Very Useful Resource - Career Exploration/Job Entry
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-07
When I picked up this book, I was planning a career change with a goal to work in some sort of therapy or counseling setting. But, I wasn't sure - what is the difference between psychology, counseling and social work, with respect to my goals? I had read some books on psychology jobs, and some on social work jobs, but none had addressed this. I picked up this book, which gives a great discussion about different types of counseling careers, and found that it specifically compares and contrasts counseling to social work, psychology, and psychiatry. I found this EXTREMELY useful in defining my education and career goals. The book also discusses job titles, responsibilities, outlook, salaries, education, certification, and licensing for many different types of counseling jobs. Highly recommended for anyone exploration careers in counseling or related fields!

An in depth look at late 19th century China missionaries
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1999-05-27
Often books of this type either make a saint of the missionary or a sinner. This book hits a balance in the humanity as well as the humility (and sometimes lack of humility) of these three pioneers in Christian missions in the northern province of Shandong in late 19th century China. Stands alone as almost a classic in the field. Their problems as well as victories are well stated and make one want to read more of the people and period. Especially to learn more about the Chinese of that time.

35 years later ..

This book is a real eye opener. 35 years later and we're still debating the same issues. Little progress has been made in solving the problems associated with air and water pollution, and growing world population. "No other species has had man's ability to alter the environment. Nor has any other species ever had such destructive environmental impact on a world wide scale. The combined result is a fast-moving population explosion, together with rapid depletion and contamination of the resources on which our species depends."

"We have not learned prudence, and this may be our downfall. We have risked modifying our environment, even contaminating it, without knowledge of the effects."

These words could have been written yesterday. The future still depends on the choices we make.

This is an excellent book. It's wonderful for teens and adults alike, and is a quick read. Bill Perry is an expert in wildlife. He worked with Ansel Adams, helped to set up the Rock Creek Nature Center which was used as a model for other nature centers around the country, and he helped plan parks around the country.

"Book provides insight into family, Southern Appalachia....What began as curiosity as a child about his forebears has culminated in a valuable contribution not only to Youngs everywhere but to anyone interested in the history of the Southern Mountains...While there are many pages of meticulously documented genealogy, fascinating stories fill the book with entertaining material that will interest even non-Youngs, although according to Young, `If there's a family in the Mitchell, Avery, Yancey, and Madison area that we are not related to, I've never heard of it.'" --Michael Joslin in the Johnson City, TN, Press

Joy Franklin, editorial page editor, in the February 1, 2004, Asheville Citizen-Times: "A remarkable genealogy that resulted from 45 years finding answers to his questions...But it is much more than a genealogy. It is a book filled with stories and documentation that tell the intensely personal and human side of the history of a region and how it evolved...in many ways, it is superior to a work of fiction. The people are all real and the stories are all the more compelling because of it....Our Young Family is a handsomely bound book that was published by Archer Blevins, one of the many relatives Young met while researching his family's genealogy...If your family has been in these mountains for many generations, you may well find some of your relatives among the many extended families represented here. Whether or not that is the case, anyone interested in the history of Western North Carolina will find this a wonderful resource."

Keen insight into why outdoor play is a significant
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-16
In Outdoor Play: Teaching Strategies With Young Children, research coordinator and teacher Jane Perry provides the reader with keen insight into why outdoor play is a significant (yet frequently overlooked) aspect of a young child's emotional, social, and physical development. Perry analyses play within a framework of "initiation, negotiation, and enactment", showing how teachers can effectively support self-directed pretend play. Perry's superbly presented text also connects and illustrates theories of play and children's culture. Outdoor Play is very strongly recommended for students of child development, playground supervisors, and preschool through grade school classroom teachers.

The aircraft feared most by the Viet Cong

I was an aircraft mechanic in the service. Worked on the Mohawk in VietNam. The aircraft was totally awesome. My pilot came back from a mission one day white as if he had just seen a ghost. When asked, he replied that he had just out maneuvered a surface to air missile. It was at this time that I realized how much I appreciated the opportunity given to me to have a part in the VietNam war. The OV-1 may have been phased out, but the memories I have of working on and maintaining the aircraft will stay with me for a lifetime.

Since the main preparation for "handling life" should come from one's parents, and professional counselors can deal with only a limited number of families, some type of "training school for parents" is needed.

"Parents Take Charge!" has been developed to offer basic principles for sound parenting in a practical format, using both Scripture and time-tested data from the behavioral sciences. The lessons are arranged in thirteen chapters and can be adapted for use in the home, in small study groups of parents, or in classroom situations. Workbook material is included to help parents improve in understanding and practice.

The most complex, but the most daring.

Review Date: 2004-02-11
Of the David Fickling and Perry Hinton series of adventure gamebooks, this is perhaps the most puzzling on first glance. A series of beautifully drawn pictures and seemingly random shreds of a diary are lain before the reader after only the briefest of introductions, setting out the world which this takes place in. But don't be fooled - this may not have the pick-up-and-go nature of 10 Doors of Doom or Helmquest, but this is a masterful piece of work. As the reader begins to unravel the plot and realise exactly what is occurring, then the story and the mythology it creates becomes epic, and the sense of achievement is tremendous. Fickling and Hinton were daring in that they apparently refused to put the answers at the back of any of their books, which makes sense given that they aren't very long in terms of pages, but can make them rather impenetrable. But if you can tap into the book, I guarentee a magnificent experience.

Interesting History of the Armed Citizen Army
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-29
A characteristic of the revolutions that began with the American and French revolutions in the late 1700's was that the revolution was conducted largely by citizen armies. Basically armed citizens overthrew the governments then in force.

The Chinese revolutions beginning in 1911 with Sun Yat Sen, and continuing through the communist takeover in the late 1940's likewise had as their basis an armed citizen army. Shortly after taking power, the new governments usually then began a program of disarming the citizens because they wanted to prevent another revolution. China has, however retained the 'Worker Militias' as a way of continuing the 'revolution.' This was the basis of the 'Cultural Revolution.'

This book is a history of the workers militias in China from their first organizations in the late 1800's through today where some of them are actively protesting the comunist led government.

There is a lot of discussion today about China becoming a major players for the next century. It is hard to correctly predict what will happen, but if the worker militias are unsettled, this could be the foundation for another revolution.

There are also interesting parallels between the Chiness workers militias and the National Guard in the United States and the more loosely organized unofficial militias.
