getting your masters in aesopic folklore?

This book assumes a working knowledge of both Latin and Greek. The introduction is in English; the rest of the commentary is in Latin. The fables, life of Aesop and sayings of Aesop overlap in Greek and Latin. I was once hanging out at a monastery library and I stole into a dark closet where many old books donated by dead priests and nuns were piled up in boxes waiting for kingdom come. In one of the boxes (once belonging to a nun) I found a Greek reader that was published and inscribed in 1904. In the book were many Aesopic fables which I felt were quite satisfying. It's too bad that you can't find simple non New Testament Greek readers like that today. Aesopica is my favorite book. If you are looking for a cheaper alternative check out Babrius and Phaedrus published by Loeb Library, ISBN 0674994809.

An excellent book for educators or new African Lit. readers.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1999-09-03
This book serves as a very useful tool for educators who would like to introduce junior high or high school students to African-American literature. The anthology also works well for anyone who is looking for an interesting compilation of important writers. The discussion questions following each entry are very well written and the biographical introductions are a nice touch (especially since the authors are so interesting). The book begins with an insightful introduction by Nikki Giovanni and then outlines African history in American. The anthology entries are divided into themes, which focus the reader's attentions and thoughts.

Against the Gates of Hell
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-05
Against the Gates of Hell is an inspiring revview of the life of a Christian missionary serving in Turkey from the 1860's to the end of that century. The devotion of Henry Perry to the salvation of the Turks and Armenians where he taught, preached, established schools, hospitals and orphanages, during which time death claimed 5 infant daughters and his wife, is beyond under-
standing in the modern era.

While American missionary societies supported hundreds of doctors and missionaries who labored in the face of overwhelming aggression against the Armenians, Western world powers ignored the horrible slaughter of innocents by a dying Ottoman Empire,
The author documents the story with clarity, insight and specificity and brings to life events of 150 years past.

Aikido through the eyes of its American exponents.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2002-01-13
I bought this book with no hesitation when I saw it advertised in Aikido Today Magazine.

I have been living and training in Japan for the past six years and am always very interested to hear the opinions and stories from the multitude of instructors here. Although I am very happy to be here in Japan training under an amazing Sensei, after reading the interviews in this book, I no longer feel that to find 'true' Aikido you must travel to Japan. I have come to realize that the Aikido being practiced in America is vibrant, alive, and growing quickly.

This book is a collection of interviews with some of the more widely known Aikidoists in America and I recommend it without reserve, to anyone interested in North American Aikido.

I would also like to encourage the editors to publish a collection of conversations with the Japanese Aikidoists. I'm sure that it would be as beneficial as this book.

I read this review in the Times-Picayune Newspaper on February 6, 2000:

"Algiers Point is at its best when Perry shares insider dirt on how policing works. It's a bit like watching an episode of "COPS", narrated by a cop who no longer cares what his boss thinks." - Richard Sine is a reporter in the West Bank bureau.

Two Great Aliens Novels
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-23
Steve Perry has done a wonderful job taking the horrible beasts of the screen and comics into novel format. Though these books dont have as much aliens as the movies, when they do it is horrifiying and great at the same time.

Instead of getting one book at the time just get the omnibus edition. This one, comtaining Earth Hive and Nightmare Asylum (which are the first two)has Wilks and Billie fighting the hordes of aliens as Earth is being taken over by the beasts.

In all two great novels.

All Things Bright and Beautiful is an excellent book. The story line was clear and easy to follow. The art work is similar to the name of the book...bright and beautiful. You will enjoy reading this book to your children.

A good resource book for Episcopal altar guild trainees
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1999-02-17
Although dated in its perspective, this little book is a gem of information. It has a great deal of information packed into it. The reverent and practical aspects of altar guild membership are addressed. It gives suggestions for guild by-laws, prayers, and a very nice glossary. I wish it had more diagrams, including altar linen care, but for the price it's a bargain.
