Jack Prestor, National Parks Special Agent, is sent to Death Valley to investigate the murder of an accountant. The accountant had been investigating the disappearance of funds from the park. Ev Brant is sent in to continue the investigation where the accountant left off. Before they've even been there 24 hours, another body is found buried at the sceen of the murder. With an attacker trying to stop them from leaving the valley alive, they continue investigating, hoping to find the killer before he or she gets them. To make matters worse, a group of aging Hell's Angles have taken over the park, and Jack is caught in the crossfire between the park rangers and the bikers. It seems that the park will errupt in violence before Jack can even solve his first mystery. This is a good mystery that kept me guessing until the last minute. The clues and red herrings are everywhere. Not to give anything away, but I didn't even interrpret all the clues correctly. Yet, everything fit together perfectly in the end. I highly recommend this exelent book.

A great guide to getting off the bus in Denali NP
Helpful Votes: 23 out of 23 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-11
This book is worth the entire price of the book if you just take in one piece of advice from the author - Get off the bus! The author gives over 40 options for getting off the bus and truly experiencing the park. There is a suggestion for every situation from a leisurely stroll to a back-breaking, multi-day, circuit around glaciers and passes. But don't forget that there are thousands of other options in the park that are beyond the scope of this book.

Also, the author shares a lot of photography advice that is often as specific as which bus to catch and which side to sit on to improve your chances of getting the shots you want. In general, the photography advice is not overly technical, but his intimate knowledge gained over the years comes through well. All in all, a very good book.

Great Starting Point for Denali Adventures

Denali National Park is different from the majority of US parks, as most of the area has no developed trail system (as opposed to Yosemite or Olympic which have very well-established trails). You are encouraged to hike around and explore on your own, which can be a bit daunting. Hence, a lot of visitors stay on the shuttle buses, content to just watch the scenery flash by.

Ike Waits brings your attention to how beautiful this park can be with just a bit of exploration off the bus stop. With the low-lying vegetation (most of the park is tundra, not forest), it is hard to get lost, and the rewards in terms of natural splendor and wildlife viewing grow exponentially.

This book brings dozens of easy-to-understand trail areas and maps to the Denali visitor. Informative, well-researched, these descriptions come with a background of decades of hiking and exploring Denali. You couldn't be in better hands, so step off the bus and go explore the park!

Sherwonit has put together an excellent collection of stories of cultural and natural history in this book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and would HIGHLY reccommend this book to anyone planning to visit the area. I can't wait to visit Denali National Park and know that I will feel more closely connected to the park and all of its wonder after hearing some of the stories it has to tell.

Great Alaska reading, thoughtfully assembled

Review Date: 2005-05-31
This collection stands out among many as a great resource for any traveler wanting to learn about Alaska from people (historical and modern) who experienced it firsthand. It's especially strong in presenting the classics of history, natural history and adventure travel: excerpts from the early explorers and mountaineers, descriptions of wildlife from Denali pioneers Adolph Murie and Charles Sheldon, and even some Native sacred stories. Those excerpts make Sherwonit's book a classic Alaska bookshelf sandwiched between the soft covers of a single book. Additionally, this anthology includes modern accounts by thoughtful writers and pioneers: a great essay on moose by Sherry Simpson, an account of the life of a grizzly cub observed by a ranger Rick McIntyre, and more. As an Alaskan and guidebook writer I've used this book often for my own research, as well as for my reading pleasure. Sherwonit has done readers a great service by collecting these 23 essays and excerpts, many of which are otherwise hard to track down. They make a great addition to a serious traveler's library -- but they're portable enough to pack for plane, ferry and tent.

Nice pictorial book, published by the Walt Disney Company
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-22
This is a very nice hardcover book that you could purchase at Disneyland. It was only sold in the Disneyland Park and not in any stores. Disneyland has been producing a hardcover book every year for some time, and most years there are only slight changes made from the previous years. But when a big Anniversary year comes like this years 50th, they change the title and cover to reflect the special occassion. New attractions and attractions that are under construction are usually shoe-horned into the last few pages each year. There are a few pages with some brief articles, but this is mostly about the pictures - which do have captions. The book is made up of very high quality full page and half page color photos of attractions, buildings, and people having fun in the Park. The binding and hardcover are the best quality, as are the glossy thick pages. I have the 25th year, the 35th year, and a few others to make comparisons of the changes each year, and it intersting to see the progression of the book over time. This usually sells for about $25 new in the Park. Old anniversary books sell for anywhere from $10 to $100, depending on where you buy them.

A must have Life-Long keepsake book to remember your visit

A fabulously interesting, detailed book with hundreds of beautiful pictures of all aspects of Disneyland. Includes the Disneyland Park, as it is in 2000, as well as it's history, it's seasons, and even some behind the scenes. Includes fabulously interesting articles to give more insights, details, background and often some history to go along with the beautiful photos.

This book is a treasure to both kids and parents. Something the family will keep and look back at many many times. It brings back the memories, the feelings, the fun of our past trips to Disneyland. As the park changes we can always accurately remember how it was during our recent visits as well as show the kids how it all started as just a dream of Walt's and how it got to be such an amazing place.

This book is a must have, even if you buy the newer 2002 edition called Disneyland Resort - Magical Memories of a Lifetime. The 2000 edition (the full title is Disneyland - Memories of a Lifetime) has the history and behind the scenes. The 2002 edition has the new California Adventure theme park as well as the Resort Hotels, but does NOT include the fascinating history and behind the scenes. So, if you can find them, buy them both. You'll be truly happy you did.

Are your projects smart? SMART projects are Strategically Managed, Aligned, Regenerative, and Transitional. The author discusses these principles in theory and real-life application. The book is full of graphs, drawings, anecdotes, and cartoons, making it an enjoyable read. You'll use the practical advice!

And a classic line to remember:

"It does not matter how well we deliver the project if it is the wrong one. It will still be wrong when it has been perfectly executed and is on time and within budget."

All of my life, I've waited to find out that the Ruby Ann's of this world are ALIVE! This book is simply fun, entertaining and tells great stories of the people some of us rub shoulders with! Ruby Ann is not afraid to tell all - even to the point of embarrassment! Her recipes are delightful, I've even made some for my dogs! Ruby Ann is my heroine - she can come spend the weekend at our trailer park anytime!

Deliciously Funny

Not only is this book hilarious, the recipes are fantastic and easy. I have yet to find a recipe that I don't like. Even the best cooks will find tons of recipes they like, as well as great (and funny), helpful hints.

I realize the people in the book are ficticious....however, after reading the book I have an uncanny feeling that I know them personally. I have visited the trailer park through the website and my sides still hurt from laughing!

Ruby is quite the story teller, a great cook, and of course a world renowned entertainer indeed!

When you read this one, you'll be swapping recipes and stories in no time!

Dresden Codex: Drawings of the Pages (Mayan Studies : No 3)

Standard b&w edition of the Dresden Codex

Review Date: 2000-03-22
Villacorta & Villacorta is the standard b&w reference on the Dresden codex, produced in 1930. Many, many papers and books use this edition because it reproduces well in b&w. What was red in the original is shown with outlines, what was black is shown solid. While many people work off 6th generation photocopies of this book, this edition is the only source I know of that is a clean first generation print. The commentary is in Spanish and based off the work of Ernst Förstemann more than 30 years before (The original is also reprinted by Aegean Park Press), but the drawings are the reason to buy the book.

Beautiful clean copy

The Dresden Codex is a masterpiece of Maya art and astronomy. This book is a reproduction using line drawings of Ernst Förstermann's chromolithographic reproductions of the original, as well as a commentary in Spanish of the contents (heavily lifted from Förstermann's commentary, also published in English by Aegean Park Press). Other copies of the Dresden are expensive and difficult to find as they are mostly out of print and/or from extremely small presses (such as a recent color copy of Försterman from a press in Guatemala). The line drawings presented here are clean, and reproduce well, whereas color reproductions of Dresden have to contend with the reduction of color to black and white when publishing papers. Many of the published papers I have seen include sixth generation photocopies of Villacorta. This reproduction is a much nicer place to start.

If you are studying the Maya, a copy of Dresden is necessary to have on your shelf.

Review Date: 2004-10-25
In preparation for my upcoming trip to The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee to take photos for an article that I'm writing about these incredible animals, I purchased this book and others by Cynthia Moss. This one will help to make people aware that elephants were not created for human entertainment. The rich among us saw them as the path to greater wealth, and left dead and abused elephants in their wake. The readers of this wonderful book will see elephants as the sensitive, caring, creatures that they are and always have been. We humans could learn much from reading how they bond together and watch over their young and each other. After reading this book, I hope many do as I did. Toss a check in the mail. These people who are helping these elephants are often doing without, to better serve a cause that they're very dedicated to. The many terrific color pictures made this book come alive.
