This is a great book filled with lots of great pictures and interesting information. The authors give you a real feel for the hikes and really get you in the mood for your trip. The map you get along with the book is very pretty vauge, so a more detailed map is required to really get down to planning. But a great book to start you on your way to a fun backpacking trip. Absolutely get this book if your'e taking a 'walkabout in the Sierras.

The collaborative effort of Thomas Winnet, Jason Winnett, Kathy Morey, and Lyn Haber, Sierra North: 100 Backcountry Trips In California's Sierra is an detailed and thoroughly "user friendly travel guide to planning a hike in California's wild, rugged, and beautiful mountains. Filled with topography maps, one hundred different trips with route descriptions, information on fishing, swimming, flora, fauna, geology, and history, and much, much more, Sierra North is a highly accessible and information-packed resource which is especially recommended for vacationing nature lovers.

I enjoy all of the Winnett books because they are accurate, fun to read and reliable. This book has little chapters on over 100 trips in the Sierra range, and the descriptions of each trek are a total delight. So often these hiking books neglect to tell you how to reach the trailhead and oftentimes they don't provide detailed instructions. Winnett never makes this mistake. You will not need a separate map to locate any of the trailheads, his maps and written instructions are first-rate. In fact, there is even a nifty fold-out map sewn into the rear pocket so you can tote it along on any of your journeys. Equally interesting is that this book doesn't merely give elevation gains, difficulty ratings and desriptions of the trail conditions. These are vital to know, but Winnett also includes little bits of information of what kinds of wild flowers you will encounter, birds, wildlife and other little nuggets neglected in other guides.

The book is supposed to be only for overnight backpacking trips, but there are many trails here that can be used for day hikes. These trips will be in the 10-16 mile range and any strong hiker can easily do these hikes in one day. If you do choose to go the multi-day backpacking route, Winnett describes water sources, camping sites and addresses whether bears or marmots might be a problem for you. Most importantly, he tells you where to find water and whether the water source is reliable throughout the whole year.

I can't recommend this guide highly enough. Even if you're an armchair hiker, you'll derive many hours of vicarious joy from this guide.

The best instruction on the golf swing I have come across

I have been playing golf for 5 years. I have taken plenty of lessons, purchased golf instructional videos and dvd's and subscribed to golf magazines. This book has been the most effective advice I have received on building the golf swing. It is a simple straighforward approach that works. The golf swing has too many moving parts for the average player to comprehend and implement. I think by using the approach of this book, much of the mechanics of the swing fall into place.

I love this book, and I've also ordered 2 more for gifts! It has all the old rides and pictures of almost all of the scenes from the Okeefenokee. It's also a great coffee table book, because everyone loves to look at it. The only thing that I remember about Six Flags as a child that is not in this book is the employees that rode around on roller skates with the little broom and dust bin picking up trash--that's what I wanted to be when I grew up!

Wow! the tar smell in lickskillet as the previous reviewer described it, truly brings back memories. I love remembering the old attractions that are no longer there:
Momo the Monster
The 2nd log flume
Chevy Show
Tales of the okeefenokee
Jean Ribault's River Adventure
Drunken Barrells
Spindle top
Flying Dutchman & Jolly Roger Island
and particularly THE HORROR CAVE!

If anyone has any specific memories about the horror cave or old SFOG attractions in general, contact me. I love to talk about it!

40 years of SFOG: Tim Hollis' recaptures the excitement that was once Six Flags.

Tim Hollis, an Alabama native, beat me to it. He has compiled the photos I saught, wrote the facts that I too learned in my studies, and recalls the physical body that became the world famous theme park that it today.

Remember when going to Six Flags Atlanta was like planning a vacation? Remember how a day at the park some how fancied all of your senses (the scent of thick black tar that covered the Lickskillet section in the rear gated section.. oh how that smell recalls the presence of the Spindle Top and Drunken Barrel rides)? If you don't remember, Hollis will bring it all back. He captures illustrations of former employees, park characters, vintage rides, and many park landscapes that are still prevalent today (for example, the waiting station for the Wheel Barrow that is now the waiting station for the Wheelie). However, it isn't just the photographs that makes this book so rich; it is the details behind the history of the park and attractions that we didn't know that is so engaging. Each photograph not only tells it's own story, Hollis' invaluable commentary supporting each picture is brilliant.

Before I read SFOG, I had classified myself as an expert in this field of amusement. However, Hollis gets to the core and peels off the layers, year by year, highlighting the attractions that have been forgotten (Sky Hook, Satellite Rides, Mo Mo the Monster) while providing enough trivia to keep the reader engaged from page to page. Today I am thankful that Hollis set me straight and wrote the book that I wanted to write, yet lacked the resources to write.

A wonderful black-n-white artifact collection bound into one book. Finally, someone tells the story of Six Flags over GA and they tell it the way it was meant to be told.

A Must Read if you care about wolves

This is absolutely one of the BEST books on wolves I've ever read! It is packed full of information but does not come across like an encyclopedia. It's easy reading with lots of colorful photographs. I was overcome with sadness and angry when I read McIntyre's account of the story of "Raggs the Digger," one of the famous and incredibly clever so-called "outlaw wolves" that eluded federal government capture for years. The book gives a lively and animated detail of how a famous bounty hunter "finally" killed Raggs, an indomitable spirit. It is an important reminder that there is no animal who will EVER be a match to a human being with a gun intent on killing it.

Excellent and readable book. I couldn't put it down. If you care about wolves, are simply interested in wolves and want to know their story, buy this!

Running a wildlife safari company in Yellowstone, the wolves that we view have become a major attraction. I have learnt so much from this book that it is now a requirement for all my guides to read it from front to back, so they are totally educated on wolves. Rick McIntyre's A Society of Wolves captures everything you want to learn about wolves, including their behavior, pack structure, and how similar they are to us. This book is a must if you are interested in wolves, wildlife and Yellowstone.

Rick McIntyre does us a great service with this book. It is an excellent compilation of written material and photographs that will prove transformational to anyone interested in wildlife. A moving account of day-to-day life in a wolf pack, it also provides an invaluable history of wolf persecution in this country. He also lists excellent resources to contact to learn more about the fate of the wolf and how to become active in their reintroduction. This book answers the questions "Where did all the wolves go?" and "Why do we need them back?" An important and compelling read.

Like Going To Church By Book

Review Date: 2007-06-18
I have viewed this book in several stores and have several times considered purchasing it, always deciding on another purchase, preferring to choose it again another time. Well, by generosity and thoughtfulness a friend purchased this for me as a gift. Many heartfelt thanks!

I was so pleased to have recieved it and wondered how she could have known. This beautifully photographed coffee table book is full of artistic and candid pictures of African American churches across the United States. Many of the portraits returned me to my childhood as I viewed the traditional clothing, vestments, altar dressings and familiar traditions that so many people of color hold in reverence. The less aquainted author probably would have focused on the preachers or perhaps the choirs but Jason Miccolo Johnson gave equal attention to all levels of participation in the black Christian tradition. It makes for a facinating and charming book.

Mr. Johnson has afforded the reader an opportunity to see the diversity that exists within the black church connected to our embrace of Christianity in the African American tradition. The baptist, catholic, AME, CME, apostolic, pentecostal and SDA traditions are all represented. Personally, I think the author left out one distinct African American tradition; the inclusion of the storefront church. Very many black people attend such churches in the urban centers of the United States. I would venture to guess that many of the churches profiled in this book originally worshipped in such make shift houses of worship or can trace their begginings to such humble origins.

Soul Sanctuary is a beautiful trip across country, tradition and culture with just the passing of a page. Again, many thanks.

If you are exploring South East Utah by car BUY THIS BOOK!

Review Date: 2008-06-28
A great book for exploring SE Utah by car, it is well researched, accurate and full of great advice and descriptions of what to find literally mile by mile and tenth by tenth.

If you are only buying one book for travelling south east Utah and exploring by auto this is the one to buy.

Black and White photos that show perfectly what to expect at each location, detailed and accurate maps of roads, trails and waypoints, campgrounds and facilities in each location and along the routes, good background information combined with accurate and in depth descriptions of most of the roads and two tracks in the region makes this a book you will want your 'navigator' to have open on their lap while you are driving.

Pull over often and read the descriptions and information at each milepost and you'll get more from one 50 mile ride than you would get from a month of being here without this book.

This is not a hiking book and the trail descriptions are not a Hikers Guide, so if you are a hiker you will want to pick up other books as well, but this book makes it a piece of cake to find each and every trailhead and to know what is at the end of each trail,or along it worth seeing.

Don't miss out on this book.

This is a wonderful guide for auto travel in SE Utah. Using the mileposts as references was a great idea and easy to use. If we did not have this guide, we would have never found an off the beaten path dinosaur track site. A definate need to have refence book for the serious day tripper in Southern Utah. Wish K. E. Rivers would write another book.

The layout and format of this book is extremely useful for planning day trips in easily accessable areas of Southeast Utah. There are many good references in regards to camping and backpacking trips if your so inclined. I found this book in my library and found it full of so much information I took it with me on my trip last May to Southeast Utah. It didn't let me down. The format uses highway mile posts for directions and I found this really easy to follow. I found it so useful I made the decision to buy it as two weeks was not enough time to explore all the areas listed.

"Ice-cream wrappers bloom

Summer in the Park"

Jane Yolen

This is a "haiku" from the book. Each poem is matched with a memorable picture of the city. The pictures are of everyday scenes and the haiku are easy to read, yet the effect is haunting. Although the book is only 40 pages long, a person could spend hours reading and looking at the pictures.

Children and parents and teachers will read this book over and over.

Kathy Park's illustrations pop off the pages of "The Student from Zombie Island and tickle your funny bone! While children laugh themselves silly at the book's original humor -- only a child author like Michael Moorehead can really relate to what makes his peers laugh -- adults love the subliminal message it teaches about not spreading false rumors.

Bust `em Up Bill is starting his first day at a new school in the middle of the school year, setting the stage for outrageous rumors to circulate about him before he even sets foot in the classroom. They say his breath is so bad, it will singe your face if you get too close, and if he burps near you, it might even set your hair on fire! Everyone knows he must be a frightening, horrible, rotten monster! Could it be true? With a name like his, why wouldn't it be? You'll have to read it to find out!

The "Student From Zombie Island" is the perfect book for gift-giving!

Book Review: The Student From Zombie Island by Michael J. Moorehead

here's a new student coming to class and no one is looking forward to it. The kids have been told he's called Bust `Em Up Bill, but they aren't sure why. Rumors fly as they try to decide what Bust `Em Up Bill will be like.

Each student has their own idea of how Bill must have gotten his name. Suzy Frederick is sure he's six feet tall and set kids hair on fire with his horrible breath. Penny Jinx thinks he must torture kids on the playground and make them swing from the monkey bars - by the tails. T.J. McGravy says Bill doesn't exercise in gym class, but makes kids run around the track 5,000 times - sideways. Who to believe? How bad will Bust `Em Up Bill be?

The Student From Zombie Island was written by Michael J. Moorhead when he was just seven years old. The book teaches children the danger of believing rumors and reminds readers that rumors can easily grow out of control and be far from the truth. It's a funny book - well written and includes adorable illustrations by Kathy Parks.

I enjoyed this book, as did my children. My daughter will be starting kindergarten in the fall, so this book came at a perfect time. It helped open up discussion about rumors and how to treat new kids at school and is written in such a way that it made it a fun topic to talk about instead of feeling threatening.

Have you ever had a new kid in your school? Do wonder what the person would be like? Sometimes your imagination can run away with you. Bust `em up Bill might have the same ideas as you? Some people might say this guy is.... troublemaker or a thief. Do you sometimes believe them? The book seems so realistic. Imagine bringing live bees to study spelling and putting whoopee cushions with chocolate pudding on other peoples' chairs! Most of the time, the kid isn't as bad as they say he is. Busting up your classmates can sometimes mean more than just beating up on their classmates.

Michael J. Moorehead has written a very entertaining book which will entertain children of all ages. This will be a delight to the kids who have a new kid in their class, or are a new kid in a class. Adjusting to being new in a school can sometimes be hard, but if you enter laughing and have a good attitude, there is nothing you can't do and you will soon find some new friends.

Jumping to conclusions without finding out the facts is never a good idea. The concept of "The Student from Zombie Island: Conquering the Rumor Monster" comes across in a smooth way and humorous pictures. I would love to read more books about the student from Zombie Island and his adventures at his new school!

We've just started our quest on this path, and found the insights given in this book to be helpful. There are some books out there focused on the Hindu foundation, and others on titilation, but this seems to connect in a practical western manner. Tantra is a process for sharing a deeper connection, and this book gives the proper context for that. This is not a primer on how to try "new" positions, etc.
