Provides all the information needed for brief or extended solo trips in Glacier Bay National Park. Includes excellent summaries of a dozen multi-day trips including trip highlights, photos, distances, ratings of difficulty, likely hazards, hints for locating campsites and maps suitable for scoping your trip. Also includes additional resources you may need in the appendix along with phone numbers. The book gave me the courage and information I needed for my first long, solo trip in a wilderness area. An excellent addition to my library.

Interestingly written and very informative. His maps are rather crude but used with a NOAA map (17318, 17318a, 17318b) they are excellent guides to camping sites, points of interest, and dangerous currents. 6 of us did a self-guided 115 mile trip over 11 days based on this book. Excellent description of routes almost mile by mile. A must buy if you are going to do any lengthy trip and are trying to minimize surprises.

An amazing book. I came to know it by being a student in the class that the authors teach at UC Irvine--AIDS Fundamentals (by far the most informative and interesting class I have ever taken). I read the second edition, originally--the great thing about this book is that it is consistantly updated textbook--if you read each edition as it appears, you keep up with the developments. This is a book to be read over and over.

Great for anyone!

This book is a must-have for anyone who works in health education or is a practitioner of any sort. Fan et al have created an easy-to-read yet detailed account of HIV and AIDS from the views of the epidemiologist, virologist, health care worker, psychologist, sociologist, and anyone else interested in the topic. I first encountered this book in 1999 as a student enrolled in a course on HIV and it's impact on our society. I now use it in teaching County sponsored HIV/STD workshops and mini courses to youth ages 13-19 and to professors and students at my university.

Alan Turing: Life and Legacy of a Great Thinker

Turing died too soon

Review Date: 2005-09-17
Teuscher has gathered together a set of thought provoking essays about Turing and the ideas he espoused. The diverse range of the essays is a good reflection of Turing's genius.

The essay on making a self-replicating Turing machine reflects earlier speculations on what might more generally be considered a self-replicating Neumann machine.

There is a palpable sense of loss in the book. Turing died at a relatively young age. What if he had lived decades longer? He could have seen the immense flowering of computing, in hardware and software. With his genius, what other insights might he have given us? If you wish, you can regard the book as speculations into this unknowable.

One of the book's authors, Copeland, has recently edited another book -'The Essential Turing', which has essays by Turing himself, and you may want to look at that text.

Man of many parts

This book celebrates the 90th anniversary of the birth of Alan Turing by bringing together a large set of essays on topics as diverse and colourful as the work and life of the man himself. Turing's fundamental contributions to computing kick started the modern computing era. However, he also made early and outstanding contributions to artificial intelligence, artificial neural networks, morphogenesis, cryptology and the philosophy of mind. The book touches on all these areas and includes contributions from luminaries such as Martin Davis, Daniel Dennett, Andrew Hodges, Douglas Hofstadter and Ray Kurzweil. The book also contains some essays on contemporary topics related to Turing's work such as the controversial area of so-called hypercomputation. While many of the essays are advanced, the material remains accessible and interesting. Turing had a strikingly original and whimsical imagination - reflecting this, and unlike many books on technical topics, this one includes some of the kind of speculation that is bound to fire the imagination of readers. Will computers outstrip human intelligence, and when might it happen? Will we become more like computers, or will they become more like us? Ninety years on from the birth of Alan Turing such issues are more relevant and pressing than ever, and this book makes an excellent advanced introduction to the breadth of Turing's work.

Hubertie Pruyn Hamlin was born into an influential Dutch family in Albany, New York near the turn of the century. Her first hand account both of her priviledged life and the dynamics of her family's influence in Upstate New York affairs is absorbing.

For homeschoolers using the Charlotte Mason method, this book offers an invaluable first hand glimpse into New York State history.

Highly recommended!

I truly loved this book. I am a twelve year old girl who on my way home from camp last summer stayed in a hotel called the Desmond in Albany, NY. In the gift shop, I picked it up and my mom bought it for me. I have read all 370 something pages and it is really hard to put down. It tells of "Bertie" and her childhood. She associates Lent with her cousin's birthday because her cousin is now older. I felt the grief she felt in losing her father, for last Spring, the same thing happened to me. She tells of being so happy that she finally got a dress that was red, and not mourning colors. You wish that you had a brother as nice and kind as to buy you treats for good report cards as Jack was. You see the influence Hattie and Jack had on her life. Gosh, it seems like your'e just there

This book provides a heartwarming journey away from city life and into the peaceful serenity nature can offer. The writing is beautifully lyrical while the artwork is soothing and delicate. My son, who is a lover of nature, enjoys this book and pointing out the animals on each page. I recommend this book to anyone, adult or child, who loves to get outdoors.

Author Amber Keyser wrote this fictional story based on the life of Esther Sessions Keyser, one of Canada's only female canoe guides during the 1930s and 40s. Esther was also Amber's grandmother. Esther died in 2005 at the age of 90, and had been taking canoe trips in Algonquin Park till the age of 87. She was an amazing woman, indeed.

This high quality book is written in rhyming lyrics with the refrain throughout: Paddle my own canoe. The beautiful illustrations of Dawn Sherman, along with the exquisite wording by author Amber Keyser, makes this quiet book feel as if you are stepping back in time, to a quieter place, a gentler time as you ride along with the young girl as she leaves the hustle and bustle of the city behind. You feel the hushed beauty of nature surrounding you as the young girl pushes off the lakeshore into the gleaming waters of the lake as she paddles along. You observe the lake's brook trout; you feel the serenity of the cathedral formed by trees and the warbling birds during the portage. A moose is observed by water's edge, so she doubles back so that she doesn't disturb him. A sudden storm presents a challenge for the young girl to steady her canoe. Was she successful?

As one and at total peace with nature, this delightful story made me feel the same way as I soaked in the surrounding natural beauty along the way and had the confidence to continue my journey with her when the going gets a little rough. The lyrical flow of words combined with the outstanding illustrations of nature make this gentle book a "keeper". What a wonderful life Esther must have had if the journey described in her granddaughter's book is like the rest of her experiences in the wilds of Algonquin Park in Canada.

The other review of this book says it all, but why can't I say what I want? ^__^
This manga series is a masterpiece. It's deep and cool at the same time. Now, when I say deep, I don't mean like Serial Experiment Lain or something, you really don't have to pay atteantion to know what's happening and/or get the feel of things. It's super-mondo-cool!
The second installment of the series picks up around where the anime OAV (the DVD) lets off. I won't tell you what happens or where exactly it picks up, read it for yourself! :P
(emoticons are stupid, but funny.)
Read it. Read it now. I don't see you buying and reading it! NOW!

Frustrated by the Alien Nine anime's ending? Pick this up.

What many people neglect to notice is that the anime was merely an interpretation of the manga; not an animated version of it. Because of this, many think the story ended where the anime did, but is not the case. The anime ends right in the middle of book two, which happens to be one heck of a cliffhanger, leaving many new viewers confused (and even angry). This review was written to clear that up for those who recently watched it.

The first two graphic novels can be grouped in this manner:

-The introduction and the growing friendship
-The trials of each girl

The third is most likely about protecting Yuri, but assumptions is a no-no in a review. During book two, Tomizawa starts giving depth to each of the girls, their emotions and fears being the highlights of the novel.

The art style is Tomizawa's usual-- big ears, no noses, that sort of thing. However, the amount of detail that went into some of the more critical scenes is amazing, and definitely gives the surroundings more liveliness.

As for story, it goes almost without saying that it's full of metaphors, symbols, and plot twists. And like usual, leaves you with more questions than answers. If you're someone who's a sucker for instant gratification, you should probably pick up all three at once.

Book two isn't perfect, however. Since Tomizawa intended to have Alien Nine be without a target audience, he ended up alienating both the younger and older crowds. It feels too kiddy for adults, since the characters are all pre-teens schoolgirls who are drawn cutely. It's also too graphic for children, as partial (but drawn vaguely) mutilation and nudity are in a few pages.

If you can look beyond the cute exterior (or embrace it), you'll find a wonderfully deep science fiction manga that continues the surprisingly twisted story of Alien Nine. It's a must if you want to understand the anime's ending.

Image, Syntax, and Mystery

Review Date: 2006-10-10
Reading Prado's poetry is like taking a ride on a feisty mare. Part of the joy is all that muscle between your legs running with more power than a human will ever know. And that's the source also of terror. But Prado's terror is nothing worse than looking down into the mouth of death (most often, her father's) and being both intrigued and repulsed by its sweet sick odor. Like the above reviewer, I'm an atheist (or agnostic at best), but nevertheless Prado's devotion to her God doesn't make me break out in hives. She questions her spirituality as much as she devotes herself to it, and since I don't have the answers either, I appreciate her guts. Plus, she's so lusty, I get all wambly just reading her.

For example: "Can a woman have twenty orgasms? / I don't worry about such silly details. / I want love, superior love." And, "After the grave, the clock goes on ticking,/ someone makes coffee, everybody drinks it." (from "Concerted Effort.")

If you like the raveling syntax of David Kirby (without the smart-aleckiness); if you like the texture of Steve Orlen; if you like the spiritual questing in the common things of this world of Robert Hass; and especially if you like feeling like the author is sitting there with you chatting over a cup of yerba matte' about birth, death, and in-between, get this book.

One of my favorite books of poems

This is an absolute must-buy. If you like the poetry of fellow Brazilian Carlos Drummond de Andrade (and you should, because he's brilliant-- trans by Mark Strand and Elizabeth Bishop, title: "Running in the Family"), you'll love Prado. She is complicated, frank, has balls, and expresses the most amazing HYSTERIA. I mean, you'll be BLOWN away by this book. Takes lines like: "I'm not so ugly / that I can't get married."

She also has an outrageous devotion to God, not unlike Gerald Manley Hopkins-- which even an atheist like me can appreciate. In some ways, she's doing what I wish more contemporary American female poets were doing. She hits gender issues head on, in an utterly flamboyent, decadent, laughing/screaming kind of way.

I rank this book among my very favorites, among Stevens, among Plath, among Celan, among Rilke, among Trakl. If I could only keep ten books, this would be one. And I wish there were more translations of her work. Will someone please take on this project? I would if I knew Portequese.

Also a virtual masterclass for auditioning for concertmaster
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-05
While being a history, the book is even more vividly an account of what current and recent past concertmasters have to say about playing as, and also auditioning to be, concertmaster. The interview with David Kim gives a bow-by-bow account of his own preparation for the Chicago Symphony audition. (He is concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra, but his Chicago experience led him to it.)

Other valuable aspects are the many descriptions by the concertmasters of lesser known but worthwhile solo violin repertoire and new composers to watch; accounts of which conductors led which orchestras and what it is like to play under them; and of course who was concertmaster when. The astute notetaker can compile a valuable annotated repertory list and a great list for choosing CDs based on comparing the sounds different conductors get from essentially the same orchestra, how orchestras differ with the same conductor, and comparing concertmasters.

I enthusiastically recommend this book!

A highly readable history of North American Orchestras

While this is a much needed look at American concertmasters over the years, it also serves as a fascinating and highly readable history of virtually every major orchestra in North America. Along the way we're treated to extensive profiles of Boston's Joseph Silverstein, Cleveland's Rafael Druian and William Preucil, Detroit's Emmanuelle Boisvert, New York's Glenn Dicterow and many others.

Deserves a place in every music lover's library.

One of the best National Park books
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-08-13
I have a rather extensive National Park library, and this book is one of the best. It is much more comprehensive than most books of its genre. Unlike many works on this topic, this volume avoids "preaching" about essentially political considerations and, instead, only addresses the geology, biota, climate and features of the parks themselves.

The maps are very precise and get you where you want to go. The color photographs and artwork are exceptionally beautiful. It would appear they were chosen from a different lot than the ordinary David Muench telephoto variety. This enables the reader to obtain an excellent grasp of what he or she may actually expect to see at each park. The traveler is not deceived in arriving at the intended destination.

Each park, 52 in all, is covered separately, usually in a 4-8, or so, page text, admixed with photos, maps, and also drawings, if any. The text is very well drafted, and easily moves the reader through the various features of each park, while simultaneously offering a great deal of useful back ground information. Again, the traveler is given a very good idea of what to anticipate, and how to prepare for the visit.

My girlfrind and I have visited 37 National Parks over the years, We have found this book, along with the National Geographic guide, to be the most useful works in preparing for each trip. Neither work has ever disappointed or misled us; a rare feat in this day of careless proofing and poor research. I value this book very highly.

This is a beautiful and very informative book. I have several books on national parks; and this one is definitely one of the best.
This book has GORGEOUS pictures of each national park--with full size glossy photos. This is a very in-depth book with @ 350 pages.
It covers 52 national parks with great description and with lots of color pictures. However, this edition may need to be updated relatively soon as Sand Dunes National Monument in Colorado is soon to be a national park.
I highly recommend this book.
