A rare find both as a book and as a true storyReview Date: 2006-07-10
I accidentally ran across a battered old copy of this book at a rotting mountain lodge, tucked among other dusty, abandoned books. Thankfully, I was just bored enough to begin reading it. It only took a few pages to hook me.
At the time, I had recently become disabled. Before my disability, I was physically fit, and I had a successful career, for which I had struggled to obtain a doctoral degree. I was newly married. Suddenly, life was no longer what I had planned, and I had a hard time figuring out why I should continue with this "new" life.
This man, in a similar position, faced even greater disappointments. Yet, he found meaning for his life and helped others live what life they had left with joy and purpose, all under extraordinarily difficult circumstances.
I resist using the "politically correct" name for the disease that is the subject of this book; I prefer to call it "leprosy," for two reasons. First, I don't think that word has the religious and social stigma it once had, at least not here in the U.S. Second, calling it "Hansen's" disease, after the doctor who identified the bacteria that caused it, seems to have had the unintended effect of imparting the belief that "science" has leprosy under control and that no one suffers from it.
Incidentally, there is still no cure for all leprosy types, and its damage cannot be repaired. Although, the bacteria that causes leprosy was discovered in 1873, exactly how it is "caught" or communicated among people is still a debated mystery. Some argue that leprosy may still be contracted in the U.S., and it most certainly still exists in many places around the world. There was a leprosy colony here in the mainland U.S. and one Hawaii. The "new" remedies used in the 1920s, discussed in the book are still partially in use, although improved today. So, the factual story is also still current, as well as the message.
If you need a reminder, as we all do at times, that life can be full of purpose, love and joy no matter what curve ball life pitches -- then this is a simply written story that will indelibly embed that notion into your heart.

Can't recommend it highly enoughReview Date: 2006-09-25
The beginning of the book explains, in the most wonderful plain English, why and how your metabolism starts shifting as you age (and a lot of it has to do with the mechanics of storing fat and water). It an interesting and informative (and relatively quick) read. The middle section outlines the diet program and three phases, and the back half of the book are recipes to get you started. The beauty of this diet is that you can modify what you normally eat, rather than spend a lot of time buying or preparing "program" foods. It is based on balance and portion control and what provides a good calorie burn.
I can't figure out why this book ever went out of print. It should be on every woman's shelf.

Valuable firsthand account of Who's last two seasonsReview Date: 2003-01-07
Mike Tucker, her collaborator of this work, was the visual effects designer during Doctor Who's dying days. He too provides his point of view and remembrances with equal aplomb.
In each of her nine stories (Dragonfire, Remembrance Of The Daleks, The Happiness Patrol, Silver Nemesis, The Greatest Show In The Galaxy, Battlefield, Ghost Light, The Curse Of Fenric, and Survival) she provides vivid commentary and detail from her diary of her experiences. There's lots of behind the scenes photographs in B&W and colour, early design sketches, listings of the cast and production team, director, story number, number of episodes and date broadcast--it's pretty comprehensive.
And yes, the famous incident of her while shooting Battlefield is included. Basically, she was in a water-filled tank and was to be pulled up. Sylvester McCoy noticed the glass bulging and then... CRACK! Sylvester shouted for the crew to lift her out, which they did, before anything happened to her. She also tells about this in the More Than 30 Years In The TARDIS video.
Considering how she was one of the few ex-alumni of Who to come out in the More Than... video, it shows how much she loved the show. She was very heartbroken when Sylvester McCoy told her that there wasn't going to be a 27th season, and that too is included in the book.
At the end of the book are photos and text of some of her post-Who efforts, including More Than A Messiah, an episode of the Stranger, the short-lived Colin Baker series, and Shakedown, a Who-spin off that not only featured the return of the troll-like Sontarans but paired her with Carole Ann Ford, Dr. Who's first ever companion. Then there's an interview where she tells what her favourite story was, plus her favourite Doctor. I have to commend her on her answer--she has good taste.
This is a splendid companion-piece after watching any of the 7th-Doctor/Ace stories. If you can find this book--get it. Break through hoardes of Daleks to get this treasure.

Very informative bookReview Date: 2003-03-20
"The Anatomy of Russian Defense Conversion" touches on many more subjects then just Russian Defense Industry. This is a very thorough, informative and important work that analyses the history of US and Russian Defense Industries, weapons exports and conversion, and possibilities of transformation from a militarized to a civilian economy in the new millenium.
The book also reflects on the current state of defense industries in the US and Russia, and "brain drain", or loss of intellectual capital in Russia and other countries after the Cold War.
I found reflections in Arkady Yarovsky's chapter "From the Culture of War to the Culture of Peace" very contemporary, especially in the light of recent events in the Middle East:
"Our time is unfortunately still characterized as "the culture of war." The culture of war is evident first and foremost in the hostilities between people and states, between nations and faiths, and in the inability to solve conflicts by peaceful means... Humanity has made it into the third millenium because the lust for power has been restrained by fear of nuclear war, but this restraint is not to be counted on permanently... The danger hidden in the separateness of people of different countries, unfortunately, remains a legacy for the next century... If humanity renounces the legacy of the culture of war, it can start down the road of cooperation, peaceful creation, and enlightenment. This is the only road leading to the culture of peace."

A Subject of Mutual InterestReview Date: 2001-02-12
This book tells of the enormous cost to the Russian people of building and maintaining their war industry for so many years, a militarized economy where people got second best. Since the breakup of the Soviet Union, defense industry just about shut down, but civilian industry has not grown great enough to support the population. There are horrendous unemployment, and terrible health and social problems. There is some danger that the path of least resistance for Russia, if we neglect the situation, could be to re-start weapons production, for export at first.
In my opinion, the United States also, to a lesser degree, has neglected the manufacture of quality consumer goods, importing them instead, and has let its physical economy deteriorate, despite much activity in the financial sector. We, too, have been insufficiently careful of the environment. This book provides some idea of what these trends could lead to, if carried to extremes.
Perhaps the involvement of United States companies in Russia, could lead to more of a recognition here, of the importance of the physical economy. Hopefully, both countries could also work to put industry on a healthy environmental footing as well.
There is awareness of the problem of Russian defense conversion, at high levels of our government. I hope this book helps educate people and sustain that interest.

Excellent history.Review Date: 1997-10-29
Perry, a seasoned Wall Street Journal political writer, recounts twelve such disasters, from the French and Indian Wars to Mogadishu; such prime example of arrogance, poor planning, and stupidity that they should be required reading for student-officers everywhere. A highly readable trek off the beaten path for military history buffs.

Brilliant Look at Civil Religion in the SouthReview Date: 2000-05-18
Wilson argues that this civil religion was a combination of Christian and Confederate symbols. According to Wilson this civil religion was formed out of Confederate ministers attempts to reconcile defeat in the war with the Will of God and (as the ministers believed) Confederate righteousness.
Significant in this study is Wilson's look at the role that White Supremacy played in this civil religion. He looks extensively at the role of racism as embodied in groups such as the KKK.
All in all, the work is a brilliant look at ideas pervasive in the reconstruction and early modern south, ideas which have been influential in formation of the modern New South.
An Extraordinary Eye-Opener!Review Date: 2002-04-06
Baptized in Blood is well worth the reading of anyone who seeks to understand the post-civil war period, and/or the social and political psychology of the American south.
