...well anything worth knowing anyhow. I don't think there's any chapters about "Dog" the bounty hunter here but there are 115 chapters about life, death and everything in between. Sort of a manual for living beyond the 5 senses and 3 dimensions. Really... this book is just filled, almost overflowing with spiritual/metaphysical information. Reminds me of David Icke's work in it's extraordinary thoroughness and detail as well as the sincerity in their desire to share their passion and knowledge. Pick up this and David's latest and you'll be set for reading material for a few days (close to 1200 pages worth} and you'll know just about everything! Pretty cool huh. Well that's my take on all this but if you wanna read about "Dog" and Britney then go get your Enquirer and have at it!

This workbook is good for many reasons. It is written in a way that is easy to read, and very interesting. It does not seem at all like a dry textbook. It covers everything from defining eating disorders, to the root of the problem, to steps to take to begin recovering. I would highly recommend it for all ages.

The step-by-step instructions are easy to follow. It would have been better if the authors had given guidelines on how to judge when to move on to the next phase of recovery, and how to deal with feelings that arise at each stage.

This is the best resource for eating disorder self-help I have seen. Widely applicable for those who binge and purge by a number of definitions, including overexercising and subjective binging. Addresses a comprehensive range of related issues such as anxiety, obsessiveness, and perfectionism. Practical with real step-by-step things you can actually DO, ways to measure your progress, and encouragement about expected setbacks. Very strongly recommended.

Fine Writing, Egotistical POW
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-07
The writing and story seemed fine. It certainly had personality and flair. After a while though, the stories seemed a bit of a stretch. Guarino was the only one who could schmooze his captors into better treatment. Guarino was the one who reprimanded and instructed the more well-known POW's (Kasler, etc.) Guarino was wiser than other SRO's who advocated detrimental behaviors (Denton and fasting). Guarino was the one who had his hand on moving events (Denton speech at Clark AFB).

I'm sure the guy went through hell and more than I could ever take but the story really started to smack of someone trying to justify and prove his heroics. His heroics stood for themselves -- they didn't need to be built off the backs of others.

Fine writing and overall a fine story but starts to stretch credulity.

This book takes a harsh look at the truth of life of an American POW in Vietnam. Reading the horrid things done to our POW's would make me ill at times but it also gave me an even greater respect for the people who served in the Vietnam War. Our POW's went through a lot and if you'd like to experience that first hand, read this book!

I have read several accounts of the Vietnam POW's and this one was the most emotional for me. I am glad that he had the courage to point out the traitorous and despicable behavior of people like Jane Fonda and Tom Hayden. What these men had to go through is in the face of such cowardice by these traitors is incomprehensible to me. God bless you Col. Guarino... your efforts are profoundly appreciated!

As the young son of an Air Force officer, I was close to the family during the period of captivity. I only wish there was more in the book of the incredible courage of the entire family. The oldest son went to Vietnam and flew as a Forward Air Controller. The wife was deeply involved in the grass-roots effort to free the POWs and I was deeply touched by her courage, devotion and faith. I once saw the middle son save a young boy after the boy was attacked by a shark. It is often difficult to identify true courage, but here is an entire family. This is a great book of courage from the courageous father of a courageous family.

First I must say in response to an earlier review, no the villian is not revealed early on! I don't know how she knew, but I didn't know until the very end! This was a good book and a fast pace read. I'm not usually a big mystery reader, but I really like Jance's style and most of all I like J.P. Beaumont. He is a great main character.

I really enjoyed this book. Like the others in the Beaumont series, this was a quick read. The plot was entertaining. Just when you thought you knew who the killer was there was another slight twist. I also enjoyed learning more about J.P. Beaumont as the story was peppered with a few more details about his character. I would definately recommend this book.

This novel was an airplane read for me--a solid three hour flight plus a few moments at the hotel the next morning to finish it up. The plotting and characterization were solid, but not particularly novel. The "extras" added to the plot are in the main eccentric and interesting, as good mystery cameo players should be. Ms. Jance's protagonist was somewhat disappointing--a suitable sleuth, but some of the backstory just didn't work for me in this one. I'd pick up another Jance if I were in the airport and needed a good read, but I wouldn't go out of my way to locate the rest of this series. What do you get when you cross a dash of Christie, a dash of Hammett, a trace of Paretsky, and a lot of those modern "suburbanesque" detectives....something readable, certainly, but not quite a top flight mystery. If you need a good read, it's here, but it's a flawed work, and the villain is obvious from way too early in.

Miss Read's novels capture the best aspects of the small town provincial novel--the sense of connection, the wry Austenisms--while leaving the sentimentality and pollyanna-ism sometimes afflicting the genre to her lesser imitators. A Peaceful Retirement brings us another step--perhaps a final step--nearer to the end of this series. I recommend this series, and this book within the series, to anyone who wishes that a novel might have both a 20th C. awareness and a somewhat 19th C. sense of perspective....Most people have not discovered Miss Read, and one somehow wonders if "most people" really ought to. But I am certainly glad that I did....

Miss Read has written over 40 titles, with this final tome describing how her headmistress heroine copes with her new-found life of leisure.

In an afterword, the author says she is laying down her pen "with a thankful heart". It is all the more surprising therefore that these final tales show no sign of staleness. In fact, "A Peaceful Retirement" is quite playful in tone as Miss Read copes valiantly with a series of unlooked-for marriage proposals.

Given that the school year is so regular the author manages to describe events such as Christmas celebrations and harvest festivals with no sense of repetition, and as ever captures the tensions between town and country living, children's and adult worlds and men and women beautifully.

With this book Dora Saint, the real-life Miss Read, can take her own retirement from authorship knowing that she has served her readers well.

Publisher's note:

"The Voice of the Silence was the last major work to come from the pen of H.P. Blavatsky before her death in 1891. It is also one of her most important writings, being a guidebook for those dedicated to achieving enlightenment through atruistic service to humanity."

It may well take years to comprehend the profound wisdom contained in this sacred book. The Voice of the Silence was and is intended for daily use in meditation by disciples and students of the spirit, not for intellectual study!

It would be a good idea to be well versed in Buddhism and esoterism before venturing with this book (try reading Blavatsky's Secret Doctrine & Isis Unveiled first, and the works of Rudolf Steiner and Samael Aun Weor etc).
It might also help to be well versed in self-knowledge as well.

It is divided into three sections:
1) The Voice of the Silence
2) The Two Paths
3) The Seven Portals

This hand-sized Centenary Edition contains a three-part glossary, an index and an introduction including excerpts from mysterious letters by Blavatsky and others from the time when The Voice of the Silence was written.

"I believe that this book has strongly influenced many sincere seekers and aspirants to the wisdom and compassion of the Bodhisattva Path."

After Madam Blavatsky reintroduced the esoteric, perennial, spiritual wisdom back into mainstream western consciousness, she realized that there were two very different types of seekers who would make use of such knowledge. There were those who would seek it for personal power and selfish benefit, and those who would seek it to attempt to educate and liberate all of humanity. The difference between these paths was transcendence of the personal ego to reach the realm of the Higher Self. This book was an attempt to see that her gift of esoteric knowledge would not be passed unquestioned and unchallenged to those who were not fit to receive it.

The first thing that strikes the reader familiar with _Isis Unveiled_ and _The Secret Doctrine_ is the Buddhist emphasis of this volume. While it is based on the same archaic sources as the other works (some of which are pre-Buddhist in origin) it is the true Buddhist path of the heart that clearly shines through again and again. In fact, you have the admonishment: "But even ignorance is better than Head-learning, with no Soul-wisdom to illuminate and guide it." The Soul-wisdom is clearly present here on every page. This depth of understanding of the highest form of Buddhist thought is indeed remarkable for a book written in the 1880's by a westerner. In writing this book the Madam ensured that the spirit of true enlightenment would forever be welded to the Theosophical movement.

This particular edition is a verbatim copy of the original of 1889. As carefully as Madam Blavatsky chose her words, it would be unthinkable to edit them to be more "accessible" to a modern audience. If the reader has difficulty with the technical Sanskrit terms there are detailed glossaries included for all three sections.

This book is an authentic treatise about the many stages upon the ancient, universal initiatic path into the mysteries.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama recommends this arcane book on the back cover of the book itself.
This book can be easily misunderstood or not understood at all. What one needs is the keys of the path, the factors of the revolution of the consciousness. Otherwise, how can we listen to the "VOICE OF THE SILENCE". It is the Voice, the Verb, the LOGOS, the supra-Monad... We need the steps in order to do the "Will of the Father", here, as it is in heaven.
We must read and re-read and meditate on this book. It is profound, exact and terribly magical!

"In A Promise to America: God's Guarantee, Carolyn Corbin gives me hope for our country. It makes me realize the important role that Christians play in protecting America from harm and in building a land of freedom wherein our children, their children, and generations to follow can realize the hopes and dreams that only God can provide. Although God never made a specific promise to America, He did make one to His people. And, as His people, Christians are critical in the healing of our land. This books tells me how I can help my country to be morally whole again."

Our small Bible study and discussion group in Las Vegas, Nevada, finished the book "A Promise to America: God's Guarantee" and had our last discussion recently. Actually, it probably wasn't our "last" discussion, as we all felt compelled to take some sort of action. We will be each other's accountability group now.

Following are some of the comments from our group:

"I had never really considered the present happenings in the world as something I could be involved in or have an effect on. After reading the book, I find that God is speaking to all Christians to follow His steps and help bring about His promise to heal our land. I want to see the America Carolyn describes at the end of the book become a reality. I am going to post that description as my prompting to pray. Our church is about to begin '40 Days of Purpose' and certainly our group has had our hearts and minds prepared for this churchwide study by "A Promise to America: God's Guarantee." --Carol Wayne.

"I have been involved in the goings-on of the world. I listen to 'Talk Radio' every day. I can now see a call to action for Christians." --Ron Wellman.

"We all have been watching the moral decay of our society, and felt there was nothing that could be done to stop it. After reading the book, I feel that there is hope that we can have an effect." -- Dave Halligan.

"I don't know if there was anything 'profound' in the book -- certainly all this should be familiar to Christians who are in the Word--however I appreciate how well she tied the Old Testament to Today." --Harlan Wayne.

"I have always recognized the call to action from God's Word in relation to my own life. I now see there is also a call to action on behalf of my country." --Susan Brager-Wellman.

"The Church has been uninvolved for quite awhile with politics and world events. I believe this a 'wake up call' for us all. Already I am hearing Christians beginning to say 'we won't just stand by and let this to happen,' and I believe this book will spur more on." --Phil Gingrich.

Carolyn Corbin, in A Promise to America: God's Guarantee, has reached into the depth of an Old Testament teaching to bring truths into today that should be more prevalent in our society. Carolyn's futuristic eye is able to see ahead and bring others to the awareness of God's promises, not only on a personal level, but also on a national level as well.

I have passed this book to several other people to read. I have also read it to a friend who is a resident of a local nursing home.

It appears to me that the words of wisdom Carolyn shares in this book as an action call to Americans, is also and maybe even more importantly a reminder and demand to each individual to heal his/her own private world, and that one by one we can, with God's help and guarantee, heal our neighborhood, town, city, state, country and world. Thought-provoking, and written with the obvious passion of her faith journey.

I count it a privilege to be a part of the group who taught from Carolyn Corbin's new book, A Promise to America, over the past several weeks. It was truly an inspiration to me to be a part of the first group to use the free Leader's Guide. I know everyone who used the guide felt it was very complimentary to the book.

As I read Chapter 8, God Will Heal Our Land, I felt the Holy Spirit directing me in a very unique way. The author's approach to 2 Chronicles 7:14 was so concise and direct that I felt the need to compare it to another great book, the Prayer of Jabez (1 Chronicles 4:10). The author has taken a single verse and analyzed it so well that it spoke to me in much the same way.

One of the things that impressed me the most is the Old Testament examples based on the Children of Israel and the New Testament application based on our personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

I pray that Carolyn Corbin's effort in preparing this book will be an inspiration to Christians throughout the United States. I feel she has done her part, now it is our turn to put our faith into action.

This book is powerful because of its simplicity. I can not give this book enough praise! Since our family discovered this gem a few years ago, P.K. Hallinan (who does his own illustrations) has become one of our favorites. The subtitle on earlier editions was "A Book to Celebrate Diversity". Hallinan subtly covers many aspects of diversity through his rhyming words and colorful illustrations. This book is not preachy nor is it cheesy. I like that the book does not just focus on ethnicity, disability and differences. A Rainbow of Friends touches on views, interests, dress, strengths and weaknesses; it emphasizes acceptance, understanding, friendship and working together! A great book for all ages! Our family has donated copies of this book to the school library, given copies to each student in my son's class at school and distributed the book at community events. Heartprints (board book edition)Heartprints is Hallinan's best known book; I think A Rainbow of Friends is one of his best. I would also recommend How Do I Love You.

I love this book, but the first time I saw it the book was hardcovered. As a child I always liked my hardcovered books. I was disappointed to find that this book is no longer available in hardcover. I think kids and adults handle a hardcover with more care. The message of this book is excellent. I wonder if the publisher would consider making a hardcover version again.

This book by PK Hallinan is a wonderful teaching tool for all children. Although it is not a literary masterpiece, that doesn't matter. The adorable pictures and text portray the true meaning of acceptance and friendship. This is a great book for a child to own!

This book is great but as I see it, it doesn't get enough publicity. Not too many people are up on P.D.Carter yet, but believe me, they're missing out. Great Book!

Yo, if you don't have this book by now you are so far behind. You think you know, but you ain't seen nothing yet. Real Women Don't Wear Pink saved me from a bad relationship. P.D. Carter opened my eyes to how it really goes down in relationships. P.D. Carter holds nothing back. Best book I,ve read since Coldest Winter Ever. Thanks. We need more like you!

I recommend that all women over the age fo 18 read this book. I actually had the chance of meeting the author at one of her seminars in Los Angeles. She's so modest and down to earth that it's hard to believe she even wrote this book. It's full of love, lust, and deceit. I'm in search of other P.D. Carter books so that I can start a P.D. Carter fan club. Sounds crazy, but grown women have idols too. I'm impressed with her enthusiasm and "tell all" way of writing!

If you like Zane, Carl Weber or JL King, You'll love P.D. Carter

I don't know if P.D. Carter is a new author or if I've just been out of the loop for too long, but Real Women Don't Wear Pink is awesome. Trust me fellas, it's not just for women. Besides, if you want to get in the heads and hearts of women, start reading more. Real Women Don't Wear Pink is a good starting place. It's full of dirty drama!

Great Book!

This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. My book club got a hold of this book and simply loved it. I was trying to find it on a best sellers list and didn't. Read this book so that it can become a best seller. We need more successful young writers like P.D. Carter.
