A CHARMING, MODERN DAY FAIRY TALEReview Date: 2005-04-25
Chloe constantly finds herself running into Prince Peter, sometimes literally, and Peter seems to like Chloe, much to the agitation of Monica who is dying to meet the Prince. A chance find of a History of the Heatherworld book convinces Chloe that the ancient prophesies are already in motion and that a secret entrance to the Heatherworld, the realm of the Wicked Witch Halga, is located at the bottom of Bladderwhack Pond. Chloe is convinced that she will find her long-lost mother somewhere in the Heatherworld and the three friends now begin a perilous journey, encountering fire-breathing Dragons, hordes of trolls, hungry crows, and the evil witch Halga herself, in order to uncover the ages-old mystery and reveal the truth about Chloe and her past, once and for all.
The Fairies of Bladderwhack Pond is an honest-to-goodness fairy tale but updated for modern times. We see the young fairies Chloe, Tip, and Darling, facing the problems of peer pressure and humiliation when they are not able to dress as nicely as the more upscale Periwinkle fairies. So with this book you really get an old-fashioned fairy tale told with today's tribulations. It's a light, fun read, filled with humor, wit and charm. While any kids in the 7 - 14 age range would enjoy the story, I think it especially speaks to young girls who can relate more keenly to the problems endured by the main characters. The book is beautifully illustrated by Andy Park and features a number of full-page illustrations that perfectly complement the story written By Debbie Bishop. The pair have created a story with lively characters that come to life before your eyes.
One note is that Amazon's description is incorrect. This hardcover is actually 152 pages, not 96 pages. Unless for some reason there is a different version...Highly recommended!

A Geology-Centered Introduction to Ore DepositsReview Date: 2008-01-23
Carbonatites are mentioned as bearers of various metals, notably the REEs (rare earths). The authors treat carbonatites as strictly igneous rocks, comparable to kimberlites. The REE-rich Mountain Pass carbonatite of California is mentioned, but not the larger one at Bayan Obo, Inner Mongolia.
Pegmatites are featured as important carriers of precious metals. These include common metals, as well as exotic ones such as niobium, tantalum, rare earths, and many more. REEs are often found concentrated in the contact-metamorphic aureoles of pegmatites (p. 198). Most pegmatites are late-stage magmatic products, enriched in volatiles as well as elements that don't "fit" the matrices of the common granitic minerals.
Many economic deposits are the result of concentration by alteration processes. Apropos to this, a helpful table of the relative mobility of ions is included (p. 780). Attention is also devoted to skarn deposits.
Details are given about such things as porphyry copper deposits, various hydrothermal deposits, massive sulphide deposits, BIFs (banded iron formations) Mississippi-Valley type deposits, uranium deposits, bauxite, and much more. The chapter on placer deposits includes sketches of important auriferous placers.
There are several schematic sketches in this book. These include such things as the zonal distribution of metal deposits in a lithologic sequence.

Who knew ancient history could be this fun?!!Review Date: 2007-03-02
For teachers, this book offers reading within the content areas, excellent higher level thinking questions, and enough open-ended questions to lead students to write at a deeper level than simple lecture would lend itself to. Students become engaged with the material, are active participants in learning, and become engaged and proactive learners through this play.
I hope the author writes more plays like this, his talent and understanding of middle schoolers certainly shines through! This is the same author as the book "Teacher Under Construction", a how-to book on teaching at this level. I highly recommend this book to all teachers, public, private, and home-schools, who work with students in this study.
Who knew ancient history could be so fun?
Fun and Education Together in One Well-Designed WorkReview Date: 2007-02-24
In his play Dr. Parks does something brilliant and unexpected. He doesn't just retell the story of Gilgamesh; he sets it within a larger story in which all kinds of Sumerians go about their everyday lives of study, work, and play. Thus, the actors and the audience don't just relive the mythical friendship of Gilgmesh and Enkidu, and its tragic outcome at the hands of the jealous goddess Inanna, but they also see how the epic reflects the lives of the Sumerians who imagined it, and what it meant to them.
Beyond the play itself, Dr. Parks has filled his compact book with a number of valuable resources. His introduction gives an overview of Sumerian civilization and a summary of its greatest story, as well as a comprehensive list of themes and topics that one can teach from the play. Some of the scenes (or "tablets") of the play end in lists of questions that challenge the students to reach a deeper level of understanding of what they've acted. Finally, there's a "Sumer-cabulary" that clearly explains key terms highlighted in the play.
Too often, students miss the lessons of history because they're taught dully and dryly. Students who benefit from "A Gilgamesh Play for Teen Readers" will retain history's lessons as these come to life around them and become part of them.
'Wonderful and performable play of the world's first great story"Review Date: 2007-08-04
The book includes a wonderfully helpful vocabulary of ancient Sumerian terms, as well as a (very) short history of the background of the story.
The finest inclusion is a long list of themes in the Gilgamesh story. Teachers can take these to infinite lesson-applications.
Teens learn best by doing--not by lecture--and although this is more of a reading of roles than actual performing, nevertheless, it is an excellent treatment of this wonderful story of friendship, pride, humility, and death.
"'A nice adaptation of the Gilgamesh story which can 'safely' be used in a public school classroom"Review Date: 2007-02-23
The play begins in a Sumerian classroom, and the setting is not a part of the Gilgamesh story. Only about halfway through does the actual Gilgamesh Epic begin. This is actually a nice touch, by giving students a more thorough exposure to Sumerian customs. The ending is a nice touch, reverting back to the setting.
The play is nice, but to be honest, the reflective questions at the end of the chapters are the strength of this little booklet. If you are teaching Sumerian life, they are probing, analytical, and insightful.
Since there's really nothing to compare this to, I guess I'd say it's excellent. It certainly is the finest adaptation of the Gilgamesh story which can `safely' be used in a public school classroom.
'Cute play which really piques the kids' interest in Gilgamesh'Review Date: 2007-02-23
I don't know why there aren't more plays written for middle schoolers (and their teachers) that have some SUBSTANCE rather than short, 3 page 'playlets'. Kudos to this author for helping correct this dilemma--at least in the study of Mesopotamia. Now, if we could get some on Egypt and Rome!
This is a rather long play. It will take the average middle school teacher about 2 days. But it is packed with references to the customs, gods, childhood life, religion, and inventions of the ancient Mesopotamian people. It has terrific questions after each scene ('tablet'), and a useful 'Sumercabulary' at the end.
FYI, the format is large paged which make it nice for the kids to use in performing. There are NOT many stage (blocking) directions. The emphasis is mostly on reading and understanding the Gilgamesh story. Cute play with surprise ending! (NOTE: all of the explicit sexual references in the original Gilgamesh story have been omitted.)

It has 192 pages--loaded with lovely glossy pictures.
Not all of these lodges, however, are located in the national parks.Timberline Lodge is in a national forest and Oregon Caves Chateau is located at a national monument.
The pictures in this book are breathtaking. Historical pictures as well as present day pictures are located in the book.
This book is VERY similar to the Great Lodges of the West book (also by Christine Barnes). Some of the EXACT same pictures that are in the Great Lodges of the West book are in this book!
But this book adds more pictures.
This one has more pages (as compared to 136 pages) and this one has more pictures. Also covered in this one is Belton Chalet and Sperry & Granite Park Chalets (which the other book doesn't cover in full detail).
16 lodges are featured:
1) Old Faithful Inn (Yellowstone National Park- Wyoming)
2) The Ahwahnee (Yosemite National Park- California)
3) Paradise Inn (Mount Rainier National Park, Washington)
4) Timberline Lodge (Mount Hood National Forest- Oregon)
5) Oregon Caves Chateau (Oregon Caves National Monument-Oregon)
6) Crater Lake Lodge (Crater Lake National Park-Oregon)
7) El Tovar (Grand Canyon National Park- South Rim)
8) Zion Park Lodge (Zion National Park)
9) Bryce Canyon Lodge (Bryce Canyon National Park)
10) Grand Canyon Lodge (Grand Canyon National Park- North Rim)
11) Glacier Park Lodge (Glacier National Park- Montana)
12) Belton Chalet (Glacier National Park)
13) Lake McDonald Lodge (Glacier National Park)
14) Many Glacier Hotel (Glacier National Park)
15) Sperry & Granite Park Chalets (Glacier National Park)
16) Prince of Wales Hotel (Waterton Lakes National Park,
Alberta, Canada)
Also in the front and back is a map that shows where these lodges are located. In the back are Preservation Resources and Travelers' Resources (websites, reservation information, etc...)
Although I didn't know that this book would be so similar to the Great Lodges of the West book--(it's just a bigger version), I do not regret buying it. I have them both and the pictures are mesmerizing.
