This book caused me to review my life and vocation in the Body of Christ. I was impressed by it to seek God for my calling
in the church. No longer will I sit idly by while many souls are lost in the world I live in. I was encouraged to know that
I am needed in the church for God's purpose. I thank the author for writing this book. All who read it will also be blessed
and provoked toward labor in God's vineyard.

A wonderful research piece!

This text was used in an Educational Administration course in which I was enrolled. If you have any desire to be an administrator
in a school - this is the book for you. It is clear, concise and research based. The writer refrains from sermonizing and
allows the reader to produce conclusions based upon the presented research. I particularly found chapter 9 (i.e the work
of W. Edwards Deming) to be inspiring.
Every book has its faults as does this one. As stated before, most of the book is research. Unfortunately, most of the research essentially says the same thing but in different forms. Reading the same thing after a while becomes monotonous. The final chapter was very difficult to read.
Please do not be put off by my negative comments. I recommend this book highly.

Amazing Portrait of Suburban America

This is one of the most unusual books in print that you will ever see. These are photographs of people spending their free
time with their "own kind." Its a psychological portrait of identity. He has allowed these people to construct their own
representations. Yet, when he puts the pictures side-by-side, it makes a very different statement.
If you have been asked to take a group picture, you will understand the challenge. It is hard to make a meaningful comment about a group when they control the pose and the picture taking. These kind of photographs are often called "grip and grins" or "snaps." If you work for a community newspaper, you are asked to take them regularly. The problem is that the pictures often have very little story-telling ability.
That is what Bill Owens has overcome. Each picture provides a set of clues about what values matter to the subjects in his pictures. He has a unforgiving eye. He is not aiming to make heroes out of his subjects. To the contrary, in most cases, Owens is revealing them for their faults.
This book was made during the rise of suburban America. These photographs show a new social frontier that was being constructed, when people left the relative diversity of urban areas for the segregation of outer suburbs. This subtext is not stated by the author, but it is the larger message of his work, both in this book and in Suburbia.

One of the great New York novels. If you're an admirer of any sort of baroque sensibility, then this is a must-read. Deeply
cultured, deeply weird, and deeply original, James Purdy gives us a tour de force of compression, (not a quality usually associated
with baroque, I'll agree), spinning a dreamy web around an idea of a certain era in the city's artistic life. These characters
will live with you for decades, if you invite them in....

I came across this book by accident. (Looking for something else) I perused the book briefly and became immediately engaged.
I could not put it down. I bought a copy and began reading. The sermons selected were tremendous. They are life changing and
uplifting to say the least. The book reveals hope, joy, restoration and peace through the sermons it houses. It is the epitome
of classic, historical and jubilant black preaching and a must for the clergy of this era and Christians everywhere.

This book is in the best tradition of the book beautiful. A wonderful looking book that also is a joy to read. Do not mistake
this for a coffee table book. You will want to read the well organized and readable text as well as revel in its vivid illustrations.
Carol Flores skillfully escorts us through the artistic life of a colorful and influential 19th Century English architect/designer who is almost unknown in the U.S. despite the fact that his book, "the Grammar of Ornament", a collection of designs from earliest civilizations to the renaissance, is still in use (and print).
Not only can we easily absorb Jones' artistic philosophy which aimed to awaken a new era of English architecture and design, the reader can understand the influences that shaped it, see the drawings of his many projects, and enjoy his spectacular textile and wallpaper designs.
I loved it.

The author of THE VIRGINIAN

Owen Wister was born in Philadelphia into elite society, went to Harvard where he studied music and the law, travelled out
West because of ill health, fell in love with Wyoming and began writing short stories with western themes. In 1902 he published
THE VIRGINIAN, which was a huge success, selling over a million copies. Although he wrote many other books after that, including
fiction, history, and biography, none came even close to the success of THE VIRGINIAN.
Basically he was a reactionary, despising progress, and a blatant racist (LADY BALTIMORE, his second best-know work of fiction, is rife with racist ideas). But he was friends with everyone from Teddy Roosevelt and Henry James to Hemingway. Payne's biography is a good one and will probably become definitive. Wister today is thought of as pretty much a one-shot wonder, associated totally and only with THE VIRGINIAN.

This book is AWESOME, a wonderful story about making new friends and fitting in. In the story Owen has to make some tough
choices and the reader gets to choose with Owen. Each path shows the reader the consequences of their choice.
A beautifully written and illustrated book about real life situations. I can't wait for the next in the series!
