Book Meets Needs of Church Leaders Who Face Antagonism
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-27
This book is an excellent analysis of the problem of antagonism in the church and should be read by all church members and church leaders who face the problem. It analyses the problem and gives excellent advice to members and leaders alike. Antagonism can destroy a church and its results are often very far-reaching and very long-lasting. If the principles that are outlined in this book are followed the damaging effects can be significantly limited. A must-read for church leaders.

Rethinking the Anti-Slavery Movement
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-18
This is book does a fantastic job of compiling a wide variety of new historical essays that look at the anti-slavery movement.
For generations historians dismissed the abolitionists as crazy or too militant, etc. In the 1960's a new generation of historians started to rethink this position. Produced long after this first wave of "neo abolitionist" historians, Anti-Slavery Reconsidered shows how far Abolition Studies has come.
Read this book alongside the 60's classic "The Anti-Slavery Vangaurd", and the contemporary classic "Prophets of Protest" (2005).

The thought of formal verification is dry at best. But in reading Applied Formal Verification the processes are re-introduced and focused on as fresh, clear cut practices. The examples are flawless and well delivered. A great read whatever your level of knowledge in D/I.

This is a book not just for Atlanta residents, present or past, but also for anyone interested in history, or in remembering a simpler time. From the small-town roots described here, Atlanta has grown into a major metropolitan city. Learn the origins of the top-secret Coca-Cola recipe. Go behind the scenes at the premiere of the classic Gone With the Wind movie in Margaret Mitchell's hometown. Definitely worth the price of admission.

Provides Complete Resource on Art Tx. with Older Adults
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-09
July 1, 2004 - Art Therapy with Older Adults: A Sourcebook, edited by Rebecca Perry Magniant, is the first comprehensive text on creative arts therapies with older adults. An innovative and complete resource on using art therapy techniques with the elderly, the text offers a wide range of ideas and practical information, ideal for those within the field and those who are seeking an introduction.

The nonverbal approach used by art therapy is innovative and effective as a treatment modality, particularly for the elderly - one of the fastest growing segments of our population. This book demonstrates that art therapy is a unique offering for persons aged sixty-five and older, and gives the potential for enrichment and healing in those lives.

About the book:

Art Therapy with Older Adults: A Sourcebook presents case studies and interventions using arts therapies approaches in working with the older adult population. Creative arts therapists will find the text to be a useful resource, while other clinicians, such as those in social work, teaching, psychology, gerontology, and counseling, will find this to be a comprehensive introduction to the field.

The book is divided into three sections: interventions and ideas for working with older adults; working with specific older adult populations; and case studies of individual client work. Also included in this volume is a comprehensive recommended reading list, which lists hundreds of references in the field.

While other texts in this area are limited to one specific aspect of the population, or focus solely on "diversional" or "recreational" aspects of care, Art Therapy with Older Adults: A Sourcebook is a comprehensive sourcebook for clinicians in this growing field. The volume encourages the reader to use the suggested concepts or tailor them to one's own specific working environment or population.

From the back cover:

"A rich compendium of articles on art therapy with older adults, this book is a valuable resource for both art therapists who work with elders and administrators of programs for the elderly. Further, the ideas, interventions, and case examples it offers make a strong case for expanding an effective and low-cost service to more members of our increasing (and currently underserved) elder population." Frances F. Kaplan, DA, ATR-BC, Faculty, Art Therapy Department, Marylhurst University and Editor, Art Therapy: Journal of the American Art Therapy Association

"An inspiring view of aging portrayed through sensitively written case studies, heralding the use of art as a potent form of therapy. Each case is a testimony to the value of artistic creation to help facilitate honest and meaningful personal expression. Perry Magniant aptly demonstrates how art therapy is a powerful vehicle for change and reparation for older adults. A guidebook filled with wisdom, creativity and enlightenment." Deborah Farber, MPS, ATR, Chair, Art Therapy Department, School of Visual Arts of NYC

About the editor:

Rebecca C. Perry Magniant, ATR-BC, is originally from Columbia, Missouri. She is a graduate of The George Washington University and former Director of Art Therapy at Goodwin House West in Falls Church, VA. She has lectured on various topics in the field of art therapy and has taught in the field. Mrs. Perry Magniant now resides in Paris, France.

An Outstanding Work of Biblical Astronomy
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-07
This wonderful work was written in 1908 by solar astronomer E.W. Maunder, discover of the "Maunder Minimum" of the solar cycle, an indisputable scientist with impeccible credentials and accomplishments. This book demonstrates that Professor Maunder was also a man of deep Biblical faith, and a scholar of Scripture.

In this book, Prof. Maunder discusses the many Scriptures that refer to the night sky, and provides considerable historical and observational information. Unlike typical science works today, Prof. Maunder presents solid science with an abashed devotion to the truth and authority of Scripture. There is none of casual dismissals typical of the contemporary secular science mainstream. Nor are there any trite creationist appeals typical of contemporary Biblical writings. And neither is there any discussion at all of this mystical "Gospel in the Stars" nonsense that was no doubt very popular during Prof. Maunder's early life.

The only possible quibble a Christian reader today might have is that Maunder is a bit sketchy when discussing the "long day" of Joshua. His explanation remains true to the Biblical account, but attempts to put a bit of rationistic whitewash on the matter, rather than embracing the sheer miraculousness. But Maunder does point out what the Biblical text actually says and doesn't say, leaving a certain amount of room for interpretation.

Prof. Maunder's book is an excellent read, especially for amateur astronomers, telescope enthusiasts and others of Christian faith who are already experienced at observing the sky.

This look into the world of a Fifties Insane Asylum is gut wrenching and superb.

That this autobigraphical rendering was rescured from destruction is a testament to journalist and finder Perry Aayr to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude.

In case you're wondering, it is aptly titled.
