I'm Partial Becuase I Learn best from this Author

From rent houses to computers (and even to raising a handicapped child to give him room for the most potential in Disabling America ISBN #0785262253), I just am floored every time I read another book by this guy.

Does he write 24 hours a day?

Is he a genius on ALL subjects?

Again, maybe I'm partial to his writing style or something, but let me say THIS book once again too my fear out of Office.

Oh I could do all the usual word processing and e-mail. But when it came to formatting my husband's Excel worksheets or using Access, I was stumped until Perry showed me how in under 24 hours. What I like best about this book's examples is that they are not these huge business-world examples with tons of data. His examples are single worksheets and small databases such as the ones I'd create for myself and my family. And if I had a business, I would want to start small so I learned the fundamentals and then work my way up to bigger projects.

Once again, I am indebted to this author. I strongly encourage you to read Teach Yourself Office 2003 in 24 Hours if you want to learn the REAL tricks and tools that help you do your daily computer tasks.

Perry is perhaps the leader in computer book writing

He keeps doing it. Every few months, another title is written by this Greg Perry. He's the Issaac Asimov of computer books! What, has this guy written 100 or more? I don't know but it seems like it.

What gets me is that he keesp writing quality books, ones that I go back to reference, and between the lines he keeps a sense of humor to boot! Try to find THAT in a computer book, even a wishy-washy Dummies book the humor is often forced.

If you used previous versions of Office but you upgraded to 2003, you might not think you need to read a book. Sure, Office 2003 is a cosmetic upgrade more than anything, but it's not fully one and this book is your KEY to making the most of the new version.

It will NOT throw tons of material you'll never use. It won't throw fancy spreadsheets and database examples at you, it shows you how to make real ones to get the job done.

I liked this book as it deals with the main character being in a wheelchair. I couldn't put it down, great reading.

Another great story in the Flanagan series

Home from Iraq and seriously wounded, Luke Marino is in a wheelchair and sure his life is over. His men are going into battle without him, and he blames himself for his injuries, feeling he let his squad down. Luke is so depressed he has given up, sure he'll never walk again. He even refuses to do the physical therapy he needs so badly. All he wants is to just be left alone.

Enter Mary Kate Flanagan Donnelly, a widow with two children. She dated Luke in high school, and he's her first case as a physical therapist. She needs this job, and she's determined not to let Luke run her off. Mary Kate doesn't let him get by with a thing, but the more they clash, the more she realizes she's thinking about him in a personal way.

Maybe it's because I'm so proud of our men and women in uniform, but Luke Marino and his struggles against overwhelming odds gripped my heart. I always enjoy Marta Perry's Flanagan series, but this one was special.

Statistics Explained

Excellent Introductory Book

Professor Hinton's book provides the reader with the best and clearest explanations for potentially difficult subjects such as Types I and II errors, the meaning of the sums of squares in ANOVA, and the interpretation of Pearson's R in regression. Those are topics that many beginners find hard to grasp. If you have learned "how to do" Statistics but are not sure you understand the underlying concepts this book is for you. If you need a theoretically sound review of basic Statistical concepts, at the same time as readable as possible, this book is for you too. Professor Hinton has an incredible way of explaining hard topics in crystal-clear, easily understandable detail. He does not take anything for granted. Even those afraid of Statistics may find pleasure in reading Hinton's book - the pleasure that comes from thoroughly understanding a concept. This is the second edition of a great book.

Interestingly enough, if you go to Professor Hinton's Oxford Brookes University website you will see that he is not listed as a Statistics Professor. According to the website he is responsible for managing the Institute's portfolio of undergraduate modular programmes in Communication, Media and Culture; Early Childhood Studies, Education and Human Development; English Language and Linguistics; Performing Arts; Philosophy; Religion, Culture and Ethics; Sports and Coaching.

Not the typical Statistics author. Certainly not the typical Statistics book. Highly recommended.

A great Stats resource!

The only topics missing from this book that I wish had been discussed are validity (concurrent, longitudinal predictive, diagnostic) and item analysis (difficulty and discrimination indexes). A few pages are devoted to reliability, but I would have liked to see more detailed discussion devoted to the differences between the types of reliability measurement (test-retest, split halves, and parallel forms reliability).
These minor points aside, this book is a wonderfully readable and not at all intimidating introduction to statistics. Highly recommended!

Outstanding book for any supervisor or leader.
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1998-01-10
MGen Smith uses his vast leadership and management experience in the military to provide real-life examples of the many and varied situations any leader encounters. Even though most of his experience is related to the military, virtually all of what he has to say applies to any type of business or organization. The book is broken down into logical chapters and concludes with some excellent checklists to help address a variety of situations. It makes an excellent book for a new manager or supervisor. In fact, I recently appointed a new supervisor and I loaned him my copy to read. If he uses half of what he learns from the book, he will be successful. Definitely one of the best and most straight-forward how-to books about leadership.

I have rewritten and updated Taking Charge. It has a new title. Rules and Tools for Leaders. It was published in 1998 and ever since I was interviewed by Katie Curic on the Today Show on 23 February 1999, Rules and Tools has been selling like hot cakes. Even made #2 on the amazon.com best seller list--briefly.

This is a delightful and insightful book that is well researched. It has very interesting background on many place names and gives the reader a new understanding on why we have such odd names for many of our towns, etc. I am sure that the same kind of explanations may be applied to place names in many states, not just North Carolina; therefore this book is not just for North Carolinians!

I borrowed a friends copy while scrapping and I can't wait to get my own copy in the mail from Amazon. The titles in here are fresh, upbeat and entertaining. In some of these title books you can find a lot of the old, run-down, used 'one-too-many-times' titles... you WILL NOT find that here. It's easy to use wihtout too much side talk. The tips features here are excellent as well. This is a book I can't do without... it saves me time and energy!! And buying it from Amazon, it saves me a few dollars rather than getting it from a local scrap store.

This book is such a terrific source of titles. Sure, I could think up stuff myself, but with time at a premium, it's much easier to find one in this book. I highly recommend it to any scrapper who uses titles on their pages. The tips are clever, too!
