Cool book on cool weather campingReview Date: 2003-02-20
This book is great fun. I have lots of winter camping books and do a fair amount of winter camping. Other books may have more information, but none covers all of the basics with as much humor as this one. I do alpine skiing and snowshoeing so the coverage of tele skiing wasn't of particular interest...but I still really enjoyed reading those sections, too.
It is hard to describe the authors' irreverent approach while dealing with serious (life and death) topics, but they somehow pull it off. This is really a great book to engage someone who isn't already a hard-core winter camper...so if you are, buy it for your significant other (assuming you haven't been able to get them enthused about spending a winter weekend outdoors.) If they don't enjoy this book, you may officially give up on them.

Boy Genius: An Epic of the ContemporaryReview Date: 2005-10-16
Mr. Park, if you're reading this, I recommend that you get it into the theaters; each message or theme in the book is not only to stand out in the book but should stand out as a "matter-of-fact" to the population.

Two thumbs upReview Date: 2004-09-27
First of all, both of this author's books are worth reading, and they should be read as a pair. I would recommend reading "Las Cucarachas" and then "Boy Genius," in that order. I was born and raised in New York City, and I'm from approximately the same generation as the main character in "Las Cucarachas;" to me it's incredible how well the author brings to life what my own childhood was like, growing up and hanging out in the streets of New York- not desperately poor, but poor enough so that the kids from what was called the "middle class" seemed rich by comparison, and were luckier than any of them ever seemed able to see. It's as though the author lived this NYC childhood, with all its obstacles, frustrations and pains, freeze dried it, moved on in his own life, and then went back to it and set it down exactly, precisely, missing nothing, not a single thought, feeling, experience or idea. You read "Las Cucarachas" and you experience the raw, real life of a tough, smart street kid in a big city where money is everything- absolutely, totally everything- and where the kid knows that it's not that society wants him to fail; rather, society is so completely and profoundly indifferent that it can't even be bothered to have an interest in his success or failure either way. Nobody from any middle or upper class background can ever truly know the alienation this situation creates, but by reading "Las Cucarachas" they can sure get a good goddamn taste of it. "Las Cucarachas" is the story of a boy that's forced to gear everything around slickness and toughness, and who's trying to make something happen against impossible odds and what seems like an endless stream of jerks and idiots holding him back and getting in his way. When I finished reading "Las Cucarachas" I felt a strange urge to contact the author, congratulate him for making it through, and thank him for creating such an honest, vivid, and truly touching testimonial to youth.
"Boy Genius" should be read after "Las Cucarachas;" in fact it's remarkable to me that "Boy Genius" was actually written by the same author. "Boy Genius" is so completely different, and not just the subject matter, but the whole style of the book as well. "Las Cucarachas" is raw and gritty; "Boy Genius" begins right off the bat with fantastic events that continue unfolding throughout. The narrator in "Boy Genius" gets you to suspend your disbelief so completely that I myself often looked up from the book while reading and felt an embarrassed smile on my face, as though realizing once again that I was the victim of this author's ongoing, intelligent, playful mischief. Bringing this together- the surreal storyline, the narrator's ever present, eccentric, hilarious and intelligent take on things- and you've got a book, "Boy Genius," that once again is not only wonderful, honest and real, but that's also simply enjoyable to read... and that's something that's important to me for any book that I pick up! I'm still a New Yorker, and I know I've got a book I love when I can take that book onto a crowded train during rush hour on my way to work- and lose myself in it totally and completely, in spite of the fact that I'm being jostled and crushed by stressed and impatient New Yorkers who'd prefer I put the book away, hold onto the handrail and stare at the ceilings and walls like everyone else. Both of the books written by this author passed my test, and I enjoyed both of them enough to not only recommend them and pass them on (I've lent out both of my copies) but also, to look forward to reading the author's next book too.

Needless to say, I put pretty much everything of myself into the book. Put simply, the book is what it feels like to be displaced and to always long for a place to call home. Thank you to Akashic Books and to all who have supported this book. And please check out LAS CUCARACHAS, my second novel, which is out in 2004.

A hilarious and perfectly paced Candide updateReview Date: 2002-07-30
In this hilarious and perfectly paced Candide update, Boy Genius tumbles the journey from KBS television-star-child-prodigy to east coast street urchin to west coast new economy suit to avenging ghost. Yet the story never succumbs to its (lesser) cartoon possibility, but functions, despite its fantastic plot, within the wound of reality. And it is a wound, a constantly renewed scarification that Boy Genius first discovers, then weeps for, and finally raises a finger to.
A fierce satire which maintains its humanity, Boy Genius is also a unique event in Korean-American fiction. It recasts the confessional prose of assimilation-conflict driven narratives -- via the imagination -- into a scathing accusation of geopolitical corruption as well as a description of the defiance immigrants currently wage in (as they always have) of bricholaging a consistent sense of self. A new landmark in the landscape of Korean-American literature.

"If Dave Reagan liked it, I knew it must be pretty good"Review Date: 2006-10-14
I am a lifelong listener to "Lamb & Lion Ministry" and Dr. David Reagan. When I heard him mention that he liked this little book, since he knows Revelation better than just about anybody, I knew I really ought to read it.
I have studied Revelation all my life, so I can't say I learned a whole lot. I must say I never heard about the secret message in the order of the 12 tribal names (which gave me goosebumps!), but for anyone who is new to Revelation, I will assure you this book is solid.
As a few other said, the way it is organized is the strong suite of this book. If you just want to see how Revelation 'pictures' Christ--read that. If you just want practical daily application, you can just read 'backpack for the journey'. If you only want to learn the terms, you can just do that in each chapter. I love this organization.
I guess what I like the best was how ALL the chapter pictures of Jesus in each chapter form one final message to all His children at the end of Revelation. This shows how AWESOME our God is in the way He reveals secret information for those who know where to look. This makes all the 'Bible code' stuff look pale in comparison.
I would say anyone 15 and older will find this very, very helpful if you are just getting into Revelation. This won't be the last book on it you'll want to read, but it might be your best FIRST one.
"The last book you'll ever need to figure out the last Book in the Bible!"Review Date: 2006-08-21
I was always afraid of Revelation. But when my Sunday School class decided to study it, we realized there aren't many SIMPLE books available for those of us who just want to know what it means minus all the jargon and a hundred points of view.
I came across this book online, but didn't recognize from the title that it was on Revelation. Guess that pretty much shows you how much I knew about the last Book in the Bible, huh?
Anyhow, when I noticed how small it was, and that it was written for teenagers (I'm not one, but my understanding is), I decided to give this book a try.
Let me say that this wonderful little book is perfect for people like me. Every passage in Revelation is explained very simply using the Old Testament to give a sound and solid interpretation.
Every chapter is broken down into 'bite-size' sections explaining the key: words, themes, focus on Jesus, and lessons to take with you. The focus on Jesus sections are alone worth what I paid for the book! Wonderful! Even the hard words are explained very simply, and everything is tied into what's going on in the world today. My favorite chapter has to be 'One Cool Kingdom to Come'. I had never considered what the world would be like after the Second Coming.
Let me say that if you want a very simple, very complete, and up to date explanation of the Book of Revelation, that a teenager, new Christian, or mature adult who is just studying the Book can understand, "Dragons, Grasshoppers & Frogs!" is absolutely perfect. You can read it through in a couple of hours, but you will find yourself thinking about what it says for a long, long time.
"A smashing success....absolutely fascinating!" (Revised review by Dr. David Reagan, 'Lamplighter Magazine', Nov. 2006)Review Date: 2006-11-05
Jerry Parks may have a doctorate in theology, but it has not made him intellectually stuffy, or rendered him incapable of communicating effectively with young people. His commentary on the book of Revelation entitled "Dragons, Grasshoppers & Frogs!" was designed to communicate with teens, and it is a smashing success!
I was absolutely fascinated by the book. When I started reading it, I just could not put it down. I was shouting `Halleluiah' by the end of the very first chapter! Dr. Parks is obviously a person who really knows and understands Bible prophecy in general, and the book of Revelation in particular. And, he has been blessed with formidable communication skills.
When I wrote to Dr. Parks to congratulate him on the book, I asked him how he had come up with the idea of writing hit. He replied: "The idea came from my 7th grade, after-school prayer group. They wanted to learn Revelation. To write a handbook simple enough for teens to 'wade' across, and yet thorough enough for new Christians to learn from, was a daunting task."
Dr. Parks is a middle school teacher in Lexington, Kentucky, where he teaches at Southland Christian Church
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
"Really well-organized, simply explained, and makes Revelation easy to learn even for me!"Review Date: 2006-08-22
The first thing you notice is how user-friendly it is organized--so easy to read. Even with the whole text of Revelation included, this book can be read in a couple of hours.
The next nice thing is that all the 'portraits' of Jesus in Revelation are explained in their own sections. Though I am no expert in Revelation, I appreciated how much the emphasis is on Jesus.
One more thing I liked is the "Backpack for the road" sections in each chapter. These give PRACTICAL suggestions we can use everyday. I never realized Revelation could be so practical.
I guess you can tell I liked this book. It is really PERFECT for new Christians and younger Christians (probably not younger than high school) who really want to study this book. I will use it to teach my Sunday School Class.
Oh yes. You may be wondering how my daughter liked it. She never got it!
"This little handbook is the finest short work on Revelation I've ever read. Loved it!"Review Date: 2006-09-06
I am not a teenager or new Christian--the target audience for this book. I also thought I knew the Book of Revelation pretty well, having studied about the Millennium, the Rapture, and the Second Coming for many (many) years.
So why did I get this book? Partly because if Dave Reagan liked it (see his comment) it must be pretty good (I love 'Lamb & Lion' ministry), but mostly because I so loved the author's other work: "With Joseph in the University of Adversity". But, I soon discovered this book on Revelation is a completely different style. It's also the finest short work on Revelation I've ever read.
I can't add much to what others have said. The winning points of this book are:
*It's simple enough for a 'newbie' but deep enough to teach us all. (The 'message' in the list of 12 tribes is awesome! Never heard that before!)
*It's got a lot of really PRACTICAL things for everyday life. Most Revelation books just explain the verses.
*It's short enough to make an easy-read, but still contains every verse of Revelation and wonderfully organized content.
*It's lightly illustrated (OK, I like this kind of stuff, so there!)
*It's got a primary focus on Jesus Christ--not just as the coming Messiah, but as Revelation pictures Him in SO many ways. This is almost a 'life of Christ' picking up after the Gospels.
This book would make a great handbook (that's what it is) for group bible study, or gift to a young person who is interested in Revelation. HOWEVER, I do think young teenagers might find even this simple book too much. You have to understand some bible to appreciate it, but that's why Revelation is the last book in the bible anyway, don't you think?

Great Testomony of the Power of FaithReview Date: 2005-06-08
"Miracles do Happen" is an autobiography of Sr. Briege's healing ministry. She prays for people and many have been healed of spiritual and physical pains and diseases. The book is full of stories and photos of people, whom she has encountered during her journey and many of whom were healed by prayers. It is easy to be skeptical of spiritual healers today, but unlike many charlatans in the field, Sr. Briege does not accept money or promote products or methodology for financial gains. The book is great for renewing faith in prayer, and offers much guidance and learning to discern God's voice in your life through prayer. Sr.Briege herself spends an estimated two-three hours in prayer each day, and write about the types of Christian spiritual practices which have been spiritually edifying for her.
This is a simple book about the role that prayer and faith has played in her life, and in the lives of others whom she has had the fortune to know, during her religious life and is not bogged down in theological explanations or issues related to debatable doctrines. It is written simply as an intimate conversation, as often is the case of works from saints, and when one reads it one has to wonder if they are living in a very special life time of a woman who might be recognized as a saint in the future.

Like the other two collections of Mermaid stories, "Mermaid's Scar" focuses on the immortal duo Mana and Yuta. In "Dream's End," Mana encounters a lost soul who has somehow retained his human soul, turning him into a tormented monster. "Mermaid's Promise" brings Yuta back to where he once met a young girl who fell in love with him -- and who has somehow been brought back to life as a soulless creature. "Mermaid's Scar" brings Mana and Yuta to a town where a woman somehow recovered from deadly burns -- and discovers an immortal boy with a horrifying secret. "The Ash Princess" goes back to 17th-century Japan, when Yuta was still wandering alone. Here, he finds a travelling old man and his young daughter -- a girl brought to life with a mermaid's liver.
Perhaps the most common comparison to the Mermaid series is the action/fantasy/romance series "Inuyasha." However, the Mermaid stories have none of the humor and goofiness that pop up in "Inuyasha" (although the story of the undead, tormented ex-girlfriend is quite familiar). The tone is melancholy, sometimes outright macabre, with a few sweet scenes of romance between the two immortals. Perhaps the best scene is the hauntingly lovely last moments with Nae and Yuta.
The relationship between Yuta and Mana is pure Takahashi -- they love each other but somehow won't admit it (and Mana gets pretty jealous at times). They stick with one another through thick and thin, and occasionally show little indications of how they actually feel. ("It sounds like you've fallen for me," Yuta says half-jokingly at one point)
Takahashi's dark "Mermaid's Scar" is a fantastic mixture of dark fantasy and gently understated romance. Sweet, terrifying and deeply satisfying.

A macabre tale of immortality's price...Review Date: 2001-09-23
Rumiko Takahashi's Mermaid Series is really quite a masterpiece. Each chapter presents a different tale and yet everything is tied together by the main characters, Yuta and Mana. It's like a group of short stories unfolding inside one main plot. It's not episodic, as the stories can stand alone. They are, however, greatly enriched by the base storyline about the legendary mermaid flesh. It's really quite an inventive approach, and I really admire Ms. Takahashi's imagination. The overall atmosphere is grim. The tone is serious, as darker facets of human nature are revealed. Everyone wants a piece of the mermaids, and all for various reasons. Greed, vengeance, selfishness... they are the driving forces in the pursuit of the elusive mermaid flesh. Yuta and Mana are plunged into the situation, being immortals on an unending quest for something... even they cannot be sure of what they're truly seeking. The art is simple in style, yet pleasant to look at and effective -- as is always the case with Ms. Takahashi's works. Panel layout is quite conservative if compared to her later works like "Inu-Yasha". The Mermaid Series definitely is a suspenseful page-turner which will leave readers very satisfied. Each volume packs a lot of punch. It's a pity because this is not enjoying as much exposure as "Ranma 1/2", "Urusei Yatsura", and "Maison Ikkoku" are. In some ways, this series is even better than Ms. Takahashi's more popular works.

Wyoming Handbook - Moon Travel HandbooksReview Date: 2002-02-22
Yes, the best guide there is to WyomingReview Date: 2001-06-04
Wyoming has fewer people than any other state (yes, fewer than Rhode Island and Alaska). But it's places of interest are many and varied, though scattered far and wide. You need a good guide and a GOOD READ to cover the miles and the days. I admire author Don Pitcher's efforts here.
If you choose one guidebook, make it Moon's Wyoming Handbook. If you'd like to get a second general guide to the region for comparison and cross-reference (including more descriptive listings of selected accommodations), I'd add Frommer's guide to Wyoming, which includes Montana as well.

As for any area, it's good to supplement with other specialized topic and / or area guides, but for a general guide to a large state, this one does a great job.
Logically arranged, well-written, and very readable, you can almost read it straight through; it's one of the better travel guides available.
