Peggy's cookbook is a treasure. My daughters and I have had loads of fun trying the dishes--our favorite so far is peanut butter cookies. The directions are clear and easy to follow, the vignettes and photos priceless. The fare is wholesome and family-friendly--no nouvelle fusion cuisine scallops poached with apricots and pinenuts type weirdness in here. While other cookbooks collect dust on the shelf, Peggy's stays right there on the kitchen counter. I may have to buy another copy for my eldest daughter in a few years cuz I'm not giving up mine when she moves out!
A lovely book!

This little book's a gem, a sweet throwback to a time before life became so stripped down that food became something you used to impress or a necessary evil.
The author reminds me a bit of Julia Child. Her love of simple food, beautifully prepared, shines through. If you're looking for food that is presentation without substance, this ain't it, but if you're looking for a perfect recipe, beautifully explained, it is.
We're talking true comfort food here -- Baked Corn, Homemade Pasta Sauce, Drop Biscuits. A Sloppy Joe to die for.
Very readable, with vignettes from the author's childhood, it's one of the few cookbooks will be enjoyed equally by those who live to cook, and by those who wander into the kitchen only to nuke some popcorn.
Warning -- be careful who you loan this book to. You'll have trouble getting it back.

This book is a must have for anyone who has a child with dyslexia. When I presented this book to my 9 year old, he showed everyone, he took it to school and read it to his class. What a wonderful way to show the world how life is when you are a child with dyslexia. This author is writing a book from 100% experience and it is a must have. Awesome book for anyone. Dyslexia is a gift, and I think that this book shows the wonderful way a person with dyslexia see's the world.

An ethical precept for zoos

Margodt presents the results of his ten year inquiry into the ethical implications of zoos. He carefully weighs the arguments for and against zoos, without denying the intentions actuating his research: concern about the welfare of animals as individuals, not merely as a species. The book is well-informed, subtly argued, and accessively written. I strongly recommend it to anyone concerned with the question of animal welfare.
Excellent book, at the same time critical and constructive !

I entirely agree with the praise by Jane Goodall, Marc Bekoff, Mary Midgley and Stephen Bostock. Margodt has performed an inspiring act of research. The Welfare Ark is a highly informative and intelligible text that can be recommended to anyone concerned about animal welfare and species conservation. Margodt's writing reflects on biodiversity threats and welfare conditions of zoo animals. Within this framework, he questions the indispensability of zoos. He gives elaborate evidence for his standpoint that zoos must be regarded as a last resort. He concludes his solid argumentation with an innovative proposal to adopt a policy that integrates both species preservation and individual animal welfare in all of its aspects. The Welfare Ark should be deemed very useful as a starting point for interesting debate on zoo related matters. Whatever one's position in the zoo debate, this book contains interesting argumentations and many relevant facts on zoos, animal welfare and wildlife issues!

The recipes compiled, organized and presented in "Western National Parks' Lodges Cookbook" by food expert and travel writer Kathleen Bryant are drawn from the menus of fifteen Great Lodges located in ten national parks located throughout the American West. Superbly presented with full-color photography and historical notations about the lodges themselves, the recipes range from Pan-Seared Salmon Tostatas (El Tovar, Grand Canyon National Park); to Navajo Eggplant (Zion Park Lodge, Zion National Park); to Strawberry-Poppy Seed Shortcake with Grand Marnier Whipped Cream (The Ahwahnee Hotel, Yosemite National Park); to Watermelon, Tomato, and Feta Salad with White Balsamic Vinegar (Timberline Lodge, Mt. Hood National Forest). Each featured and gourmet quality recipe is methodically organized and thoroughly 'kitchen cook' friendly. A fascinating and informative read for anyone interested in America's national park system, "Western National Parks' Lodges Cookbook" is an elegant cookbook that will enhance any family or community library cookbook collection.

Two kinds of people will enjoy Western National Park Lodges Cookbook by noted Southwest author Kathleen Bryant: those who like food and those who don't. It serves up an exquisite reduction of the history of select lodges to perfectly complement the 10 national park entrées along with ravishing recipes and mouth-watering photographic accompaniments. More than a peek at elite chefs' favorite recipes (someone called it "food porn"!), it is a keepsake--a coffee table book that will bring back memories of each park you've visited as though the pictures were of your own choosing.
I stretched out on the sofa and began reading as soon as I got it. The lyrical yet spare style that packs each sentence with sensory images is familiar to more than a million readers worldwide who have "visited with" the author many times through her articles in "Arizona Highways." Bryant's book Sedona: Treasure of the Southwest is the best seller in the town it celebrates. The Four Corners: Timeless Lands of the Southwest follows closely behind and is a favorite of tourists to this part of the Southwest. I rushed to buy Kokopelli's Gift for my nephews to introduce them not only to the magic of the desert, but also to great writing.
Buy three copies of Western National Parks' Lodges Cookbook. One to browse through and collect with your vacation mementos, one to give to someone whose life you want to immediately enrich, and one for unexpected gift needs, like the open-house you're invited to next Sunday.

The definitive book about the men who invented journalism.

HyTurner has given us an amazingly exciting history of the rough and tumble world of New York City newspapers, how they got started and who started them. He recounts scoops, scandals, dirty tricks, sensational reporting of sensational stories, and the lives and careers of colorful men and women who invented all of the techniques for digging up the who, what, where, when, why and how of events from murders to wars. What might have been dry and dreary reading that only a journalism pofessor could care about has been presented as a compelling saga that reads like a novel. If you enjoyed the Orson Welles classic film "Citizen Kane" and W.A.Swanberg's "Citizen Hearst" you will love Hy Turner's beautifully written and scrupulously researched story of the titans of print who once rubbed elbows, and often jammed them in the ribs of their competitors in a short block of downtown-New York's newspaper row.And if you wonder how the Sunday comic strips got their start, Hy Turner has the answer. This book also relates how a shrewd newspaper mogul collected pennies to build the pedestal for the Statue of Liberty, and sold a lot of newspapers. Everyone who reads a newspaper is in debt to the giants of Park Row, and anyone who cares about journalism should read this terrific book.

"When Giants Ruled" quickly involves the reader in the drama of print journalism's most robust era of cutthroat competition. Hy Turner demonstrates a strong talent for condensing the story of newspapers to its essence. He never overburdens you with details, though occasionally I found myself wishing for more. Meanwhile, the reader is often rewarded with new and colorful anecdotes to familiar events in our nation's history. Turner's superb writing skills keep the reader delightfully moving from one page to the next, while sometimes pausing to more fully enjoy the unfolding drama. It is a book that could only have been written by someone to whom journalism was obviously a first love.

Wild Virginia is a unique work that clearly presents information about wilderness areas in the state. I have been unable to find a good source to have on hand when planning trips, and now that I have discovered this book, I am excited to take it along. It is obvious that the authors have been thorough in their research, and have taken great pains to hike and explore every trail they discuss. Their presentation of each area will make it easy for any newcomer to enjoy the wilderness of Virginia.

Wild Virginia is the ultimate hiking guide to one of the most beautiful states in the eastern US. Whether you're looking for day hikes or extended trips, this is the guide for you. This book not only offers an informative overview of hiking in the wilderness areas but also provides a description of each trail in great detail. If the authors state that the trail curves sharply to the left or there is a fork in the trail, you know it's there. The maps are also true representations, making this guide essential while planning at home or hiking on the trail. I can't wait to see their West VA guide!

Photos of birds, berries and bark all bring to our attention the wonder in the small parts of nature that are so often overlooked. At the same time misty waterscapes show the full grandure of the Washington Park Arboretum.

This is a very informative book on the workings of the U.S. economy. The first time I read it, there were some topics that were difficult to grasp. After taking some Jr. college-level economics and finance classes, the book made much more sense. Also, I found it helped me better understand today's economic news. For example, are deficits always inflationary? In addition, Dr. Parks exposes the all-to-prevalent lack of economic theory displayed by our politicians and economic advisors.
