As we were leaving the grounds of the monument, we noticed the Big Indian Tepee Trading Post (or something to that effect) across the road ("Gifts, Souvenirs, T-Shirts, Cold Drinks, Food, Whatever"). I didn't feel like getting scalped in a tourist ambush, but my wife wanted to check it out. So, of course, we stopped. And, I'm glad we did, because I came across this absolutely marvelous book.
Owen Tully Stratton was a medicine show pitchman from 1898 to 1904, and a licensed, small town MD from 1906 to 1950. MEDICINE MAN is his memoir, as edited by his son. In the book's first 100 pages, Owen recounts his crisscrossing of Washington, Oregon, Nevada, California, Montana and Idaho as a medicine show huckster. While today one might view such an entrepreneur as not much better than a used car salesman at best, or scam artist at worst, I learned one very surprising fact. Owen's medicine show, and the others he talks about, regularly employed an MD licensed in the state they were traveling through. In any town the show happened to be working, the physician would set up a temporary office to see patients referred to him by the pitchman. The show's MD was not necessarily any more of a quack than the local medicos, so he was actually in a position to provide legitimate medical care - and often did. Of course the medicine show and its tame MD were bitterly resented by the local sawbones and pill pushers.
The remainder of the volume is Owen's recollection of his life as a degreed and licensed MD, practicing at various times in Washington, Idaho and Montana. It was a hard existence, both on himself and his family. But Dr. Stratton reminisces with a perceptive wit that calls to mind the writings of the great Mark Twain. At one point, the author, a self-confident general practitioner (GP) but reluctant surgeon, recounts the time he assisted on an appendectomy with a more experienced, but inebriated, cutter:
"My surgeon, in his drunken enthusiasm, discarded contaminated instruments by throwing them against the wall. The patient knew nothing of that, and her convalescence was uneventful. With that experience, my surgical feet warmed up a trifle."
Evident to the reader are the striking differences between the practice of medicine then and now, with some not necessarily for the better. Take, for example, "house calls". For those of you too young to be acquainted with the concept, a house call was a visit by a physician to a patient's home to render care. This was simply the way medicine was practiced in those days, and up until the time of the mid 20th century. (As a young boy in the early 50's, I remember accompanying my father, also a GP, on his house call rounds.)
I cannot recommend this book to highly. I was particularly impressed by the circumstances surrounding the good doctor's own death, as related by his son in an Editor's Epilog. His departure from life was pure class.
My own father is deceased these past 25 years, but I shall give this volume to my mother, also an MD. Her maternal grandfather was a physician in rural Missouri at the end of the 19th century, and I'm sure she'll find it as fascinating as I did.05851133005011999-03-29A fun look at part of U.S. HistoryI may be a bit biased as this book is written by my great-grandfather and edited by my great-uncle. However, the "Medicine Man" is a fun look at a time in U.S. History when the west was still to be explored. It was a time of story tellers and colorful characters. That is the story of the "Medicine Man". I would love to hear what you think of the book. Although the book is a little long and she will need to be 3 or 4 to understand it, I think it will be a great help to us when it time to explain about her lost brother.08075521355771998-08-23"Molly's Rosebush" helped explain miscarriage to our sonThe first time I read this book, I knew it was going to be a world of help in explaining our miscarriage to our son. The story is very gentle, very sweet, and involves not just the mother and older child, but her father and grandmother too. There are several analogies in the book that help explain the "why" of miscarriage to a young child. It is a sensitive, beautifully written story. The foreward for adults at the beginnig is also wonderful. I would recommend it for any family who encounters the need to explain a miscarriage to a child. When the new baby they've been expecting isn't strong enough to be born, Molly and her family find different ways to express their feelings and comfort each other.0972424113We Were Gonna Have a Baby, But We Had an Angel Instead1932014209I Never Held You: A book about miscarriage, healing, and recovery0595356362Surviving Miscarriage: --You Are Not Alone0310227771Grieving the Child I Never Knew159052151XMommy, Please Don't Cry: There Are No Tears in Heaven170062General2785Ages 4-84Children's Books1000Subjects283155Books16254411General2966Literature4Children's Books1000Subjects283155Books713072011General AAS4Children's Books1000Subjects283155Books394181011Hardcover394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books673422011Ages 4-8673420011Age Range (age_range)388186011Refinements283155BooksB0007JNCV8http://www.amazon.com/Monsieur-Teste-Paul-Vale%C3%8C%C2%81ry/dp/B0007JNCV8%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB0007JNCV8Paul ValeÌryUnknown BindingEnglishEnglishOwen94Book1951OwenOwenMonsieur Teste;0000005.021B0007JNCV85892003-08-22High modernism and source of theater of the absurdAccording to the introduction of Jackson Mathews, translator, Valery saw everything from the point of view of intellect. He was preoccupied with the pursuit of consciousness. The conscious mind was his obsessive center. Valery reports he had a reckless desire to understand. He says that writing requires a sacrifice of the intellect.

In the novel MONSIEUR TESTE it is stated that a superior man is a man who has deceived himself. The character tries to seek out inner masterpieces amid the brilliance of published discoveries.

My introduction to this work occurred years ago when I was a college student. I half understood the French in which the class was conducted. I struggled. I surmised the work was brilliant through the lecturer's description. I now ratify that judgment.

The work MONSIEUR TESTE is filled with arresting ideas. The narrator in the story seeks to know Monsieur Teste, to copy him. He is careful not to classify him among the mad.

Monsieur Teste says that he is at home in himself. In his room there is not a book in sight. There is a strong impression of the ordinary. Valery portrays a great refusal similar to my mind of that undertaken by Marcel Duchamp who in the latter years of his life refused to practice his art and only played chess. In fact there is a reference to chess in this work. Valery's work dates from 1896, predating, of course, the shape of the artistic career pursued by Marcel Duchamp.

Madame Teste describes her husband's moods as uncertain. She reports that their priest has compassion for Monsieur Teste, for a man so isolated. He says the Monsieur Teste's faces are innumerable. He believes that Monsieur Teste is cut off from both good and evil.

In his log book Monsieur Teste notes that he is not made for novels or plays. His goal seems to be an individual regulated by his own powers of thought. It is observed that in Paris the French have stored all of their ideas in one enclosure. In Paris there is a great concentration of literature, the sciences, the arts and politics. The chaos of a multitude of minds is tiring. "[S]uperiority is merely a solitude situated at the present limit of a species." Monsieur Teste is the man who thinks continually.

Up until a rather mature age Monsieur Teste is not aware of the singularity of his mind. He states he is not turned toward the world. His face is to the wall. An intellectual's end is a funeral march of thought. A snap shot from the notebooks yields the notion that admiration for genius is due to attributing to it the power of working miracles without fatigue. Another thought set out is that of trying to describe a man camped in his life. It is asserted that there is no perfect correspondence between feelings and the verbal-conceptual system.

Monsieur Teste thinks his mind is partly instinctive, partly scientific. His quickness of thought is in accord with absention from action he observes. Intelligence is the power of substitution. The mind moves by images. Images and change are inseparable. Education leads to including ones self with others. The most agonizing punishment to be imposed on anyone is to treat him with rigorous objectivity. The brain, too much occupied internally, deals brutally with external things. Monsieur Teste is a mystic and a physicist of self-awareness. The statement that the isolated eye amuses itself gives a flavor of the book. Notes are found at the back of the book.B0007JNCV854131998-04-30Ancient Truth surfaces againThis book gives us what paul Valery thinks, and what he thinks is the forgotten basis of many thoughts
Although not autobiographical in any usual sense, Valéry's novel is profoundly personal. Monsieur Teste reflects Valéry's preoccupation with the phenomenon of a mind detached from sensibility, yet he is also an ordinary fictional character. This volume includes "Snapshots of Monsieur Teste," excerpts from Valéry's Cahiers.
0811202135Selected Writings of Paul Valery0691018782Dialogues0691018804The Art of Poetry (Bollingen Series XLV, Vol. 7)0674024389Divagations0691020264Fear and Trembling/Repetition : Kierkegaard's Writings, Vol. 610410French10311World Literature17Literature & Fiction1000Subjects283155Books1413702635http://www.amazon.com/Moonglow-Mona-Jones-Owen/dp/1413702635%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D14137026352520463http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/4170MHH81BL._SL75_.jpg7550http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/4170MHH81BL._SL160_.jpg160106http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/4170MHH81BL.jpg475314Mona Jones-OwenPaperback8139781413702637551413702635EnglishEnglishEnglish9042495USD$24.95PublishAmerica1204Book2004-01-17PublishAmericaPublishAmericaMoonglow706101695USD$16.95795USD$7.9515800005.02114137026355002005-09-05Couldn't put it downMona writes with the type of flare that I thoroughly enjoy. Harrison experiments in anti-slavery idealism during his college years. like many scions of Virginia, he finds himself not inheriting as much wealth and property as his parents. he squanders what land he did inherit selling it to his brother and some others for Bonds that don't get paid. Fortunately there is a frontier of Northwest Territory larger than the 13 colonies. It is full of indians and British rabblerousers. Harrison uses the influence of his family to petition for a commission in the U.S. army. He does his job well, his early failures are only the failures of the entire army.

The Northwest Territory is slow to develop. Part of the reason it is slow to develop is that settlers can claim so much land at once. There isn't a population density high enough to require greater efficiency in agriculture, or enough industry to float a population with greater demand agricultural products. The answer seems to have been acquiring land from the Indians in bigger swoops, which were generally unscrupulous. the semi-aristocracy of the territories favored importing slaves to develop the land. the smaller landholders and workers didn't want slavery to diminish the value of their own production, or big manor slave owners lording it over them.

Once in the private sector, big land holders tried to make money producing vast amounts of alcohol. This abundance of alcohol ultimately produced the slow talking yokel dialect later encountered in the rural midwest and south.

In the end Harrison is a relatively decent person, occasionally taking opportunities that obscured this decency.0806138424511122008-01-26A Terrific and Insightful WorkThe three best things about this book are the extensive primary research, the author's clarity, and his unrelenting fairness to all his subjects. Every time Owens describes any peculiar behavior--whether by William Henry Harrison, other American politicians or by Native Americans leaders--he explains it in its context and then goes on to point out if it fits with the circumstances or if the actors are being inconsistent or hypocritical. While most historians work to understand the nuances and characters of their subjects, Owens is unique in explicitly laying these out along with the logic of his assertions. This helps the reader to really understand the motivations of these frontier people instead of just having to accept an author's implicit assumptions. To paraphrase a line from The Razor's Edge, Owens gives the reason and the intent--most historians just give the reason.

Besides the historical quality and the impressive research, Mr. Jefferson's Hammer is just a highly enjoyable read. Owens writes very vividly and uses lots of colorful language. The last two chapters, which describe Harrison wheeling and dealing for land and build up to the death of the Shawnee leader Tecumseh, have the pacing of a novel or at least a popular history. The author also has a snappy way of characterizing people and actions that make the book a lot of fun to read.

One somewhat noteworthy omission is that the section entitled "Everyday Life in Early Indiana" hardly mentions farming (except a couple of lines in passing), which one would suspect would be the most sizeable component of everyday life. He discusses ideological and cultural issues that are more related to the narrative, but it just seems that he could have included more about farming in that part or renamed the section.

That, however, is a small complaint about an issue that does nothing to detract from the author's intent to explore the rationale behind and the unfolding of U.S. and Indian relations on the frontier. I really love this book and think anyone interested in U.S. history would do much to clarify and add depth to their understanding of this period by reading it.
Often remembered as the president who died shortly after taking office, William Henry Harrison remains misunderstood by most Americans. Before becoming the ninth president of the United States in 1841, Harrison was instrumental in shaping the early years of westward expansion. Robert M. Owens now explores that era through the lens of Harrison's career, providing a new synthesis of his role in the political development of Indiana Territory and in shaping Indian policy in the Old Northwest.
Owens traces Harrison's political career as secretary of the Northwest Territory, territorial delegate to Congress, and governor of Indiana Territory, as well as his military leadership and involvement with Indian relations. Thomas Jefferson, who was president during the first decade of the nineteenth century, found in Harrison the ideal agent to carry out his administration's ruthless campaign to extinguish Indian land titles.
To this day, we live with the echoes of Harrison's proclamations, the boundaries set by his treaties, and the ramifications of his actions. Mr. Jefferson's Hammer offers a much needed reappraisal of Harrison's impact on the nation's development and key lessons for understanding American sentiments in the early republic.0807830410John Tyler, the Accidental President1400065607Polk: The Man Who Transformed the Presidency and America0805069224American Presidents: Martin Van Buren0979078423Franklin Pierce: Martyr for the Union0307276457American Creation: Triumphs and Tragedies in the Founding of the Republic (Vintage)491422United States468230History468206Humanities465600New & Used Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books712989011General AAS468230History468206Humanities465600New & Used Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books713012011General AAS491464Political Science468214Social Sciences465600New & Used Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books713011011General AAS468214Social Sciences465600New & Used Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books712982011General AAS465600New & Used Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books713014011General AAS319654011Qualifying Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books465250General2395United States2376Historical2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books886496General465244Military2396Leaders & Notable People2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books713045011General AAS465244Military2396Leaders & Notable People2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books2397Political2396Leaders & Notable People2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books2418Presidents & Heads of State2396Leaders & Notable People2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books2424Military & Spies2419Professionals & Academics2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books2375General2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books4856General485419th Century4853United States4808Americas9History1000Subjects283155Books4872General14278871State & Local4853United States4808Americas9History1000Subjects283155Books14279011Indiana14278871State & Local4853United States4808Americas9History1000Subjects283155Books11109Practical Politics11079Politics53Nonfiction1000Subjects283155Books394181011Hardcover394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155BooksR1OC51887X3KCYConspiracy and treason in early America!0382243692http://www.amazon.com/My-Lives-How-Lost-Them/dp/0382243692%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D03822436923513372Countee CullenNubia OwensHardcover97803822436910382243692EnglishEnglishEnglish795USD$7.95Silver Burdett Press1Book1993-09Silver Burdett PressYoung AdultSilver Burdett PressMy Lives and How I Lost Them11865USD$118.657899USD$78.990110005.02103822436925771999-12-11Timeless, touching tale for children and adults alikeMy grandmother gave me this book when I was very young; I'm thrilled that I'm finally able to find it again to pass down to my stepchildren. An amusing stor about an accident prone kitten who goes throug eight of his nine lives rather quickley. Be warned though touching, the end is rather sad.70194Cullen, Countee70024( C )70021Authors, A-Z17Literature & Fiction1000Subjects283155Books713782011General AAS28Teens1000Subjects283155Books394181011Hardcover394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books1250230011Young Adult673420011Age Range (age_range)388186011Refinements283155Books2ZL37KNEM0L0ONine Lives, or, The Cat Came Back0262522101http://www.amazon.com/Nature-Consciousness-Philosophical-Debates/dp/0262522101%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D0262522101485151http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51AYSN1ZCKL._SL75_.jpg7559http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51AYSN1ZCKL._SL160_.jpg160126http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51AYSN1ZCKL.jpg475375PaperbackNed BlockOwen J. It is quite simply the most complete anthology on the philosophy of consciousness out there. Papers from William James, to Dennett, Searle, Block, Naegel, and over 50 others. Qualia, explanatory gaps, zombies, inverted qualia, some scientific papers, one of the best intoductions to the field out there.....700+ pages of consciousness, consciousness, consciousness....this is essential reading, and having for anyopne interested in philosophy of mind, and scientists of mind too...the fastest way to familiarize with the vast literature on the subject. The table of contents is reason enough to buy this book, and I will not bore you with more.0262522101517182000-08-16Of course, this is a must for those studying cogsciIt's a thick book and has lots of stuffs in it. Nearly all of most important philosophical works on consciousness in recent years are brought together in this single volume. Naturally, this is a textbook for graduate-level courses in cognitive science or philosophy of mind. And makes a quite nice source book for those who want to further their studies in artifical intelligence.Intended for anyone attempting to find their way through the large and confusingly interwoven philosophical literature on consciousness, this reader brings together most of the principal texts in philosophy (and a small set of related key works in neuropsychology) on consciousness through 1997, and includes some forthcoming articles. Its extensive coverage strikes a balance between seminal works of the past few decades and the leading edge of philosophical research on consciousness.

As no other anthology currently does, The Nature of Consciousness provides a substantial introduction to the field, and imposes structure on a vast and complicated literature, with sections covering stream of consciousness, theoretical issues, consciousness and representation, the function of consciousness, subjectivity and the explanatory gap, the knowledge argument, qualia, and monitoring conceptions of consciousness. Of the 49 contributions, 18 are either new or have been adapted from a previous publication.Almost everyone agrees that we possess consciousness, but as this book demonstrates, that's where the agreement ends. What can we say about the mind without fear of contradiction? Not much, and that's how the study of consciousness stands out from other scientific and philosophical endeavors--the field's great minds argue cogently with little common ground, and nothing is safe from questioning.
For the adventurous and thoughtful reader, this is a paradise on the frontiers of knowledge. The Nature of Consciousness presumes a basic familiarity with science and philosophy, as well as a willingness to think and read carefully. With articles by such bright lights as Daniel Dennett, John Searle, Patricia Smith Churchland, and even the great William James, it provides both a comprehensive overview of the field and in-depth analyses of such issues as the mind-body problem and how we can study a phenomenon that may not be observed directly. It is best read as an update on Western scientific and philosophical replies to one of the great questions: Who are we? Given the universal appeal of such a question, the reader will undoubtedly find much within to challenge, puzzle, frustrate, and delight. --Rob Lightner0195117891The Conscious Mind: In Search of a Fundamental Theory (Philosophy of Mind Series)019514581XPhilosophy of Mind: Classical and Contemporary Readings0940322064The Mystery of Consciousness0316180661Consciousness Explained0813342694Philosophy of Mind (Dimensions of Philosophy)712993011General AAS468232Philosophy468206Humanities465600New & Used Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books684296011Cognitive Psychology491490Psychology468214Social Sciences465600New & Used Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books713013011General AAS491490Psychology468214Social Sciences465600New & Used Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books713011011General AAS468214Social Sciences465600New & Used Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books712982011General AAS465600New & Used Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books713014011General AAS319654011Qualifying Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books11184General4682Mental Health10Health, Mind & Body1000Subjects283155Books713271011General AAS4682Mental Health10Health, Mind & Body1000Subjects283155Books11175General11119Psychology & Counseling10Health, Mind & Body1000Subjects283155Books713279011General AAS11119Psychology & Counseling10Health, Mind & Body1000Subjects283155Books11023Consciousness & Thought11019Philosophy53Nonfiction1000Subjects283155Books11043General11019Philosophy53Nonfiction1000Subjects283155Books713486011General AAS11019Philosophy53Nonfiction1000Subjects283155Books227265Cognitive Psychology227264Behavioral Sciences173510Professional Science173507Professional & Technical1000Subjects283155Books573362Cognitive Science227264Behavioral Sciences173510Professional Science173507Professional & Technical1000Subjects283155Books573358Cognitive Psychology226685Behavioral Sciences75Science1000Subjects283155Books1099192General226685Behavioral Sciences75Science1000Subjects283155Books713677011General AAS226685Behavioral Sciences75Science1000Subjects283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155BooksR3HWSKO58NE62FList of Books on ConsciousnessRCGQVHY2HX0H1The Mysterious Flame36OPIML8QO09VPhilosophy Books for PNP students2IQT81BGEJ9XOConsciousness Part I1FHOUQEV2HGJKPhilosophy of Consciousness2CYMBV0QMR8PYThe Quest For Truth Part I3O4NI3GT9E0OXPhilosophy bks.- Philosophy of Mind116IS4PPWJ0YJRGF - Emotion, Will, & Consciousness21SZM8NX5XDCUEssential ConsciousnessYRDBBR5KGBBJThe Philosophy of Consciousness0720610850http://www.amazon.com/No-Ordinary-Man-Miguel-Cervantes/dp/0720610850%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D07206108502226326http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/5197QYRN75L._SL75_.jpg7550http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/5197QYRN75L._SL160_.jpg160107http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/5197QYRN75L.jpg475317Donald P. The best of Cervantes I've read. I'm only halfway through it now but I know two things for sure: every last scintilla of telling information about Cervantes is up-to-date and included, and, that Prof. McCrory has a superb ability to find those larger patterns in a life and give them emotional and psychological meaning. There are moments when you look up and marvel at the tons of documents that must've been sifted to produce the simplest facts. Just to give one example among many, I understand for the first time what living in Esquivias meant to Cervantes, what it must've been like for him, and especially interesting, what it meant to be married to him. Prof. McCrory gives us an uncanny sense of what Catalina`s life was like, her financial and social situation, the impact her mother had on the marriage - and all this in a few quick lines. One never bogs down in this book with all that background information about Philip II or the Armada or the state of banditry along this road or that, as is common in other bios of Cervantes. We always know just enough to place things in context and see the influences acting on poor Miguel. I get, for the first time, a sense of his thought processes, the decisions he had to make, his real options, what the world looked like to him. This is (as much as possible) an intellectual biography as well. Superb work.07206108505452003-12-28CERVANTES-THE GENIUS OF ALL WRITERS!I HAVE BEEN A CERVANTES SCHOLAR ALL OF MY LIFE AND HAVE READ ALMOST ALL THE BIOGRAPHIES OF THE WORLD'S GREATEST WRITER.THIS BOOK DOES JUSTICE TO HIS LIFE!THE DETAILS OF EVERY ASPECT OF CERVANTES'LIFE ARE ALL HERE.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ALL WHO LOVE DON QUIJOTE AND THE GREAT MIGUEL DE CERVANTES SAAVEDRA!!!!!!!
Hailed by Choice as "a fascinating story," this profile of Cervantes will captivate both scholarly and lay readers. EnlightenlingDisclaimer: I'm not a socialist and therefore have strong negative opinions regarding Mr Obama. That being said, I found this book to be very interesting. This book challenges the reader to do no less than what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr dreamed and look beyond the skin color of the candidate and evaluate their character. The author makes a strong argument that many of Mr Obama's expressed beliefs are incompatible with not only Black America but America at large.

My hat is off to the author, William Owens, Jr.16070207345332008-10-09InsightfulMr. Owens spoke at an event held locally. Although I did not have the opportunity to hear his presentation in its entirety, I understood the gist and was intrigued by the title of the book.

I read the book and found it very insightful. The book challenges readers to perform a side-by-side comparison of their Christian values and the values that Barack Obama espouses. Those values that Obama touts are in direct opposition to the strengthening of not only the African-American family but to the American family in general ranging from school choice to taxes to self-discipline. Mr. Owens implores the readers not to leave their values outside the voting booth.

Often, there is a comparison between Barack Obama and Dr. King. Before the lines are drawn, read Chapter 3: Dr. Martin Luther King & Barack Obama Side-by-Side. The chapter is very interesting and, again, forces readers to take an inventory of Dr. King's philosphies vs. Obama's.

Purchase this book not only for yourself, but as a gift. The book is not only applicable to African-Americans but every American regardless if s/he is voting for Obama, McCain, or still undecided. If the Black Community is a Community of God, why is it preparing to support the secular Democrats once again--and with so little internal debate? If the Black Community is proud of its great heritage, why is it rallying in support of a man who espouses so many issues of dubious morality? In Obama: Why Black America Should Have Doubts, William Owens cautions Black America to think about these and other important issues and to vote, not with the heart but with the head. This book is not so much anti-Obama as it is pro-Black and pro-American and pro-everything else that's good about this country.1596985666The Case Against Barack Obama: The Unlikely Rise and Unexamined Agenda of the Media's Favorite Candidate1416598065The Obama Nation: Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality1414330502Sarah: How a Hockey Mom Turned the Political Establishment Upside Down1935071025The Audacity of Deceit: Barack Obama's War on American Values0936783591Obama Unmasked: Did Slick Hollywood Handlers Create the Perfect Candidate?45Bargain Books2452Arts & Photography13819741Audiobooks2458Biography2459Business & Investing537584Calendars2460Children2475Computers & Internet2476Cooking, Food & Wine67702Film712385011General AAS882684Greeting Cards & Accessories2484Health, Mind & Body2487History2492Home & Garden2497Humor, Comics & Pop Culture2498Literature & Fiction2501Mysteries & Thrillers2505Nonfiction2512Parenting & Families2513Reference2514Religion & Spirituality2503Romance2515Science & Nature2504Science Fiction & Fantasy2516Sports16303581Teens2524Travel251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books12781Church & State12779Religious Studies22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books12504General22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books
