I've lived in LP since I was four i.e 1966, after my dad retured from serving the U.S. Army in Germany. I was suprised to see my old elementary school (Raupp) in one of he pictures; it showed where I spent my kindergarten in Mrs. Huda's class. Teachers I remember from Raupp: Mrs. Avery, Mrs. Zavereese, Mr. Knaggs and the always serious and proper pricipal Mr. Furgeson. I remember evening Dodgeball on "Boy's Night" in the school auditorium/gym. Many memories. Raupp is gone and a new school built where the baseball parks were located. This book really is done very well with all the history of L.P. anyone would want. I may pick it up for the record.

Wonderful Book!!

This was a wonderful compiling of so very much information! The pictures were very clear and crisp in spite of their age. So many memories. I grew up in Lincoln Park as did my mother and I know she would also have loved this book. Congratulations to the people who did all the research. May their good works continue and possibly publish a volume 2.

Live! Don't Diet! contains RECOGNIZABLE and familiar dishes -- a real lifesaver if you're attempting to make lifestyle changes and have children in the house. Recipes are generally fast & easy to follow with non-exotic ingredients you're bound to have in your low-fat kitchen. For those just making the switch to a low-fat diet, this is the way to go. I have a dozen or so LF cookbooks, and this is always the FIRST I recommend to folks moving to Low-Fat eating.

Wonderful recipes--there's no way these are lowfat!

I purchased this book 6/18/98 and began reading and following the guidelines along with experimenting with several of these recipes. My entire family is now eating low-fat (without their knowledge!) and loving it!! My goal is to lose a total of 51 pounds, and as of 8/25/98 I have lost 29 pounds (without exercise!-- I can only imagine if I had stuck with my exercise program!). Already I feel much better, and I would like to give most of the credit to this great book. I am anxious to purchase the follow-up book (Exceed the Feed Limit) but am unable to make this purchase at this time. If you're looking for low-fat recipes that don't taste "low-fat", then this is definitely the book for you. Like Shrimp Scampi? My favorite--try this recipe, you'll never miss the fat. I've prepared entire meals for small dinner parties using recipes out of this book with more positive comments on each dish than I've ever received before -- I never told them that they were eating a healty, low-fat meal until after the dishes were put away! This book has taught me a new way of living, it's not just a "DIEt". I want to thank Vicki for putting her recipes in print. Good luck to everyone who picks up up a copy of this book and has any amount of success with it. Happy, healty eating! Tammy L.

I have never written a review before but felt I needed to after reading this book to my children. This book is a great tool to explain to children how to become a Christian. My children loved the story and we talked indepth about the meaning of John 3:16. Thanks to the author for writing this book. It made a very serious topic easy for my children to understand.

Through creative storytelling, inviting illustrations and the occasional running rhyme, this book parallels a young girl's desire for a trip to a theme park with our opportunity to go to Heaven.

It begins with a young girl, Lola Mazola, begging her father for money to go to Happyland. The brochure tells of a wonderful place with rides, shows, lakes hotels, a water park and a zoo! But her daddy doesn't have the money. He tries to sell a painting so that she can go, but no one buys a painting that day.

The next day Lola goes to Sunday School where her teacher, who is also her Uncle Tom Tweed, teaches the class about John 3:16. He examines the verse little by little from the beginning, answering all the children's questions.

* WHO IS GOD? "He made trees and plants. Bees and ants. And fleas and seas and knees and peas. And bumblebees and chimpanzees." Though we can't see God, He is all around us and He loves us very much.
* WHAT IS THE WORLD? The planet earth and all that it contains, including you and me.
* WHO IS GOD'S SON? is: Jesus. Lola's uncle tells the class about Jesus' birth; how He grew up to be a man, a teacher and a preacher. "He was perfect. Perfectly perfect." Then he tells of Jesus' death and resurrection.
* WHY DID JESUS DIE AND RETURN TO LIFE? "For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish ..."
* WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO PERISH? The teacher talks about Heaven and how it is God's happy land; how it is so much better than here. "It's perfect. Perfectly perfect." "To perish means never getting to go to God's happy land."
* WHY WOULD WE BE PREVENTED FROM GOING TO HEAVEN? "Because we have all broken God's rules in the Bible ... But since Jesus died on the cross, God can forgive us ... Then we can go to His perfect place."
* HOW DO WE GET THIS FREE GIFT? We believe in Him.
* WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BELIEVE? Put your trust in Jesus to cover our sins and believe God wants us to spend eternity with Him. It also means living your life with Him as Lord, seeking to obey His commands.

Finally, Lola's uncle gives the class a sample prayer they can pray along with their own copy of John 3:16 to take home with them.

When Lola gets home, she is still upset about not being able to go to Happyland. That is, until Uncle Tom surprises her with a gift: $100! It's enough for her to go! As she packs her bags, she tells her father it's the nicest thing anyone has ever done for her. He reminds her: "Not quite ..." Her father opens his Bible to John 3:16 then tells Lola again of the gift God gave her: eternal life if she will believe in Jesus.

As bonus features, this book offers a letter to parents at the beginning and notes in the back for the whole family. A certificate is included for kids to sign and date when they choose to believe in Jesus. Finally, a "Now what?" section which offers four practical tips for helping believers grow their faith and relationship with Jesus.

What I Like:This is the first children's book I've seen that so clearly details God's plan of salvation in such a logical manner! I love the step-by-step (inductive) study of this verse. It's beautifully accurate and age-appropriate. The running rhymes and sporadic repetition are fun to read and hear! The illustrations by Glin Dibley are friendly and colorful. Finally, the front and back matter are excellent.

What I Dislike: This is not a dislike, but ... Scripture quotations are taken from the Holman Christian Standard Bible - a version likely unfamiliar to most. It was distracting and cumbersome at times because I've memorized John 3:16 in different, more common versions.

Overall Rating: Excellent

What an awesome journey this was with Pete Lourie. I didn't know anything about the Chaco culture, but after reading Lourie's book, I was inspired to visit. When I got there it was exactly like Lourie had described it. I camped a few nights in the canyon. Lourie perfectly captured the mystery of the place.

After purchasing the PSX game, The Lost World, I was deeply disapointed. I was under the impression that I could choose the type of character that I could have been. I was sadly mistaken. I quickly went on a hunt for some type of strategy guide to help me on my carniverous trek. I found sanctuary in this exact book. I feel that not only did this book allow you to choose the type of character, but it guided you through one of the most difficult games that has been released. It is also a relief to read the humor and realizm that the author use to help you navigate through the difficult terrain. It gives you the patience to think about the circumstances and not just give up. If you are not an avid fan of video games this book is not for you , but the boys at Brady Games did a spectacular job picking this game to pieces. This book did save my gaming desire because I would have given up on the game and on the system. Thanks gentlemen, I loved the book, and now I love the game!!

Here are our national parks
In an alphabet from A to Z,
Places of beauty and wonder
That belong to you and me

If you get to see one tenth of the national parks we have in the United States, then you are ahead of the game. When you go to see a national park chances are that it is something in your neck of the woods or one of the most famous parks, like Yellowstone or the Grand Canyon. In "M is for Majestic: A National Parks Alphabet," writer David Domeniconi and illustrator Pam Carroll touch on what national parks are out there, both big and small, for young readers to convince their parents that the family should go and visit. Today there are over fifty national parks, with new ones being established from time to time, all created with the same idea of preserving forever our natural wonders. More importantly, every one of those fifty national parks is worked into the pages of this book.

The national parks are arranged from A to Z, and before we get that far there is a two page ma p of the country showing you were all of them are, and one look tells you that living in the western half of the country is a big advantage, because that is where most of them can be found. Alaska has seven of them, which are going to be beyond the reach of most Americans, even those living up there. Then again, if you want to talk about a national park in the west, trying visiting the one in American Samoa on the front door of Australia.

That is one of the three parks we see under "A", although officially "A is for Acadia" National Park along the coast of Maine. Acadia gets the main painting, but there is also one of the Flying Foxes (bats) of American Samoa and one of the defining features of Arches National Park in Utah. Yes, there has to be some creativity to account for all 26 letters: "F" is for Kenai Fjords National Park, "Q" is for the Queens Chamber at Carlsbad Caverns National Park, "T" is for Grant Teton, "U" is for the Upheaval Dome at Canyonlands National Park in Utah, and "X" if for Long X Trail at Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota.

The result is a nice little introduction to those fifty national parks, which should spark some interest in young readers wanting to find out more about them and eventually getting to actually go see some of these places. I have made it to one more than ten percent at this point, but my new goal is to get to double figures by the end of this decade (two of them are actually in this neck of the woods, so that would be a start: go back to the map and see what the closest parks are to you). "M is for Majestic: A National Parks Alphabet" is one off a series from the Sleeping Bear Press' Discover America series. This includes "A is for America: An American Alphabet," "E is for Empire: A New York State Alphabet," and "G is for Golden: A California Alphabet."

To anyone who loves chimpanzees: This book is wonderful! The pictures are absolutely beautiful! There are even little bits and pieces about researching chimps in the wild. To anyone who doesn't already love chimps: Read this book and you will!

Stunning photographs, good text
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-02-03
For those who love chimpanzees, MAHALE is the perfect photographic look into their lives. Most of the 160 pages consist of full-page, glossy photographs of chimps and their habitat, taken in the Mahale Mountains National Park in Tanzania. You'll see a contemplative young chimp dabbling his fingers in a mountain stream, five chimps arranged in a grooming line, a female lounging in her day nest, chimps feeding and hunting, nurturing, playing. Much of their social lives are captured within these pages. Perhaps unfortunately, the accompanying text, while well-written and interesting, is overshadowed by the first-rate photography. The text supplies insights into the lives studied here: diet, social behavior, self-medicating techniques, adaptive behavior, and much more. As with most books about chimpanzees, MAHALE has a foreword written by Jane Goodall.

I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in chimpanzees and other non-human primates.

Having always been intrigued by old-fashioned advice and customs, I found this book to be a wonderful read. It's designed to be a step by step self-improvement program for shy teens with a low self-esteem. The author shares caring advice on everything from defining your goals to defining your style to walking gracefully and acting confident. As well, the book includes chapters on taking care of your skin and hair and doing your make-up properly. By sharing many of her own stories and traumas she went through as a teenager, the author establishes a friendly, personal mood with the reader. Although the book appears old and dated, the advice it features is timeless.

An incisive and pertinent history and morality tale.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-11
For a period of three decades Raymond Clary was San Francisco's most persistent defender of Golden Gate Park from those who sought to acquire the land for their exclusive use, to put up and expand buildings on the land, and to convert the land into money-making venues. Because his criticisms of park encroachers were caustic, witty and informed, it was to be expected that he incurred the wrath of those he rebuked. While Mr. Clary's sharp and eloquent voice has been stilled, despoilers of Golden Gate Park continue to clamor for buildings, museums, monuments, sports arenas, and facilities for special groups. The park needs defenders like Ray Clary to keep the land open, free and green for future generations. Though his books could benefit from condensation, they provide San Franciscans with instructions in the care of park environments it would be well for them to read and to heed.

History replete with the excitement of a bygone era.

The Making of Golden Gate Park is one work which must be a necessary reference; this says not only what a park was, or should be; but how it was set out in the beginning to be that special place in time. An interesting look at what created in sand had became a feature of the landscape of memories. Mr. Clary was a fantastic researcher with greater powers of understanding than even his public knew, envisioning how the park should look way into the future, many planners over the years borrowed his sentiments freely and grafted their public policy onto his outlines. One benefit being the Golden Gate Headlands National Park, an outgrowth of his promotion of open space for city-dwellers idea. Oddly enough, although he was praised by Herb Caen and much was done to preserve open-space, the main concept for conservation of this unique park as a very special and individual place aside from time has been consistantly resisted by every city and county functionary over the last 30-years!
