Introduction to Astrophysics: The Stars

This work fills a unique position in the literature. It is a concrete, middle-level treatment that devotes as much attention to methods of research and observation as it does to results. Here at last is a book in English which bridges the gap between elementary introductory accounts and advanced technical monographs. In this reliable and readable translation by an eminent American specialist in the field, you will have the best guide to observational astrophysics in the English language.
Linmiting his discussion to normal stars, the author begins with background material covering definitions and problems of measurement through the earth's atmosphere. Current methods of stellar photometry and spectroscopy are described lucidly and precisely: photographic, photoelectric, and thermal measurements; slit and slitless spectrographs; photoelectric and electronic spectrophotometry; etc. He then takes up the main results of research involving the classification and properties of normal stars, giving a general introduction to stellar spectra and their classification and an account of the Harvard scheme of star classes and spectral types.
This material prepares us for the construction of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagrams, which reveal the great families of stars and the two main types od stellar populations, and the Yerkes 2-dimensional classification. Subsequent chapters deal with continuous spectra of the stars, gradients, and color temperatures, spectrophotometric classification of two and three dimensions; diameters and effective temperatures of the stars (including the experiments of Michelson and Pease, the occulation and indirect spectrophotometric methods, principles of interferometric measurements of apparent diameters, etc.); masses and densities of stars; and a discussion of general theories about the constitution of stellar atmospheres and the evolution of stars.
The book provides a firm basis upon which the student will build all is future practical and theoretical work - the background indispensable to any advanced study of the manifold problems of astrophysics. It is also a fine book for hobbyists and others with some grounding in astronomy who want to explore these matters in greater depth than elementary texts allow.

Mr. McGee unravels the true story of the IRB and Irish politics
during 1870-1903. An employee of the Royal Irish Academy, Mr. McGee uses a high level of European scholarship and research
seldom seen in the USA anymore. Perhaps his greatest contribution is the fair assessment of Irish opposition to Parnell--never researched before. Mr.McGee also delves into the Fenian Brotherhood of America and Clan-na-Gael, showing the importance of American funding to the IRB. Highly Recommended--breaks new ground!

This is one of the sweetest, truest books I've seen about big sisters (or big brothers) having a special understanding of their baby siblings--having an intuition that even Mom and Dad don't have. Children and parents will be delighted to discover how this clever big sister encourages her baby brother to move beyond his first and favorite word, "no."

Riveting Erudition

At first a reader might think that a 3600 word short story, even by James Joyce, could not possibly occasion two hundred pages of exegesis. In Coilin Owens's hands, however, "A Painful Case," the eleventh story in _Dubliners_ (1914), naturally accretes depths and meanings, many of which will either extend readers' present understandings or be wholly new to them. Sophisticated and never reductive, Owens writes without critical jargon. The result is spellbinding erudition in the service of profound pleasure, an exhaustive, many-faceted enrichment of a story previously slighted in critical appreciation, and--one feels by the time one has finished--wrongly so. The geographical and compositional background of "A Painful Case," its moral dilemmas, its aesthetic poise, its literary and philosophical underpinnings, and its connections to Joyce's other writing come lucidly and often wittily to the fore. _James Joyce's Painful Case_ is thus like a definitive casebook, but with the coherence of a unified vision and style. No critic henceforth will be able to write about _Dubliners_ without reading this vital study, and because of its approachability and compelling profundity it may well appeal to a wider, popular audience as well.

And thats what this book really is, an uplifting encouragement
for the weak and fainthearted believers. It also serves as a rebuff for those who think they can lose their salvation.
God has used Martin Luther to convey the Gospel and uphold downtrodden believers. And thats what Martin Luther does on every page, remind us what Christ has really done for us. Christ has covered our sins and removed them, "as far as the east is from the west." So stay strong Christian, we are going to sin, but repent, get up and press toward that goal, for we no longer live under the bondage of the fear of death!
Thanks Barbara Owen for putting together a wonderfully comforting book!

Dr. Ferguson introduced me to John Owen through this work and I have been hooked ever since. If you would like to study a man who epitomized the way scholarship and piety is to be mixed together, then Owen is the one for you. Dr. Ferguson does a noteworthy job of making otherwise difficult reading a real joy.

This is a splendid book. John Owen is a theologian to be reckoned with on most subjects, and particularly as he deals here with the hitherto somewhat neglected subject of the Lord's Supper. If you feel that the current evangelicalism is bound in a narrow focus of individual experience, this book will lead you into wider, richer biblical pastures and to a fuller biblical piety.
With an historical introduction to the Marburg Colloquy of 1529, the deep suspicion of Zwingli in an outward-focused Christianity (against trusting in tradition and ceremony - does not this ring a bell for us?), we move into 'Symbolic memorialism' which is a helpful label for Zwingli's position. We discover that it is in Calvinistic-Vermiglian tradition that Owen establishes his own sacramental position. The sacraments are, as Calvin calls them, 'instruments' of grace. It is through these that, according to Owen, God confirms and seals His covenant with His people. For Owen the exercise of faith calls us to submit to the authority of Christ, to rest on the veracity of Christ, and to understand in some measure the spiritual relation between symbols and grace.
Owen's personal library was extensive and influential in his preaching and teaching on the sacraments. May we take advantage of this wealth of deep insight into the nature and substance of Owen's theology - especially as we have the outworking of these studies in the 25 discourses, where his pastor's heart for his people shines through. This book is a 'must' for all believers, to read and read again with profit. I strongly commend it. -Aubrey Ridge (Sovereign Grace Union)
