The struggle to write

This, the second book in the Alberta trilogy, breaks with the past in more ways than one. While the first book concerned
itself with the struggles of an adolescent girl growing up in a cold and alienating small town in Northern Norway, the first
book examines Alberta's life seven years later. She is now a woman living on the fringe of the expatriate artist community
in Paris, and she struggles to maintain her autonomy, develop her voice as a writer, and stave off crushing loneliness and
poverty. Sandel is a master of Norwegian prose fiction, and although Alberta's situation is often desperate, the writing
is always exquisite.

This is the quiet, intense story of an adolescent girl who struggles to gain autonomy in an oppressive family and narrow-minded
town north of the arctic circle in Norway. The story (originally published in 1926) is set in the narrow confines of the
bourgeoisie at the end of the nineteenth century, and the desperation of the main character, Alberte, is palpable. Cora Sandel
(pseudonym for Sara Fabricius, 1880-1974) is considered to be one of the greatest Scandinavian novelists of the twentieth
century, but is virtually unknown abroad. Despite the seriousness of the novel, it manages to delight most readers because
of the brilliance of Sandel's prose. A must read for folks who love twentieth century women writers.

A fine volume (and series)for science teachers & enthusiasts

The final volume of the Album of Science maintains the high standards of the series. Not by itself an history of science,
the "Album" series nevertheless fills an important need in this subject.
These books contribute, through a masterful selection of photographs and drawings, a sense of life and adventure to the sometimes dry topic of science history. Science teachers and science buffs should have this resource on their shelves.
I endorse this volume and the Album of Science series in general. Too few people know these fine books exist. While The Album of Science is expensive, it is well worth it.

Never has anyone written such a scholarly and non-biased book about the Vietnam War. Dr. Robert Owens has done a ton of research
and has his facts and data all lined up to prove that "America Won the Vietnam War!"
His book goes into great detail about how the media and politicians created their own history and ignored some of the basic truths about the actual war on the battlefields of Vietnam. This book is amazing and should be part of every college and high school class that studies that period of our history.
All Vietnam veterans need to read this book so that they understand that they really did win the war; and that they were very effective in battles. As the author says on the back of his book:
To you, the unappreciated veterans of Vietnam, I say: "you may not have received a parade when you came home. The media may continue to malign your name. However, beginning here, it is my hope that you will see the record of your courageous achievements corrected and the history of your selfless service acknowledged. In my book I reveal the best kept secret of the twentieth century: `America Won the Vietnam War!'
Best history book on the Vietnam War! A MUST READ BOOK!

Baldwin's Flush Times is a great historical resource. Baldwin paints an interesting tale of frontier Alabama and Mississippi
and the characters which lived in the region. Overall, a great illustration of the American frontier and the Jacksonian era.

I can remember arguing in junior high school science classes against the theory that hair, per se, implies a higher level of evolution for its possessor than fur or feathers do, and that dreary naked skin is obviously the covering of the most advanced species.
"The students will please take note that it is not a giant sea other who wrote the textbooks or is teaching this class. Sit down, Beagle."
That was a dreary time, however much the packagers of freeze-dried nostalgia try to persuade me otherwise. I was there, and I remember.

A Fanicful Story of This and That! The illustrations are simply gorgeous in this hardcover book! It is a cute story, told
in rhyme, about Amy, who wants to bake pies, and how Ben helps her to gather the needed supplies. As they are working, they
hear a fifer and he announces that there is to be a fair. They rush off to the village to join in the fun. Along the way
you are introduced to the various trades and merchants who were common during Colonial times. Amy and Ben eventually meet
up with General George Washington in their trip about the village and he gives Ben his tri-corn hat. Each letter of the alphabet
is featured on the pages of this story and it is a great way to introduce the Colonists' culture to young readers while reviewing
the ABC's! Be sure to also catch "A Colonial Williamsburg ABC" if you like this one.

Having recently lost a loved one, I thought it would be hard to read about a husband whose dead wife keeps "visiting" him,
but she's so gentle and loving and apparently not heartbroken about dying that her visits are actually very comforting. Once
I started reading, I found it impossible to stop! This book drew me in immediately, took me outside myself and my grief, and
keeps me involved and interested.
The story of J.T., Kelly, Jeff and Nancy is so engrossing and the characters so real, the reader gets the feeling that they're just ordinary people they might meet in their own everyday life - people they see everyday but don't notice the pain, fear, and drama that's just beneath the surface. This book is well written, insightful, and compassionate, and when I came to the last few chapters, I was only sad that my great read was coming to an end.
I want to read anything else that Elizabeth Owen has written, and I'm certain that after reading "Angel of Trevi" so will others.
