A CHARMING, MODERN DAY FAIRY TALE

Review Date: 2005-04-25
Chloe, Tip, and Darling are three fairies who live on the wrong side of the tracks...er...pond. Bladderwhack Pond that is and unfortunately they just don't fit in with the other young fairies from Penstamen who have the best hairstyles and wear the best fashions. Chloe in particular is a butt of the jokes from the Penstamen `clique', especially Monica who never lets Chloe forget she is an orphan. To make mattes worse, an evil little Fairy, Mr. Snivels, has broken the dam causing Bladderwhack to be flooded, including the school, forcing Chloe, the inquisitive Tip, and the chubby little Darling, to have to attend school in Penstamen. Could things get any worse? You bet they can!

Chloe constantly finds herself running into Prince Peter, sometimes literally, and Peter seems to like Chloe, much to the agitation of Monica who is dying to meet the Prince. A chance find of a History of the Heatherworld book convinces Chloe that the ancient prophesies are already in motion and that a secret entrance to the Heatherworld, the realm of the Wicked Witch Halga, is located at the bottom of Bladderwhack Pond. Chloe is convinced that she will find her long-lost mother somewhere in the Heatherworld and the three friends now begin a perilous journey, encountering fire-breathing Dragons, hordes of trolls, hungry crows, and the evil witch Halga herself, in order to uncover the ages-old mystery and reveal the truth about Chloe and her past, once and for all.

The Fairies of Bladderwhack Pond is an honest-to-goodness fairy tale but updated for modern times. We see the young fairies Chloe, Tip, and Darling, facing the problems of peer pressure and humiliation when they are not able to dress as nicely as the more upscale Periwinkle fairies. So with this book you really get an old-fashioned fairy tale told with today's tribulations. It's a light, fun read, filled with humor, wit and charm. While any kids in the 7 - 14 age range would enjoy the story, I think it especially speaks to young girls who can relate more keenly to the problems endured by the main characters. The book is beautifully illustrated by Andy Park and features a number of full-page illustrations that perfectly complement the story written By Debbie Bishop. The pair have created a story with lively characters that come to life before your eyes.

One note is that Amazon's description is incorrect. This hardcover is actually 152 pages, not 96 pages. Unless for some reason there is a different version...Highly recommended!

What a delightful read! Doug Garner takes us on a nostalgic ride through Forest Park Highlands' by-gone days as page after page explodes with amusement park Americana. Doug's vivid descriptions and extraordinary photographs bring back the wonderfully delicious smell of cotton candy, french fries, and hot dogs; the piercing shrieks of pure joy; and the thrilling roar of the roller coasters which permeated the air on those memorable hot summer days in St. Louis. Amusement park aficionados everywhere will relive the excitement of yesteryear in this informative and entertaining depiction of the birth and death of one of America's great parks. Kudos to Doug Garner for this comprehensive tribute to St. Louis' most famous park!

A lot of us familiar with Doug Garner's expertise have been waiting for years and years for him to finally get to do the book he wanted to do on the Highlands. As expected, he's produced a simply terrific photo book packed with information and details only he would know and that rarity--captions which go beyond just describing the photos to bring them to life and offer rich background information. It's all done with style and verve and for dessert he throws in West End Heights, Suburban Garden, Westlake Park and Chain of Rocks Fun Fair. I have waited all my life to see photos of Suburban Garden, as I grew up a five minute walk from the place, or what little was left of it. Arcadia has come a long way from its early efforts and this book will sell big with anyone who loves St. Louis history, amusement parks, roller coasters or quality bookmaking. Congratulations, Doug!

Mr. Garner has captured a time and a place in America that tells an arresting story about this nation's ideas of play and fantasy...then he caps it off with a blazing inferno that fixes this park forever in St. Louis history. I love it. And is it just me, or are some of the photo captions downright sly?

I am a biologist that has been working in the Galapagos as a Naturalist leading tours there for the last 6 years. Michael Jackson's book is the "Bible" for the beginning naturalist and certainly more than adequate for the casual "ecotourist". Jackson covers all major aspects of the history, geology, ecology, and biology of the islands. In the "biology" section, he gives a clear, concise, but thorough group-by-group treatment of all major taxa including plants, reptiles, land and sea birds, mammals, and a brief section covering marine life. While there are other guidebooks available, none come close to the accuracy, clarity of presentation, and logical format of this book. Of particular usefulness are the many photos, tables, and graphs which provide a visual representation of many of the topics discussed and a synthesis of large amounts of data.

A wonderful introduction to the life of this fantastic place

My wife and I bought Jackson's book in preparation for a trip to the Galapagos. The book served us well; when we arrived at the islands we felt that we were almost on a first-name basis with all the fantastic creatures and plants that make the Galapagos such a fascinating place. The book is considerably more than just a field guide; it includes information on the islands' history, their environmental and ecological setting, and the conservation efforts being made to preserve this truly unique place. And, as the title indicates, the book provides a lot of natural history, not just a brief summary of bare facts about each animal or plant. Not only is it a fine guide, it is a most enjoyable read.

I just recently returned from the Galapagos Islands, and the book that guided me throughout my journey was this book by M.H. Jackson. Very easy to find the animal you are looking, and also helps to discover more creatures to look for. Helped explain things further from what the guides had said. Also helped me in answering many people's questions about different creatures. A Great book! A must for all travelers to the galapagos in search of unique wildlife.

I would imagine that most visitors to the Galapaos are not naturalists. For those without a strong background in natural sciences, I would highly recommend this book. The book is easy and fun to read, detailed without being tedious. The photos are amazing and the author's passion for the islands is evident. If you only have time to read one book, this is one I would advise a Galapagos visitor to read in advance of their trip.

This book, by Guilbert and Park, is the "Bible" for any economic geologist on ore deposits. As a graduate student in geology, I am constantly using it as a reference and use it more frequently than any other book I have. We used another textbook for my economic geology course, but all of us referred to "The Geology of Ore Deposits" when some info was needed. It is also on several professers shelves as well. Well organized and easy to find specific info.

A Geology-Centered Introduction to Ore Deposits

Review Date: 2008-01-23
This is a book on the geology of ore deposits. It is not a book on exploration techniques. Although most of the geology described in this book is on land, there is also discussion of submarine volcanics and oceanic manganese nodules.

Carbonatites are mentioned as bearers of various metals, notably the REEs (rare earths). The authors treat carbonatites as strictly igneous rocks, comparable to kimberlites. The REE-rich Mountain Pass carbonatite of California is mentioned, but not the larger one at Bayan Obo, Inner Mongolia.

Pegmatites are featured as important carriers of precious metals. These include common metals, as well as exotic ones such as niobium, tantalum, rare earths, and many more. REEs are often found concentrated in the contact-metamorphic aureoles of pegmatites (p. 198). Most pegmatites are late-stage magmatic products, enriched in volatiles as well as elements that don't "fit" the matrices of the common granitic minerals.

Many economic deposits are the result of concentration by alteration processes. Apropos to this, a helpful table of the relative mobility of ions is included (p. 780). Attention is also devoted to skarn deposits.

Details are given about such things as porphyry copper deposits, various hydrothermal deposits, massive sulphide deposits, BIFs (banded iron formations) Mississippi-Valley type deposits, uranium deposits, bauxite, and much more. The chapter on placer deposits includes sketches of important auriferous placers.

There are several schematic sketches in this book. These include such things as the zonal distribution of metal deposits in a lithologic sequence.

More than 20 years after its publication, this book is still (and deservedly) probably the most widely used text on the origin, description and classification of ore deposits. It is written in an entertaining style and provides enjoyment to the reader on a subject that could easily become dry. In 1986, when this book first appeared, many processes of ore formation were suspected but not scientifically proven. Most have since been proven, and Guilbert and Park have been proven correct in their assumptions. The book is in general very comprehensive, although it lacks any description of iron-oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) deposits, the first of which (Olympic Dam in South Australia) was discovered in 1976. For an up-to-date text, the reader can consult the "recent classic" by Robb Introduction to Ore-Forming Processes. The community of geologists has been extraordinarily industrious over the period between the publication of these two books.

"A Gilgamesh Play for Teen Readers" is a GREAT teaching resource! I've taught seventh grade social studies ancient history for a number of years, and this play exactly fits the bill! Written for teens, this play tells the classic story of Gilgamesh and Enkidu in language that middleschoolers can understand and learn from. Sumerian culture and history are embedded so subtly, that students won't realize how much they've learned!

For teachers, this book offers reading within the content areas, excellent higher level thinking questions, and enough open-ended questions to lead students to write at a deeper level than simple lecture would lend itself to. Students become engaged with the material, are active participants in learning, and become engaged and proactive learners through this play.

I hope the author writes more plays like this, his talent and understanding of middle schoolers certainly shines through! This is the same author as the book "Teacher Under Construction", a how-to book on teaching at this level. I highly recommend this book to all teachers, public, private, and home-schools, who work with students in this study.

Who knew ancient history could be so fun?

Fun and Education Together in One Well-Designed Work

Review Date: 2007-02-24
When I read "A Gilgamesh Play for Teen Readers," I became jealous of today's middle-schoolers. I don't recall there being, when I was their age, anything both as fun and as informative as this play is. Dr. Parks has written a fast-paced entertainment that's also a masterpiece of education. While playing a variety of vivid and well-drawn characters, the students will learn, not only the main points of oldest epic poem still in existence, but also the heart of the world's first civilization.

In his play Dr. Parks does something brilliant and unexpected. He doesn't just retell the story of Gilgamesh; he sets it within a larger story in which all kinds of Sumerians go about their everyday lives of study, work, and play. Thus, the actors and the audience don't just relive the mythical friendship of Gilgmesh and Enkidu, and its tragic outcome at the hands of the jealous goddess Inanna, but they also see how the epic reflects the lives of the Sumerians who imagined it, and what it meant to them.

Beyond the play itself, Dr. Parks has filled his compact book with a number of valuable resources. His introduction gives an overview of Sumerian civilization and a summary of its greatest story, as well as a comprehensive list of themes and topics that one can teach from the play. Some of the scenes (or "tablets") of the play end in lists of questions that challenge the students to reach a deeper level of understanding of what they've acted. Finally, there's a "Sumer-cabulary" that clearly explains key terms highlighted in the play.

Too often, students miss the lessons of history because they're taught dully and dryly. Students who benefit from "A Gilgamesh Play for Teen Readers" will retain history's lessons as these come to life around them and become part of them.

'Wonderful and performable play of the world's first great story"

Anyone teaching ancient history, especially the Sumerian culture, understands that the story of Gilgamesh is one of the first and greatest stories every told. But there are few teaching models which teens will enjoy as much as this performable play which covers most of the story without exposing younger teens to the sometimes inappropriate aspects of the epic.

The book includes a wonderfully helpful vocabulary of ancient Sumerian terms, as well as a (very) short history of the background of the story.
The finest inclusion is a long list of themes in the Gilgamesh story. Teachers can take these to infinite lesson-applications.

Teens learn best by doing--not by lecture--and although this is more of a reading of roles than actual performing, nevertheless, it is an excellent treatment of this wonderful story of friendship, pride, humility, and death.

"'A nice adaptation of the Gilgamesh story which can 'safely' be used in a public school classroom"
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-23
This book is nicely done in an 8 by 11 format, which made it easy for my high schoolers to follow the script in class. I have to say that even though it is listed for teen readers, it might be a little more middle school oriented. The script--though an excellent adaptation of the Gilgamesh story--appeared to be a little trite for older kids.

The play begins in a Sumerian classroom, and the setting is not a part of the Gilgamesh story. Only about halfway through does the actual Gilgamesh Epic begin. This is actually a nice touch, by giving students a more thorough exposure to Sumerian customs. The ending is a nice touch, reverting back to the setting.

The play is nice, but to be honest, the reflective questions at the end of the chapters are the strength of this little booklet. If you are teaching Sumerian life, they are probing, analytical, and insightful.

Since there's really nothing to compare this to, I guess I'd say it's excellent. It certainly is the finest adaptation of the Gilgamesh story which can `safely' be used in a public school classroom.

'Cute play which really piques the kids' interest in Gilgamesh'
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-23

I don't know why there aren't more plays written for middle schoolers (and their teachers) that have some SUBSTANCE rather than short, 3 page 'playlets'. Kudos to this author for helping correct this dilemma--at least in the study of Mesopotamia. Now, if we could get some on Egypt and Rome!

This is a rather long play. It will take the average middle school teacher about 2 days. But it is packed with references to the customs, gods, childhood life, religion, and inventions of the ancient Mesopotamian people. It has terrific questions after each scene ('tablet'), and a useful 'Sumercabulary' at the end.

FYI, the format is large paged which make it nice for the kids to use in performing. There are NOT many stage (blocking) directions. The emphasis is mostly on reading and understanding the Gilgamesh story. Cute play with surprise ending! (NOTE: all of the explicit sexual references in the original Gilgamesh story have been omitted.)

She agreed reluctantly, but I thought she needed a little summer reading that depicted active, goal oriented teenagers. She loved the book! Now we wish there were more than just three, but we are going to buy the other two. These books depict 5 girls with varied cultural and ethnic backgrounds all working toward a goal. Wholesome and healthy. For once I am glad to have my daughter reading about teenagers!

Tony Johnston's little ditties and poems are delightful and will have your children reciting them quickly, i.e. "Baby spiders look like BBs. They give people heebie-jeebies." Illustrations of three baby spiders in big white diapers and pacifiers in their mouths make this a delightful marriage of nonsensical fun. Kudos to Rising Moon (publisher) for their consistent ability to select unique children's writers and gifted illustrators. Rising Moon continues to set the bar for captivating childrenýs books.

This book makes a wonderful gift or a reference to pour over time and time again as it is packed with information about the history of the Lodges of the National Parks, information about their architectural aspects, interviews with individuals involved in their building etc, along with wonderful photos that make you want to see them all, today! And, we understand that there is a NEW Great Lodges of the National Parks coming out in July, 08, along with an accompanying PBS series. If it is anything like this book, I won't be the least bit disappointed

Glorious Photos, Wonderful Book

We purchased this book as a thank-you gift for friends, and we were *delighted* with the quality and beauty of it. Truly glorious photos, not a ton of information but enough, and makes a spectacular gift. Highly recommended.

What a treat to find Great Lodges of the National Parks! Not only is the book full of lucious color photographs of the lodges (both inside and out and every season), but historic images and architectural drawings that make you really appreciate the simple fact that they were built in the first place. You also get the full history along with a sense of what the lodges are like today written in a very accessible style. I know people who are trying to go to all of the lodges in Christine Barnes' books. I plan on beginning this summer. (The book also includes Timberline Lodge in Mt. Hood National Forest outside of Portland.)

Glorious photographs will take you there!

This is a gorgeous book.
It has 192 pages--loaded with lovely glossy pictures.
Not all of these lodges, however, are located in the national parks.Timberline Lodge is in a national forest and Oregon Caves Chateau is located at a national monument.
The pictures in this book are breathtaking. Historical pictures as well as present day pictures are located in the book.
This book is VERY similar to the Great Lodges of the West book (also by Christine Barnes). Some of the EXACT same pictures that are in the Great Lodges of the West book are in this book!
But this book adds more pictures.
This one has more pages (as compared to 136 pages) and this one has more pictures. Also covered in this one is Belton Chalet and Sperry & Granite Park Chalets (which the other book doesn't cover in full detail).

16 lodges are featured:
1) Old Faithful Inn (Yellowstone National Park- Wyoming)
2) The Ahwahnee (Yosemite National Park- California)
3) Paradise Inn (Mount Rainier National Park, Washington)
4) Timberline Lodge (Mount Hood National Forest- Oregon)
5) Oregon Caves Chateau (Oregon Caves National Monument-Oregon)
6) Crater Lake Lodge (Crater Lake National Park-Oregon)
7) El Tovar (Grand Canyon National Park- South Rim)
8) Zion Park Lodge (Zion National Park)
9) Bryce Canyon Lodge (Bryce Canyon National Park)
10) Grand Canyon Lodge (Grand Canyon National Park- North Rim)
11) Glacier Park Lodge (Glacier National Park- Montana)
12) Belton Chalet (Glacier National Park)
13) Lake McDonald Lodge (Glacier National Park)
14) Many Glacier Hotel (Glacier National Park)
15) Sperry & Granite Park Chalets (Glacier National Park)
16) Prince of Wales Hotel (Waterton Lakes National Park,
Alberta, Canada)

Also in the front and back is a map that shows where these lodges are located. In the back are Preservation Resources and Travelers' Resources (websites, reservation information, etc...)
Although I didn't know that this book would be so similar to the Great Lodges of the West book--(it's just a bigger version), I do not regret buying it. I have them both and the pictures are mesmerizing.

Another great series of books for RL Stine. These keep kids attention and have them coming back for more. If you are trying to get your kids into Chapter books, then get these. They are entertaining and funny and most of them if not all are worth AR points. They are a fun read, so good your little will probably have it read before the end of the day. That is a great accomplishment for a child to read a chapter book in less than a day. These are super funny, cool, and entertaining and all the kids LOVE them.

This book is really funny!

This is the second book in a new series from beloved children's author R. L. Stine of Goosebumps fame. Bernie Bridges has a problem. His residential school does not allow any pets and his dog and parrot have arrived. How will he keep them hidden from view? A quick thinker, Bernie enrolls his dog in school. But the dog received his nickname of Gassy for a good reason and this causes all kinds of problems. The Great Smelling Bee will appeal to most school kids between 8 and 12 years of age. A departure from the Goosebumps style it is a good read filled with descriptions of the gross and messy stuff children that age like to read about while still providing an interesting story with plenty of twists and turns. This book should appeal strongly to boys where other books often fail.

son age10 loved it

Join Bernie Bridges in his second book. This time his mother and father send his pets to school. Only problem is that there are no pets allowed at Rotten School. Will they let his dog and parrot stay? Find out in the fast paced adventure in this book.

This book is written by one of my favorite authors R.L. Stien. I enjoy most all of his books.

Boys of all ages will enjoy the humor in this Rotten school Series.
