Brooks/Cole, Thompson Learning.

This CD is an introductory exploration of earth science topics, including physical geology, historical geology earth science, earth systems science, oceanography, environmental science, and meteorology.

It contains interesting, entertaining interactive activities with simulations and animations in each chapter. The activities instruct about the topic. Then the student clicks on the homework assignment for the topic and answers questions about what was learned in the activities part. Some of the questions are interactive multiple choice, others are essay questions. There are windows where the student can write out essays, or notes, and print them out. It is very easy to click back and forth between the activities and the homework, and between the Table of Contents and any of the chapters. The topics include: weather and climate, the Earth's layers, geologic time, volcanism, waves, tides and currents, ground water, the rock cycle, atoms and crystals, earthquakes and tsunamis, and plate tectonics. This CD is an educational work of art.

The CD Table of Contents opens as ten circles which you click on to access each chapter:

Oliver Temple's book is a must-read for anyone who would understand the causes of the war and the nuances of the issues of abolition and secession (Chaps. 8 and 9). Written by a contemporary of those events (published in 1899), it provides invaluable insight into the "feelings" of the participants on these issues; insight that is usually lost in the passage of time. Temple's discussion of secession in Chap. 9 is particularly valuable in refuting the argument in defense of legal secession. A personal letter from Robert E. Lee to his son in January of 1861, denouncing secession was particularly enlightening.

The rapidly developing liberalization of the energy markets takes many diverse directions in the different countries and continents. The editors F. Sioshansi and W. Pfaffenberger aim at a comparative study of these developments in order to draw some conclusions on what is going well and where there are disadvantages for the different players. In the foreword the editors point out that there are several market studies available but this volume represents a concise, systematic and up to date comparison on a worldwide basis to identify working and not working market models.

The book is an important contribution to the fact that electricity sector reforms have significant potential benefits but also carry the risk of large potential costs if the reforms are implemented incompletely or incorrectly. This book represents a broad and very valuable overview of the liberalization processes and regulatory models in different electricity markets throughout the world. The documentation of this experience represents an important contribution to improve the existing markets and to control the future development in the right direction. Lessons learnt from errors in the past may help to more efficient solutions in the future. The editors' aim to provide a complete and objective comparison of different electricity markets has well been achieved. The book provides a well-founded source for future analyses and studies. In this context, the numerous references of books and papers provided by the authors are most helpful.

A must for researchers in quaternary geology, physical geography, and the like. Compiled by British geoscientists who like to throw an occasional a in front of the letter e (see title), but we can forgive them for this. Extensive bibliographies provided for most entries...for a change. If you're an earth scientist or student in need of the right words to describe 'the end of the world as we know it', then this one is your best bet.

Thora attempts to Escape!

In book 15 of this Space Opera, we're in the middle of a short quartet of adventures on Venus.

Thora, beautiful Arkonide military commander, finally cracks her icy veneer in order to return home. She steals a spaceship and travels to Venus, home of the only giant positronic brain in the Sol system, in the hope that she can use information from that computer to return to Arkon. But she has problems, and is eventually captured by the few survivors of the ill-fated rebels against the new power's attempt to get to the Venusian base in "Venus in Danger".

Thora has several adventures in the steaming swamps of Venus, similar to the previous book, before her eventual capture by the rebels. John Marshall, Rhodan's main telepath, also finds that there is a semi-intelligent life-form on Venus - a colony of animals resembling Terran seals. The story continues in #16 - "Secret Barrier X".

I've never been this impressed by a series. I'm reminded of old cliffhangers like "Buck Rodgers" or "Flash Gordon" when reading these marvelous books. This series is still being published in Germany and is now well over 1,800 volumes. It's too bad American publishers stopped these after only about 120 books. I had to learn to speak, read, and write German in order to continue reading Perry Rhodan.

This book also contains another editorial, and another science fiction movie section. There is no fan letters page in this volume. Well worth reading the entire series.

A Chilling Voice from the Past
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-15
Eugenics was more than a pseudoscientific fad of the early 1900s: it provided much of the philosophical underpinnings of the Nazi master race and its logical culmination in the concentration camps. Today its ideas lurk more subtly behind such movements as birth control, abortion rights, euthanasia, and cloning. So, this book by GK is far more than an historical curiosity; the arguments he sets forth enable us to see far more clearly the dangers of conceding to a government, a group of elites, or even a vague movement, even a fraction of our rights and responsibilities concerning our own life, death, and progeneration. In the first third of the book, GK utterly dismantles the superficial logic of eugenics. In the second third, he exposes the real objectives of the movement that lay beneath the surface. The final third is a compilation of truly bone chilling articles and letters written by eugenicists of the period. Essentially, GK believes that the movement arose out of the capitalist desire to maintain cheap labor and the socialist desire to scientifically organize society. His analysis of these seemingly opposed forces has a heavy political, social, and historical focus, and is surprisingly light on religious considerations. He foresees that eugenics unleashed would result in an utterly inhuman society. Unfortunately the Nazis proved his theory. He foresees the dehumanizing effects of even a more moderate eugenics, which unfortunately has come to pass and is quite evident in the monstrous plight of our poor, homeless, mentally handicapped, and unborn. How do these social horrors occur? GK believes that most people are right, but dont know that they are right. Thus theywe--are susceptible and even defenseless to attacks by an organized group of activists driven by malevolent or merely foolish motives. This book shows how that actually played out in pre-WWII Europe, and gives us a better understanding of how it is happening now, and how we might reverse course.

Very nicely illustrated. You can tell that this is a re-telling of Pilgrims Progress but thankfully it's not over-worked as such. Instead of being heavily loaded with allegory, it is a delightful story for children. I loved it.
