If you are interested in this sort of thing, it is a really enjoyable read with plenty of illustrations. It is the story of the people who built and lived in Wilderstein, and the story of the house itself. If you like to learn about the history and background of the amazing mansions along the Hudson, it is indispensible.

LIfe, Death and Resurection

Review Date: 2003-10-19
Virginia Stem Owens journey from September to March in the Wind Rivers is not just a story about getting to the otherside of today. It is her story of dying, not a physical death but a spiritual death of sorts that she calls all of us to do over and over in life. This is a book of letting go of our past life and living our present.
"I went on down the trail, maneuvering the switchbacks and trying to keep my analogies under control. For I sometimes thought I heard wings overhead myself.
There is a dove in heaven, we know, that descends when the skies open, sometimes in fire. But perhaps there is also a hawk in heaven that swoops down on us with the gift of death to deliver us from our used-up past we have neither the courage nor the imagination to walk away from." (Owens 11)

An exhilarating ride with Popski's Private Army

If you have read Vladimir Peniakoff's memoir, then you will undoubtedly have an appetite for "With Popski's Private Army" by Ben Owen. It is the essential complement to Peniakoff's book, relating the perspective of his men. Ben Owen's book is a more intimate account of life - and death - in the ranks of the British Army's smallest independent unit, and leaves one missing the company of the men he so fondly recalls. The author gives a vivid portrayel of the warmth of comraderie set against the attrition and suffering of conflict, and breaths life into the discreet cameos of Peniakoff's book. Along with humour and pathos this book is richly adorned with accounts of breath-taking daring, skill and guile. This is a superb account of a vanishing breed, and I urge you to acquaint yourself with these remarkable men. Copies of this book are available from the author.

In the 1980's there was a group of sing ers fron the US calling themself as The Witness. They were performing in Penang, Malaysia. If it is same person I would apperciate if Pastor. Variety of Perspectives On Metropolitan Reform Models And Processes
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-19
".....
The workshop was organized into three panels: two plenary sessions and a round table discussion.
The Plenary sessions were devoted to an examination of the problems confronting county government and the challenges of the reform process.... Their papers comprise Part I of the Proceedings.

Papers presented in Part II are those which examine various forms of functional or structural consolidation..... Part III presents two views which are opposed, in some measure, to the consolidation reform model...... The final set of papers focus on the reform process---specifically, the legislative phase of adoption..... In summarizing, one can see that Fort Wayne participants were exposed to a VARIETY OF PERSPECTIVES ON METROPOLITAN REFORM MODELS AND PROCESSES which will provide a fertile ground for further advancement and refinement in the months to come....."

History Teacher's Delight

As a teacher of Oklahoma history, this book tells me everything I need to know that the student's textbook does not address! It is a teacher's delight! The book has great charts, detailed information on all of the southern tribes and is easy to read. This book is my primary source for sharing information about early Indians with my students and gives any teacher or reader the background of the various Indian groups without too much technical detail. It is also a book I would heartly recommend to students to use because of the easy reading and interesting factual details. Look no further---this one is a keeper!

If you need a good solid reference for the world of weather, you want this book. The pictures are excellent. The review questions and sections on applying your knowledge are relevant to the chapter material and are thought provoking.

The writing is not your typical dry, stuffy textbook lecture. The writing is light, easy to read and interesting. The authors use real life experiences to illustrate their discussions.

Anyone can relate to the illustrations and examples used in this book as nearly every individual has some experience with these weather phenomena.

Still a rarely traveled road
Helpful Votes: 25 out of 26 total.
Review Date: 2003-01-13
Long ago Owen Barfield perceived a disconnect between science and meaning - as early as the 1920's - and argued that the gulf between them was only getting wider and deeper by the 1960's. In Worlds Apart, he attempted to make explicit the presuppositions of the science of the day, discuss whether or not those presuppositions made sense, and what the implications were in either case.

Worlds Apart is a dialogue between two physicists, a biologist, a psychiatrist, a theologian, a teacher, a philosopher, and a lawyer. The conversation takes place over three days, and is set in the 1960's. The pace of the dialogue is brisk, the subject matter is fascinating, and many of the threads of thought and their conclusions are still, in 2003, refreshing and profound.

One such presupposition that gets quite a working over is this: the world is ultimately real only on the level of particles, or atoms. Anything not explainable in terms of particles is a subjective "experience" or appearance. Trees "appear" as trees because of the activity of our human minds. Other humans "appear" as humans because of the activity of our minds.

But if only particles *really* exist, and if all the appearances only arise in human minds, then why do we talk about the history of the earth, before humans were around, in terms of appearances - like trees and dinosaurs (which are only appearances)? Or, why do we talk about remote solar systems or galaxies in terms of appearances - warmth or coldness, brightness or darkness, etc.?

Even with Barfield's unmistakable English writing style, and *because* of his philosophical bent, Worlds Apart is a refreshing and disturbing read, one that is likely to take you out into very deep water, far, far from any shore you recognize.

Worm In The Bud by June Duncan Owen is an engaging tale a man called Lewis, and his peculiar despondence from his beloved wife and family upon approach of their wedding anniversary. Vividly granting the reader a superb perspective from the emotionally deprived on behalf of Lewis' long suffering wife, Worm In The Bud details an incredible creative progression from first page to last as the reader feels more empathy, more truth in the personalities of the characters. Documenting the storytelling talent and originality of author June Duncan Owen, Worm In The Bud is very highly recommended reading, particular those who favor a mildly thrilling mystery for its intuitive and eccentric style and its unique story.

Hysterically funny book that will have you quoting things to all your friends

Do not be ashamed if you have some of these records in your collection. I am here to talk you through it. Read the authors' lists of bizarre novelty records, bad theme songs and hopeless forays into singing by actors. They don't only go for the big targets, they also fearlessly take on well-known groups and otherwise talented people whose one bad album or questionable single lives on in popular memory. This book is full of laughs, which is good for fans of any taste. I've read it at least a couple dozen times. Really. It's that funny. The authors hinted at a book two at some point, and we're still waiting... Enjoy.
