theory.
and an all around great read, after read, after read...

As a professional in the underwater survey industry, I often recommend this book to those new to the industry, or just joining our company (Triton Elics International) no matter what department. As a Naval Sonar Technician, this book was required reading for all involved in shallow water search and survey operations,as well as being used as a source for training purposes. Sound Underwater Images is a comprehensive text book on Sidescan Sonar data acquisition and interpretation for the amateur as well as the professional surveyor. From basic underwater acoustics to advanced sonar record interpretation, Sound Underwater Images is one of the few texts I refer to again and again.

Just managed to get a copy, and it is well worth the money I spent. As an avid food historian, this document being made available is invaluable to determining the cultural influences in the modern chinese humoral theory of food as medicine. I plan to spend many hours both finding many of the rare ingredients and recreating the foods as part of my studies.

This book is a must have for anyone with interest in the Big South Fork area. The historical value contained in the pages takes one back through time to the earlist people to inhabit the region. Strong documented evidence along with local oral history leaves you wanting more.

The cover probably does not do this sensational book justice in reaching its target audience. The cover design of this book makes it look like a program you would pick up at a travelling carnival and like the book only appeals to kids. Whilst this book is definitely very kid friendly and would be a great present for children it is also a great book of facts for adults. There are plenty of great photographs and sketches some even from classic movies. I had no idea that Mary Shelley only came up with the idea for Frankenstein because she was playing a game with a group of friends during a lightning filled stormy night where they competed against each other on who could tell the best horror story and debated if lighting could start a life, since they knew it could end it. This is just one of the many interesting facts contained within.
This sensational book is an excellent introduction to the horror world for any beginner reader as well an excellent source of horror related trivia for the serious horror fan. Topics covered include ghosts, UFOs, zombies, the undead, psychic powers, superstitions, poltergeists, Halloween, werewolves, vampires and so much more.
Other good books on these topics are - Encyclopedia Horrifica: The Terrifying TRUTH! About Vampires, Ghosts, Monsters, and More, Creepy Stuff, Ripley's Believe It or Not! Encyclopedia of the Bizarre (Ripley's Believe It or Not!) and the brilliant Informania: Vampires.

MASH meets Star Wars. All the sadness and tragedy that goes along with a war-time medical unit tempered with the humor and lightness needed to make it through unscathed. Mix in the fantasty elements of The Force and The Jedi and this is a 2 for 1 book that I read in just three sittings. Characters you empathize with and fight for. A mystery unraveling. These stories have a lot to offer, but are a really quick read.

The Fickling/Hinton series of Adventure gamebooks are notoriously difficult for the reader to solve, and this one is no exception. But, as ever, the artwork is brilliant (although, sadly, this is the weakest in that department, the pages being just a little too cluttered), and the puzzles are again very cleverly done. However, as a science-fiction work this book falls just short of the mythologies of the other three (10 Doors of Doom, Helmquest, Path of Peril), creating a universe that works, but doesn't quite feel as well-rounded as the others. But, that said, as with all of this series, if you can get into it and stay the distance, these are some of the most rewarding puzzle books around.
