This book should be required reading for anyone involved in the scientific side of the cosmetics industry. I would've loved to have had this book when I first started out, and it certainly helped to fill in the gaps that I didn't have in my training as a cosmetic chemist. This book is very easy to read and the study guide is a helpful tool as well.

In Belle Moskowitz: Feminine Politics And The Exercise Of Power In The Age Of Alfred E. Smith, Elisabeth Perry presents an impressive work of biographical scholarship on the woman who was four-term Democratic governor of New York and unsuccessful presidential candidate, Alfred E. Smith's closet political advisor. Bell Moskowitz (1877-1933) was the most powerful woman in Democratic party politics during the 1920s and served as Smith's strategist, public relations director, and campaign manager. She was also a major force in shaping the social welfare programs for which his gubernatorial administration is best remembered for today. A well-crafted feminist biography, Belle Moskowitz showcases a pioneering female activist who achieved unprecedented influence in American politics, only to fall into an undeserved obscurity. Belle Moskowitz redresses that historical oversight and is a very highly recommended contribution to women's studies, American political history, and feminist biography collections.

Two great things about this book, my son and I try something new every trip, and we spend lots of time together. Would love to meet this author because we feel like we know him from the way he writes. Knows what he's talking about! Taught us how there's a new fishing experience to be had everyday. We knew zero to start, but this book made it easy to get going. Now we catch fish all over, and I know what's up with my kid. Good book. If you're itchin' to take your kids fishin' you should check it out.

This is a book that should have never been taken out of print. It is a great guide for the young preacher in how to prepare and present his sermon. It is easy to read, has helpful suggestions, and offers many good tips for preaching the best sermons possible. PUT IT BACK INTO PRINT for the next generation.

Michael Perry's essays are some of the best pieces of writing I have read. His insights always ring true and his words dance across the page in a rhythm that is never disappointing. I'm hoping this author will have more for me read.

Abeles, Frey, and Jenks use a very mechanistic approach to biochemistry. Whereas most traditional texts use a survey style approach to biochemistry, this text uses chemical concepts to teach the reader ways to approach a wide range of problem in chemical biology and ways to reduce problems down to molecular interactions. This is a great resource for chemists branching out into biology, but very different from texts used in biological disciplines.

Beautiful Swimmers, Part Two

The place is Swans Island, at the mouth of Blue Hill Bay, Maine. The island has many anchorages. There is a pond, and cobble separates it from the ocean. Island tides are violent ones, consistent with the tidal conditions of the Maine coast. Tide must be consulted in every activity of island life. In a fishing community road frontage doesn't matter, shore frontage does. Gulls clean the fish from the wharves. The climate of the island differs from that even a few miles inland. Autumn is the island's season.
European fishermen probably frequented the island at an early date. In the island's history, there is an aboriginal, an Indian, era. A great plague, 1618-1619, destroyed three quarters of the population of the Maine coast. Penobscots and Passamaquoddies visited the island. The first white settler was Thomas Kench, a fugitive. Kench stayed for twenty years, until 1796, when he moved to the mainland. Next David Smith settled on Swans. He was a true patriarch. During eighty years he had five wives. Settlement on the island began as the proprietorship of Colonel James Swan of Boston. Swan built a mill to saw his lumber. He built a manor house. Residents of Swans Island generally bear one of eight names. The islanders have a highly developed sense of independence.
The first extensive commercial fishing was for cod. Then, for years, mackerel was caught there by hook and line. Around 1870 the use of hook and line gave way to seine fishing. The Swans Island mackerel fleet was very productive. (Before mackerel there were the menhadin, porgies.) Subsequently lobster and herring fishing yielded significant catches. The enemy of the seiner, used for herring fishing, is fog.
The coast of Maine has came to be dominated by the lobster industry. (This volume reminds the reader of BEAUTIFUL SWIMMERS by Warner, a book about the crabs of the Chesapeake.) Whereas lobsters range from Delaware to Labrador, south of Kittery lobsters are not subject to commercial fishing. Lobstering has brought great prosperity to Swans Island.
A Pennsylvanian grew amazing begonias as a commercial enterprise from 1920 to 1945 on the island. Seaweed was mixed with the island earth to nourish the plants. Many goods can no longer be bought on the island. When the book was written in 1958 lobstering had become a sort of monoculture. All of the other occupations were excluded. Earlier islanders had collected cobbles and quarried granite to be shipped away.
Boat troubles are endemic to the islands because boat connections are so important. As far back as the Civil War Bar Harbor was a summer resort. It vied for distinction with Newport. Some of the tombstones memorialize mass drownings. First there was a Baptist Church on the island. It went into decline as did the congregations established by Methodists and Adventists. Ministers do not stay long. Governance is by annual town meeting. Swans has a few summer residents who live in their own cottages and are the frugal sort. The account of the island has interest and charm for the reader.

African-American folk art, and more specifically the twenty African-American folk artists of this book, were the subject of a large traveling exhibition which began at The Corcoran Gallery in Washington, and traveled across the country for the next 15 months, in 1982-3. This beautiful and in-depth book is lavishly illustrated both with plates of the actual art works, and photos of the artists. There is much painting and wooden sculpture, and also mixed media pieces. In addition, biographical material is presented with great respect and focus. The authors are committed to promoting a deep understanding and appreciation for their subject, Black American Folk Art, and succeed. John Beardsley's essay, "Spiritual Epics: The Voyage and the Vision in Black Folk Art" discusses funerary art, and is both moving and erudite. A wonderful book.

I bought this several years ago at a large bookstore. It is full of beautiful, engaging, high quality photos and imagery with poetry and writing to enlighten and move you through the pages. Images cover black african hair from about the early 1900's up through the 1990's. A positive and enlightening book to have or give as a gift to women who wear their hair naturally. I don't regret purchasing this book and I never tire of it. (smile)
