"We have not learned prudence, and this may be our downfall. We have risked modifying our environment, even contaminating it, without knowledge of the effects."
These words could have been written yesterday. The future still depends on the choices we make.

Joy Franklin, editorial page editor, in the February 1, 2004, Asheville Citizen-Times: "A remarkable genealogy that resulted from 45 years finding answers to his questions...But it is much more than a genealogy. It is a book filled with stories and documentation that tell the intensely personal and human side of the history of a region and how it evolved...in many ways, it is superior to a work of fiction. The people are all real and the stories are all the more compelling because of it....Our Young Family is a handsomely bound book that was published by Archer Blevins, one of the many relatives Young met while researching his family's genealogy...If your family has been in these mountains for many generations, you may well find some of your relatives among the many extended families represented here. Whether or not that is the case, anyone interested in the history of Western North Carolina will find this a wonderful resource."

Interesting History of the Armed Citizen ArmyReview Date: 2006-03-29
The Chinese revolutions beginning in 1911 with Sun Yat Sen, and continuing through the communist takeover in the late 1940's likewise had as their basis an armed citizen army. Shortly after taking power, the new governments usually then began a program of disarming the citizens because they wanted to prevent another revolution. China has, however retained the 'Worker Militias' as a way of continuing the 'revolution.' This was the basis of the 'Cultural Revolution.'
This book is a history of the workers militias in China from their first organizations in the late 1800's through today where some of them are actively protesting the comunist led government.
There is a lot of discussion today about China becoming a major players for the next century. It is hard to correctly predict what will happen, but if the worker militias are unsettled, this could be the foundation for another revolution.
There are also interesting parallels between the Chiness workers militias and the National Guard in the United States and the more loosely organized unofficial militias.
