In Outdoor Play: Teaching Strategies With Young Children, research coordinator and teacher Jane Perry provides the reader with keen insight into why outdoor play is a significant (yet frequently overlooked) aspect of a young child's emotional, social, and physical development. Perry analyses play within a framework of "initiation, negotiation, and enactment", showing how teachers can effectively support self-directed pretend play. Perry's superbly presented text also connects and illustrates theories of play and children's culture. Outdoor Play is very strongly recommended for students of child development, playground supervisors, and preschool through grade school classroom teachers.

The aircraft feared most by the Viet Cong

I was an aircraft mechanic in the service. Worked on the Mohawk in VietNam. The aircraft was totally awesome. My pilot came back from a mission one day white as if he had just seen a ghost. When asked, he replied that he had just out maneuvered a surface to air missile. It was at this time that I realized how much I appreciated the opportunity given to me to have a part in the VietNam war. The OV-1 may have been phased out, but the memories I have of working on and maintaining the aircraft will stay with me for a lifetime.

Since the main preparation for "handling life" should come from one's parents, and professional counselors can deal with only a limited number of families, some type of "training school for parents" is needed.
"Parents Take Charge!" has been developed to offer basic principles for sound parenting in a practical format, using both Scripture and time-tested data from the behavioral sciences. The lessons are arranged in thirteen chapters and can be adapted for use in the home, in small study groups of parents, or in classroom situations. Workbook material is included to help parents improve in understanding and practice.

Of the David Fickling and Perry Hinton series of adventure gamebooks, this is perhaps the most puzzling on first glance. A series of beautifully drawn pictures and seemingly random shreds of a diary are lain before the reader after only the briefest of introductions, setting out the world which this takes place in. But don't be fooled - this may not have the pick-up-and-go nature of 10 Doors of Doom or Helmquest, but this is a masterful piece of work. As the reader begins to unravel the plot and realise exactly what is occurring, then the story and the mythology it creates becomes epic, and the sense of achievement is tremendous. Fickling and Hinton were daring in that they apparently refused to put the answers at the back of any of their books, which makes sense given that they aren't very long in terms of pages, but can make them rather impenetrable. But if you can tap into the book, I guarentee a magnificent experience.

Interesting History of the Armed Citizen Army

A characteristic of the revolutions that began with the American and French revolutions in the late 1700's was that the revolution was conducted largely by citizen armies. Basically armed citizens overthrew the governments then in force.
The Chinese revolutions beginning in 1911 with Sun Yat Sen, and continuing through the communist takeover in the late 1940's likewise had as their basis an armed citizen army. Shortly after taking power, the new governments usually then began a program of disarming the citizens because they wanted to prevent another revolution. China has, however retained the 'Worker Militias' as a way of continuing the 'revolution.' This was the basis of the 'Cultural Revolution.'
This book is a history of the workers militias in China from their first organizations in the late 1800's through today where some of them are actively protesting the comunist led government.
There is a lot of discussion today about China becoming a major players for the next century. It is hard to correctly predict what will happen, but if the worker militias are unsettled, this could be the foundation for another revolution.
There are also interesting parallels between the Chiness workers militias and the National Guard in the United States and the more loosely organized unofficial militias.

This is a very popular children's book in Japan and I am very happy that now there is one in English as well. It is a very simple book with a very good lay out to get baby's attention. My 4 months old absolutely loves it. Get it - you won't be sorry. I highly recommend it.

Great Kit for Vacation Bible School!

I have chosen this kit to use for VBS at an Episcopal church. It comes with a planning guide, plus teacher guides for little kids, older kids and youth/adults. There are plenty of choices for crafts to go with each lesson. We were thrilled to find this program that is clearly bible based. No junky items have to be purchased with it (such as toys, baseball caps or special decorations - if you've been searching, you KNOW what I mean!). The materials you need can be easily found. Also comes with two game boards to use during group activities. It's a big plus to be able to include adults as well as kids so everyone can talk about what they learned. Although this product comes up in the 'book' list, it's a whole lot more!!!

Book # 23 of this Space Opera continues the first huge story arc, which began in book # 21 "The Cosmic Decoy", and concludes in Book # 41, "The Earth Dies".
These mega-stories are called "bands" in the original German. This band deals with the first true encounter between the fledgling fleet of Terra and the might of the galactic empire.
Cadet Tifflor, who escaped from the Springers in "episode" # 22, now faces even more peril. Rhodan sends the mouse-beaver, Pucky, to "Snowball" - the icy planet where Tifflor and what remains of his crew are awaiting rescue. Pucky has his usual brand of 'fun' with the Springer ships looking for Tifflor - with the expected result of the Springers moving away from the ice bound world. Tifflor and his band of mostly cadets of the Space Academy must remain behind on Snowball as a sort of rear guard. Pucky remains behind as well, just in case the Springers get the bright idea to return while the Terranian fleet is off on another mission. Rhodan learns why the Springer agents are undetectable to his Mutant Corps - they are robots!
Next "episode" - Number 24 - "Infinity Flight".
I've never been this impressed by a series. I'm reminded of old cliffhanger serials like "Buck Rodgers" or "Flash Gordon" when reading these marvelous books. This series is still being published in Germany and is now well over 2,000 stories. It's too bad American publishers stopped after only about 120 books. I had to learn to speak, read, and write German in order to continue reading Perry Rhodan.
This book contains another editorial, another science fiction movie section, and another letters column. There are also extra stories - one continuing adventure, similar to a serial, and some "Shock Shorts" - continuing a series of SF short stories at the end of each book. Although these stories have nothing to do with Perry Rhodan, they are worth looking at.
It's well worth reading the entire Rhodan series.

Comprehensive text for dental hygienists on periodontology!

In the past, editors watered down their texts for dentists and served them to dental hygienists. This textbook has always considered the dental hygienist a central focus in the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease. I have used this text as a reference for my CE courses and studies, but also for my patients in order to understand grafts, implants and other aspects of treatment that sometimes are not fully explained my practitioners. This area has expanded so much in new technologies that I am already looking forward to the next edition.

Joy Franklin, editorial page editor, in the February 1, 2004, Asheville Citizen-Times: "A remarkable genealogy that resulted from 45 years finding answers to his questions...But it is much more than a genealogy. It is a book filled with stories and documentation that tell the intensely personal and human side of the history of a region and how it evolved...in many ways, it is superior to a work of fiction. The people are all real and the stories are all the more compelling because of it....Our Young Family is a handsomely bound book that was published by Archer Blevins, one of the many relatives Young met while researching his family's genealogy...If your family has been in these mountains for many generations, you may well find some of your relatives among the many extended families represented here. Whether or not that is the case, anyone interested in the history of Western North Carolina will find this a wonderful resource."
