WE CAN STILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE

I read Dr. Phelp's book in one sitting.
I enjoyed his characters and how they
interacted with one another. It is a
good visual of how important relationships
STILL are in our ever-shifting society. We
do have the opportunity and the power to
make a difference, and it can be done in small
and effective ways. Just by being ourselves!
I found this book refreshing, because it
is also a "how to" book to help people
be influential wherever they are at.

The most informative and entertaining book on this subject

It was to my great advantage to be spending the summer of 1992 in Lenox when I read this book, purchased from the local village. Carol Owens has provided a supurb look into the lives and lifestyles of the gilded aged super rich as well as an excellent portrayal of the architecture of the summer cottages of the Berkshires. Filled with historical facts and "twice-told tales", this book is a rare gem giving the reader a vivid and pictoral view point of life during this era among the social ellete and powerful industrial magnates. I was able to see many of the homes by using Owens' book as a tour guide. It was thoroughly fascinating! I even got a bit carried away when I decided to take an unauthorized tour of the massive (and deserted) 92 room Elm Court, once owned by Emily Vanderbilt Sloane White. The local police were less impressed with my venture. Lookout for the flowershop owner who works out of what used to be Elm Courts' carriage house--he is a real snitch. If you enjoy reading about the "400" and the gilded age or the architecture of this period, you must read this book. It is a real treasure!

Instructive, enlightening, intoxicating - just like the Berkshires themselves

Too often, people dismiss the Berkshires as the "Berzerkshires" - a place inhabited by the kinds of folksy degenerates who populated the artworks of the great Norman Rockwell, arguably the Michelangelo of his time. As Ms. Owens points out in her magnum opus, nothing could be further from the truth. The Berkshires are not merely the petri dish of the grotesque - they are also the locus of many random cottages, scattered hither & thither across the landscape, which it behooves any self-respecting human to visit, nay to study in depth. Yes, you will visit the Berkshires for the inbreeding & the unsolved homicides, but you will stay for the COTTAGES. Huzzah!

I ordered this am awaiting it's arival. I went to the Barbara Kreuger exibit at the Whitney and It's the best art show I've ever seen. Her work is topical and cutting and an accurate criticism and contempt of societial standards in the Western world. If you want to be smart understand Barbara Kreuger.

A Must-Have For the Old-Time Radio Fan
Helpful Votes: 29 out of 29 total.
Review Date: 1997-04-02
One of the undisputed classic reference works for the old-time radio enthusiast, first published during the original wave of nostalgia over 25 years ago, "The Big Broadcast" lists many network and syndicated radio shows that ran in the timeframe of the 1920's-50s, more commonly referred to as "the golden age of radio". A great source for cast lists (if you can't put a name to a voice) with informative articles on genres and more technical matters (sound effects, "independent" networks, etc.). This type of thorough reference work is usually frustratingly hard to find for the old-time radio. This book has been out of print for years, and when you found a copy of the first edition, you could expect to pay premium prices, especially if the seller knew what he had. The introduction, by radio comedian Henry Morgan (not to be confused with the guy who played Colonel Potter on "MASH"), is a beauty.

Most everyone knows the legend of Bigfoot. When people hear Bigfoot think of a hairy ape, and so do most people who claim to see him describe him as just that. This book is a sespense/thriller about a family that goes camping in california where many Bigfoot sightings have been said to have occured. Will the curious boy believe or not believe? Well read the book and find out.

An American Original
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-01
Bill Owens is a significant American cultural figure due to his photography alone, but he has done so much more than that. He was one of the pioneers of the U.S. microbrew movement, created one of the first brew pubs, started American Brewer and several other magazines, and in his 8th decade of life is spearheading the booming microdistillery industry.

Bill is also a nut, a force of nature, and fun to drink with, as you might imagine.

Except for the fact that he always has a camera with him, you wouldn't know Bill is a renowned fine art photographer. He doesn't talk about photography. He seldom talks about himself in any context. Bill almost exclusively talks about the next thing, whatever that might be.

Bill's photography is documentary. It's never contrived, although he often has mischief in mind when deciding where to point his lens. His subject is ordinary life in America from the sixties to now and, specifically, it is Bill's own life we're watching unfold, the places where he has found himself and the events he considered interesting enough to shoot.

Bill's most famous photography collection is Suburbia, but his most famous photographs, the ones you probably have seen, are the images from Altamont in 1968, which are included in this volume.

In addition to being a great sampler of Bill's oeuvre, this book includes a good amount of commentary, so you get a more complete picture of the guy himself.
