I loved this book. The adventures happened on an island in Maine like ones near where I live. Mrs. Katherine says the twins can keep a treasure of "enormous value" that is hidden in her house, if they can find it! There is lots of excitement and a surprise ending.

This is a great book! It is so instrumental in helping children become bilingual. The "silly" story kept the children engaged as the learned. I was so impressed that I bought one for each of my nieces. Kudos to Jackie for writing it. We look forward to the next book.

The term "icebreaking" often brings to mind uncomfortable questions and activities used at business meetings and conferences. This book is the exact opposite! It is packed with original, fun questions to break the ice and stimulate conversation. Further, it is not designed with the business world at its sole audience.
These questions are just as applicable to strangers at a conference as they are to best friends who have known each other for life. The questions in this book can be used as journal prompts, small group activities in a classroom, conversation starters at the dinner table, or as something to pass the time on a long car trip. While the questions may seem light and random at first, they offer an opportunity for further examination once they are answered.
This book is not filled with any extraneous text. Rather, it gets straight to the point and jumps right in to the questions. The questions are separated into chapters (or "rooms", as they are referred to in the book). These chapters include such subjects as entertainment, sports, home economics, psychology, and religion, making it very easy to go straight to the types of questions most applicable to the individual situation. "Icebreaking 101" is a book that takes the discomfort out of people getting to know each other, or of getting to know themselves. This is a fun, enlightening book that anyone would benefit from checking out.

Excellent story, this is one of those books you can't put down, it leaves you on the edge of your seat. In Perry 3 brings the reader back in time to the excitement of the frontier days of iron mining in the upper midwest. Lots of exciting surprises.

In Perry 3 is set on the rugged frontier of the iron ranges and pine forests of the Upper Midwest. Action begins in the 1870s and 1880s and concludes in present day. It is a leisurely paced tale of secretive, get-rich-quick entrepreneurs: how they scheme, how they are foiled by more ruthless scoundrels, and how their mundane secrets remain hidden until unearthed by an old hunter more than one hundred years later. The story includes extortion, suicide, arson, and murder. Action takes place in the forests, mines, frontier villages, and in big-city home offices of the mining company. Emphasis is on people--good, bad, and in between--and their relation to their environment.
A young victim, daughter of the head schemer, is drawn into danger by the plotters. Inadvertently, she leaves behind several poignant clues that help modern-day, though amateur, sleuths unravel most of the long-buried mysteries.

(...)Each page has several photos, plus colorful artwork, giving lots to look at again and again. I love the Sepik Iwam words at the top and bottom of each page: they make it fun for kids to write messages in "code". The front of the book has a short pronunciation guide, so we can even speak a few simple words in this language that is so strange to our ears. The short rhymes on each page march through the English alphabet, telling the life story of missionary Marilyn Laszlo as she arrives in a remote village in Papua New Guinea, learns their language, and translates the Bible for them. There's even a suggested activity for each letter-page, so this book has lots of ways to entertain kids while exposing them to a new culture. Highly recommended!

Highly recommended for family, Sunday School, and Bible School library picture book collections, A Is For Airstrip: A Missionary's Jungle Adventure was written for children by former Wycliffe Bible translator Marilyn Laszlo with the assistance of Elizabeth Maddrey and Lindap Perry. Enhanced with almost 70 photographs from Marilyn's adventures in the jungle of Papua, New Guinea -- where she lived in a remote Hauna Village for 25 years, learning the local language, crating an alphabet, and translating the Bible for this tribe on the Sepik Iwam River. More than just another ABC primer for preschoolers, A Is For Airstrip features bi-lingual pairings of native words and their English equivalents, wonderful anecdotes, and activities that will fully capture the attention of young readers.

Just came back from Isla . Used the map all the time. Not only was the map accurate but the additional info was extremely helpful. It lists restrurants, lodging, ferry times and even good tours. An example , they talked that the navy base store had good prices on liquor and they were right on the money. I would completely trust all of their advice.
The best way to experience Isla Mujeres is with this map!

Though there are a couple of "maps" available and Isla Mujeres is usually covered a page or two in Cancun travel guides, the Can-Do Guidebook in a Map provides more useful information plus the best map over anything else available. It folds to fit in a pocket and is great for exploring by golf cart (the preferred family travel mode on the island). References and recommendations are all good. The whole island is covered, plus other nearby attractions. My only complaint is our copy blew away and was lost (don't leave it on the seat of your gold cart)!

No question about it; this 44288 guy is right up there with the greats. Not only do you get one [great] story in Islands In Time and the three previous books in the Some Die Mad quatrain, you get your epiphanies, your apotheoses, your enlightened madnesses. You get your streams of consciousness and interior monologues. You get your unreliable narrator and fractured time lines and multiple points of view. You get a whole lot of sex both sacred and profane. You get long segments as good as literature can get written by anybody from anywhere and at anytime. Why this book and the whole Some Die Mad series is an artistic tour de force. This guy ought to posthumously get a nomination for the Nobel Literary Prize from somebody. The whole series sure as hell qualifies for a gold prize from somewhere. Sheer freaking genius. I really wish I was a book publicist....

This book will certainly be a challenge to all who read and apply. The direction is clear and the lessons are sobering. As we grow into adulthood, many forget the basics in which we are to treat others and how that results in other's response to us. With the pressures of the high energy sales environment it is a great cornerstone to rejuvinate the selling spirit.

Jacqueline Kennedy Through a Different Prism

As one of the most charismatic and intriguing women in modern American history, Jacqueline Kennedy has been the subject of numerous books, articles, and even made-for-television movies. Those attempts, however, focused almost exclusively on Mrs. Kennedy's aura of celebrity---until now. Enter Dr. Barbara Perry, the Carter Glass Professor of Government at Sweet Briar College in Virginia. In "Jacqueline Kennedy: First Lady of the New Frontier," Perry does an outstanding job of telling a familiar story from a scholar's perspective. She provides a highly readable, yet serious examination of Jacqueline Kennedy in the White House.
In researching the glamorous and sometimes enigmatic First Lady, Dr. Perry states that her mission "was to write the first scholarly treatment of her [Kennedy's] work as first lady and filter out the extremes of previous books that range from hagiographic tributes to mean-spirited or sensationalized accounts." That mission was a particularly daunting one in that Jacqueline Kennedy's personal papers and oral history, located in the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston, remain closed. Not to be dissuaded, Dr. Perry apparently did exhaustive research into virtually every available primary source. The result is a fascinating, insightful look at a first lady who emerges as a surprisingly assertive, independent, and even bold actor on the White House stage. Jackie, of course, is best known as the driving force in the restoration of the White House, but she was equally influential in the creation of the White House Historical Society, the preservation of Lafayette Square, and support of the arts. Her personl correspondence on these projects is quite revealing, suggesting that she had a clear vision of how the White House, the presidency, and the first family should be presented to the public---and how she attempted to preserve and present her own identity. Professor Perry is especially effective in exploring this area, having previously authored a compelling analysis of the symbolism and imagery of the U.S. Supreme Court and how the court presents itself to the public (see "The Priestly Tribe: The Supreme Court's Image in the American Mind").
Barbara Perry's work is a much-appreciated scholarly addition to the body of literature on Jacqueline Kennedy. Until the Kennedy papers are opened to the public (in about 40 years), it will stand unchallenged as the definitive account for viewing and understanding an American icon inside the White House.

Unlike more gosspiy biographies, political scientist Barbara Perry approaches the life of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy as a scholar. She writes about the early influences in her life, her role as first lady and the passions and causes that she undertook in her official life. Perry touches on such issues as JFK's infidelity and deftlly handles the criticism leveled at Mrs. Kennedy for, among other things, her spending on her wardrobe and her "francophile" attachments. So while the book doesn't get bogged down in the tawdry details of their personal lives, neither does it ignore them. It's a well-written, well-documented account of a White House that was so different than any other in modern times -- much due, in part, to the youth and flair of Jacqueline Kennedy. For those who want an objective account, this is an excellent read.
