Move over Grisham and Patterson because Andrew P. Baratta is the next superstar. What Color Justice is masterfully created with superb character development. It has it all: murder, suspense and very thought provoking. And the ending, lets just say it's the best ending of a book that I've read in years!!!!! Stop reading my review and get yourself a copy of this book. It is a guaranteed crowd pleaser.

It is a rough but realistic story of the different perceptions of the various characters who come in contact with Darnell Cooper. The story is full of twists and turns that hold the readers attention and provides a very good read.

This is a fantastic book and a gripping read in the tradition of Scott Turow. The author (a lawyer) shares many insights into how the legal system actually works, in particular how legal strategies are developed and courtrooms operate. The emotional discussion of race forces the reader to think about these issues from many different perspectives. The plot is fast moving and the twist at the end completely unexpected!

"What Color Justice" is not only an extremely well-written novel, but a probative and UNIQUE commentary on our social world. The author's prose expertly sets each scene and delineates each character with a superior flow, all-the-while exposing a story that not only intrigues the reader but also forces him to re-examine his own perceptions. Baratta's consistent style and acute observations often cause the reader to give pause and consider his thoughts mid-story - a subtle undercurrent that is never didactic nor extreme, just refreshingly poignant. The whole story comes to a very clever end that matches the rest of the book in quality and surpasses the storyline of many more well-known authors in this genre. Andrew Baratta has done a fine job, and his novel is well-worth the read.

The variety of sensitive issues that psychotherapists must deal with are addressed in this stimulating book. In a respectful context, the authors challenge us to address a variety of topics that are almost never discussed in training, supervision, or consultation study groups among psychotherapists. This reading provides a wealth of topics and guidelines for thinking through issues such as, what to do during a psychotherapy session when we feel distracted, annoyed, drowsy or sexually aroused? What to do when personal values differ significantly from those of our clients/patients? Many more interesting taboo topics are addressed! I am recommending that my feminist therapy study group read this book for discussion!

This is the MOST PRACTICAL book on boundaries and ethics I have read in any language. It is an ideal text for professional training programs in psychology or other mental health fields. But it is also something one could use to guide practicing clinicians and/or plan inservice training. Last but not least, for the consumer who is wondering what "the rules are," this is far easier to understand than an ethics code. Nothing available in the professional literature can match this contribution by three widely acknowledged leaders in the field who have provided a virtual cornucopia of useful guidance. They cover many vital things including some rarely discussed. It's worth many times its price. This is the first book I think which could actually be used as a text in a professional training program which is seeking to truly cover the realities of the practice that their students face in the future.

This book certainly raises lots of issues not covered in school and provides a logical and ethical methodology to thinking through, however the book falls short of suggested resolutions that the therapist may entertain. The book is well written and clearly laid out but I was left feeling many "endings" were left off. I am faced with decision trees that involve ethics daily in my practise but I would like to have some insight into what my colleagues decision trees look like. I can always raise the ethical questions myself. Overall good reading but not a book I would reference. The book would be good reading for group discussion.

Thank you, Dr. Pope, for courageously writing about taboos in therapy!

In graduate training, we are trained to follow ethical principles, but discussions are limited. Students and professors seem afraid to openly discuss the taboo topics, like therapist feelings of fear, anger, hatred, and sexual attraction. This book provides the context for open, respectful, and insightful discussions in graduate-level ethics courses. Thank you, Dr. Pope!

I read this years ago when I was in Junior High. I am so glad they are reprinting it. As I remember I was the only one who bothered to read it and I felt as if I had found a treasure. This is a great gift for a boy that he will remember for life. I look forward to reading it again myself.

I was thirty when I picked up this book and I can tell you truely it was one of the best reads I have ever had.

The story is compelling, the characters are real and it just works on every level.

Fathers out there, are you looking for a good series for your sons to read? Then this is it. Don't worry, I haven't forgotten the girls but I just think boys will get very valuable lessons from this book about courage, comraderie and how adversity builds character.

Buy this series!!

My mother gave my my copy of this book when I was about [...]. I thought it was really cool because my grandfather wrote it -- no kidding, I really am Paul L. Anderson's grandson.

Then I read it, and I discovered just what a wonderful story it is. Mandorix is a credible hero, and as the first-person narrator he weaves a tale at once compelling and educational. Along with the companion volumes in Anderson's Roman Life and Times series, this book motivated me to study Latin, a pursuit I still enjoy some 50 years after I first read of Gaius Iulius Caesar and Dumnorix, of Quintus Rufus and Carnifex, of the foppish Quintus Cicero and his magnificent stand against Ambiorix.

Hmm, I think it's probably about time for me to read it again. If you haven't yet read it, you could order it today and be reading it by this time next week.

It leaves me speechless, well, maybe not...

With the Eagles was a great book, and it was great because this past school year we learned about Latin, Rome, Etc. The book takes place in B.C. 54. It's about Mandorix, an Aeduan, whose parents were killed, and his brother ans sister killed or enslaved. He joins Caesar's army and rises through the ranks gaining respect and the friendship of the lowest decurion to even the great Caesar. There are some great battle narrations, diagrams of roman bases, and tons of latin words and phrases. Have a good time reading it!

My father and uncle had this book when they were children, and my father gave it to me when I was in junior high school. It tells the story of a young man whose family was killed by bandits and is left alone in the world. He joins the Roman Legion, serves under Julius Caesar, and has exciting adventures. I reread it many, many times. In the story, virtue (including courage, industriousness, and resourcefulness) is rewarded, which gives it an uplifting message. I recommend the book highly: not only does it have a good story, but the author had researched the ancient Romans extensively and it goes a wonderful job of presenting history and Roman life in a palatable fashion.

Fortunately, this is but one book of a series! (The series is called Roman Life and Times, and some of the other books have been reissued-I believe "Swords in the North" is now available in paperback.)

This is one of those books that I seem to come back to every three or four years. The story stays fresh, it means something, it has character.

I can only say that the life lessons contained in this book, while fiction, come from composites of real tennis professionals that the Boyar's traveled with and observed. You see Laver, Rosewall, Newcombe, Ashe, et al. ingrained in the characters. It is a plesure to read again and again. It would make a wonderful mini-series, for a movie would not capture the full flavor of this novel.

I cannot praise this book more, it has touched me in a way that few books have. This along with Faulkner's "As I Lay Dying", and Steinbeck's "Cannery Row" & "Sweet Thursday", are books that I return to over and over. All three either teach me something new in the re-reading or remind me of something forgotten through the troubles of the world.

I thank the Boyar's for a truely remarkable book, and for being such a wonderful part of my life.

I read a lot, but I am still to come across a book that kept me as gloriously absorbed as this. You don't have to be a tennis buff to love this book, all you have to do is have a heart. It taught and showed me things that no living person has been able to do. Not reading this book is something that no person should do. A must read for everyone. Made me a much more broad minded and well rounded person. A rare gem!

I first read this book almost 18 years ago as a teenager. I can honestly say, that this one book, more than any other, taught me about life and it's little miracles. Gloriously written, with it's heart absolutely in the right place. I was able to procure a weatherbeaten copy of this book from a library that was discarding used books, and I still read the book today. Especially, when I need a little reminder or pick me up that things can always get better.

I've read this book over and over (in fact I'm traveling and in the midst of Wimbledon I'm desperate to read it again). A wonderful story that illuminates the history of pro tennis -- but you don't have to care about tennis in the least because it's the characters that are so absorbing. I'm still waiting for my "Christopher."

What's stuck with me -- and, apparently, with other people who have reviewed this somewhat obscure novel -- is the defining morals and character of the "people" in the book. They are incredibly real to me. They remind -- or teach -- the reader that honor is attainable, graceful, worth reaching for even at great personal sacrifice. A great, great novel. It's obscurity, I guess, is due to the tennis theme...but even if I didn't like tennis I'd love this book.

Experiencing the Yoga Sutras

Review Date: 2008-07-15
I had this book for the past 7 years, and find it to be an invaluable resource. What makes this text so unique is that is has both a translation of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, and a translation and commentary on Vyasa's commentary of Patanjali. Vyasa is perhaps the most famous commentary on Patanjali. The Sanskrit into English translation is excellent. I have verified this and studied the text with a world-renowned Sanskrit scholar. This particular book is also good because it provides extensive commentary and recommended practices for Yoga. Before beginning some of these practices it is best to practice them under an enlightened Guru, if you are a beginner to Yoga. Studying the Sutras with a Scholar is another recommendation of mine if you want to get a clear understanding and come to profound realizations.

Again, this is an excellent text, and a text you will come back to again and again if you have a genuine interest in Yoga. I highly recommend this text if you are interested in going deeper in your understanding of Yoga philosophy and the Sânkhya-Yoga philosophy.

If you are really interested in Yoga-as a practitioner and not merely out of intellectual curiosity-this is one of the best books you will ever own. It is a thorough commentary on the Yoga Sutras from the viewpoint of a true Master practitioner, containing countless jewels of profound insight into Yoga practice. It gives hints, and even many outright disclosures, of the real techniques of Yoga. I have read a number of translations of the Yoga Sutras, and this is not merely the best, it is in my opinion the only real one.

If my house were on fire, and I had just a moment to grab a few things on my way out, this book would be one of them. Buy it and put it on the top shelf of your bookcase, where it belongs.

Having read the works of Georg Feuerstein and Swami Satchidananda, this is my third foray into the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and I would have to rate this as the best of the lot. This is not to denegrate the fine works of Feuerstein and Satchidananda; I simply prefer the work by Swami Hariharananda and I highly recommend it. For someone new to the subject, Hariharananda is quite informative, with lots of background information.

For both theoretical and practical study of Yoga Sutras and Samkhya philosophy this is the book to buy, read and keep reading. I don't know of any book on Patanjali's Yoga and Samkhya that comes even near the quality of Hariharananda's book!
It has the original texts of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras and Vyasa's commentary in both Sanskrit and English and Swami Hariharananda's own Commentary translated into English from the original Bengali in which he wrote.
Although the introduction says that some of the esoteric exercises are not included in the English translation it does go deep into both practice and theory.
The book can be recommended to both beginners and other students alike as the translation of the Sutras to English is so clearly done that it makes some of the difficult text easier to understand.

Zak Smith is a brilliant alchemist. For my taste he is one of the first bona fide twenty-first century artists. I collect artbooks, and art when I can scrape the coin together. If I had the money today I would buy an original work by Zak Smith, (that is if there were any available for sale), but in lieu of an original work I bought his book. The full color pages of his art capture some of the excitement I feel whenever I look at his work. His use of color is outrageous especially when combined with the black and white tones of the ink drawing. The book Zak Smith pictures of girls shows off his mad skills, and I only wish it were a bigger book. BUY THIS BOOK!

I first saw work by Zak Smith when in New York for the Whitney Biennial in 2004. His illustrations for Gravity's Rainbow were included in the show, and I was stunned not only by the scope of the project but also by the remarkable amount of attention and care that he clearly poured into those pictures.

Having recently purchased the book Pictures of Girls, I must say that I'm as blown away by the work collected in this volume as I was by what I saw at the Whitney. Smith is obviously enamored of his subjects - there's no other way someone could capture so precisely the mood, the sense of place, the idiosyncratic beauty that the artist manages to convey. Stark lines and bright colors provide an arresting framework for the overwhelming degree of intricacy with which Smith infuses his paintings of the "girls." Gorgeous.

I also enjoyed the interview with Smith by curator Shamim Momin included at the beginning of the book - it's a great glimpse into the working methods of such a talented artist, and it will certainly inspire the next generation of artists to pursue their vision with the same unapologetic abandon.

As an avid collector of art books, trust me when I say that if you care even the tiniest bit about the state of contemporary art, Pictures of Girls is a necessary addition to your library. Every time I look through it, I notice something new to like about Smith's work. It's fresh, vivid, infinitely absorbing, and just plain beautiful. Whether you're an occasional museum-goer or a fanatical connoisseur, I honestly believe you will adore this book.

The first thing that I notice about this artwork is its stunning complexity - papers and animals and characters repeating in almost fractal-like patterns. This may sound odd since they are all 'Pictures of Girls" - and the girls are also gorgeous, with bedroom eyes and clothing of varying scantiness. Nevertheless, it's the colors and lines and shading that capture my imagination. Sometimes I am shocked to find that I am staring at pictures of girls in compromising positions with octopuses - so beautiful but yet somehow underscored by a tingle of creepiness. That ambivalent excitement is the mark of true art, in my opinion. This is a great book.

Nibley delves into critics of Joseph Smith's Facsimiles and their qualifications. The facsimilies are also compared with knowledge currently available in the field of Egyptology. Comparative analysis of ancient Abrahamic texts (i.e. The Apocalypse of, and Testament of Abraham) with Joseph Smith's Book of Abraham is done. A history of Abraham's time, sacrifices of him, Sarah and Isaac and early history of Egypt is given. Possible historical figures for Isis, Horus, and Seth are discussed, as well as Egypt's type of government. This is broad in scope, yet detailed, with numerous footnotes, and sketches. Nibley's humorous style, coupled with a depth that leaves no doubt as to his scholarship expands the horizons of amateur and professional alike.

So, the Book of Abraham is just the crazy ranting of old' Joe Smith, eh? It is nothing more than some sad attempt from old' Joe Smith to "translate" some Book of the Dead papyri, eh? And the doctrines in the Book of Abraham are from the crazy machinations and imagination of old' Joe Smith, huh?

In this fantastic tome, Dr. Nibley effectively and powerfully demonstrates the authenticity of the Book of Abraham, despite what the critics so inanely put forth in mounds of useless propaganda (Mr. Larson and "By His Own Hand Upon Papyrus" comes to mind) and takes Joseph's critics to task with brilliant scholarship and authoritative research that leaves one with the undeniable knowledge that not only is Joseph Smith a Prophet, but that the Book of Abraham is an authentic text.

In the first few chapters of this tome, Dr. Nibley provides a brief but thorough history of the Book of Abraham, including the Joseph Smith Papyri and the Kirtland Egyptian Papers, and clears up some misconceptions and false notions about the history and contents of the Book of Abraham. He also takes Joseph's decorators and critics to task, showing how their arguments fall like a house of cards when they are examined and scrutinized under the light of modern advancements in Egyptology and anthropology, archeology, etc.

The next several chapters are then devoted to the examination of the contents and claims of the Book of Abraham, wherein Dr. Nibley points out that the account and doctrines in the Book of Abraham are right at home with other Abrahamic literature texts, including the "Apocalypse of Abraham" and the "Testament of Abraham" as well as ancient Egyptian traditions and legends that Joseph Smith could have had no access to, considering that they were discovered and translated starting in the early 1900's. Further time is spent on dealing with such issues as Abraham's role as a leader and ruler in Egypt, the issue with Ham and the Sons of Ham and the Priesthood (i.e. the controversy over blacks and the priesthood) the significance of Abraham teaching astrology/astronomy and other doctrines to the Egyptians and many more points and issues that one misses when he/she casually reads over the Book of Abraham.

Finally, Dr. Nibley takes a closer examination at the actual facsimiles that accompany the Book of Abraham and which coincide with Joseph Smith's inspired translation, and demonstrates how a closer look at the facsimiles shows how it is not farfetched to associate the figures and symbols in the facsimiles with the contents of the Book of Abraham itself. Dr. Nibley also provides the point that the Egyptian Hieroglyphics, while at first glance may simply symbolize one character or expression, in all actuality provide multiple symbolisms of entire ideas and concepts, and that to think that each Hieroglyphic symbolizes only one dogmatic theme, character or idea is groundless and foundation less. I cannot do this segment of the book justice in this review, but can simply say that Dr. Nibley does a fantastic job at an examination of the actual facsimiles.

I cannot give this book enough praise. It was scholarly through and through, with new and fresh details and examinations that any student of Mormonism or the Book of Abraham cannot refuse to consider. As a companion to this book, I would recommend "Traditions about the Early Life of Abraham" which was also riveting and wonderful.

This book is well worth buying, even if you own the first edition. This edition has been enlarged by several hundred pages. One thing I really liked was that the text was cleaned up so that references were changed to endnotes, instead of parenthetical citations which is how they were in the first ed. This really increased readability. Nibley's research is for obvious reasons dated, but he himself says that research is a process, not an end to itself. This book still contributes greatly to the understanding of the Book of Abraham.

It is facinating to compare The Book of Abraham (Joseph Smith) with similar books that have recently been unearthed. Harold Bloom, the Yale scholar of religion believed that Smith had it right because he had tapped into a universal flow of inspiration, but the names, myths and structure make the Book of Abraham the most accessible of the apocalpses of Abraham.

Nibley does an incredible job of bringing together scores of documents into one volume for comparison purposes. He also has some fun with various critics of the book, almost all of whom lack any background in the literature that the book claims to be a part of.

Reading the book, and checking the sources, one starts to wonder if a wandering Slavonic Jewish scholar of Abrahamic literature didn't spend a winter at the Smith homestead ...

Well written and a great Christmas gift.

So glad this type of book, filled with very helpful information and insight, has been published. Can't wait until Craig writes a book for each state and then tackles Europe. Sent an autographed copy to a good friend, a double amputee who truly appreciates the author's ability to advise most accurately.

"Congratulations to Andy Jehn and Craig Kennedy for having the foresight and creativity to publish a much needed resource for the State of Colorado. This publication will draw attention to the programs that already exist to make the Rockies accessible and inspire others to focus on breaking down barriers for the disabled. Thank you."

"As our communities begin to make accommodation for those who can benefit from program and facility adaptation and expansion, it becomes increasingly important to publish this vital information to those who would benefit from it. Information contained in Access Anything: Colorado has been carefully researched and validated by the authors in such a way to be presented in a realistic and practical fashion. There is thoroughness to the material, which is of value to most anyone of any level of disability. No literature can be the end all resource form any single person with a disability. This resource guide does present information in a way the reader can make an appropriate distinction as to whether or not any given subject resource within the contents would merit further exploration. This is an excellent effort to make information of value known to persons who would benefit from consideration for accommodation."

Ms. Meagher's book is well documented, insightful and detailed. She skillfully takes the reader through discrepancies in the Warren Commission report and lays it all out for the reader. Her conclusions are based on facts that are very clearly presented, and on common sense. At no time did I get the impression that this book was attempting to influence my views on the work of the Warren Commission. Ms. Meagher spells it out for the reader step by step.

An excellent, thought provoking Book!

Reading this book makes you wonder how many police departments and courts actually did what they were supposed to back in the 1960s, and how they're doing today. Ms Meagher does an excellent job breaking down the Warren Commission's report and demonstrating that their synopsis of events is based on multiple errors, misstatements, and wishful thinking. Having come out before most of the "conspiracy theory" genere that surrounds JFK assassinations tories today, Ms. Meaghers book stands above all of them. She refuses to let her book wander into sensationalism, does not implicate UFO's or any such things, nor does she mix in photos which claim to show the truth but are often blurry, grainy or totally unrevealing to the lay reader. Instead, she stays on target, picking apart the Warren Commission's flawed analysis with nimble wit and skill.

Bring this book back in print!

Of all the books about the JFK assassination, why is ACCESSORIES AFTER THE FACT out of print? If you want to read books on how the Norweigian mob hired hitmen from the Planet Glixorg and had the assassination covered up by their media insider, Soupy Sales, there are dozens of books. But the one book to take a serious look at the Warren Commission's Report, to pick apart its inaccuracies, and to analyze its contradictions, is becoming harder and harder to find. Even Gerald Posner, in his tantrum, CASE CLOSED, could not lay a finger on the late Sylvia Meagher's masterwork. Why? Because it is a precise, unimpassioned, and brilliant piece of exploratory surgery on a very sick Warren Report. This book proves the Commission had a single purpose, and finding the truth was not that purpose. The lack of access to Sylvia Meagher's ACCESSORIES AFTER THE FACT is, to me, a tragic mistake and possible proof of a continuing cover-up.

Back in the early 70s I worked on Capitol Hill as a legislative aide on a Senate Commitee trying to reopen the Kennedy assassination or generate support for a House investigation. This was in the post-Garrison era and the credibility of anyone challenging the Warren Commission was suspect. (We now know that many of Garrison's failings were due to sabotage, but back then he was still radioactive to Senators, Representatives, and their staffs.)

Anyway, after all the backlash following the Clay Shaw acquittal it was still a tough sell, and the typical Congressman would give you no more than 5-10 minutes time to make your case, so we needed a one or two page list of powerful bullet points demonstrating that Oswald could not have acted alone, if he acted at all, and showing that the Warren investigation was compromised by the FBI and the CIA. These were serious allegations, so each
point had to be backed up by solid proof.

At the time, there were 5-6 serious books damning the Warren Commision Report: Inquest, by Edward J Epstein; Rush to Judgment by Mark Lane; Six Seconds in Dallas by Josiah Thompson; Whitewash by Harold Weisberg; and They've Killed the President by Robert Sam Anson.

In creating that fact sheet, no book was more carefully documented than Accessories after the Fact, and no book was more comprehensive and meticulous.

When we had to source each bullet point Meagher's book did the best job in directing us to the proof.

I left the Hill in 76--before the HSCA was created, and it has always bitter disappointment to me how its own work appears to ha ve been sabotaged, not unlike what happend to Garrison.

In the years since I have retained a keen interest in this topic, and at last count have read over 40 books. Meagher's book still remains one of the two or three best books written about JFK's death. In fact I consider it one of the best forensic investigation reports I have ever read in 25 years of practicing civil rights litigation.

We just stayed in a African camp (Selinda) managed and owned by the Joubert's. I wish I had read their account of the region before I went to Africa. It was a great synopsis of the highlights of their life in the bush. The pictures they captured illustrate the stories they portray. I recommend it highly.

Inspiring, informative and sensitive.

Excellent Complement to the Jouberts' Videos

Derek and Beverly Joubert are probably best known for their National Geographic videotapes on African wildlife, such as "Africa's Stolen River," on the drying of the Savuti river over the course of several years and the resultant effects on the local animal populations, and "Eternal Enemies," on the enmity between lions and hyenas. The text of this book is comprised of excerpts from the Jouberts' personal journals during the period when those videos were made, interspersed with explanatory material. There are also plenty of excellent photographs - both of wildlife and of the Jouberts themselves and their equipment.

For those familiar with their videos, this book provides a more personal look at the Jouberts and what their life was like in the Savuti, as well as providing some tidbits about what happened to some of the subjects of the videos after they were made. For those not familiar with the videos, it may still be an interesting look at what life can be like for dedicated naturalists in the parts of Africa that are not yet completely tamed.

Note that unlike their videos, which focus exclusively on wildlife, this book includes quite a bit of discussion of people - not only the Jouberts and their filmmaking, but also of hunters and of the human political issues that determine the fate of the animals. If you would prefer a book focused more exclusively on wildlife, you might try the Jouberts' earlier book, "Hunting With the Moon."
