One of the latest titles in the outstanding "Meet The Author Series" from Richard C. Owen Publishers, Imagination showcases popular children's picture book author Mike Thaler who tells young readers about himself, and what it's like to create, write, and illustrate stories for children everywhere. Full-color photographs and warm, personal narration make Imagination an enjoyable read to share, especially with budding young storytellers curious about the creative process. Also very highly recommended for school and community library collections are two other "Meet The Author" series titles: Laura Numeroff's If You Give An Author A Pencil... and Denise Fleming's Maker Of Things...

My mother was visiting with me and was telling me what a good book this was for building our trust in God and then at the end of the book the publishing company had omitted 16 pages from 105 to 121. She really enjoyed the book and would like to read the omitted pages. Could you please help us to secure this pages. Thank you and God Bless.

Very funny and surprisingly touching novel by neglected mast

-er.

Although it does not seem to have been either a commercial or a critical success (and is out-of-print, though widely available), I think that James Purdy's 1986 novel is superb: a hilarious but oddly touching book. For the first hundred-plus pages it provides an account of a not-very-bright, twelve-year-old Chad Coultas, growing up in a small Midwestern town at an unspecified date between the end of World War I and the start of the Great Depression. (Purdy was born in 1927 and grew up in rural Ohio. . . but I doubt was as poor a student as Chad.) His usually absent father, Lewis, has squandered his mother-in-law's fortune in bad investments. His mother stays in the mansion-sized house, trying to ignore realities of any sort, preferring to work on delicate embroidery. His sister spends most of her time in front of a mirror practicing to become an actress.

And then Decatur, a decorated Menominee Indian hero of the First World War, whose fortune has been waxing as the Coultas one has waned, starts stalking Chad. picking him up after school each day in a different car. This alarms his spinster teacher, Miss Lytle, who had been Decatur's teacher earlier. Miss Lytle visits Mrs. Coultas, but the latter is even more reluctant to acknowledge this disconcerting pattern than she is to face the realities of her husband's infidelities and malfeasances. . . or that her son looks remarkably like Decatur did when he was on the cusp of adolescence. Soon they are off on a rollicking road trips with both biological and legal fathers.
The second half of the novel is picaresque, but Chad is no picarĂ³. He is too oblivious even to be an unreliable narrator, so it is good that Purdy did not make him the narrator.

There is some blood (and tar and feathers...), but the novel is not depressing, as some of Purdy's other fiction definitely is. Much of it is uproariously funny, though deadly serious issues of racism are central to the plot. Although the book veers away from lyrical realism into dreamily gothic surrealism half-way through, I found the second half very entertaining. Some suspending of disbelief is necessary, but not as much as in David Lynch works, and the book has a satisfying denouement (unlike not only much of David Lynch's work, but some of Purdy's other work, too).

Recognizing that I am in a minority, I highly recommend this novel as more than a worthy successor to such earlier masterpieces as MALCOM and IAM ELIJAH THRUSH.

A fascinating saga of British royal family history
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.

In The Shadow Of The Throne: The Lady Arbella Stuart by historical biographer Ruth Norrington offers the reader an unusually insightful portrait of one of England's most overlooked princesses. Once the favored heir to the throne of Elizabeth I, the Lady Arbella Stuart was descended from Henry VII through his eldest daughter Margaret Tudor and was the niece of Mary Queen of Scots. But her life was marred by illness, and modern opinion is that she suffered from the hereditary disease of porphyria - a "vampire sickness" that made those afflicted horrendously sensitive to sunlight, among other blights. Her cousin King James I opposed her marriage to William Seymour, and eventually incarcerated her in the Tower of London, where Lady Arbella Stuart died from it in 1615. A fascinating saga of British royal family history, extensively researched and including numerous letters and correspondence, In The Shadow Of The Throne is enthusiastically recommended reading for anyone with an interest in British royal history in general, and the life and times of the doomed Lady Arbella Stuart in particular.

Chefs comment on the definitive Pacific rim cook book

I experienced Indonesian Food when I was in Amsterdam in 1971 by eating it, that was another time. I worked at a Black Tie restaurant where there was a Dutch Master Chef and Executive Chef in 1980 where we had one day off, made Riz Taffle drank dark beer and rolled cigarettes. I love Indonesian Food. This is the book you find in Indonesia (not in English of course) used for reference. It is one of the most informative cookbooks I have ever read and I collect them. I had an attack when it went out of print once and scowered New York for a copy. I found a worn out version of the old green paperback and bought it. Sri writes more than a cookbook here. There are the essentials that you must know to impart accuracy to a recipe without the tourbook guide to the country. If you are into Asian food and don't have this book you are missing an essential ingredient in your kitchen. Her first cookbook and by far the best. Jeffrey A. A follow up to Owens's Infinity Express, "Uncle Shelby and the Pirates" continues the adventures of McCall as he once again journeys through time, encountering actual historical figures along his journeys. Owens has done great research to find fascinating, but sometimes little known, characters from history, and draws his readers in by incorporating factual information about them into his story, in a storyscape that boggles the mind with the intricate details of how it is woven. He does an amazing job of keeping with the facts, conjuring up fantastical images with his imagination, and telling a great story all at the same time. A must read for all fans of time travel, science fiction, and historical fiction!

The definitive primer of kiwi education
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 1999-06-22
There's no denying that American educators are fascinated with many New Zealand education programs and results. But there is more to the story than simplistic answers, formulas to emulate, and curriculums to buy! This book is WONderful, in its' balanced comparison of our American and Kiwi systems. Mr. Cullen is an expert, and introduces us to the daily school life of children down under, the daily teacher routines, and philosphical differences. He is careful to share advantages of both, without criticism or preference. This book truly introduced me to the N.Z. education system. As a result, I and my family now live, and I teach, here in New Zealand ( a former lifetime resident and teacher in Washington state). So this book comes recommended from a first-hand source. If you can't come visit and see what's happening in education here, do read this book! Many of the little ideas and methods are easily put to use in your classrooms. There are great things about both education sytems; if New Zealand's successes interest you, here is where to start your personal journey!
