Father Owen Lee, famous to so many grateful listeners over the decades of Metropolitan Opera broadcasts for his pitch-perfect reflections on opera composers and their works, now does the same for orchestral music. In this handy, invitating volume, complete with illustrative CDs, he offers us a lifetime of rewarding listening. It might well have been titled "An Opera Lover's Guide to Orchestral Music"---Bravissimo!

Review Date: 2002-12-12
Handbook for Creative Church Musicians is a practical approach for choir directors and organists who want to create special music for worship. It neatly fills a very important niche, dealing clearly and concisely with such things as music fundamentals, harmonization, arranging, composing for voices, notation and publication(and much more).
I'm a long time fan of Hal Owen, having used his wonderful tutorials for the Finale Notation Program. I highly recommend this book!

As textbooks go, this is nothing like the standard American fare, with large margins, highlighted text in the margins, and lots of photographs. It is almost a scholarly journal and is totally text. Initially I dreaded reading this book, sure it would be dry, boring and/or above my head. I was TOTALLY wrong on all counts. I was happy to return to the book again and again, finding something interesting and insightful on every page. I have every intention of making this book a permanent part of my personal library!!! An exhaustive overview of the current thoughts in communication, this is a definate read for anyone interested in effective interpersonal communication.

Over 50 ideas - very stunning & creative

There is a typo for this book listing.Title is Handmade cards, over 50 original designs for all occasions. All kinds of papercrafts are explored. Very colorful photos, of projects and steps to make them. This covers stencilling pin-pricking, making windows. Many kinds of paper are painted, folded & glued to make all kinds of cards. Wire, beads, silk & wood, tho most cards are stunning not "weird". A very creative book (from England) to inspire you like it did me. It let me try new ways of making cards. It took time, but the cards were just like pictured when I was done. Then I could run with my imagination, & make variations on the technique I learned. I am very impressed by this lovely book. Concertina notecards, pop-ups- sun/moon, paper cutting, collage, paint resist and MORE - one project of each to learn new things.

Excerpt from book's Introduction:

"Who would dare to write about love! An excess of syrup and pap has already been penned on the subject. Some have prudently suggested that we establish a moratorium for at least a year on a word that has lost its finest meanings for us.

While love is our most prostituted concept, it remains our most potent reality. Love moy not make the world go around as the romantics contend (alas, greed is closer to doing that), but love does, as one sage muses, make the ride worthwhile.

The following essays aspire to evoke the range of dimensions that comprise love at its hardest: trust, guilt, forgiveness, compromise, weeping, anger, loneliness and the like. In exploring tough lessons of love one must prove serious without turning grim, blithesome without sounding farcical, tender without becoming maudlin.

Surely, love, at its fullest, delivers dificult yet welcome gifts!"

Film Fun With the Beatles!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-18
This delightful little book is a novelization form of the Beatles' first movie, 1964's "A Hard Day's Night." The book has 8 pages of photographs from the movie.

Beatle fans and experts will laugh while catching certain lines that were assigned to one Beatle (in the book), but delivered by another Beatle in the movie. At the time this book was written, the movie was still in progress and the script, while intact, was being tailored to the personality of each Beatle. Still, it is a fun book and a good part of any fan's collection.

This blunt, irreverent book blurts out what many people in business have long suspected: nearly everything you learned in business school is wrong and most of what you read in corporate mission statements and strategic plans makes no sense. Author Jo Owen takes on all of the shibboleths of yesteryear's management literature - romance your customer, communicate, invite change and so on - and demolishes each one. The approach is raw and blatant; it stands in relation to ordinary business books much as punk rock stands in relation to easy listening. The author seems to be saying something no one else has dared to say. But do not confuse the novelty of the presentation with the novelty of the material itself. To some extent, Owen's recommendations revise the conventional wisdom of the recent bubble years and replace it with a new and - if not more sober - certainly less effervescent orthodoxy. We recommend taking a thoughtful look. What people are starting to say more and more often, Jo Owen has perhaps expressed with the most originality.

Ed is a painter, a scenic artist for theaters. After some years he returns to his first job, The South Downs Theathre, where still works Jason, his first real love. But Jase is straight and Ed has never have the courage to admit his love with him. Someone else has chatted about it and Jason sometimes has mentioned something, but nothing has happened.

Now they are again together, and Ed's feelings are still strong. And Jase is more willing to experiment with him the sexual delight of gay love. But all their encounters are sharing in secret and no one knows they are lovers... maybe because no one has to know? Above all Jase's girlfriend?

I like Ed character. He is romantic and tender, he believes in love and he wants to see all the things good to achieve his desires. He is generous and open. Jase is more selfish. He doesn't understand his feelings and to obtain an answer he uses Ed, he takes advantage of Ed's feelings; luckily, he is in love with Ed, but he behaves coldly, he is not tender. Have you have an hint that I don't like very much Jace character?

The story is short. The plot is simple but enjoyable. The sex scene are natural and appropriate. In the end an interesting reading.
